Taking Submissions: The Cafe Irreal Winter Window 2022
Deadline: January 1st, 2023 Payment: One cent U.S. per word ($2 minimum) Theme: Fantastic Fiction You really NEED to read the description below. The Cafe Irreal is a quarterly webzine that presents a kind of fantastic fiction infrequently published in English. This fiction, which we would describe as irreal, resembles the work of writers such as Franz Kafka, Kobo Abe, Clarice Lispector and Jorge Luis Borges. As a type of fiction it rejects the tendency to portray people and places realistically and the need for a full resolution to the story; instead, it shows us a reality constantly being undermined. Therefore, we're interested in stories by writers who write about what they don't know, take us places we couldn't possibly go, and don't try to make us care about the characters. We would also suggest you take a look at the current issue, archives, and theory (especially the essay, "What is irrealism?") pages on this web site. We accept unsolicited fiction up to 2,000 words in length. Translations are welcome. There is no minimum length. We accept only electronic submissions via e-mail at [email protected]. We cannot, due to the various computer viruses and worms, accept attachments anymore, so please paste your story into the body of the e-mail. Also include your name, address, e-mail address, and a short bio in the text of the submission; please put the word "submission" in the subject heading of the e-mail to ensure that your submission doesn't get lost among all the spam. We pay an honorarium of one cent U.S. per word ($2 minimum) to buy first-time internet rights (the story will then be archived). Payment is made upon publication. PLEASE NOTE THAT WE DON'T ACCEPT SIMULTANEOUS SUBMISSIONS and are only interested in reprints in unusual cases (e.g., the story has appeared in print but...

Taking Submissions: Samjoko Winter Issue II 2022
Deadline: January 1st, 2023 Payment: $20 Theme: No set aesthetic, enjoys stories that stands out for its honesty and desire to take risks for the sake of artistic expression. Winter Issue II submissions now OPEN Submissions Deadline: 2023/01/15 Payment for Accepted Pieces: $20 WE are non-genre specific. Please read the previous issues to get an idea of what we publish. If previously accepted, please wait 24 months before submitting again. Only submit once per reading cycle. Submission Guidelines Samjoko purchases first worldwide English-language serial and electronic rights from the date the contract is signed and paid for up until 4 months after publication date. Bear in mind that most publications will not publish pieces that have been published in print, eBook, or on the web, so for all intents and purposes after your work is published by us it can only be marketed as a reprint, which severely limits the number of markets that will accept it, and drastically reduces the pay rate it can receive. It is up to you, the author, to decide if publishing your work in print and/or eBook formats and/or on the web, giving up your First Publishing Right for a token payment, is really what you want to do. After initial publication date, Samjoko Magazine will maintain non-exclusive rights to publication. Paid submissions must not use the intellectual property of any other author or company. Just To Clarify: your work will not appear, and will not have appeared, in any other available format (blogs and public forums included) until 3 months after the release date of the story in Samjoko Magazine. After 3 months, we’ll retain ongoing non-exclusive distribution rights, but you can self-publish your work or sell your story to another paying market. Each piece we acquire will be published on samjokomagazine.com in an electronic seasonal...

We are now pleased to announce that submissions for flash fiction for our special next issue are open! That special issue? That’s our Amazing Stories: Sol System special edition. We are interested in stories set in the future and revolving around Sol, including planets, moons, asteroids, Oort and Kuiper, you name it! Can’t wait to see what you submit. Introduction So. We’re all fans here, so we probably don’t have to tell you that Amazing Stories was started in 1926 by Hugo Gernsback, giving it the distinction of being the first science fiction magazine in the world. You already know that Amazing Stories published many of the early greats in the field, including Jules Verne, H. G. Wells, E. E. “Doc” Smith, Ursula Le Guin, Isaac Asimov, John Campbell Jack Williamson, and Claire Winger Harris. But what has Amazing Stories done lately? The field of science fiction (or scientifiction as Gernsback originally called it) has changed substantially in the ninety years since Amazing Stories was first published. For one thing, science has progressed substantially, giving us men on the moon, a map of the human genome, virtual reality, the Internet of things, and real robots and artificial intelligence; never before have science fiction writers had so many toys to play with, and new ones seem to be appearing every day. For another thing, science fiction readers are more sophisticated than they were an almost century ago; they’ve been there and done that with the formulae...

