Taking Submissions: The Alchemy Press Book Of Horrors
Deadline: January 31st, 2018 Payment: 0.5p a word (£20 for 4,000 words, £30 for 6,000 words), a contributor's copy, and royalties 2018 sees the re-launch of the Alchemy Press Book Of… anthologies with a brand new title: HORRORS, edited by Peter Coleborn and Jan Edwards. We are looking for horror stories … but tales that can be described as “weird”, “strange”, “amazing” and “peculiar”: stories that would have found a home in Weird Tales, Unknown Worlds, Fantastic and Fantasy Tales among other illustrious publications. Your story can be set in almost any era, any place but glimpse at and pervert the usual perceptions of reality – and unreality. We do not want stories that deal with common horror tropes without stretching boundaries. Avoid zombies unless they are tackled in an unexpected and strange fashion. No urban romance – you know, heroine falling for a vampire and so forth. Nor do we want to see religious tracts, adult content, and we really, really do not want gross-out horror tales. Please send your stories in a standard manuscript format (3,000-6,000 words ) to [email protected] to arrive by 31 January 2018 (contact us if an extension is required). Payment: 0.5p a word (£20 for 4,000 words, £30 for 6,000 words), plus a copy of the book and royalties. The anthology will be in print for a maximum of five years and then the book will become OOP. If you are interested put on your story-thinking hat now. Any questions please get back to us at the above email address or use this contact form. NOTES: We accept stories from anywhere in the world (the galaxy, even) if written in English We only accept email submissions We are looking for new stories although reprints may be considered Please present your manuscript as a Word document (or RTF or similar) using standard formatting (double spacing,...

Taking Submissions: Sanctuary
Deadline: February 28th, 2018 Payment: fifty percent of the royalties divided equally. Darkhouse Books seeks poetry, flash, short fiction, and creative nonfiction reflecting the theme of sanctuary, refuge, shelter, or asylum, from the perspective of those offering, seeking, denying, or destroying it. From Bangladesh to the city animal shelter, all are welcome, as are all genres. TIPS: If you are familiar with the Darkhouse Books anthology Descansos you will have some idea what the editors are looking for. This series leans toward the literary while welcoming all genres, so long as the author has paid close attention to craft. Send us work that stands out because of its excellence, of course, but also because of its creative take on the theme and on the craft of writing. Take a risk and do it with skill! When it comes to prose, the editors tend to prefer short and tight, but if you write long and you can prove us wrong, you’re in. We will accept reprints so long as the piece was published more than a year before you submit it, and you are submitting in accordance with the previous publisher’s guidelines, along with ours. SUBMISSION Requirements: Please include whether your submission is poetry or prose in the subject line of your email, and include a cover page that lists the title, your name, and your contact information, as well as the name and date of any previous publication, if it is a reprint. DO NOT INCLUDE YOUR NAME OR CONTACT INFORMATION in the body of YOUR PIECE. IF YOU DO, IT WILL NOT BE READ. Format your piece in 12-point Times New Roman or Courier, double spaced, with initial indents of .5”, and 1” margins. Send your manuscript as .doc or .docx. Please submit no more than five poems and/or two prose...
Taking Submissions: Shhhh… Murder!
Deadline: February 28th, 2018 Payment: Contributors will share equally fifty percent of the royalties received. Scheduled for release in late spring of next year and timed for summer reading, this anthology will feature cozy to cozy-noir stories featuring libraries and librarians. Extra points will be shamelessly awarded to writers with personal ties to libraries. The submission period for this anthology runs from November 1st to February 28th, upon the last stroke of midnight, Pacific Standard Time. We are looking for stories from 2500 to 5000 words, but will consider stories outside that range, at our discretion. Contributors will share equally fifty percent of the royalties received. We expect between fifteen and twenty stories to be accepted and are aiming at a volume length of around eighty-five thousand words, and around two-hundred and thirty pages—all dependent, obviously, upon the length of the material chosen. We will accept work previously published, provided it was not published after May of 2017, and that you hold the rights. Simultaneous submissions are fine, with the usual proviso that we should be notified should the work be accepted elsewhere, so that we may withdraw it from consideration. Submissions and questions may be sent to [email protected]. Here are some manuscript formatting tips. Via: Dark House Books.

