Taking Submissions: The New Flesh: A Literary Tribute to David Cronenberg
Deadline: March 31st 2019 Payment: 1 cent a word and a print contributor copy David Cronenberg is one of the greatest cult-film directors of all time. Through his varied and highly influential career, he has managed to forge a path through cinema that includes films of horror, crime, psychological period pieces, and even a straightforward car-racing movie. His name is synonymous with Body-Horror, and for good reason. Our aim is to celebrate the man with an anthology of short stories influenced by his body of work. If you write weird fiction, horror, bizarro, crime, transgressive, or otherwise dark fiction and you love the films (and single novel!) of David Cronenberg, we would love to see a story from you. There’s a reason the term ‘Cronenbergian’ exists, we want stories that fit that vibe. - Submissions close March 31st 2019 - Submissions should be sent to: [email protected] - Please format the email subject as: Submission - The New Flesh - “Name of story” - Please attach as a .doc or .docx file. Do not include your submission as the body of the email. If you do this we will delete your submission without reading it. - Stories should be between 2,000-5,000 words with 3,000 being the sweet spot. - Please use a standard font at a 10/12 point and do not double-space after your periods. - We are seeking stories that are emotionally driven, narratives that are impactful, and stories that are well put together. We want characters with depth and life, characters with pathos. We also want goopy slime, visceral gore, surreal elements, and things that simply should not be. Some of the obvious elements we are looking for include: body-horror, shadowy organizations pulling the character’s strings, explorations of where the body and technology collide, philosophical and psychological subtexts, and...

Flash Contest: Migration
Deadline: April 10th, 2019 Prizes: The top three winners will receive cash prizes of $75, $50, and $25 respectively Every year, QSF holds a flash fiction contest to create an amazing new anthology of queer speculative fiction stories. We ask authors to do the nearly-impossible – to submit a sci fi, fantasy, paranormal or horror LGBTIQA story that has no more than 300 words. Our 2019 contest launches on March 1st, and closes it April 10th, but we do accept early entries. The theme for 2019 is “Migration”: 1) Seasonal movement of animals from one region to another. 2) Movement of people to a new area or country in order to find work or better living conditions. 3) Movement from one part of something to another. We live in an age of migrations – from one kind of society to another, from one country to another, from one platform to another. It’s a rich vein to mine, and we look forward to seeing your entries, whether they are dark signs of things to come, sophisticated comments on today’s society, or hopeful looks at the future of mankind. We’ll be accepting stories from across the queer spectrum, and would love to see more entries including lesbian, trans, bi, intersex and ace protagonists, as well as gay men. We also welcome diversity in ability and in race. We always get tons of gay sci fi shorts, so if you try something different, you have a better chance of standing out. Try for something unique – take the road less traveled. We’d also love to see more fantasy and horror stories, though we’re still happy to get sci fi and paranormal too. The stories can also fall anywhere across the spectrum romance-wise – romance is fine, but stories can also be genre driven...

Your story must be written in English, double-spaced in 12pt. Times New Roman font, and submitted by email as a .doc or .docx file attachment, or copied directly into the body of the email to [email protected]. That is, from a cat’s perspective, using its words or thoughts. The cat does not have to be a principal character, though the cat’s character should impact the plot in a significant manner. Achieving a variety of genre will be a component in selection. Note: Plots involving cat familiars and witches are low on our list of preferred stories for the second volume. To be considered, it must be freaking brilliant! Submit at your own risk. Most adult language is acceptable, but indiscriminate or extreme usage may affect selection. Multiple stories by the same author will be considered but each story must be submitted separately and will be treated contractually as a separate submission. Simultaneous submissions are okay, but please notify us immediately if your story has been picked up by another publisher. (This is a generous provision, and failure to advise us that your story is no longer available can jeopardize your future standing as a contributing author.) Taking Submissions: Hinnom Magazine Retro “Weird Tales” Edition: WOMEN ONLY
Deadline: April 15th, 2019 Payment: 6 cents per word PLEASE READ THE SUBMISSIONS GUIDELINES BELOW. THE HINNOM MAGAZINE RETRO “WEIRD TALES” EDITION WILL BE A PROFESSIONAL MARKET, PAYING 6 CENTS ($0.06) PER WORD FOR FICTION, AND WILL ONLY BE OPEN TO FEMALE AUTHORS. Greetings from Hinnom Valley, After the immense success of the Kickstarter, we’re kicking things into gear. We mentioned a “retro” edition of Hinnom Magazine that will be akin to the old Weird Tales magazines of the 1930s. When deciding the direction we wanted to pursue for this project, we really wanted to make a statement with this publication. Considering the old Weird Tales magazines were predominantly male writers, we thought it would be fascinating to see an issue of Hinnom Magazine, designed like Weird Tales, but featuring only female authors. We have a feeling this publication is going to be something special, and we are beyond thrilled to read thrilling stories from female authors of Weird Fiction and Cosmic Horror. An idea of what some of the format will look like: FICTION SUBMISSION DETAILS: We are looking for stories and poems that fit the themes of Weird Fiction and Cosmic Horror from ONLY FEMALE AUTHORS. Horror, Science Fiction, and Fantasy are all welcomed, as long as they fit in the realms of Weird and Cosmic. All stories and poems must also be speculative in some way. What we mean by this is that we don’t want stories or poems based in realism. While many great horror stories and poems are plausible in modern reality, these are not for Hinnom Magazine. Thus, all horror MUST BE otherworldly or supernatural in some way. Science Fiction MUST BE dark and speculative. Fantasy MUST BE morally ambiguous and grim. Any combination of the above genres is fine. In fact, we encourage it. If you wish to learn more of the stories we prefer, download a free issue of Hinnom Magazine by clicking the button below. RIGHTS SOUGHT FOR FICTION & POETRY:...
