Taking Submissions: Chromophobia (Early Listing)
Taking Submissions: Chromophobia (Early Listing)
Submission Window: August 1 – August 31, 2021 Payment: $0.01/word Theme: Stories that use color in creative, unconventional ways This upcoming anthology will be edited by Bram Stoker Award-winner Sara Tantlinger and released by Strangehouse Books in the fall of 2022. From the editor: “The use of color in literature is something that has been studied, analyzed, and written about for decades. Think of classics like ‘The Yellow Wallpaper’ by Charlotte Perkins Gilman and ‘The Masque of the Red Death’ by Edgar Allan Poe. Descriptions of color can entirely change a story’s atmosphere and tone; the imagery can lull us into safety or sickness. I’m looking for stories that use color in creative, unconventional ways. Terrify me with pastels. Use watercolors to invoke dread. Take a classic trope and redye it into something unique. I also welcome stories of chromophobia, stories with characters who have never seen color or who are color blind, or who deal with visual disabilities. You do not have to use the color in your title — I don’t want a hundred stories titled ‘Red’ in my inbox 🙂 Feel free to run wild with these guidelines; the interpretation of the theme is yours, just make sure it’s horror/speculative fiction.” All writers who identify as women are welcome to submit. One submission per author. Payment: $0.01/word. NO multiple submissions NO simultaneous submissions NO reprints. Submission Length: 1500-6000 words. Expected word count for CHROMOPHOBIA: ~90K The submission window will be open from August 1 – August 31, 2021. Submissions sent outside of this time frame will be deleted. Responses should take no longer than 3 months. Due to the anticipated volume of submissions, there will not be individualized feedback on declined stories. Send submissions to: [email protected] with name and story title in the subject line. Don’t stress about the cover letter! Just get those stories attached and...

Taking Submissions: Nafallen University – College Catalog
Deadline: August 31st, 2021 Payment: .01p/w for each course accepted Theme: A course catalog for a strange and horrible university in North Texas, (think Miskatonic of the south). Welcome to Nafallen University, located outside beautiful and destitute Crisp Texas, we offer an advanced education in butchery, beating CSI forensics, the blackest of rituals, swamp husbandry, torture, non-Euclidian mathematics, law, religious studies, sacrificial rites, and of course, business. Located near a Highway and a small Texas town, Nafallen is the perfect place to find an abundance of test subjects and sacrifices to aid in students’ academic studies. The isolated nature of North Texas also allows for those studies to remain undiscovered by those that would stand in the way of progress. This is a call for a new anthology chapbook from John Baltisberger and Matthew Henshaw. The conceit is that the chapbook is a course catalog for a strange and horrible university in North Texas, (think Miskatonic of the south). Submissions should follow the example below, with a department heading followed by course descriptions. Each description can be anywhere from 1-200 words long. They may be written to be funny, bizarre, or horrifying. We will take as many courses from submissions as we feel are a good fit. Contributors will be listed as Faculty, AGRICULTURE AGR 161: Fungal Studies I Prerequisites: None (AGR 161 recommended prior or concurrent) A 12 week course of study of Fungi on this planet, a history of cultivation and uses throughout time both past and future. AGR 181: Chlorophyllosophy Prerequisite: Permission from the instructor pending written application In this course, students will investigate the nature of chlorophyll-its origins and its adversarial relationship with the fungal kingdom. Taking Submissions: The Mercy Seat: Stories From Death Row
Taking Submissions: The Mercy Seat: Stories From Death Row
Deadline: September 1st, 2021 Payment: 5 cents per word Theme: Empathetic short stories that fall into the crime fiction genre told from the perspective of people on death row. No government should have the right to murder another human being. I don’t think that is a crazy statement to make, yet here we are, a mere fifteen days into 2021, and already the United States has executed two of its citizens: Lisa Marie Montgomery (52) and Cory Johnson (52). It should not matter whether or not they were guilty of their crimes. Capital punishment solves nothing. It never has, and it never will. Please check out the following information, from the National Coalition to Abolish the Death Penalty (NCADP): Death sentencing and executions in the United States have steadily been declining in recent years. Despite these trends, death sentences continue to be imposed in a handful of states while the flaws and failures of this system are more apparent than ever. Racial Bias: Racial discrimination pervades the U.S. criminal justice system, resulting in disproportionate death sentences for people of color, especially African Americans. Read More Innocence: There are numerous cases of individuals who have been executed despite serious doubts about their guilt. Read More Cost: By eliminating the death penalty, states would have millions of dollars a year to invest in programs that are proven to prevent violent crime, create safer communities and support those who are harmed by crime and violence. Read More Victims: Any policy debate or criminal case dealing with capital punishment begins with the agonizing fact that someone in a family and in a community has been killed. A murder causes immeasurable suffering by victims’ families. Read More Harm to Prison Workers: The system of imposing the death penalty for crime has unintended — and largely unspoken — consequences for those who work in corrections. Read More ...
Taking Submissions: Contrary Autumn 2021 Issue
Taking Submissions: Contrary Autumn 2021 Issue
Deadline: September 1st, 2021 Payment: $20 Theme: We ask our fiction writers to imagine their readers navigating a story with one finger poised over a mouse button. Can your story stay that finger to the end? “Turning words into art is unnatural. It begins with a contrary attitude. It says, I am unhappy with the way things are and desire to make things different. Rather than represent the world, I will make something wildly and savagely new. I will defy logic. I will invest in new perceptions. I will combine and recombine and fabricate and juggle until something that I have never experienced is experienced. The process is alchemical. The process is violent. It goes to the heart of creativity. It disrupts and shatters. It is splendid with provocation. It is an aggression against banality. It is sharp and loud like a janitor scraping frost from a window. The hectic bounce of steam on a street after a truck roars by. The anarchy of waters, the comedy of the face, dangerous feelings vented from a cage of skin.” ~ John Olson Poetry — We believe poetry is contrary by nature, always defying, always tonguing the tang of novelty. We look especially for plurality of meaning, for dual reverberation of beauty and concern. Contrary’s poetry in particular often mimics the effects of fiction or commentary. We find ourselves enamored of prose poems because they are naturally contrary toward form – they tug on the forces of exposition or narrative – but prose poems remain the minority of all the poetic forms we publish. Please consider that Contrary receives vast amounts of poetry and that we can publish only a small percentage of that work. Please submit no more than three poems per issue. Our poetry editor is Shaindel Beers. Fiction — We ask our fiction writers to imagine...