Taking Submissions: Triangulation: Music
Deadline: February 28th, 2018 Payment: 2 cents a word and a contributor's copy Triangulation will be accepting submissions as of December first 2017. This year’s theme: “Music”. We are Parsec Ink’s speculative fiction annual, now in our 14th year. We’re looking for outstanding fantasy, science fiction, and horror–from new and established writers. Take the theme and run with it. Tell us a story we won’t forget. Theme: “Music” We’re looking for fantasy, science fiction, weird fiction, and speculative horror stories where music, a musical instrument, the parts of music, or musical culture make an appearance in a meaningful way. As a thematic element, you can apply a light touch or go full tuba. Be aware that we may, in this case, retool the title a bit, depending on the exact quality and character of the submissions we receive. But if you’ve got a better title than “Triangulation: The Musical”, let us know in your cover letter. Submissions Open: December 1, 2017 Submissions Close: February 28, 2018 Word Count: We consider fiction up to 5,000 words, but the sweet spot is 3,000. There is no minimum word count. Genre: We accept science fiction, fantasy, and horror–and enjoy intelligent blends of the three. Stories without a speculative element will not be considered. Compensation: Pay is semi-pro: 2 cents a word. Authors will receive an e-book and one print copy of the anthology, plus wholesale pricing for additional print copies (typically 50% off the cover price). Rights: We purchase North American serial rights, and electronic rights for the downloadable version(s). All subsidiary rights released upon publication. Submissions: We are a meritocracy. New authors are as welcome as those with a laundry list of accomplishments. But it’s going to be the story that wins us over. Grab us by the lapels, drag us onto that plane, take us for the ride of our lives… but...
Taking Submissions ‘Re-Launch’ and ‘Re-Quest’
Missile rocket flying high in dark sky Deadline: February 28th, 2018 Payment: $10 Note: Reprints Only Pole to Pole Publishing is seeking short, re-print fiction for two anthologies to be published in 2018 as the forerunners in our Re-Imagined Stories series: Re-Launch and Re-Quest. Re-Launch requires dark science fiction reprints on the theme of “launch” or “re-launch.” Re-Questrequires dark fantasy reprints on the theme of “quests.” For both anthologies, stories should be 3,000-5,000 words and meet the central theme of the anthology. Reprints currently available on line are not eligible. Preference is for stories that haven’t been published in at least a year. Older reprints will carry more weight than new ones. Author must possess the rights to offer the story for submission. Hard Sells: Profane and vulgar language — because we market to both adult and YA readers. If we are interested in your story, we may ask you to edit profane and vulgar language as a condition of publication. First Person and Present Tense. We’ve published both: when the stories were very, very good. We want to let you know up front that we’re going to reject this most of the time. It’s just not our preference. Excessive Gore and/or violence. Blood and guts are fine—as long as they’re part of the story and not the story itself. Sex. See above about marketing to a wider audience. Right Purchased: – The non-exclusive right to publish the story to the new Pole to Pole Publishing Patreon blog (for patron’s eyes only). – The non-exclusive right to collect the stories into an anthology, published in 2018. Payment: Payment is $10 per story, paid on acceptance (contract must be signed), via PayPal only; plus, one electronic and one print copy of the antho your story appears in. Sorry: If you do not have a PayPal account, please...
Taking Submissions: Beneath the Waves – Tales from the Deep
Deadline: February 28th, 2018 Payment: $50 (AUD) and a contributor's copy It's time to put the grey matter to use and start planning for the next anthology. With a working title of "Beneath the Waves - Tales from the Deep," this will be our fourth anthology in the Things in the Well series, and will be published in 2018 (Deadline is end of February. Eta is April.) Email: [email protected] when your story is complete, and as good as it can be! Note By all means draw inspiration from them, but I'm not looking for Lovecraft/Mythos fiction, or rehashes of Greek mythology, etc. unless these are outstanding, different, and memorable! I want something new and exciting! New psychological terrors, new fears, new creatures and new stories of the supernatural. If you need more ideas, take a look at Brian Lumley's work, or H.G. Wells, or Cornish myths, Japanese legends, etc. Archetypes Clive Barker's story from the Books of Blood "The Madonna" will be one of our archetypes, so if you don't know that story, please familiarise yourself with it... I'd also urge you to look at some of Brian Lumley's work, e.g. Haggopian for some fresh ideas. But don't forget I've read all these stories, so no pastiches or cheap imitations, please :) Stop! Before putting fingers on keyboards (or pen to paper) you would do well to read my Editor’s blog at http://thingsinthewell.webs.com/editor-s-blog or buy and read some of our previous themed anthologies on Amazon. (You may have to look for them in your stores, or ask for them!) Word Count, etc. Word count is expected to be 5,000 - 8,000 and I am flexible to a degree, on the basis that if the story fits you should wear it. Having said that, although it's a flat-rate payment, I don't think a writer should limit themselves based on the payment rate. I anticipate a...
Taking Submissions: Nefariam: The Element of Crime
Deadline: February 28th, 2018 Payment: $25 and a contributor's copy The basics Payment is $25 + 1 contributor copy, additional copies at discount. Genre is crime. But there's more to it. Word count is 2000-5000 words. Simultaneous submissions are welcome. Reprints and multiple submissions are not. Submissions close end of day February 28, 2018. Diverse is good. Submit it. Pay rate Well, we aren't the majors, so we offer a flat pay rate of $25 and one contributor copy of the published anthology. Payment will be sent within 30 days of publication. You will also be able to purchase additional copies at a discounted rate. Genre This time around, it's crime. Now having said that, we want to put our twist on it. First off, if you don't write crime, that's great -- it goes toward our tagline of "Try something different." So, we are actually encouraging non-crime writers to give it a shot. Need some guidance? Check out the articles here and here. Now, for those of you that actually do write crime, we're still going to ask you to try something different as well. Break the conventions. Shake up the tropes. Want some examples? Well, hey, have you tried layering a different genre on top of it? Science fiction? Horror? Western? Mystery? War? Historical? Diverse stories and characters are always something that we look for. Don't limit yourself. Don't play it safe. Surprise us. Surprise yourself. Word count The sweet spot is between 2000 and 5000 words. Got something that's outside that range? Fair enough. We'll still take a look at it, but bear in mind, if you're going to bend the rules, you have to ensure it's a mind-blowing read. Reprint/Multiple/Simultaneous submissions Let's take these one at a time, shall we? Reprints: No. We want to ensure that we can market the anthology as all-new...

