ALTERNATIVE BEDTIME STORIES FOR PROGRESSIVE PARENTS Edited by Diana Payton and Bob Brown We are looking for nursery rhymes, poetry, and stories that can be read and enjoyed by children of all ages. There is no lower word limit on poems or nursery rhymes. The work can be completely original or derived from fairy tales, bible stories, folklore, myths, or similar sources so long as acknowledgement is made. Absolutely no fan fiction of work that is not in the public domain. For stories we’re looking for 500 to 3,000 words. We anticipate publishing in fall of 2019.

ALTERNATIVE APOCALYPSES Edited by Debora Godfrey and Bob Brown Stories of endings, beginnings, and change. As always, a political bent doesn’t hurt but is not required. The apocalypse can be big or small, personal or world-shattering. Humor is always good. Satire is excellent. We will include some good poetry and thoughtful essays if you have them. For stories we’re looking for 500 to 5,000 words. We anticipate releasing at Worldcon in Dublin.

An editor will email you back as soon as possible with the decision about your story. This can take a few days, or, up to three months. We make every effort to get back to authors in a timely manner but we get a lot of submissions so sometimes it's not possible. A note on our editorial policy: before publication we may edit the story for length or readability. However, we always remain true to the spirit of the story. Issues are published at the end of February, May, August, and November. We reserve the right to shift publication date slightly, as necessary. We have reading periods for each issue, though we never close to submissions. February closes January 15 May closes April 15 August closes July 15 November closes October 15 Please do not submit the same story more than once, and please submit only one story at a time. We consider any story between 250 and 7000 words with speculative fiction elements. We prefer science fiction, fantasy, and the macabre, but we're willing to push the limits of traditional forms of these genres. We do not consider poetry, stories with over-the-top sex or violence, serials, novels, fan fiction, or non-fiction. We don't accept multiple submissions; in other words, only submit one story at a time and wait for a response before submitting another. We accept simultaneous submissions as long as you let us know up front and tell us as soon as it's accepted elsewhere. We do not publish reprints, including anything that has appeared on a website. TALES FROM THE SPACE FORCE Edited by Irene Radford and Bob Brown Okay, how could we not? Now that America has an official Space Force, we need to incorporate it into literature. What to do we want? Camp? Satire? Bug-eyed monsters? All good. We’ll do serious stories, too. Mostly, we want good stories. And if I am to confess, we want campy stories. We want the golden age of pulp to live again. Political bends are allowed. Poetry and essays are allowed. Ask yourself: what would an American Space Force do? Will there be a space wall around the International Space Station? Will NASA and the Space Force get along? I have no idea, but I’m leaving it up to you to tell us. Here at B Cubed, we leave the writing to you. We’re looking for 500 to 5,000 words.

Deadline: April 15th, 2019 Payment: $25.00 You must be eighteen or older. Stories must be the previously unpublished, original work of the submitting author. Your story must be written in English, double-spaced in 12pt. Times New Roman font, and submitted by email as a .doc or .docx file attachment, or copied directly into the body of the email to [email protected]. Your story must be complete, edited, and publication-ready, between 3,000 and 7,000 words. Your story must be written (fully or partially) from a cat’s point of view. That is, from a cat’s perspective, using its words or thoughts. The cat does not have to be a principal character, though the cat’s character should impact the plot in a significant manner. All genres and time periods will be considered, excluding erotica, but including mainstream literature, romance, science fiction, fantasy, mystery, steampunk (or any “punk” sub-genre), humor, paranormal, or horror. Achieving a variety of genre will be a component in selection. Note: Plots involving cat familiars and witches are low on our list of preferred stories for the second volume. To be considered, it must be freaking brilliant! Submit at your own risk. Most adult language is acceptable, but indiscriminate or extreme usage may affect selection. Multiple stories by the same author will be considered but each story must be submitted separately and will be treated contractually as a separate submission. Simultaneous submissions are okay, but please notify us immediately if your story has been picked up by another publisher. We mentioned a “retro” edition of Hinnom Magazine that will be akin to the old Weird Tales magazines of the 1930s. When deciding the direction we wanted to pursue for this project, we really wanted to make a statement with this publication. Considering the old Weird Tales magazines were predominantly male writers, we thought it would be fascinating to see an issue of Hinnom Magazine, designed like Weird Tales, but featuring only female authors. We have a feeling this publication is going to be something special, and we are beyond thrilled to read thrilling stories from female authors of Weird Fiction and Cosmic Horror. An idea of what some of the format will look like: FICTION SUBMISSION DETAILS: We are looking for stories and poems that fit the themes of Weird Fiction and Cosmic Horror from ONLY FEMALE AUTHORS. Horror, Science Fiction, and Fantasy are all welcomed, as long as they fit in the realms of Weird and Cosmic. All stories and poems must also be speculative in some way. What we mean by this is that we don’t want stories or poems based in realism. While many great horror stories and poems are plausible in modern reality, these are not for Hinnom Magazine. Thus, all horror MUST BE otherworldly or supernatural in some way. Science Fiction MUST BE dark and speculative. Fantasy MUST BE morally ambiguous and grim. WHAT TO SUBMIT Broadly defined, the type of fiction we are looking for is “fun”. Yes, that descriptor is highly subjective, and ultimately it comes down to the personal preferences of the editors. However, here are a few road signs to get you started on the path into our hearts. A fun story, at its core, is one that works on the premise that things aren’t all bad; that ultimately, good wins out. This doesn’t necessarily mean that your story has to be silly or lighthearted (though it certainly can be). Joy can be made all the more powerful when juxtaposed against tragedy. In the end, though, there should be hope, and we want stories that are truly fun for as many different kinds of people as possible. As we are a speculative fiction market, all stories must have a speculative element to them. We accept stories of no more than 5,000 words. Swashbuckling adventure, deadly intrigue, and gleeful romance are some of the most obvious examples of what we’re looking for, but we won’t say no to more subtle or complicated topics, as long as they fit under the wider “fun” umbrella.
