Contest: Zombie Writing Contest! Win a $20.00 Gift Card!
Contest: Zombie Writing Contest! Win a $20.00 Gift Card! OK! Hold your horses. 2 posts today, one with an actual submission and one for this contest. I figure the majority of the writers who come here probably have something short laying around they could re-work to enter this contest. If you win, hey it's an easy $10 or $20 from taking one of your super rough drafts or jotted down ideas and fine tuning it for this. You won't get anything in print from winning aside from it being posted on their website. It doesn't look as if they keep any rights to it so you can do what you want with it after the fact. Deadline: Sept. 29, 2011 Costume Craze is launching a special Blog contest, to help you get ready for Halloween! The grand prize is a $20.00 gift card, and we’ll also be giving away $10.00 gift cards to runner-up winners. Here’s how to enter: 1. First, read our blog post Zombies Invade Costume Craze! 2. Then, write an original short story describing a zombie attack, and submit it to [email protected]. Keep it short, between 200 – 1,000 words. Be sure to include your first name and city where you live. The deadline for submitting your story is Sept. 29, 2011. All entries MUST include the following: 1. Include at least one type of zombie as described in the blog post. 2. Describe the location of your zombie battle. 3. Describe what weapon(s) you use in battle. 4. Include Costume Craze in some way. *Please create an original story for this contest. If you submit a story previously published elsewhere, our zombie judges will KNOW and you will be disqualified, and possibly eaten. Submissions are now open for the next FableCroft anthology, tentatively titled Apocalypse Hope (we toyed with After the Apocalypse, but Maureen McHugh has already pinched that one!). Is there no hope for a future that follows? FableCroft Publishing is seeking speculative fiction stories on the theme “Apocalypse Hope”. The stories must in some way address the idea that after the apocalypse (whatever and wherever in your universe that might be), there is a future for the peoples who survive it. The rest is up to your imagination. Stories should be between 2,000 and 8,000 words. Please query the editor before sending stories outside those limits. Original stories are preferred. Taking Submissions: Corrupts Absolutely?
Taking Submissions: Corrupts Absolutely?
Corrupts Absolutely? Deadline: October 1st, 2011 Payment: Payment is in the form of shared royalties (40% electronic, 25% print) a dark metahuman fiction reader edited by lincoln crisler Lord Acton originally wrote, “Power tends to corrupt, and absolute power corrupts absolutely.” Modern pop-culture is brimming over with stories of bright, polished men and women with iron wills and indestructible moral codes, who throw themselves into a life of public service after being graced (or cursed) with cosmic powers, a magic ring, puberty-activated mutant genes or robot suits. I call bullshit. Suddenly discovering that you’re different from baseline humanity is certainly the sort of thing that could change one’s worldview overnight, but that just isn’t interesting, especially since it’s been done ad infinitum. How about the people that look out for ‘Number One?’ People with flaws? People with serious psychological issues? People that have been looking for a ticket out of their circumstances and finally lucked into it? People who’ve devoted themselves to their success and have reached it, at long last? The nerdy kid who doesn’t have to be pushed around and isn’t willing to hide anymore? The jealous girl that’s tired of being the ‘other woman?’ The disenfranchised homeless man? The bored housewife who wishes she’d made some different choices? To some, this just screams ‘supervillain,’ or ‘antihero,’ and in many cases, you’d be right. But usually, these are stock characters without much substance. They’re the “bad guys.” Real life isn’t that simple, and even the meatier, more realistic metahuman portrayals out there are seen mainly in comic books; rarely in a prose anthology. Show me substance. Show me what would really happen if today’s people had superpowers. I’m looking for stories of 3,000 to 5,000 words that handle the topic of superpowers and metahumans from unique, interesting and...