Taking Submissions: The Twisted Book Of Shadows
Deadline: February 28th, 2018 Payment: 6 cents per word advance up to $300 and royalties. Edited by Christopher Golden and James A. Moore What inspired us to create The Twisted Book of Shadows, and what can readers (and writers) expect from this anthology? Anthologies were a vital, formative part of our development as writers — and as readers. We look back with love and wonder at the efforts of the legendary Charles L. Grant to bring the cream of the horror crop into readers’ hands. His eleven-volume SHADOWS series contained familiar names, but every installment also presented us with the unfamiliar, and often the brand-new. Other Grant anthologies — TERRORS, NIGHTMARES, MIDNIGHT, the quartet of GREYSTONE BAY books — provided the same. Charlie Grant helped move unknown writers into the horror community’s conversation. There were other anthologies that contributed to the trend. Thomas F. Monteleone’s BORDERLANDS series. Kathryn Ptacek’s WOMEN OF DARKNESS. Stuart David Schiff’s WHISPERS series. Kirby McCauley’s legendary DARK FORCES. Skipp & Spector’s milestone BOOK OF THE DEAD. David J. Schow’s SILVER SCREAM. And on and on… But those books were published during horror literature’s glory days. In the years since, it has grown more and more difficult to persuade publishers to invest in horror anthologies (or anthologies of any sort, really). If Golden wants to pitch an anthology to a mainstream publisher, it’s necessary to compile a list of contributors first. Which means that there’s little opportunity to bring in unknown writers. Yet those memories remain. We have talked for years about the desire to present an anthology that is open to anyone, and which allows us to follow some personal rules (outlined below). Yes, it’s a massive time commitment, but we—and John McIlveen of Haverhill House—believe it is absolutely worth it. We want to create a market for horror stories...

Things that squish, splat, burst and ooze. Trapped in your body, trapped in your mind. Reality slips away. You're nothing more than an animal. Prey. Meat. Deadline: March 1st, 2018 Payment: ½ cent per word for original works, $10 for reprints, and a contributor's copy Note: Reprints Allowed Edited by Howard Rachen Deadline: March 1st, 2018 The curse is as old as folklore itself. They are the malediction of gods and witches, protections of the pharoh's tombs, the warnings for would-be thieves. Before the days of Hollywood, the werewolf was the victim of a curse. Today they linger with sports teams and in the theatre. Armoured Fox Press is looking for all manner of horror stories related to curses. Bloodlines with a black mark, tainted objects, locations under a hex, and anything else cleverly twisted into a curse. Be creative, don't just send us yet another unlucky penny, but something new that makes us hesitate to step on a crack or ignore that warning. We will NOT accept: Racism, sexism, or discrimination presented in a positive light. Pedophilia or sex with characters under the age of 18. Rape, torture, dubious consent, forced seduction. If you are in doubt, ASK. Better to ask then to get a straight up rejection! And remember, this is a non-erotic anthology, so please, no sex on screen. Taking Submissions: If This Goes On
Deadline: March 1st, 2018. Payment: $0.08 per word and royalties A LETTER FROM THE EDITOR This project is born of rage and sorrow and hope. Rage at the way America has been stolen and how those thieves have been eating away at its infrastructure. Sorrow at the lives being destroyed in the sorrow as well as for the earth as its protections are stripped away by a kleptocratic and corrupt regime. Sorrow for the way words themselves have been distorted and twisted away from truth. And hope. Because humans continue to progress and evolve, even though that climb is a rocky one and we slide back sometimes. We seem to have done so recently. And so this anthology, an attempt to rally, to inspire, and to awaken. Some stories will despair, but others will have the light we seek, lamps to light the path and show the pitfalls as we continue upwards. This anthology is part of my resistance. I hope it will be part of yours as well. – Cat Rambo 20 September 2017 FROM THE PUBLISHER The idea for IF THIS GOES ON came as a reaction to the isolationism, divisiveness, anti-science rhetoric, and fear-mongering that we saw all-too-frequently from our national leaders after the 2016 election. I was finally called to action by the hateful rally in Charlottesville, VA this summer. This project is very personal to me. A mezuzah is nailed to the doorframe of my house, here in Virginia, and I proudly top my Christmas tree with a Star of David every year. When I watched Vice’s powerful documentary on the white supremacist rally in Charlottesville, as I watched a mob in broad daylight chanting anti-Semitic messages in my relative back yard, I could no longer ignore the fear I felt for the future of my country...

