WiHM 2023: Wicked Women
Wicked Women
by: Amy Grech
Never underestimate the power of strong women hellbent on righting wrongs. Fierce female protagonists who rely on their cunning frequently take center stage in my work. I enjoy delving deep into the female psyche, so they can execute swift vengeance on the male counterparts who wronged them.
My crime novella Alphabet City is my most brutal work to date. It’s set in NYC’s gritty Alphabet City, where a young, aspiring author, Ruby Fuji meets Dr. Trevor Braeburn, a devious eye doctor looking for a thrill. She invites him up to her apartment, a potent cocktail of overwhelming lust, coupled with lax inhibitions leads to poor judgment on Ruby’s part, with deadly consequences for the young girl. A few weeks later, Ruby’s older sister Gia seduces Trevor and their father, Mr. Fuji seeks redemption after Gia lures the doctor back to their apartment. It’s extremely visceral, with lots of unexpected twists and turns…
Similarly, my sci-fi/horror hybrid, “EV 2000” (published in Tales from the Canyons of the Damned: No. 38), deals with advanced technology gone wrong, with June Roberts exacting the ultimate revenge. Her husband, Harold, talks about work incessantly. He’s a scientist who’s out of touch with humanity—intent on taking credit, earning accolades for the next big scientific discovery. In the process, June is a hapless participant.
Their marriage is strained—Harold is married to his work—June has become merely an afterthought. He guilts her into donating—June has AB- blood, a highly-coveted, rare blood type. Hours pass before he can be bothered to check on her. When she accuses him of loving his precious machines more than he loves, her, he begrudgingly drives to the hospital.
After extracting June’s blood along with her DNA, the EV 2000 can experience June’s emotions. Sensing her high anxiety level, it taps into her subconscious and opts to recreate their honeymoon, when Harold still desired June…The EV 2000 devours June’s resentment of Harold’s clinical, one-track mind and unleashes it all during a murderous rampage.
A word to the wise: Always do unto women as you would have them do unto you, or suffer the consequences…
