Rolling Submissions: Oxygen Leaks

Payment: .01 cents per word

Theme: Science fiction with a very technical “hard science fiction” angle

Note: Reprints accepted at an unlisted lower rate.

What we are looking for

We are looking for strong science fiction with a very technical “hard science fiction” angle. As with all good science fiction, the science needs to be integral to the story. If you can remove the science from the story and still have a good story, it is likely not what we are looking for.

Part of our criteria for review is how fantastic the scientific advances get. We will rate a story higher if it uses plausible advances in science as plot elements over a story that uses unlikely advances such as faster than light travel or teleportation. That said, we believe “hard” science fiction is a continuum, and an otherwise internally consistent story that uses fantastic elements could be an excellent story right for our magazine.

We also understand that science is not limited to physics, chemistry, and biology. Stories based on scientific advances in psychology, sociology, or even English literature could be great science fiction stories given the right author.

At the end of the day, all stories, regardless of genre, are about the story itself. Good elements of story construction (characters, plot, setting, grammar) are universal and will make or break a story, regardless of the science content.

Short stories are under 20,000 words according to our definition. We accept stories of any length below (or very close to) that threshold, including flash fiction

Payment and Rights

As we are still building and finding an audience, our current pay rates are below industry standard at $.01 per word, with a cap of $25 per piece. As we build an audience of subscribers and readers and advertisers, we will increase this amount. Every dollar spent on Oxygen Leaks goes back into improving the content of the magazine.

We prefer to buy First English language serial rights (as well as other rights, such as archiving, as defined in our contract), but will consider purchasing reprint rights for the right story at a lower pay rate. Mention the rights available in your cover letter.

Submission and Format

Oxygen Leaks uses a submission manager. We do not accept email or physical submissions. We allow simultaneous submission to other markets. We ask that if your story is picked up in another market that you let us know by replying to the email we send you when you submit.

Our submission form prompts you for your name, email address, title of the work you are submitting, and a cover letter. Your cover letter should contain the length of your story, your publishing history, the story’s publishing history if this is a reprint submission, and any relevant biographical information (if you are a physicist researching FTL travel and submit a story featuring FTL travel, mention that.)

Please double-check your email address before you submit. It is the only way we will be able to contact you. Your story will not be published if we cannot contact you.

All stories should be in standard manuscript format and in DOCX, DOC, RTF, or MD formats. When you submit you will receive an automated email that contains a unique submission number. You can use that submission number to check on the status of your submission, or to withdraw your submission if it is published elsewhere.

Taking Submissions: A Monster Told Me Bedtime Stories

Deadline: April 30th, 2020
Payment: Royalties
Theme: horror stories about bedtime, dreams, sleep, and nighttime in general!
Note: Reprints welcome

We’re looking for horror stories about bedtime, dreams, sleep, and nighttime in general! The parameters for this project are intentionally broad, and the possibilities are endless – monsters under the bed, horrors hiding in closets, things that go bump in the night, beings that lurk on the shore between dream and reality, nightmares that come true, scary (and original) bedtime stories, and whatever else you’re inspired to write!  (Please note: this anthology is not aimed at children, but we are open to stories appropriate for children.)

Deadline: April 30th or until filled. As payment, authors will receive royalties divided by word count.

These are general guidelines for ALL anthology submissions.

We’re looking for stories between 500-7500 words. A few words under or over won’t necessarily disqualify a story, but please keep as close to the guidelines as possible.

Stories MUST fit within the horror genre.

ANTHOLOGIES: At this time, we are primarily seeking short stories between 500 and 7500 words for themed anthologies. These submissions will be given priority.

You will be notified whether your submission is accepted or rejected. For anthology pieces, you will be notified no later than four weeks after the submission deadline. For all other pieces, you will be notified within 10 weeks of the date of your submission. If you have not received a response by that time, please email us.

Guidelines

First and foremost, all submissions must be horror.

However, we recognize that horror is a very broad and nuanced genre. To that end, we’ll read stories that fit into other genres (thriller, family drama, coming of age, science fiction, fantasy, comedy, romance, et cetera) as long as the story contains horror, and as long as horror is integral to the narrative.