Taking Submissions: Translunar Travelers Lounge
Deadline: April 15th, 2019 Payment: $0.03 USD per word Submissions will be open from March 15 to April 15, 2019. Anything sent before or after will be fed, unread, to the small hamster that powers our life support system. Please do not give our hamster indigestion. WHAT TO SUBMIT Broadly defined, the type of fiction we are looking for is “fun”. Yes, that descriptor is highly subjective, and ultimately it comes down to the personal preferences of the editors. However, here are a few road signs to get you started on the path into our hearts. A fun story, at its core, is one that works on the premise that things aren’t all bad; that ultimately, good wins out. This doesn’t necessarily mean that your story has to be silly or lighthearted (though it certainly can be). Joy can be made all the more powerful when juxtaposed against tragedy. In the end, though, there should be hope, and we want stories that are truly fun for as many different kinds of people as possible. As we are a speculative fiction market, all stories must have a speculative element to them. We accept stories of no more than 5,000 words. Swashbuckling adventure, deadly intrigue, and gleeful romance are some of the most obvious examples of what we’re looking for, but we won’t say no to more subtle or complicated topics, as long as they fit under the wider “fun” umbrella. We HIGHLY ENCOURAGE submissions from authors of marginalized ethnicities, sexualities, genders, abilities and perspectives. If you are an author whose experience is not often represented, we absolutely want to hear from you. YES, YOU. What we’re enthusiastic about: Characters of all genders and sexualities or lack thereof Settings in non-Western cultures Friendship Happy marriages Stories that pass the Bechdel test and/or the Mako...

This Never Happened! Alternate History Farce and Fantasy
Deadline: April 30th, 2019 Payment: 2% of the net profits from the anthology History is full of "what if" possibilities. What if Rome had never fallen? What if the USA lost the Revolution? What if Hitler had never come to power? This is the stuff of "Alternate History" fiction. But, where's the fun in that? Thus comes our new anthology to provide that answer! This Never Happened is an anthology devoted to the humorous side of alternative history fiction. This collection will hold stories that are funny and outrageous, set in worlds where history differs from what happened in our own reality, with ridiculous consequences; tales that could not possibly have happened, or maybe they could have but they'd have just been absolutely hilarious! Explore what could have been, and what absolutely could not have been as well. Make us laugh, and screw up history like never before for this wacky story collection! If you wish to submit a story to this anthology, please adhere to the following guidelines: 1: Format: Stories should be formatted in either Times New Roman (preferred) or Courier New, and single-spaced. Please, do not add an extra space between paragraphs. A lot of writers separate their paragraphs into blocks these days, like they're writing a blog post. Please don't submit that way. Also, Files must be in an MS Word compatible format (.doc, .rtf, .docx). 2: PG-13, please. With this anthology, we're hoping to produce something Young Adults can enjoy, as well as older folks. No gratuitous sex scenes or horrifically offensive material. Some language is acceptable, but try to keep f-bombs to a minimum. 3: Word Length: 1,500-10,000 words. While we will entertain reprints, we give preference to fresh, previously-unpublished stories. 4: No Simultaneous Submissions. It is most disappointing to read the greatest story and accept it, only to...