Taking Submissions: And the walls Came Crashing Down
Taking Submissions: And the walls Came Crashing Down
Deadline: September 1st, 2021 Payment: $15 Theme: Stories taking place at the Rangeley Park which all of the details are below. There's hardly a mansion in New England that's been spared the aesthetic travesty wrought by the march of time. Ivy carpets stone; paint peels and shingles crack. And weeds force asunder the masonry. No longer home to families who command pocketbooks big enough for their upkeep or who can afford to house and employ a cadre of servants, the stately old homes of centuries past, the pride of the towns in which they sat, a beacon of wealth and power, today stand abandoned and in ruins. Or, worse still, have been crudely apportioned into apartments, populated by drunken students with no regard for the lifetime of attention and energy countless maids, who must surely now lie spinning in their graves, dedicated to keeping their rooms spic-and-span. In other cases, it is not educated men who hold the world in their fingertips who tread the squeaky floorboards of stately parlors, once symposiums that rivaled Socrates' himself, but dentists, who encourage their patients to spit in the open, utterly in contrast with the rules of social decorum. Perhaps more lucky are the homes that don't have to live with the indignity of such decay, but which burned down long ago. Now nothing more than stone-walled skeletons of their former selves, they ensnare the imagination and seem to command a much more romantic aura than their subdivided architectural brethren. Their charred remains engender, not pity, but compassion for tragedy. One cannot help but try to complete the picture of the house that once stood, or imagine the people who must have inhabited it. Were they, those lucky few who lived with such luxury, content? Or did they crack under the pressure and...

Taking Submissions: Vautrin Magazine 2021
Taking Submissions: Vautrin Magazine 2021
Deadline: September 1st, 2021 Payment: $130.00 and two contributor’s copies for fiction over 2,000 words., $65.00 and two contributor’s copies for fiction under 2,000 words., $50.00 and two contributor’s copies for literary essays. Theme: Gritty urban fiction, Crime/Mystery Fiction, Ghosts. The Supernatural, and Literary Essays We are open to submissions until September 1, 2021. Gritty urban fiction. Jim Gavin’s Middle Men, Mary Miller’s Always Happy Hour, or Becky Mandelbaum’s Bad Kansas are good examples of what we mean by this. If you’ve written a compelling short story, though, no need to worry too much about “gritty” or “urban.” You may submit the story. Crime/Mystery Fiction. Genre fiction is a fit at Vautrin. But if you’ve written a good short story with crime fiction elements that doesn’t necessarily seem like genre fiction, it could still be a fit. Ghosts. The Supernatural. Balzac wrote The Wild Ass’s Skin, after all. If old Honore tried it, so can we. And Oscar Wilde’s The Picture of Dorian Gray is one of our favorites. A crime fiction story with supernatural elements might hit the mark. Or any mix of the above. Literary Essays. We’re interested in essays that talk about contemporary crime fiction, or essays that walk the path between, say, 19th century fiction and fiction in the here and now. We like symbolic inquiry. If you’ve written something interesting and would like to publish it in Vautrin, you may submit it. If you’d like an inside track on the type of fiction we tend to publish, the most recent issue of the magazine is available here: Fiction should be no longer than 6,000 words. Essays should be no longer than 5,000 words. No flash fiction. No reprints. Limit one short story or essay submission per writer. $130.00 and two contributor’s copies for fiction over 2,000 words. $65.00 and two contributor’s copies for fiction...