THEME ISBN-10: Coming Soon ISBN-13: Coming Soon Hex Gunslinger is an upcoming anthology of speculative, mysterious, and romantic weird western tall tales! Framed as an unearthed secret library years after the civil war, each story should hold the ethos of western expansion beginning in 1803 with the Louisiana Purchase, and ending around the 1850s not necessarily restricted to a North American audience. Do not take manifest destiny as a mantra to live by. Shape a world with all the magic and mystery of the frontier without letting the ugliness of conquest be consumed with fantastic whimsy. We want wide open plains where violence ruled, underground movements brewing with tension, and the Wild Wild West in all it’s beauty and madness. Bring us your stories marking the age of the gold rush, injustice, genocide, mass immigration, transcontinental railroads, vigilante justice, telegraphs, outlaws, gunslingers, slick talkers, setting suns, and the impending civil war that would rip a nation apart. Taking Submissions: Untitled Horror Short Story Anthology
Deadline: March 1st, 2018 Payment: $50 and a contributor's copy Calling all authors—we've got a new collection of short horror in the works, and we want you! See below for details. Deadline: March 1, 2018 Length: 5,000 to 8,000 words Payment: $50 plus contributor's copy Submission Criteria We are interested in short horror fiction about people who sneak into abandoned, forgotten, shunned, or cursed communities and survive to tell the tale. For example: Centralia, Pennsylvania—the mining town abandoned because of an uncontrollable underground coal fire; Love Canal—the New York neighborhood declared off-limits due to extreme environmental pollution; and Pripyat—the Ukrainian city evacuated after the Chernobyl disaster. The emphasis is on communities—a haunted house or other such localized place is not large enough to qualify. The place in your story must not ever have existed in the real world (i.e., no stories about the vanished Roanoke Colony), but must be described as a place that could plausibly exist. For instance: Stephen King's fictional town of Derry. Your story must be set in the present, told in first person after the fact, from the point of view of someone who visited that place and returned to tell the tale. Supernatural elements are permitted, but not required. Your story's title must be the name of the place that is the subject of your story and the larger region in which it is located; for instance, "Derry, Maine." The horror of your story should lie in the characters discovering the long-lost reasons why that community was abandoned in the first place. Via: Dark Water Syndicate.
Taking Submissions: Sword & Sonnet
Deadline: March 1st, 2018 Payment: 6 cents per word Stories featuring a woman or non-binary battle poet as a main character. Word Count: Up to 5000 words Payment: US 6c per word Originals only. No reprints. No multiple submissions. No simultaneous submissions. Standard Manuscript Format. Doc, Docx or RTF. The Sword & Sonnet Kickstarter successfully funded and a wonderful group of writers — Alex Acks, C. S. E. Cooney, Malon Edwards, Spencer Ellsworth, Samantha Henderson, S. L. Huang, Cassandra Khaw, Margo Lanagan, Khaalidah Muhammad-Ali, Tony Pi, A. Merc Rustad and A. C. Wise — have agreed to write for us. We’ll be holding an open submission period in February 2018 and actively encourage writers from all backgrounds to send us their stories. What kind of stories are you looking for? Stories featuring a woman or non-binary battle poet as a main character. Although we envision the bulk of the stories will be fantasy, we’re also open to science fiction or horror. We’re looking for lyrical Shimmery stories, epic fantasy tales, and gritty poetpunk. Stories could feature secondary, historical or contemporary settings. Although they don’t feature battle poets (and we’re not looking for carbon copies) here are some stories which give some examples of some of the flavors we’re looking for: Feed Me the Bones of Our Saints by Alex Dally MacFarlane The Half Dark Promise by Malon Edwards Piety, Prayer, Peacekeeper, Apocalypse by Rati Mehrotra What do you mean by battle poet? A poet who fights. We’re flexible on the definition. Does my story have to have lines of actual poetry in it? No. We’re looking for stories, not poems. Can I submit a poem? No. Your story can have some lines of poetry in it, but it doesn’t have to. We want stories, not poems. Are you accepting reprints? No. Original stories...