Deadline: April 30th, 2019 Payment: Royalties A Murder of Crows—cozy to cozy-noir crime stories, set in any time, from dinosaurs to the present, using the collective names of groups of animals which includes mammals, reptiles, fish, birds, and insects. If your imagination goes beyond the scope of known collective names, you may create your own. Earth animals/birds only, none from outer space or invented animals. You can put your animals in jeopardy but animal cruelty or killing an animal is an automatic rejection. Choosing an animal/bird that is a little different may give you an edge on being chosen. We don’t want multiple stories using the same species! Your animals should be an integral part of the crime, not just a mention as part of the story. Examples of collective names to use: http://www.namibian.org/travel/misc/collective-nouns.html https://www.mnn.com/earth-matters/animals/blogs/99-strange-collective-animal-names https://grammar.yourdictionary.com/word-lists/list-of-names-for-groups-of-animals.html Submission Period: December 17th – April 30, 2019 [email protected] and the name of your story in the subject line. Standard manuscript form, sent as an attachment. Your contact information on Page One. Length: 2500 to 6000 words. Four to five thousand words is a good goal. We expect the anthology to have approximately seventy-five thousand words, a mix of longer and shorter stories. Payment: Royalty Fifty percent of the gross royalties per calendar quarter will be distributed equally among the contributors. Contributor copies will not be offered. A limited number of review copies will be available. We ask for the exclusive right to publish your story for one calendar year following contract signing, excluding publications of those previously published. Title subject to change. Taking Submissions: Hatchet Job
Deadline: April 30th, 2019. Payment: 2 cents a word for reprints, 4 cents a word for original work. This horror anthology, to be edited by Jerry L. Wheeler, seeks stories under 10,000 words that involve one of the traditional tropes of campfire tales and slasher films: the axe murderer. Stories need not focus solely on this antagonist, but all stories must somehow involve this threat or concept. Think Angela Carter’s “The Fall River Axe Murders.” Surprise us by breathing new life into this theme. That said, we anticipate most of the book will be reprints – for which we are offering 2 cents a word. Original work pays 4 cents a word but first query the editor with a synopsis. Specs? Please submit Word docs only, standard formatting, 12 pt Times Roman to me at [email protected], using the title of the anthology as the subject line. The deadline is April 30th, 2019. Taking Submissions: The Once and Future Moon
Deadline: April 30th, 2019 Payment: £10 and a contributor's copy A new fiction anthology to be edited by Allen Ashley and to be published by Eibonvale Press (UK) during 2019. Guidelines from Allen Ashley: This will be an anthology of stories set on / dealing with the abiding influence of the Moon. You can take a literal or non-literal approach. The “Once” aspect will deal with how older cultures / earlier civilisations / people in history saw the Moon, considered and reflected upon the Moon. Think Verne, Wells, Godwin. Think mythology. Think the Sumerians. Think the Ancient Greeks. Think beliefs held by vanished cultures. These stories do not have to be factually, scientifically accurate; the Moon element could be seen as poetic, figurative, imaginative, etc. These stories will likely form one-third of the book. Possibly half. For “Future”, I am looking at both the liveable near-future (e.g. up to 50 years’ time) and slightly further ahead as well. I want stories grounded in how we will live on / adapt to / use the Moon in the near and further future. What issues might we face – some of which have yet to be even thought of by NASA? I will also look at stories about how the Moon will affect our lives going forward. Will it be the site of the next war? Will it be the focal point of a conflict between science and religious forces (consider how the Moon is central to many religious practices)? What happens if the Moon starts to move closer to us or to move further away? What if the Moon was badly damaged or destroyed? What if the Moon acquired a companion? I am likely to take between half and two-thirds of the stories for this segment. These Guidelines are meant...