Taking Submissions: Chaotic Merge Issue #5
Deadline: January 6th, 2023 Payment: $3-$5 Theme: Obscure and honest work from the new and rising artists around the world. An authentic portrayal of our world Chaotic Merge is a literary magazine that is home to obscure and honest work from the new and rising artists around the world. When choosing the name of this magazine, we wanted to find a name that included the diverse voice we search for and capture the beauty of an artist’s thought process. We thought these two went hand in hand. When an artist’s mind is clouded with so many thoughts, they might want to capture it. At first, it might seem messy, even chaotic, but when playing with structure and balance, it can become something beautiful. We believe this idea with the community too. If we put all our diverse and different stories together, we can create a knowledgeable and authentic portrayal of our world, creating a beautiful Chaotic Merge. General Submission Guidelines All work(s) should be submitted through Submittable with either Garamond or Times New Roman 12pt. Font. Please look below to see if the section(s) you are submitting to have specific guidelines. We have the right to refuse the right to read your work if submitted otherwise. Disclaimer: As a Magazine, we do not tolerate and reserve the right to reject or not to respond to work that contains racism, homophobia, violent themes, etc. content. Content Warnings: Please include content warnings for any sensitive material after the title of your piece or by messaging us directly. If you do not know if it should have a trigger warning or not, put it in there anyway. It can only help. Note: All our zine are all online only. Taking Submissions: The Fantastic Other Winter 2023 Issue
Deadline: January 7th, 2023 Payment: $5 Theme: fantasy, sci-fi, paranormal, surrealist, fabulist, and magical realist Theme: We are excited to announce that the theme for our winter issue is going to be mirrors. Fiction has always been a means to hold a mirror to ourselves, our environment, and the society in which we inhabit. In the realms of fantasy and science fiction, the mirror has the capacity to grow darker and more twisted. What will you see when you gaze into these reflections? Please feel free to interpret this theme however you see appropriate for yourself and your work. All of our guidelines for general submissions still apply (see below). We are looking for short fiction, flash fiction, poetry, and art submissions. All contributors published for this issue will be awarded 5 USD via PayPal. It is a small token payment, but we hope to be able to expand this in the future. The last day to submit for our Winter 2023 Issue will be January 7th, 2023. Taking Submissions: Wyngraf January 2023 Window
Submission Window: January 1st-7th, 2023 Payment: 1 cent per word Theme: Cozy Fantasy Stories Wyngraf buys First Global Serial Rights to short stories of cozy fantasy from 3,000 to 8,000 words long. We currently pay $0.01 (one cent) per word. We know that’s not much, and we hope to increase our rate as soon as possible. Wyngraf Is Fantasy Often fantasy means the presence of magic, but not always—for example, Ellen Kushner’s Swordspoint. Low-magic and no-magic stories are welcome at Wyngraf. Stories should have a pre-modern technology level. Wyngraf isn’t interested in science fiction or urban fantasy. (Well, we are, but not for this magazine.) Our cutoff is roundabout the early 19th century. Think Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell. This is probably flexible. We want secondary worlds. Wyngraf doesn’t publish stories set on our Earth, either now or in the past (historical fantasy). We want our readers to be transported to the worlds of your imagination! We prefer high fantasy to fairy tales. This isn’t a hard rule, but we’d rather see creatures from high fantasy (elves, dwarves, halflings, etc.) than folk tales (werewolves, vampires, leprechauns, etc.). Things we’ve never seen before are even better. Human-only settings are welcome. Wyngraf Is Cozy We define cozy as a sense of comfort, hominess, welcoming, and friendship. Community. Relationships. You know: cozy. Setting is an essential part of coziness. We love all sorts of fantastical settings: bustling city, decrepit castle, sailing ship, welcoming inn, busy caravanserai, witch’s cottage, wizard’s tower, farming village, school for bards, adventurer’s guild hall… The setting should be somewhere the reader would like to be transported. Think of your first time discovering the Shire, or dreaming of your own Hogwarts acceptance letter. We invite you to spend a few extra words realizing your setting. We want readers to feel they could live in the world of your story. Characters...

