Taking Submissions: Fear’s Accomplice
Deadline: February 28th 2014 Payment: Equal share of profits in the form of royalty payments We are currently looking for submissions for our first ever publication! Closing date: 28th of February, 2014. More than anything we want to see horror stories between 2,000 and 8,000 words. The tales can be any type of horror fiction, from perverted lunatics to rampaging aliens. All we ask is that it is something original. Gore is acceptable as long as the story is not just violence. We're looking for interesting characters and narratives. If your story takes place in an alternate universe or on a distant planet, then above all it has to be believable. Stories do not need to be straight up in-your-face kind of horror, sometimes a more subtle approach is just as entertaining. We hope to attract a wide range of submissions. Document format is not particularly important, but all manuscripts should be created in Microsoft Word (.doc or .docx). When submitting please use the word 'Submission' as the subject. Please include your name and email address at the top of your manuscript and please also number the pages. Should you wish to hype your own ability by telling us of awards you have won or previous publications you have had, then please do so in the main body of the email. If your submission happens to be unsuccessful then we will aim to provide you with some feedback and we hope that it will not put you off the idea of submitting again in the future. We intend to make our debut release via Create Space to save on cost. All contributing authors will receive an equal share of the profits, NoodleDoodle Publications will take one author's share. If I (the creator of NoodleDoodle) use one of my stories I...
Taking Submissions: Despumation
Deadline: February 28th, 2014 Payment: $10/piece + a hard copy of the issue your piece appears in. Despumation is a literary magazine published by Despumation Press (go figure). Before you do anything, read this. Seriously. As a matter of fact, it’s a really good idea if you read everything on this page and the links provided, which actually isn’t very much. Because we can tell if you haven’t read it. You’ve been warned. For our first issue, we’re concentrating on song stories: short fiction based on your favorite metal song. To get a good idea as to what we’re looking for, click here. When I read your story out loud, I want to hear the metal. Trying to figure out how to structure your story? Listen to (a) song; use its rhythm and tempo to hammer out (a) plot and timing. Are you at a place where the topic or action seems particularly “metal” to you? Read it out loud. What does it sound like? Are there some consonants that sound more pounding, or sharp, or burning, or stabbing? Are there some vowels that drone on, drag out? Use those words, but don’t sacrifice meaning. How about your setting? Does it evoke the plodding of the drums and bass? Does it look like the vocalist sounds? I know, right? It’s harder than you thought it’d be. This is what I’m looking for. Stories that celebrate a (metal)’s theme(s) and sound; stories that read like a live show. Stories that make the reader feel like they’ve just spent twelve hours with a warm beer in their hand, satisfyingly half-time nodding to the bowel-shaking pulse of a double bass, or like they’ve just crawled out of a pit and are wondering if maybe something is broken. It’ll be a challenge for the writer, but I...
Taking Submissions: Amok!
Deadline: February 28th 2014 or until filled Payment: There will be five Editor’s Choice Awards for $30 CAN each. Each Editor’s Choice Award winner will receive a free contributor paperback copy and $30 amok (also amuck) adv. 1. In a frenzy to do violence or kill; 2. In or into a jumbled or confused state; 3. In or into an uncontrolled state or a state of extreme activity. The flagship title for our planned series of volumes under the banner 'Short Sharp Shocks' is 'Amok!'. Why not 'Amuck'? We like Amok more. Who, exactly, should be running amok? That's up to you. An average Joe snaps, an old-folk's home goes on a murderous rampage, giant monsters level your least favorite city, a good old psychopath picks up his favorite mask and hatchet or irradiated gerbils terrorize a town - the sky's the limit! What we are looking for: Short stories with a sting in the tail. Stories that grab the reader from the opening line and shake them into submission, finally delivering a punchline like a slap in the face with a large fish. Don't be afraid to inject a little dark humor if need be, but slapstick is out. Settings: Anything goes, any genre, any time period. If the story is compelling and the characters relatable, then we will be happy to consider your work. Story length: We are looking for stories in the 2000 - 5000 word range. See the submissions page for other requirements. Submission period will be from December 1st 2013 until February 28th 2014 or until book is filled, so don't wait until the last minute. Taking Submissions: Big Pulp: Zombie Edition
Deadline: February 28th, 2014 Payment: 1¢ per word up to 2500 words (minimum $5.00; maximum $25.00) Big Pulp is now OPEN for submissions. PLEASE READ THESE GUIDELINES CAREFULLY BEFORE SUBMITTING! BIG PULP is now accepting submissions for an upcoming Zombie-themed collection. Deadline: February 28, 2014 Big Pulp is seeking submissions of fiction related to zombies (sorry, no poems this time). zombie zombiezombie2 We love the undead, but the term "zombie" can be interpreted a lot of ways. Successful subs will look outside the box. We've seen zombie plagues, zombies hordes, zombie hunters, and zombie super-heroes. What else have you got? Characters matter. So does story. Would your story work without zombies? If so, chances are good we'd like to see it. As always, we'll consider all genres, providing they link back to the theme. So, zombie SF, zombie mystery or romance, fantasy or horror - it's all good. For this reading period, we are accepting submissions on this theme only. We are not reading or accepting work not related to zombies. Submissions that do not fall under the theme will be returned to the author. Send submissions to submissions (at) bigpulp (dot) com General guidelines and payment terms are listed below. Once again: zombies only. GUIDELINES Big Pulp is an online journal featuring genre fiction and artwork of all kinds. We are actively seeking submissions of prose, poetry, photography, artwork, and comics for our pages. We define “pulp fiction” very broadly – it’s lively, challenging, thought-provoking, thrilling, and fun, regardless of how many or how few genre elements are packed in. We don’t subscribe to the theory that genre fiction is disposable; in our opinion, a great deal of literary fiction could easily fall under one of our general categories. Fiction, Non-Fiction, Poetry Big Pulp requests print and electronic rights....