Taking Submissions: War on Christmas
Deadline: March 4th, 2018 Payment: 8 cents per word CA, 1 cent per word for reprints Note: Reprints allowed If it isn’t perfectly clear by now, we are looking for Ho ho, oh hell, is it that time of year again? Already? When the muzak starts cranking out lousy Casio versions of “It’s Beginning to Look a Lot Like Christmas” non-stop? When the flavour du jour switches from pumpkin spice to eggnog every goddamn thing? When everything gets all twinkly and glittery and your eyes just want to roll out of your skull from the sparkle overload? Worse: how about when every other person you come across wants to infect « Back to War on Christmas We’re looking for deranged and demented stories and poems that snap back against all that holiday schmaltz. Our leanings are toward the dark, the speculative (SF, fantasy, horror), the flat-out weird, the humourous, but that covers a lot of ground. But basically, if it would piss off Sean Hannity or Bill O’Reilly or that stuffy old grandma that always gave you hideous socks for Christmas, we’re in. One cautionary note: it’s likely there will be a lot of Santa stories submitted. We’d urge you think more widely, especially outside the white, Judeo-Christian canon. There’s really plenty to hate about Christmas, so it shouldn’t be that hard. Some guiding stars, if you like: The Ice Harvest Robert Devereaux’s Santa novels Arthur C. Clarke’s “The Star” (not the wussed-out version they did on the Twilight Zone, neither!) Donald E. Westlake’s “Nackles” Neil Gaiman’s “Nicholas Was . . .” Joe Hill’s NO54A2 Damon Runyon’s “Dancing Dan’s Christmas” Don Bassingthwaite’s Cocktails at Seven, Apocalypse at Eight SUBMISSION GUIDELINES Submission window: Monday, January 15, 2018 to Sunday, March 4, 2018, at 11:59 PM Eastern Time. Taking Submissions: Untitled Anthology On Dreams, Nightmares, Visions, And Hallucinations
Deadline: March 15th, 2018 Payment: $5-20, depending on length and a contributor's copy An untitled anthology on DREAMS, NIGHTMARES, VISIONS, and HALLUCINATIONS. DEADLINE: 15 MARCH 2018 Everything is not as it seems. The world appears normal, but something is off. Is the hallway stretching? The windows and doors too wide? Are colors this vibrant, this alive? Sharp claws and jagged teeth closing in. You run, but everything slows. The creature's breathing intensifies, its poisonous breath slaps the back of your neck. A crack appears, the seams split, and reality crumbles. Are you falling or floating? The music echoes, raindrops against memories. The past, present, and future are one, birth and death the same moment. You scream—awaken, covered in sweat. The nightmare fades, shards of the dream fade into the ether. *** The wise one kneels before the altar, meditates as candles and incense burn. Through rhythmic breathing and concentration, spirit separates from body and roams the astral plane. The wandering soul happens across a curtain of blue velvet, blowing in the gentle breeze. The answers are behind the fabric—once pulled aside, everything shall be revealed. *** What is that? Is it real? It can't be… *** TRANSMUNDANE PRESS proudly announces a new anthology, this time exploring DREAMS, NIGHTMARES, VISIONS, and HALLUCINATIONS. We are looking for stories centered upon the mysterious powers of the mind—the images that bewitch us while we sleep, the terrors that make us dread bedtime, the prophecies delivered from the divine, and the illusions that appear tangible. SUBMISSIONS GUIDELINES: Send stories that are heavily edited and ready for us to read. These must be original pieces for first-time publication. WORD COUNT: No longer than 6,000 words. FORMATTING: Your submissions must be in 12 point, Times New Roman font, double-spaced with page numbers. We like headers in the top right...
Taking Submissions: Sockhops and Séances
Deadline: March 15th, 2018 Payment: Stories under 1,500 words are 4% of gross profit, Above that is 5% Anthology curated by Nicole Petit It seems like everything’s finally settled down, fifty years into the twentieth century. War is over. The economy’s booming. People are on a long exodus from the city. It’s all settling. But the occult lurks everywhere… In sleepovers, as teenagers intone, “Light as a feather, stiff as a board.” Or stare into the mirror, calling upon Mary. They scream, convinced something looks back from inside the glass. New music dominates the airwaves, discordant and wild. They say it’s the devil’s music. Strange lights dominate the sky. Are they Russians? Little Green Men? Or something altogether stranger? Perhaps things are not as settled as they feel… What We Want THE BASICS: Supernatural stories set in the 1950s. Not horror stories, necessarily, but stories that use the 1950s and its spook culture (and spook-busting culture) in an engaging way. Bring us supernatural adventures, supernatural mysteries, supernatural fantasy, or supernatural pulp. First and foremost, aim to capture the spirit of the era. That’s something we felt Speakeasies and Spiritualists succeeded with, in regards to the 1920s. THE SOCKHOPS: Historical accuracy is required. This extends beyond technology to attitudes, beliefs, and so on. See below for a full discussion of historical accuracy. We are open to stories starring (or featuring) historical figures. THE SÈANCES: Creative, fresh supernatural elements are preferred. Think more The Twilight Zone or The Outer Limits, and less Godzilla or The Beast from 20,000 Fathoms. While we’re not closed to submissions featuring traditional occult threats such as vampires, werewolves, etc., stories featuring these monsters will be a hard sell. Only the most outstanding stories will catch our eye. If you chose to use a monster—or someone pretending to be a monster—we’d prefer something wild. Think of The Blob,...
Taking Submissions: Hinnom Magazine (LIMITED WINDOW!)