Diet Milk Magazine is a biannual literary magazine devoted to Gothic prose, poetry, and art. Neatly genred or genre-bending, classically styled or modern, we want your prettiest, most pungent dread. Give us withering romance, creatures that lurk and lure, families to be feared and houses that haunt; give us isolation and creeping, oppressive unwellness. Quietly thrill, terrify, and leave us wanting more. For all our important links, including website, twitter, and support, check out our campsite.bio page! This hub will direct you to anywhere you want to go, as well as put you in contact with our official email. All submissions are processed through Duosuma, available to anyone with a free Duotrope account. Our manager can be accessed through the button above after logging into or creating your account. A note on Duosuma for trans people: this platform requires that you supply a ‘legal name’ when submitting. There is no way for us to disable this, but as a trans-led magazine, we understand that this may be uncomfortable. We suggest using a ‘dummy name’ (ex: Dummy Name) for that field when first submitting, and only worry about telling us a ‘legal name‘ in the event of an acceptance. That is the only time, for payment reasons, that we will need it. We don’t accept multiple submissions or reprints from other magazines, but are willing to consider pieces posted to author websites/blogs. Simultaneous submissions are allowed, but we ask to be informed of acceptance elsewhere immediately so that we may remove you from the queue— and offer congratulations! In addition to your work, you will be asked to submit a brief cover letter. While...

We publish creative work that is fantastic or surreal, and which crosses the boundaries between science-fiction, horror and literary fiction. It is one of the longest-running independent literary magazines in the UK. It is supported entirely by its readers: no adverts, no sponsors, no public funding – just a community of people who all enjoy the same kind of weird literature. Neon publishes dozens of writers and artists each year – all from unsolicited submissions. If you’ve got something which might fit the magazine, please read the guidelines below to find out how to get it published. Before sending work for publication… The best possible thing you can do to increase your chances of being accepted is to read the magazine! This is easy to do: the print edition costs less than a sandwich and a coffee (and ships to anywhere in the world) and you can set your own price for the instant-download digital edition. Download Now Not only will reading the magazine give you the clearest possible idea of Neon‘s aesthetic, but by subscribing, purchasing a copy or donating you’ll be supporting one of the UK’s longest-running independent literary magazines. On top of that, anyone who supports the magazine in any of these ways will receive expedited responses to submissions, complete with editorial feedback. If that’s something you’d value, please consider supporting the magazine before making your submission. What we’re looking for We prefer darker pieces, especially those with an element of the surreal or speculative, but are open to anything and like to be surprised. Images, comics, and graphic poems are also welcome, as are self-contained extracts. If you have any doubts about whether something is suitable, go ahead and...
Taking Submissions: Quantum-Steampunk Short-Story Contest
Deadline: January 15th, 2023 Prizes: $4500 in gift cards up for grabs, the grand prize lands $1500 worth. Theme: Steampunk story that takes place at least partially in the 1800s and have at least one piece of quantum technology The year I started studying calculus, I took the helm of my high school’s literary magazine. Throughout the next two years, the editorial board flooded campus with poetry—and poetry contests. We papered the halls with flyers, built displays in the library, celebrated National Poetry Month, and jerked students awake at morning assembly (hitherto known as the quiet kid you’d consult if you didn’t understand the homework, I turned out to have a sense of humor and a stage presence suited to quoting from that venerated poet Dr. Seuss.1 Who’d’ve thought?). A record number of contest entries resulted. That limb of my life atrophied in college. My college—a stereotypical liberal-arts affair complete with red bricks—boasted a literary magazine. But it also boasted English and comparative-literature majors. They didn’t need me, I reasoned. The sun ought to set on my days of engineering creative-writing contests. I’m delighted to be eating my words, in announcing the Quantum-Steampunk Short-Story Contest. The Maryland Quantum-Thermodynamics Hub is running the contest this academic year. I’ve argued that quantum thermodynamics—my field of research—resembles the literary and artistic genre of steampunk. Steampunk stories combine Victorian settings and sensibilities with futuristic technologies, such as dirigibles and automata. Quantum technologies are cutting-edge and futuristic, whereas thermodynamics—the study of energy—developed during the 1800s. Inspired by the first steam engines, thermodynamics needs retooling for quantum settings. That retooling is quantum thermodynamics—or, if you’re feeling whimsical (as every physicist should), quantum steampunk. The contest opens this October and closes on January 15, 2023. Everyone aged 13 or over may enter a story, written in English, of up to 3,000 words....
Taking Submissions: The Crawling Moon: Queer Tales of Inescapable Dread
Deadline: January 15th, 2023 Payment: $0.08 a word for original stories Theme: Queer stories featuring gothic horror, perversion and depravity. The Crawling Moon: Queer Tales of Inescapable Dread will be an anthology of gothic depravity, horror and perversion. It will likely straddle genre lines, stalking the line between fantasy and science fiction. We will be open to queer horrors both psychological and supernatural, gory and cerebral. But more than anything, we're asking contributors to scandalize us. General submission notes: Unless the editors are otherwise specified, you can address cover letters to “Dear editors” or “Dear dave.” Please avoid “Dear Mr. Ring.” If you joke about how straight white men are underrepresented in speculative fiction, it will not win you any points. Please query [email protected] if you aren’t sure if your submission went through. We’re happy to check. Thanks for thinking of Neon Hemlock for your work! Please don’t self-reject. Neon Hemlock Press is open to submissions of short stories for The Crawling Moon: Queer Tales of Inescapable Dread. We are looking for: Wordcount: Under 6,000 words. 1-4,000 words is probably the sweet spot. Concept: Horror stories exploring gothic elements, depravity and perversion. What we want to see: We are looking for dark stories that subvert the gothic and explore the filthier edges of horror. We would like to be scandalized. We’re using the most inclusive definition of queer. Queer, trans, ace, undefinable. Throughout, we’re looking for rich, varied and nuanced understandings of gender, family and ethnicity. What...