No fan fiction please, as much as we'd love to see your Spiderman slash. And keep in mind, too, that you don't have to wear a cape to be a superhero. So dust off your powers, focus on your archenemy and then save the universe. In this issue of Penumbra, we expect Marvel-worthy deeds of daring. Taking Submissions: XIII
Deadline: March 13th, 2014 Payment: 5 cents/word RESURRECTION HOUSE is seeking science fiction, fantasy, horror, and creative non-fiction for a loosely themed anthology to be released in the winter of 2015. Stories should be between 1,000 and 7,000 words, and pay will be 5 cents/word. Reprints are not out of the question, but will be handled on an individual basis. Deadline for submissions is March 13th, 2014. Stories should be sent as email attachments in either .RTF or .DOC format to [email protected] with the word “XIII” somewhere in the subject line. When Mark Teppo, the founder of Resurrection House, acquired Underland Press, he wanted to start numbering the titles that would be released under the new imprint. Before doing so, he wishes to acknowledge and celebrate What Was and What Will Be. “Thirteen” is the first month of a new yearly cycle, wherein the old skins have been shed and the newborns are still learning to walk. “One” and “Three” make “Four,” which is the number of completion, of coming home, and of realizing the form that has been in process for some time. Nothing is true; everything is possible. And the more things change, the more they stay the same. The thirteenth Tarot card is Death, and he is the symbol of transformation and rebirth. This is the genesis and root of XIII. Some broad examples of transformative stories are Gene Wolfe’s Book of the New Sun, Franz Kafka’sMetamorphosis, Darren Aronofsky’s The Fountain, Matt Wagner’s Grendel comic series, and David Lynch’sLost Highway as well as his Fire, Walk With Me. Also consider the plight of Bottom in A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Innana’s descent into the Underworld, and the stories of Osiris, Tammuz, Adonis, and Attis. Via: Resurrection House.

Taking Submissions: Fear of the Unknown – A Tribute To H.P. Lovecraft
Deadline: March 15th, 2014 Payment: Exposure Only “That is not dead which can eternal lie, And with strange aeons even death may die.” What We Want: Lovecraft style horror stories, particularly new takes on the Cthulhu Mythos. Lovecraftian horror is defined as a style of storytelling involving a set of supernatural, pre-human, and extraterrestrial elements. The hallmark of Lovecraft’s work is cosmicism: the sense that ordinary life is a thin shell over a reality that is so alien and abstract in comparison that merely contemplating it would damage the sanity of the ordinary person. Lovecraft’s work is also steeped in the insular feel of rural New England, and much of the genre continues to maintain this sense that “that which man was not meant to know” might be closer to the surface of ordinary life outside of the crowded cities of modern civilization. Word Count: 500-2,500 words. Closing Date: 15 March 2014. Submissions may close sooner if the anthology fills quickly. Reprints: Yes. Multiple Submissions: No. Simultaneous Submissions: No. Payment: This is a non-paying market. Payment for your story is exposure in the anthology. How To Submit: Submit it as a .doc or .rtf attachment to [email protected] with the subject line “Lovecraft”. Include your name, story title, word count, and a brief biography in the body of the email. Via: Dreamscape Press.