Deadline: March 15th, 2018 Payment: $30 for stories under 3,000 words, $55 for those over 3,000 words Greetings from the Valley of Hinnom, With the amazing success of Hinnom Magazine during the year of 2017, we have decided to move onward with this publication and to make several big changes that will not only widen our reach to the darker side of literature, but will also benefit the authors. The issues will release bi-monthly, on the last day of every other month, starting in February 2018. We seek authors who have a unique voice, interesting writing styles, and unparalleled storytelling talents. We also encourage prospective authors to read one of our previous publications to get a feel of the atmosphere and themes we favor. We know a lot of publishers say this, but there is good reason for it. FICTION SUBMISSION DETAILS: Whereas last year’s issues of Hinnom Magazine were a bit more lenient, the 2018 volume is going to be much more specific in our themes since we have found our voice as a publication. Below, you will find the genres and subgenres that we adore. Again, if you read our previous releases, you will likely develop a solid understanding of what Hinnom Magazine represents in dark fiction. We are looking for stories that fit the themes of Weird Fiction and Cosmic Horror. Horror, Science Fiction, and Fantasy are all welcomed, as long as they fit in the realms of Weird and Cosmic. All stories must also be speculative in some way. What we mean by this is that we don’t want stories based in realism. While many great horror stories are plausible in modern reality, these stories are not for Hinnom Magazine. Thus, all horror MUST BE otherworldly or supernatural in some way. Science Fiction MUST BE dark and speculative. Fantasy MUST BE morally ambiguous and grim. Any combination of the above genres is fine. In fact, we encourage it. ...

Taking Submissions: The Modern Monarchist Zine
Deadline: March 19th, 2018 Payment: $1 for every 500 word (maximum stipulations listed below.) The Strange Edge Presents THE MODERN MONARCHIST, a semi-regular and thoroughly modern zine for the postmodern zinester. This is a free ezine available in several modern DIGITAL® formats which can be transmitted via the emails or downloadified. We are OPEN to unsolicited subs. DEADLINE: Currently, we are expecting to release our first issue in April. To have a chance to get into that issue, send us your submission by March 19th. That’s 19th March for all you non-Americans. SUBMISSION Guidelines: We are seeking only the finest FLASH FICTION, PROSE-POEMS, or ABSURD ARTICLES 1500 words or less. If we receive a submission that is over 1500 words, we will not only delete the submission unread, we will also delete the author from the spacetime continuum, forcing her or him to seek existence in an alternate Mandela. We are seeking a very specific brand of weird/bizarro literature that shares commonalities with the likes of Franz Kafka, Donald Barthelme, Mark Leyner, Russel Edson, Daniil Kharms, Barry Yourgrau, William S. Burroughs, Eugène Ionesco, David Lynch, Charlie Kaufman, Alejandro Jodorowsky, Quentin Dupieux, Yorgos Lanthimos, Guy Maddin, Remedios Varo, and Salvador Dali (I hope I don’t need a link to jog your memory about this guy). So whatever you send us is likely to get rejected, not because of quality but because of the very specific style we are seeking. Please don’t take any rejection personally. Also, the issues are short, quick-reads with only a few pieces selected for each. Reprints are fine, just let us know where the piece has been previously published, and make sure you have the electronic rights before submitting. Multiple Subs: You may submit multiple pieces at the same time—up to 3, provided each piece is less than 1500 words. It is not likely that more than one piece will be featured in any given...
Taking Submissions: Strange Horizons Southeastern USA Special
Deadline: March 19th, 2018 Payment: $50 In our fund drive last year, one of our stretch goals was a special issue focused on the work of writers who are black, indigenous, and/or people of color from the Southeastern USA, which is a region that we think tends to be underserved and underrepresented in speculative fiction. We raised part of that stretch goal at the time and made up the remainder through our recently concluded prize draw, so this issue is going to happen! We're planning it for Monday, July 30 2018. As our special issues usually do, it will feature original fiction, poetry, and non-fiction. We're very happy to announce that this special issue's fiction will be co-edited by one of the most acclaimed editors in shortform speculative fiction, the multiple World Fantasy Award-winning Sheree Renée Thomas! (Jennifer Marie Brissett interviewed Sheree for us in 2009, talking about her celebrated Dark Matter anthology series.) 2018 will feature Sheree in an editorial role in multiple projects, including the Trouble the Waters anthology from Rosarium Publishing and a special issue of Apex Magazine. We're very happy to see Sheree's editorial work getting more prominence and recognition in the field, as emerging writers and new contributors in her Dark Matter anthologies went on to become a National Book Award Finalist, a Pulitzer Prize Winner, and Tiptree, Bram Stoker, and World Fantasy Award Winners as well. But in a way this is also indicative of a problem we'd already recognized in designing this special issue: the list of names that come to mind when looking for an editor is always narrower than it should be. Partly this is because the field is usually not good at recognizing the talent that's already there; 2018 being a jubilee year of Sheree Renée Thomas is unfortunately the exception, not the rule. And partly because it's difficult for...

Taking Submissions Unnamed Corpus Press Halloween Anthology!