Taking Submissions: American Cult
Deadline: April 30th 2019 Payment: $5.00 Alternative American history, dark supernatural takes on national tragedies, the dark gods behind the politics and power. This anthology is the place to put the horror back into our homeland. There are lots of horrifying things going on in the country, however, for this collection, we are specifically seeking cult/supernatural horror. As these are works of fiction, we strongly recommend changing the names of living politicians in your work. Even if you make it painfully obvious who inspired it. We will not accept any stories about rape. Racism/Sexism/Bigotry of any form will never be accepted here. Stories between 1500-5000 words prefered. Double check your grammar and spelling. Format your story correctly. Please submit all stories in DOC/RTF format. We prefer stories that have not been published before. We prefer to avoid multiple and simultaneous submissions. Taking Submissions: Nox Pareidolia
Deadline: April 30th, 2019 Payment: 6 cents per word Open Period and Deadline Nox Pareidolia will open to previously unpublished submissions on April 1st and will close to submission at the close of that month. Payment Payment will be 6 cents per word. I prefer shorter pieces but I will accept exceptional tales that are longer, however the payment will be capped 6,000 words. Theme The theme is heavily inspired by Robert Aickman's fiction. Initially, I envisioned a book of stories where it is ambiguous as to whether the nature of the horror/weird element is supernatural or not. But I've recently decided to make that a more openly interpreted theme of ambiguous horror/weird fiction. Whether it be ambiguously supernatural or whether what exactly has or is happening is ambiguous, or any creative idea playing off of ambiguity could be interesting to see explored. But the element that is ambiguous must be intrinsic to the story. Formatting Standard Shunn formatting is just fine, but we're finding more and more that we prefer single spaced manuscripts as we read submissions on our devices. And italics should preferably be italicized and not underlined. Single spaces between sentences is also a huge help when final formatting comes around. That said, we will not reject stories if the formatting isn’t perfect. First and foremost make it readable. And where stories require odd formatting for effect, certainly don’t change that on our account. Via: Night Scape Press</a..
Taking Submissions: The Overcast Podcast
Deadline: April 30th, 2019 Payment: 1 cent per word, a flat rate of $20 if under 2,000 words. The Overcast is currently open to submissions three times a year, during the months of January, April, and October. (Note we are no longer reading during July. Our summers have just gotten too hectic. Sorry for the inconvenience. Thank you for understanding.) What We Want We are interested in speculative fiction, whatever that means to you, be it Science Fiction, Fantasy, Steampunk, Magical Realism, Slipstream, or an as-yet-unnamed genre. Anything that looks at the world and life from an unexpected angle. We want the original vision of William Gibson. The magic and beauty of Erin Morgenstern. The uncompromising voice of Margaret Atwood. The technical brilliance of Ted Chiang. We want to read stories that transport us to places that we've never imagined. We want to still be thinking about a story days after reading it. Be original. Be amazing. We are based in Portland, OR, and shine a spotlight on writers hailing from, living in, or connected in some way to the Pacific Northwest, as loosely defined by the bioregion of Cascadia. We feel there is an exceptionally strong talent pool of speculative writers in Cascadia, and we want to celebrate and promote them to a larger audience. Roughly half the stories we publish are by PNW writers. That said, we are not exclusive, and the other half of our stories come from authors all over the globe. So no matter where you live, send us your stories. If they make us laugh, cry, or turn cartwheels of astonishment, preferably all at once, we will find a place for them on The Overcast. This is an audio format publication. We feel that stories of around 20-30 minutes in length are the best...

Taking Submissions: The Shadow Booth Volumes 4 And 5
Deadline: April 30th, 2019 Payment: 1.5p per word You know how we like to keep you on your toes? Well... The Shadow Booth is now OPEN for fiction submissions until the end of April! Here are some basic guidelines: We are a bi-annual journal of weird and eerie fiction. Do not send us your Western romance (in space). Do not send us your drug addiction memoir. Do not send us your shopping list (unless you're buying some really weird things). Weird. Eerie. Fiction. Please. If you want an idea of what we mean by weird and eerie, then read one of our previous volumes. This is the best way to find out what we like! All ebooks are under £5, and like all independent publications, we need your support to keep going. Paperbacks are under £9, and our latest, Vol. 3, has just been published. (Paperbacks, ebooks and subscriptions are available here. Okay, rant over...) If you want further pointers, why not read editor Dan Coxon's article on the Ginger Nuts of Horror website: Face the Strange. Submissions should be 1,000 - 8,000 words long. We won't quibble over a word or two, but otherwise those limits are fixed. We would particularly like to read stories by BAME writers, and by women writing within the weird/eerie horror scene. In our experience, these tend to be underrepresented within the genre. Having said that, if you fall into neither of these groups, we want to read your work too - all stories will be considered on an equal basis once they have been submitted. Please only submit one story during the submissions period. Any further submissions during this period will be rejected. (We would say 'send us your best', but you know that already...) Simultaneous submissions are fine, but please let us know if your story is accepted elsewhere....

