Ongoing Submissions: Nature’s ‘Futures’

Payment: SFWA approves though rate isn’t specified.

Futures

Futures is the award-winning science-fiction section of Nature and it accepts unsolicited articles. Each Futures piece should be an entirely fictional, self-contained story of around 850–950 words in length, and the genre should, broadly speaking, be ‘hard’ (that is, ‘scientific’) SF rather than, say, outright fantasy, slipstream or horror. Each item should be sent as a Word document attachment to [email protected], including full contact details and a 30-word autobiographical note to be appended to the story if published.

We ask contributors not to send presubmission enquiries but to send the whole story. Unsolicited artwork is not considered. Before submitting, prospective authors are advised to read earlier Futures stories at nature.com/futures; selected examples are also available here. More detailed guidelines can be found at http://blogs.nature.com/futureconditional/2015/04/19/how-to-write-for-nature-futures/.

Ongoing Submissions: Alfred Hitchcock’s Mystery Magazine

Payment: 5 to 8¢ a word

Finding new authors is a great pleasure for all of us here, and we look forward to reading the fiction you send us. Since we do read all submissions, there is no need to query first; please send the entire story. You don’t need an agent.

Because this is a mystery magazine, the stories we buy must fall into that genre in some sense or another. We are interested in nearly every kind of mystery: stories of detection of the classic kind, police procedurals, private eye tales, suspense, courtroom dramas, stories of espionage, and so on. We ask only that the story be about a crime (or the threat or fear of one). We sometimes accept ghost stories or supernatural tales, but those also should involve a crime.

You might find it useful to read one or more issues of AHMM; that should give you an idea of the kind of fiction we buy. For a sample copy, please send a check made out to Alfred Hitchcock’s Mystery Magazine for $9.50 (all double issues)* to:

Alfred Hitchcock’s Mystery Magazine
Attn: Sandy Marlowe
6 Prowitt Street
Norwalk, CT 06855

*Please add $2.00 for shipping outside the U.S.

Submissions

AHMM uses an online submission system that was designed to streamline our process and improve communication with authors. We encourage all submissions to be made electronically using this system, rather than on paper. Our online submissions form for fiction asks for your name, e-mail address, cover letter, story title, and story. Your cover letter should state a little about you and your publishing history (briefly!), and any other relevant information. All stories should be in standard manuscript format and submitted in .DOC format.  At this time, our system does not support .DOCX, .RTF, or .TXT files. For information about standard formatting, see William Shunn’s guide to Proper Manuscript Format.

After you have submitted your work, a tracking number will be displayed and an automated e-mail confirmation containing this information will be sent to you. If you have not received this e-mail within twenty-four hours, please notify us by e-mail. Your tracking number will allow you to monitor the status of your submission through our Web site, so please don’t lose it. NOTE: Some service providers occasionally treat our e-mails as spam, so please keep an eye on your spam folder.

At this time, paper submissions can be mailed to: Alfred Hitchcock’s Mystery Magazine, 44 Wall Street, Suite 904, New York, NY 10005. Please include an SASE for our response.

Our rates for original stories are from 5 to 8¢ a word, sometimes higher for established authors. AHMM does not accept stories previously published in the United States.

Style. We prefer that stories not be longer than 12,000 words; most of the stories in the magazine are considerably shorter than that. They should, of course, be well written. We are looking for stories that are fresh, well told, and absorbing, and have not been previously published elsewhere. They should be entirely fiction: Please do not send us stories based on actual crimes, for instance, or other real-life events.

Revisions. Revised versions of a story should be submitted only on our request, as a rule. At the very least, tell us in the cover letter that the story has been submitted before but has been revised, and explain how.

NOTE: Stories submitted to AHMM are not also considered by or for Ellery Queen Mystery Magazine, though we share the same address. Submissions to EQMM must be made separately.

Please do not simultaneously submit the same story to AHMM and EQMM. If we reject your story, for whatever reason, you are then free to submit it to EQMM (and vice versa).

What They Want: “A publisher we usually associate with darker material! Honestly, we had no idea they did a children’s magazine as well and this is what inspired us to put the list together! FrostFire Worlds publishes original science fiction and fantasy short stories, poems, art, articles, reviews, and interviews. Preferred are adventure stories, space opera, and magic opera [like space opera, but fantasy]. Also preferred are stories that take place on other worlds. Stories must have the following: characters the reader cares about, plots and subplots, and settings that draw the reader into them.”

Full Guidelines Can Be Found At: Alban Lake.

East of the Web

Payment: $0.05 per word with a minimum of $200.
Note: Children’s short stories, ages 5 to 12.