Deadline: March 30th, 2018 Payment: $.03 per word and 2 contributor's copies Corpus Press is now accepting submissions for a new Halloween-themed horror anthology. Submissions will be accepted according to our publishing needs, regardless of author publication history or status. Submissions should appeal to a wide audience (late teen to adult). What we are looking for: Not previously published short stories of 4,500-8,500 words that have a central theme associated with Halloween and can be characterized within the broad realm of “horror” fiction. Successful submissions will be highly original, well written and cleanly edited. Stories can be frightening, thought-provoking, atmospheric, humorous or satirical (or any combination thereof), but MUST contain a complete tale. What we are NOT looking for: Stories that have been hastily retrofitted with a coating of “Halloween” references to fit the submission guidelines. These are easily spotted and will be immediately rejected. Stories that contain excessively explicit language, sexuality and violence, or that have a main goal of shocking the audience with poor taste (language, sexuality and violence is acceptable, however, if it is essential to the story and is handled in a tasteful manner). This IS NOT an “extreme horror” or “Splatterpunk” anthology. Abstract mood pieces, vignettes, and highly experimental approaches to literature are discouraged. Stories featuring exaggerated dialects, colloquialisms or excessive references to pop culture or current fads are discouraged. We will not be accepting epistolary fiction for this anthology. Document Requirements: Submissions must be in an editable format. No PDFs or scanned documents sent as image files will be accepted. Preference is for author name, email address and word count information to be placed at the end of the document to assist in blind review process. Submission window: October 29, 2017 – March 30, 2018. No multiple submissions. Simultaneous submissions are okay,...

Taking Submissions: Weird Nature Anthology
Deadline: March 31st, 2018 Payment: 7c p/w up to 7K – 5c p/w for stories longer than 7K Edited by Lynne Jamneck Publisher: Dark Regions Press What are we doing? Where are we going? What will we find? Though some among us have realised the importance of sustainable living, in the broad sense of everyday life, we still demand too much. Our capitalist dispositions have driven a wedge between ourselves and nature; we have become transfixed by the shine of chrome, the luxury of packaged lives, no longer seemingly aware of the solid earth beneath our feet. At an ever-advancing tipping point, humanity persists in its war against the natural world. Running a trail of extinction and cutting down vast swathes of oxygen-producing forests, we breed at an alarming pace, overpopulating a planet we seem hell-bent on reigning in – but at what cost? It seems we’re playing a cruel joke on the system that sparked our existence, and which has sustained us ever since. Or could the joke be on us? There is something inherently weird in our behaviour toward Nature. Two distinct energies, two conscious mentalities, humanity and the natural world find themselves at loggerheads. Can we be held accountable if – as part of nature ourselves – we are driven by the need for survival, the way all species are? And if the answer is no, should we not anticipate that Nature will do the same? Force of Nature (working title) will be an anthology of original short fiction that explores the physical and metaphysical boundaries between humanity and the natural world. SUBMISSION GUIDELINES Story length: 2500 to 10 000 words Payment: 7c p/w up to 7K – 5c p/w for stories longer than 7K Send submissions to: forceofnaturesubs AT gmail DOT com Please send files in...

What we want: Weird, dark fiction; slipstream; magical realism; horror. Fiction with a touch of mythic quality. We want themes based around transformations—things that are shapeshifting, things that are emerging. Make Ovid’s Metamorphoses contemporary and weird and scary. We want a wide scope of voices, cultures, and perspectives. We don’t want: A lot of assaulted women turning into trees, pretty people turning into flowers, things written in Ovid’s voice. Lots of folks in togas. We don’t want splatter or pulp, though some body horror is fine and comes naturally with this theme. Details: This is a flash fiction anthology. We’re looking for stories that hover around the 1k-word mark, with 2k being the maximum allowed for consideration. Standard manuscript format. 6c/word for original fiction; 3c/word for reprints. Please let us know if Submittable is inaccessible to you and we will be happy to make other submission arrangements. Poetry as well. We are NOT accepting novels at this point. We're not stickler for submission guidelines as long as you use common sense. A few things will get you rejected without being read: - using the space bar to indent paragraphs - placing a hard return at the end of each line of text - sending your manuscript in a format other than docx or doc. Our style manual of preference is the Chicago Manual of Style (if that helps you). Sorry, no fan fiction. Contact Information should include: Real/Legal Name – for publishing contract Email address Street address – for delivery of contributor copy/royaltie “I walked up on the edge of no escape and laughed, I’ve lost control.” - Joy Division, 'She Lost Control' Are we ever really in control? Taking Submissions: Polar Borealis Magazine #7
Deadline: March 31st, 2018 Payment: $10 for one thousand words or less. One cent a word for stories 1,000 words to 3,000 words in length. POLAR BOREALIS is currently open to poetry and short story submissions. For issue #7 (to be published summer 2018) on any suitable theme (see below). Poetry and short story submissions will be accepted till further notice. Contributors must be Canadian, or at least resident in Canada. I prefer Science Fiction over Fantasy, though of course SF can include fantasy elements, so I’m flexible. Weird Fantasy would intrigue me. Also interested in Horror with SF aspects. Have a weakness for Lovecraftian Horror. Nothing obscene or ultra-violent. Idea-driven combined with character-driven would be ideal. Particularly interested in beginning writers who haven’t made a sale yet. The primary purpose of this zine is to encourage beginning writers. I welcome experienced authors but will judge unpublished writers as a separate category so they won’t have to compete with pros. Ideally at least two to three first-sale stories will be in in every issue. Be sure to mention whether you have been published or not so I’ll be sure to place you in the proper category. SPECIFICS: I offer First Publication English Language World Serial Online (PDF) Internet Rights with a post-publication exclusivity period of just one week, after which the author/artist is free to sell as a reprint to anyone anywhere. The exclusivity period is unusually short because I have no financial stake in holding on to rights and am more than willing to encourage the author to sell again ASAP. Note that reprints are less desirable to most publishers and are more difficult to place. On the other hand, my payment rates are so low you might even make more money selling your work as a reprint than you did selling it to...