ALL submissions MUST meet the following requirements (documents that do not meet these guidelines will be returned to authors for correction):

1. 12-point Times New Roman font ONLY (no other fonts, please)

2. Use “SMART QUOTES”

3. Submit all documents as an attachment in .doc, .docx, or .pages format

Submit via email to [email protected]

In the body of the email, include your name and contact information.

Unpublished stories are given preference, but we consider reprints on a case by case basis, as long as all rights have reverted to the author.

If your previously unpublished piece is accepted for publication in an anthology, we take First Print and Electronic Publishing Rights, with exclusivity for twelve months from the date of publication.

If we accept your reprint for publication in an anthology, we take nonexclusive reprint rights.

A copy of our publishing contract is available upon request.

Nobilis Erotica is the longest running and most prolific erotica podcast on the internet! It’s hard to be that awesome (and sexy) without a bit of help. Even Nobilis can only produce so much wonderful smut.

Which is where you come in. Nobilis is looking for your best, most delectable and utterly sexy speculative fiction erotica stories. We’re looking for robots that turn you on, dragons that might want to do things with the princess other than devour her, and what happens when the lights go out in every sense of the word (possibly with a tentacle or three). Take off the corsets and uniforms and have some fun. We welcome LGBTQ+ stories.

We’re looking for stories that are both good speculative fiction and good erotica – are you up for the challenge? If not sure, listen to the podcast to find out what we like – free of charge. Those who are looking for websites offering intimate adult experiences may visit 김포오피. Those who would like date mature women may explore the website of milf play; read reviews here.

Ongoing Submissions: We Will Remember Freedom

Payment: 1 cent per word
Note: Reprints welcome

We are looking for short fiction between 2,000 and 7,000 words in length. All stories must meet at least one of the following three criteria:

  • by an author who identifies as an anarchist or with another political tradition that opposes state authority, capitalism, and other oppressive hierarchies
  • takes place in a society without state authority, capitalism, or other oppressive hierarchies
  • involves struggle against state authority, capitalism, or other oppressive hierarchies

One of our goals is to publish fiction that offers imaginative answers to our world’s problems. One of our other goals is to publish fiction that is entertaining and well-written. We have no strong feelings about genre. We are open to fantasy, science fiction, horror, or stories with no speculative elements whatsoever. We are open to submissions from authors of all class backgrounds, religions, ethnicities, and genders, though we are particularly excited about work that explores the experiences of people whose identities are marginalized by this society. While we are aiming this podcast at a primarily anarchist audience, we are actively excited about publishing work from other political traditions that share an antiauthoritarian, pro-community worldview.

Payment

We pay $.01USD per word upon acceptance. This is not a professional rate, and we are therefore primarily a reprint market. While we will consider fiction that has not appeared elsewhere, we suggest that if your story is good enough for us, it is probably good enough for someone who will pay you at least 8 cents per word and we encourage you to try submitting to those markets first. Authors should be paid for their labor. Once your work is out of exclusivity, or if you can’t find a better-paying home for it, send it on to us!

How to Submit

Send your story in standard manuscript format, as either an .rtf or .docx attachment, to the editor at [email protected]. In the body of the email, please include a cover letter that indicates which of the three criteria your story meets as well as any prior publications of the story and/or where other work of yours has appeared.

Send only one story at a time. If you do not hear a response from us within six weeks, please consider your story rejected with our apologies.

What We Ask for

We ask for nonexclusive audio rights for the podcast, nonexclusive digital print rights to include the text on our website, and nonexclusive print rights to include your story in a potential forthcoming publication aimed at an incarcerated audience. If we accept your story, we would also like to interview you about the story, which we will air alongside your story.

What is This Anarchist Thing?

An anarchist is someone who opposes the state, capitalism, racism, colonialism, patriarchy, and all the various and intersecting ways by which groups of people exert power over other people. Anarchism also references a specific political tradition that dates to the mid-19th century and has had millions of adherents around the world. Or, to quote one of our favorite anarchist fiction writers, Ursula le Guin, “What is an anarchist? One who, choosing, accepts the responsibility of choice.”
