Taking Submissions: The Benevolent Apocalypse

The Benevolent Apocalypse Deadline: August 31st 2011 Payment: $20/published story Timid Pirate Publications seeks short stories (1,000-6,000 words) set after the apocalypse. In the next cycle of expanding humanity, communities thrive in a post-industrial world. This is the reign of the makers, the doers, the community builders, the farmers and those who work with tangible objects, producing and creating. The collapse of money, the stock market and centralized government has led to smaller, more tightly-knit communities where adventures, mysteries and tales of the human abound. The chaos is over, and rebuilding is well underway. What characters and situations have arisen? You tell us. What happens when people keep calm and carry on? What happens when many people’s jobs vanish overnight, and they return to the land and their innate powers? How do people come together, rediscover rapture and build new lives together? What countries adapt better, and what communities thrive? The end of the the world is the new frontier. Worlds and civilizations die, but the survivors find a way to move on. We feel that most post apocalypse anthologies are primarily focused on the fire or the ash. We want to show the phoenix that results instead What we're not looking for: Solitary, angry, lonely, desperate, fearful figures in a bleak or desolate landscape. Not fantasy. What we are looking for: Inventive, speculative tales of human connection, community and discovery. That could be a murder mystery that rocks a settlement, it could be a big-farm versus little farm economic rivalry, or the capture of a con artist that surprises a community of carpenters that design his cage, a drought threatening a region alleviated by a traveling scientist and his physics lessons...the stories are unlimited. As long as community plays a big role, it fits under the joyfully benevolent apocalypse...

Taking Submissions: Walking Down the Sky, Volume 1

Walking Down the Sky, Volume 1 Deadline: August 31, 2011 Payment: Payment is $10 per short story, $5 per poem or art submission, contributor's copy, discounted copies Cold Moon Press is excited to announce guidelines for the first volume of their annual anthology, Walking Down the Sky. The Fun Stuff Volume One (to be subtitled later) will focus on the full moon as viewed by other cultures, such as the Cold Moon in December (or January, depending which culture you explore). What would happen in your story during Hungry Ghost Moon? Who would your main character meet during the Moon of Winds? (If you need help getting started, use your search engine to find "full moon names," and you'll find plenty of ideas!). Poetry and art submissions should also incorporate this theme. We want stories for each month of the year, and one bonus story, for a total of 13 titles. We prefer urban fantasy, fantasy, science fiction, and horror. While the tone of this anthology is dark (and we are ok with not-so-happy endings), we are trying to keep this rated PG-13. Therefore, work that is explicitly sexual or violent would be best suited for a different publication. Note: If your story is exceptional and we have already filled the space for the month you are exploring, we may still be interested in publication. We are opening a short story line for the press this fall. Your work may be considered for this. More details will be available soon! The Mechanical Stuff The guidelines are as follow: Stories should be between 3,000 - 10,000 words. Query first for longer work. Poems may be up to 28 lines. Art should be 300 dpi or higher. Submit as a .jpg. Writing should be submitted in Word documents with .doc file extensions....