War Monkey Publications, LLC, is pleased to announce open submissions for our upcoming anthology: FROM THE YONDER Volume III A horror, short-story collection of regional legends and tall-tales from around the World. Our Staff so loved working on the first volume, we've decided to keep doing it. We are seeking short story submissions (1000-7500 words) for this anthology. The stories must be based upon a regional/cultural legend or tall-tale from any location or culture in the World. “Regional” can be a specific place (Loch Ness) or a larger region (Bigfoot in the Pacific Northwest). We are seeking stories in the horror genre. Inclusion of elements of other genres is welcome, so long as, overall, the story is an horror story. The subject of the story can be based on any legend, so long as it has a horrific flavor. Ghosts, hauntings, alien abductions, monsters, demons, spirits, witches, etc, all are acceptable, as long as the subject is based on an actual legend or tall-tale. We want an original story involving the legend. Don’t rehash the legend itself or write an essay on the tall-tale. Instead, for example, WOW us with a new fable of some poor unfortunate who finds out that legends are sometimes all too real. For more examples; read FROM THE YONDER; Volume I (published in February 2020) Please DO NOT: ~Extrapolate relationships that do not exist in the actual legends. Nessie can be a horrific monster, but she is not a servant of the Elder Gods (no matter how much we love Eldritch horror). ~Attribute characteristics or powers that do not exist in the actual...

Taking Submissions: Sherlock Holmes: Adventures through the Multiverse
Deadline: September 30th, 2021 Payment: $100 OR $50 plus a percentage of the Kickstarter project profits (whichever amount is GREATER) and a contributor's copy Theme: Traditional Sherlock Holmes stories, but with a twist, in that every story will feature an adventure from a different universe. Sherlock Holmes: Adventures through the Multiverse We’ve read about the many cases that Holmes and Watson have handled from 221B Baker Street over their long career together, but what cases were handled from the other 221B Baker Street, or the other, other one? Adventures through the Multiverse will answer those questions. They will be traditional Sherlock Holmes stories, but with a twist, in that every story will feature an adventure from a different universe. Possibly Watson may be the detective and Holmes is his chronicler. Perhaps Lestrade is the detective and Holmes works at Scotland yard. Maybe young Holmes is one of the Baker Street Irregulars. Maybe Mycroft is the detective and Sherlock works for the government. Perhaps Holmes and Watson reside in the American Old West, or in Ancient Rome, or in Feudal Japan, or even in a futuristic moon base. The choice is up to you!!! Guidelines: These should be traditional Sherlock Holmes adventures that fit into the timeline of the original canon. It will be ok to use a slight sci-fi twist in that, in your multiverse, in the year 1881 smartphones existed as their industrial age happened centuries earlier than ours. If you decide to go this or a similar route, they should not be the focus of the story or detract from a traditional feel. Please start your story with a designation of which multiverse this story takes place in (You can give your multiverse a name i.e. "Animal Multiverse" where every humanoid is an animal like in Zootopia, or...

Taking Submissions: The Cafe Irreal Fall 2021
Taking Submissions: The Cafe Irreal Fall 2021
Deadline: October 1st, 2021 Payment: One cent U.S. per word ($2 minimum) Theme: Fantastic Fiction You really NEED to read the description below. The Cafe Irreal is a quarterly webzine that presents a kind of fantastic fiction infrequently published in English. This fiction, which we would describe as irreal, resembles the work of writers such as Franz Kafka, Kobo Abe, Clarice Lispector and Jorge Luis Borges. As a type of fiction it rejects the tendency to portray people and places realistically and the need for a full resolution to the story; instead, it shows us a reality constantly being undermined. Therefore, we're interested in stories by writers who write about what they don't know, take us places we couldn't possibly go, and don't try to make us care about the characters. We would also suggest you take a look at the current issue, archives, and theory (especially the essay, "What is irrealism?") pages on this web site. We accept unsolicited fiction up to 2,000 words in length. Translations are welcome. There is no minimum length. We accept only electronic submissions via e-mail at [email protected]. We cannot, due to the various computer viruses and worms, accept attachments anymore, so please paste your story into the body of the e-mail. Also include your name, address, e-mail address, and a short bio in the text of the submission; please put the word "submission" in the subject heading of the e-mail to ensure that your submission doesn't get lost among all the spam. We pay an honorarium of one cent U.S. per word ($2 minimum) to buy first-time internet rights (the story will then be archived). Payment is made upon publication. PLEASE NOTE THAT WE DON'T ACCEPT SIMULTANEOUS SUBMISSIONS and are only interested in reprints in unusual cases (e.g., the story has appeared in print but...