Taking Submissions: Mutation Nation
Taking Submissions: Mutation Nation
Mutation Nation Deadline: October 1st, 2011 Payment: $50.00 + 1 Contributor's Copy Tales of Genetic Mishaps, Monsters, and Madness Edited by: Kelly Dunn Mutations. Such tiny changes, such radical extremes. Mutations are not what we expect and more than we bargained for. The red-headed beauty on the fashion catwalk, Cronenberg's "Brundlefly" abomination—both are the result of mutations, but with wildly different results. Mutations can beautify or deform, create or destroy. Mutations have the power to build a new physical look, alter brain chemistry, affect emotions. With mutations in the mix, humans can wind up stranded in a hellish unfinished limbo, or evolve a little too well into something the rest of us might not recognize. Who are these human oddities? How do these characters and/or the people in their lives deal with the curse—or the blessing—of their mutations? This anthology will contain stories that explore these human mutations—and their consequences. Your mutation story should contain these basic elements: One or more human characters with a single or multiple mutations. One or more human characters dealing with a problem/problems related to the mutation. If your mutation results in a monster, that monster should be a new or different twist on humanity—not a vampire, werebeast, zombie, or other overly familiar supernatural creature. The form the mutation takes is up to you. You might choose a mutation that causes physical changes, and/or changes in brain chemistry; a mutation known to biological science or one of your own design. The mutation could be the result of an experiment, environmental factors, or even caused in some way by the character's own actions. There are infinite possibilities to explore. I am looking for compelling characters, strong plotting, and vivid imagery. I would prefer that the feeling of terror be mingled with a sense of wonder or...
Taking Submissions: Drabble Calender
Taking Submissions: Drabble Calender
Drabble Calender Deadline: October 1st 2011 Payment: Exposure Only Earlier this year I decided for 2012 I wanted to create a calendar which was fun, and would include as much work as possible from the many talented writers and artist who have or will submit to KnightWatch Press the idea I came up with was as follows and I feel now is a good time to make a start. I am looking for about 24-26 pieces of drabble fiction (DRABBLE: noun - a story told with one hundred words no more no less. For this market the title and your name are not part of the 100 words ) and 24-36 pieces of art that will accompany them. My idea is to open submissions to writers first who will submit their pieces of Drabble once they are in then I will send a drabble to an artist who will 'illustrate' them when I say illustrate it can be a drawn image, a painted image, a photograph or even a sculpture (which we would of course require a photo of.) It will be done under that KnightWatch banner so anything horror sci fi steampunk or fantasy will be perfect and as for deadline lets put a lose one of October 1st or until I think I have enough ;) Writers send submissions to [email protected] with the subject line Drabble Calender - submission Artists please email me at [email protected] with the subject line Drabble Calender - I'm an artist to let me know you are interested. Once I have the submission 'put together' I would format them all into a calendar for 2012. This would be a for exposure only project that said I will of course enable contributors to buy copies of the calender at cost. I would print the calendars...

Taking Submissions: Cafe Doom’s Seventh Annual Short Story contest
Taking Submissions: Cafe Doom’s Seventh Annual Short Story contest
Cafe Doom's Seventh Annual Short Story contest Deadline: October 30th, 2011 Payment: Prizes listed below It was a real struggle getting things together this year, but we got there in the end. We are teaming-up with a promising and relatively new publishing company called One Buck Horror, for this year's competition. Here are this year's guidelines: We're looking for the best in original horror fiction in 3000 words or less: classically-styled tales in the tradition of writers like Richard Mattheson, Stephen King and Robert Bloch, yet wholly original and modern. We're open to all themes and subgenres, as long as it's effectively written and, above all, scary. The winning entry will be published in a future volume of One Buck Horror, and receive a professional payment rate of 5 cents per word. All entries must conform to our submission guidelines, which can be found at www.onebuckhorror.com/submissions. We’re sticking with the same format as the past few years, which is a fairly unusual way to run a comp, because all the entrants get to have their say about the stories and pick their favourites. What happens is each entrant has to join the Cafe Doom forum (if they’re not already a member), then send their entry to blunted (at) cafedoom.com via an e-mail attachment in .rtf or .txt format, single spaced, line breaks instead of indents to denote paragraphs, and use BB Code to format any italics, etc. In the body of the e-mail, they must state their forum name and the title of their story. DO NOT POST YOUR STORY IN THE BODY OF THE E-MAIL. On 31st October, the day following the closing date of the competition, all the stories will be posted anonymously on one forum thread by the forum admin. Thereafter, and for the following seven days...