Also, we understand that writers may add our first line to a story they are currently working on or have already completed, and that's cool. Fletcher Harper What We Want: We are a quarterly zine interested in Extreme Horror, Splatterpunk, Bizarro, LGBTIQ+, Adult Content, freaky fantasy worlds and futures, ridiculous mash-ups, or anything just plain weird. Contest: Don’t Be A Hero: A VILLAINthology Featured Story
Deadline: May 1st, 2019 Payment: Contributor's Copy Note: I was iffy on posting this but I liked the theme so much I felt there could be a few others who did as well. The Fairfield Scribes are releasing Don't Be A Hero: A VILLAINthology, and we're looking for our feature story. DON'T BE A HERO. Heroes are boring. Standing up for weaklings, defending the status quo, reacting instead of acting. Villains are the go-getters, the ones who put grand plans into motion, the ones who change the world. For their own benefit, naturally. Villains are complex individuals with tales of their own to tell, and it's hard to have a great story without them. There's the dark figure cackling in the shadows, the grinning businessman behind the desk, the evil emperor sending forth his legions, the jerk down the hall who deliberately parks too close to the line every day . . . Sometimes, it just feels good to be bad. Submissions are open between March 1st and May 1st, 2019. Original stories only, please – no reprints will be accepted. Simultaneous submissions are fine, but please let us know immediately if your story is accepted for publication elsewhere. Word length can be between 2,000-10,000 words, which includes the possibility of a flash series of 2-4 pieces (as long as the total word count for all pieces together is between 2,000-4,000 words and the stories are all related in some way). The winning story will be featured in the collection, and the winner will receive both an electronic and hard copy of the anthology. The author will also be promoted on our website, and invited to participate in any reading events that will be scheduled (located in the Connecticut/New York area). The Fairfield Scribes asks for first publication rights of the winning story for print...
Taking Submissions: Tiny Nightmares
Deadline: May 1st, 2019 Payment: $100 Tiny Nightmares will be a collection of short and terrifying tales of monsters, madness, and nightmares. The anthology follows up on Tiny Crimes, an anthology of short crime fiction featuring stories by Carmen Maria Machado, Yuri Herrera, Brian Evenson, Amelia Gray, and more. For Tiny Nightmares, we’re seeking short stories that play with and expand the boundaries of horror fiction -- think of the stretch of unlit highway between Jordan Peele’s Get Out, Samanta Schweblin’s Fever Dream, and Stephen King’s IT. Stories that turn our understanding of “scary” on its (trembling) head. We’re looking for: Stories of new monsters, and old ones that scare us in new ways Tiny, intimate horrors to make our hair stand on end Horror as cultural/political/environmental funhouse mirror Subversions of traditional horror tropes Something so scary we haven’t thought of it yet Guidelines: Stories should be under 1200 words. Stories should be previously unpublished. Payment will be $100 dollars. Deadline: May 1st Via: Catapult's Submittable.

Taking Submissions:: Switchblade: Tech Noir
Deadline: May 5th, 2019 Payment: $15 Switchblade is an outlaw fiction print anthologyfeaturing authors writing in the hardboiled/noir genre, and nothing else. So think Richard Stark, Ross MacDonald, Jim Thompson, Don Winslow, Ken Bruen, James Ellroy, Lawrence Block, Iceberg Slim, Max Allan Collins, Christa Faust. (just to name a few) We don’t do cozies. We don’t do procedurals. We’re not a literary magazine, and we don’t do other genres. That said, we will consider noir/crime fiction ranging from the early twentieth century up to present day. Aside from that, we are a no limit hardboiled fiction journal—we publish the kind of stories no one else will consider. Back in the day there was a Nynex yellow pages ad campaign that went like this: if it’s out there, it’s in here—that’s how we feel. The world is filled with deviance, and good hardboiled fiction reflects that. We like strong characters, and good story telling, and we will not reject anyone based on mainstream morality. Amoral protagonists are encouraged. We will not however, publish masturbation fodder for masochistic pedophiles. We’re not interested in torture erotica. But if you’ve got a deplorable protagonist, and there’s a good story—we’ll print it. SUBMISSION GUIDELINES **Submissions for 2019** Our next reading period will be MARCH 10th to MAY 5th For the 2019 Cybrerpunk themed Special Issue ONLY Switchblade: Tech Noir Content. Rural noir is fine (very popular right now) but we love urban noir too. Urban being the setting.(not a reference to the racial demographic--any racial demographic is fine) We do mob stories. And not just Russian mob stories. Got a tight piece of fiction about the Sicilian mob in Jersey—we’ll look at it. Anyone who thinks the Italian Mafia (LCN) in America evaporated into thin air after the John Gotti trial, hasn’t spent any time in Philadelphia. That said—if it reads like a Sopranosscript or Goodfellas fan fiction, it’s going right...