Taking Submissions: Sulfurings
Deadline: March 23rd 2014 Payment: For flash fiction, the pay is $3 per story; for short stories, pay is $7 per story; for essays, pay is $11; for poems, pay is $13 per poem. In addition, each contributor will receive a digital copy of the anthology in which they appear. Note: There are 2 other guidelines linked to at the bottom of the post, if you are going to submit I suggest reading them all A long time ago, there were two ancient cities that have come upon their own unique reputations among the cities of history and legend: Sodom and Gomorrah. How you interpret the legend does not matter to the garden gnomes. We care more for how the inhabitants of the city dealt with their circumstances after the departure of Lot and his family. Tell us a story. “Sulfurings” is the title we’re giving our anthology of stories concerning the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah. In Genesis 19, God rained down burning sulfur on the cities. The question for you is this, Who lived in Sodom and Gomorrah and how did they cope with this sudden calamity? We want apocalyptic and post-apocalyptic visions. Please focus on the characters and their attempts to survive – both during and after the rain. The garden gnomes are accepting flash fiction pieces, short stories, poems, and essays that deal with this theme. All formats should present a provocative glimpse into the lives of the inhabitants of these ancient cities. Show us their lives unraveling in the rain of God’s wrath, their clothes tattered and torn, their hearts reaching out to those they love and those they loathe, but most of all, give us your speculative storytelling best. We have just one stipulation: No characters can be member’s of Lot’s family. Create from...

Taking Submissions: Deep Sea Monster Hunter – Leviathan
Deadline: March 31st 2014 Payment: $25 Reading Period: Open through 3/31/14 Word Count: 2,000 to 10,000 words Payment: $25 per story Files Accepted: Doc, Docx, RTF No Multi-Subs or Sim-Subs Genres: Fiction, Horror, Sci-Fi. Stories may set in the past, present or near future. There is nothing quite like sailing upon the sea at night. The size of your craft matters little as you realize that nothing mankind has ever made could be considered large out here. The knowledge that things larger than you and your craft are swimming beneath you is another sobering thought. They have tentacles and teeth. You are utterly helpless in the water. Should the frail safety of your craft fail you, you will almost certainly die a most horrible death as you become a meal. All of this is enough to send panic coursing through your veins, and these are just the simple realities of the sea. The tales that are dreamt of and told are worse. Much worse. These are the stories thatLEVIATHAN is looking for. Give us the Kraken. Give us giant sharks. Give us undiscovered depths, unexplored islands and all of the horrible things that live there. Give us any monster you can dream of that lives in or around the sea… Then give us the hunters that battle them. Submit to Emby Press Source: Emby Press.
Taking Submissions: Superhero Monster Hunter – The Good Fight
Deadline: March 31st 2014 Payment: $25 Reading Period: Open through 3/31/14 Word Count: 2,000 to 10,000 words Payment: $25 per story Files Accepted: Doc, Docx, RTF No Multi-Subs or Sim-Subs Genres: Fiction, Horror, Sci-Fi, Fantasy. Stories may set in the past, present or future Sometimes one of us possesses power and ability greater than others. When we use these for the greater good, we become heroes. But it is not easy to be different, to carry the responsibility that comes with the power or to bear the burden of what else might come with it – weakness, vulnerability and the other things that must remain hidden for the power to survive… And survive that power must, because the others are out there, lurking in the shadows. With mighty powers of their own and a thirst for mayhem, destruction, or blood, they cannot be stopped by the common man. Only by you. Protect your identity. Guard your weaknesses. Use the powers that only you have to fight the creatures and forces of evil as they prey upon humanity. THE GOOD FIGHT is looking for these stories. Give us a traditional superhero, a giant fighting robot, or a child with a link to the ‘other side’. Let them protect the world against monsters large and small, inhuman or a human so subverted by evil that they are no longer one of us. Make the fights spectacular. Make us cringe for the hero and want to fight the villain ourselves. But most of all, give great consideration as to whether or not the power that the hero holds is enough, because sometimes it isn’t… Submit to Emby Press Source: Emby Press.

Taking Submissions: State Of Horror: Illinois & New Jersey
Deadline: April 1st 2014 Payment: royalty-only payment schedule plus a contributor paperback copy. The royalties are 50% of the sales per eBook and Print book divided between the authors. Each book will contain 13 stories. Do you think you have a horror story for the anthology? You do not have to have lived in the state to create a well-spun tale set in the state being featured. The stories are not just taking a current story and peppering it with city names or landmarks either. The culture, landscape, and feel of the state should be a part of the entire story. We want a local to be able to identify with the story. The use of local folklore, geography, and history can bring a tale to life. The story can be from any time period. It is highly recommended avoiding clichés, as that will hinder the chances of being included. Look beyond the standard gangster stories for Chicago (not that this cannot make a great story) and dig a little deeper into something original. The anthologies will contain engaging horror stories, textured characters, and well developed plot. Easy enough? We are looking for stories between 2,500 and 7,500 words. Any submission that falls outside this range will be returned (unread). Previously published stories will be accepted, but please include where it was published and publish date. Submission will only be accepted through email at [email protected] as a .doc file (Word) attachment. The subject of the email should contain “State of Horror: (with either Illinois or New Jersey). If the email subject does not contain this information, it will be deleted unread. At this time, we will only be accepting stories for these two collections. In the body of your submission email, please provide a brief cover letter with your information,...

We want to see stories that explore the emotional and psychological ramifications of isolation. There are great depths to be delved with a cast of one.