What They Want: “We’re seeking children’s stories aimed at age ranges between 5 and 12. We’re looking for stories written by authors who know children and what children want to read. We want storytellers who can capture a child’s imagination and who also know the children’s book market, know what’s original and understand what’s interesting and appropriate for children of the age their stories are aimed at. We consider stories of all genres as long as kids will love them!”

Full Guidelines Can Be Found At: East of the Web.

Payment: $6.00 for each accepted original story; $2.00 for each accepted story reprint; $2.00 for each accepted poem; and 10.00 for the door art.
Note: Age range of readers is “8 to 17 and beyond”

What They Want: “Spaceports & Spidersilk is an online magazine for younger readers [8 to 17 and beyond]. Formerly it was called KidVisions. Spaceports & Spidersilk features short stories, poems, and art, as well as brief essays on science and the environment, interviews, quizzes, contests, [and, quite frankly, anything else that is genre-oriented and will help encourage the younger generation to read…and to dream, especially about going to the stars]. We at Nomadic Delirium Press hope that younger writers and artists, as well as adults, will submit their work.

The genres for Spaceports & Spidersilk include fantasy, science fiction, and a category we are going to define as ‘shadow stories’. Shadow stories are mild horror. We want spooky, not terrifying. Most of all, we want ADVENTURES! And especially SF or fantasy adventures.”

Full Guidelines Can Be Found At: Spaceports & Spidersilk’s Submissions Page.

Guardian Angel Kids

We aim for a 12-17 age range: that means sophisticated, non-condescending stories with wide appeal, and without gratuitous or explicit sex, violence or pervasive obscene language. Think Harry Potter or The Hunger Games.” Fantasy, Science Fiction, and Horror are all accepted but read the guidelines for specifics.

Ongoing Submissions: Odd Tales Of Wonder

Payment: Royalties

It is recommended that authors check out this piece from Odd Tales Resist to get a deeper look at what we’re looking for, on top of the following guidelines.

· Please use the following formatting: single spaced, even between paragraphs. 12 point font, Times New Roman. 1” margins, top, bottom, left, and right. No page numbers or title pages necessary, word counts optional. We accept .odt, .doc, .docx, and .rtf, but no PDFs, s’il vous plait.

· Length: up to you. As seen on the About page, we will serialize longer pieces. And if you can tell a good story in 150 words, we’ll take that too.

· Ask us beforehand about poetry—no non-fiction will be considered for the time being. HOWEVER, we are currently accepting true ghost stories. Content must be original and entertaining, and it must conform to the other guidelines where relevant.

· If your story has been published previously under circumstances where copyright may be an issue, query first before submitting.

· Simultaneous submissions are cool, but let us know immediately when your piece has been accepted elsewhere. Please note that we will only publish one story per author per issue except under special circumstances.

· At present, all book submissions will be treated as submissions for serialization in the Odd Tales magazine. Odd Tales Resist is currently closed to outside submissions, but stories in the theme of OTR are encouraged for the main magazine.

· All genres are welcome but we are definitely a genre fiction magazine: horror, sci-fi, fantasy, mystery, and adventure all get priority. Romance, drama, and slice-of-life will probably not get in unless we really like it.

· We are fine with vulgarity, profanity, and some graphic content. Keyword there: some. Your characters can have sex but it can’t be adult content. And while violence is fine, lengthy descriptions of extensive dismemberment will severely count against your story.

· Don’t be racist, sexist, homophobic, transphobic, etc. Just don’t be an asshole at any stage of the process. And yes, the editors are the ones who get to decide you’re being an asshole.

· Be yourself, and be good to yourself. Don’t write it if you aren’t.

If this sounds like the thing for you, please submit your story to [email protected]. We look forward                                                                                           to hearing from you!

Ongoing Submissions: Ogrezine

Payment: 6 cents per word and contributor’s copy.

Ogrezine is a PDF magazine published by Steve Jackson Games in Austin, TX. It is devoted to the game of Ogre in its many forms. Over the 40 years that Ogre has existed, there has frequently been support from fans’ in the form of articles, scenarios, fiction and artwork. Many of these endeavors found their way into the pages of The Space Gamer magazine, and some were later collected as The Ogre Book. Although earlier editions of Pyramid magazine also contained articles in support of Ogre, the current version is focused on GURPS, and thus not an appropriate vehicle for Ogre submissions. The goal of Ogrezine is to provide an outlet for fans creativity and further the game via new content. Ogrezine may be purchased through Warehouse 23.

We get many queries and submissions, more than we could ever use, so a lot of perfectly good articles get rejected. If this happens to you (and it will . . .), please don’t take it personally. If the Editor has any comments or suggestions, take them to heart. If you’re asked to resubmit the article after making certain changes, do it; sometimes an article simply needs a tweak or two to make it publishable. Perseverance is a good thing.