Taking Submissions: The Shadow Booth
Deadline: March 31st, 2018 Payment: 1.5p per word. That works out as £15 per 1,000 words WE ARE NOW ACCEPTING SUBMISSIONS OF SHORT STORIES, UNTIL 31 MARCH 2018. PLEASE READ THE GUIDELINES BELOW BEFORE SUBMITTING. FICTION We will be opening for FICTION SUBMISSIONS for the entirety of March 2018. Note: we are open all the time for non-fiction for the website, but the fiction submissions period will open on 1st March and end at midnight on 31st March 2018. Here are some basic guidelines: We are a bi-annual journal of weird and eerie fiction. Do not send us your Western romance (in space). Do not send us your drug addiction memoir. Do not send us your shopping list (unless you're buying some really weird things). Weird. Eerie. Fiction. Please. If you want an idea of what we mean by weird and eerie, then read The Shadow Booth: Vol. 1. This is the best way to find out what we like! The ebook is only £5, and like all independent publications, we need your support to keep going. (Paperbacks, ebooks and subscriptions are available here. Okay, rant over...) If you want further pointers, why not read editor Dan Coxon's article on the Ginger Nuts of Horror website: Face the Strange. Submissions should be 2,000 - 8,000 words long. We won't quibble over a word or two, but otherwise those limits are fixed. We would particularly like to read stories by BAME writers, and by women writing within the weird/eerie horror scene. In our experience, these tend to be underrepresented within the genre. Having said that, if you fall into neither of these groups, we want to read your work too - all stories will be considered on an equal basis once they have been submitted. Please only submit one story during the submissions period. Any...
Taking Submissions: Battling in All Her Finery
Deadline: March 31st, 2018 Payment: 2 cents/word Special Call for Submissions: Battling in All Her Finery We are creating an anthology titled Battling in All Her Finery: Historical Accounts of Otherworldly Women Leaders. It will be a collection of speculative fiction stories about women leaders in any field. We use an inclusive definition of “woman” and “female,” and we welcome stories about anyone who identifies as a woman on some level. For this anthology, our pay will be 2 cents/word. We are particularly looking for stories from authors who are underrepresented in fiction: people of color, LGBTQ, non-Western religions and cultures. Each story is written from the perspective of someone who has been or been around the woman leader in question. Like our regular magazine, this narrator will also have a bio. Be certain that your story meets these requirements: First person 500-8,000 words in length Focuses on a woman leader Contains a speculative element Not a reprint Not a simultaneous submission Here are some ideas that we pitched when we made our Kickstarter, but this is meant to be inspirational and not definitive. Taking Submissions: Bikes in Space 6: Dragons
Deadline: April 1st, 2018 Payment: $30 minimum, details below With volume 5 in edits, it’s time to start planning the sixth volume of the Bikes in Space series of feminist bicycle science fiction, currently planned to come out in early 2020. The theme for this issue is: Dragons. Story length: 500 to 8,000 words (stories on the shorter end tend to appeal to me more). Deadline: April 1, 2018 (Changed from February 1st to avoid editorial burnout!) Format: Email a Word, Google, PDF, or txt/rtf document to elly at takingthelane dot com. I prefer to read submissions blindly, so please don’t include your name or contact details on your manuscript. Submissions of black and white illustrations or comics are also welcome. Pay: A percentage of net profits from the Kickstarter project used to fund the book is split evenly between contributors, not less than $30 per story. More about the themes: Stories can be in any science fiction or fantasy – ish genre: high fantasy, hard SF, space opera, fairy tales, solarpunk, spec fic, slipstream… anything but fanfic. Dragons can be literal or metaphorical, from a specific cultural tradition or entirely of your own invention. Surprise me! All stories must contain bicycles—the story doesn’t need to be about bicycling, but this element must be central enough that removing it would change the story significantly. Same goes with feminism. The story doesn’t have to be about feminism, but it does need to break from tired old gender stereotypes. I am especially looking for stories by writers who don’t often see their experiences reflected in mainstream science fiction and fantasy. P.S. Here’s a photo of an actual dragon bicycle for your enjoyment. Via: Taking The Lane.