Taking Submissions: The Devil Take You
Deadline: April 15th, 2023 Payment: $125 - $200 Theme: Original weird tales set in the medieval period that explore the human (and inhuman) experience through the lens of horror. Sentinel Creatives has opened up for submissions for our “THE DEVIL TAKE YOU: TALES OF MEDIEVAL HORROR” anthology. Deadline for Submissions: 15 April 2023 Wordcount: 3,000 - 6,000 Remuneration: $125 - $200 Simultaneous Submissions: Yes WHAT WE’RE LOOKING FOR We’re looking for original weird tales set in the medieval period that explore the human (and inhuman) experience through the lens of horror. Some clarifications: Weird: The term “weird” should be understood to mean a certain sense of breathless and unexplainable dread, of outer, unknown forces present, a suggestion of the defeat or suspension of the laws of nature which have hitherto served to protect our minds and bodies (and souls) from the assault of chaos. By its very nature, weird fiction should invoke in the reader a sense of profound uneasiness and dread, it should hint at the inability of the human mind to comprehend the true nature of existence, and it should cause us to question the stability of our faith in the established laws of nature. Medieval: The term “medieval” denotes the period in Europe lasting from around 500AD to 1500AD and is typically divided into the Early, High, and Late Middle Ages. There is a temptation here that often proves too powerful to ignore, to view Europe through a monist lens: to see all of Europe as Christian, white, and “Western”. But this is a strange way to view a continent and a period that saw so much strife and upheaval precisely because of the differences of those living within its borders. These are the differences—the tensions—that create the opportunity for compelling storytelling. Tell us stories set in the Iberian Peninsula, where the Muslim Moors and Spanish Ibero sit uneasily beside one...

Taking Submissions: Real Stories of the US Space Force
Deadline: January 22nd, 2023 Payment: New stories pay pro rate, $0.08 per word, to 10,000 words. Verse pays $50. Theme: Science fiction short stories and fact articles illustrating current and future near-Earth space-related threats The US Space Force has a PR problem. Several, in fact. It was not Donald Trump’s idea. It did not steal its iconography from Star Trek. It is not just a lunatic scheme to expand the military-industrial complex by sending battleships into space. Yet judging from social media, many think all these things and more. Space has become critical not only to the military but to the economy and all aspects of daily life, and as we stand at the dawn of a new age of space commerce, that’s only going to intensify. Several nations have already developed capabilities to deny, degrade, and disrupt access to and utilization of space–based assets, whether to degrade US military capability or as a direct economic attack. Like it or not, the militarization of space started long ago, threats are already up there, and wherever people and their interests go next, so too will go conflict, intrigue, heroes and villains, everything that comprises good stories. WHAT WE ARE UP TO Real Stories of the US Space Force will be a collection of science fiction short stories and fact articles illustrating current and future near-Earth space-related threats and dispelling misconceptions about America’s newest service branch. It will be published by Baen Books in 2023 WHAT WE WANT Stories that grab us from the start and stay with us for days. Scientifically plausible drama about people facing interesting challenges related to the US Space Force or more generally, the policing and defense of near-Earth space and related issues, now or in the foreseeable future (the next century or so). Stories don’t have to take place in space, involve the actual US Space Force, or...

