WIHM 2022: An Interview With Editor Alyson Faye
In celebration of Women in Horror Month, we are continuing to highlight some of the amazing work that women have been doing compiling and editing magazines and story collections in the horror industry. We’re continuing our Women Who Edit Interview series with Alyson Faye.
Could you introduce yourself, and tell us a little about you?
I am Alyson Faye, writer, tutor, editor, proofreader. I live in the UK, with my family and rescue animals. I co-run the indie press, Black Angel, with Stephanie Ellis https://blackangelpressblog.wordpress.com/ – where we publish women dark fiction writers at all stages of their writing journey.
I also am an editor for the indie press, Bridge House and associate editor on The Casket of Fictional Delights.
What is (or was) the most rewarding aspect of editing an anthology, magazine, or collection?
I enjoy working with language, and co-editing with Steph Ellis has been productive and fun, bouncing ideas off each other and discussing the stories. Solo editing is intense, it’s all on me then; I enjoy the online working relationships with the writers too- the exchange of ideas, trying to co-produce a more polished, successfully smooth work.
What is (or was) the worst aspect of editing an anthology, magazine, or collection?
The repetition, the checking and rechecking of all the details.
In your opinion, what are the most important aspects of creating a collection or issue?
Having a cohesive creative artistic vision of what you want from the collection and how each story will slot into that and flesh out the framework.
Is there anything you’d like people to know about you or your work?
It’s not as easy as you think it sounds!

Holley Cornetto was born and raised in Alabama, but now lives in New Jersey where she writes dark fantasy, horror, and weird fiction. To date, her writing appears in over a dozen magazines and anthologies. To indulge her love of books and stories, she became a librarian.