It is in continuing with this spirit of pioneering individuality that we are thrilled to announce the launch of our new novella line. “We believe novellas can be as compelling and satisfying as novels and want to create books for readers who want to be immersed in a book but don’t have a lot of time,” said Jennifer Barnes, managing editor and co-owner of RDSP. “RJ Joseph has agreed to be the editor for our novella line and brings an array of talent, expertise, and experience to the job. We know she will not only help us uncover beautiful stories but work well with authors in the pursuit of polishing their pieces.” We will be seeking dark speculative fiction works between 20,000 and 38,000 words that are presented in unique voices – stories told through the lenses only these creators have access to, distinctive tales, borne exclusively from the creator’s particular expertise. No niche is too niche, and we look forward to experiencing your literary worlds. We will open to submissions from January 9-23 and you will be able to find all the details on this page. “I’m excited to be working with RDSP on our new novella line: Selected Papers from the Consortium for the Study of Anomalous Phenomena,” Joseph said. “Acquiring fresh stories and working with writers to boldly introduce them to readers will allow me to help develop new and seasoned voices in speculative fiction. My previous editorial experience and current academic work have well prepared me for this role; and RDSP, a well-established innovator in the publishing arena, is the perfect...

Taking Submissions: Old Moon Quarterly January 2023 Window
Submission Window: January 1st-30th, 2023 Payment: 0.08 USD per word Theme: character-focused, weird sword-and-sorcery: stories of a dark and transgressive nature What We Want Old Moon publishes character-focused, weird sword-and-sorcery: stories of a dark and transgressive nature, set in a secondary or historical-paranormal (“our” reality, but with a twist, if you will) world, with a focus on rounded characters undergoing some sort of conflict, resolved (though not always successfully!) by the might of their main or mind. We love stories that combine that sense of action and adventure with well-rounded characters who make us question our own realities and perceptions. We love to see the gothic, the baroque, the eldritch, and we love to see it hit with an axe. Weird fiction and sword-and-sorcery can both be slippery terms. That is part of the fun! But, for our purposes we know it may help prospective writers if we list a series of authors and their stories we feel encompass (at least in part) what we love about the borderland of sword/sorcery and weird fiction: Laird Barron ("Oblivion Mode," "Ode to Jode the Toad") E.R. Eddison (The Worm Ouroboros) John R. Fultz ("Chivaine") Robert E. Howard ("The Shadow Kingdom," "Worms of the Earth") Caitlin R. Kiernan ("The Sea Troll's Daughter") John Langan ("The Savage Angela in: The Beast in the Tunnels") Tanith Lee (Birthgrave, "Southern Lights") C.L. Moore ("The Black God's Kiss") Silvia Moreno-Garcia (The Return of the Sorcereress) Michael Shea (Nifft the Lean) Clark Ashton Smith ("The Charnel God," "Necromancy in Naat") E. Catherine Tobler ("The Living, Vengeant Stars, "And After the Fire, A Still Small Voice") Gene Wolfe ("Bloodsport") The list could go on and on, of course, but we feel those provide a representative sample of the work we enjoy. We do not ask for pastiches of their work,...

Taking Submissions: Anna Karenina Isn’t Dead
Deadline: January 31st, 2023 Payment: 5 cents per word for original fiction, 4 cents per word for reprints Theme: The rewritten lives of female literary legends Note: Reprints Welcome The rewritten lives of literary legends You suffer. You die. You exist so the hero can have his journey. Who are you? You're a woman in classic literature. Of course this isn't the destiny of every woman, but from Anna Karenina to Jocasta to Cio-Cio-San, from Esmeralda to Aida to Mrs Rochester, death, madness, or suffering is the fate of far too many women in classic stories. Anna Karenina Isn't Dead undoes that. In this anthology of literary women, these women live. Do they have a happily ever after? Maybe. Do they have a happy-right-now? Oh yes. Feel free to bring your woman to the present, future, to anywhere or anywhen. How your classic heroine finds her peace is up to you. Tell us a reimagined tale of the famous, the infamous, the barely mentioned woman in an old story, poem, or legend. Give her a better journey than the one she got. This call is open to writers of any gender and in any location; we accept simultaneous and multiple submissions (up to 3 stories per writer); payment is five cents American per word (four cents for reprints) up to 5,000 words – your story can be longer, but payment stops at 5K words. The deadline is 31 January 2023. Please send your manuscript as a .docx attachment, Times New Roman, 12-point – with your name and story title on the first page. In your email be sure to tell us who your character is, and from what story she comes. No characters still under copyright please. Submissions or questions to Atlin Merrick (she/her): [email protected]. Via: Improbable Press.
