Please don’t submit your piece simultaneously to another publication.

What We Want

Firstly we recommend that you read some of the first issue of Alt Hist to get a flavour of what we publish, either the sample material or better yet go and buy yourself a copy.

Fiction

Fiction submitted:

1. Must be a short piece of fiction – under 10,000 words.
2. Must be either historical fiction, alternate history, or historical fantasy.
3. Must be a well written character based story rather than an exercise in ‘what if …’
4. Must not be simultaneously submitted to another publication.
5. Must be an original work that has not been published elsewhere.

Non-Fiction

Reviews and articles about historical fiction, alternate history books, genres and writers are welcome and criteria 2) and 3) above also apply.

Artwork

We would love to have your artwork to illustrate the magazine and website. In fact we need a nice image for the website asap, so if you have something you would like to contribute we’ll count you in for a share of the first two year’s profits as well!

Please let us know what rights you are granting us and be aware that the magazine will be published as an ebook and printed book.

How To Submit

Please submit using our online submission system provided by submishmash.

If you are having any problems submitting or want to ask a question contact us at:[email protected]

In the subject line please put: Fiction Submission, Non-Fiction Submission, Artwork Submission as applicable.

In the body of the email tell us a bit about yourself and any previous publishing credits.

If submitting text please use standard manuscript format.

How We Pay

Please note this has changed recently.

We currently offer a token payment of either $10 per accepted submission or a free copy of the print version of the issue in which your work features. You will also receive a free PDF copy of the issue.

We are looking for First English Language serial rights, which means that we have the right to publish it first before it appears anywhere else. Once published you could then publish the story elsewhere if you wish, such as an anthology for instance.

Introducing GRAVE MARKERS

gsp

We all know that every story has its own length, a set number of words needed to tell the story it needs to tell. Some are very clearly short stories — under 10,000 words — while others that require more (20,000 words or more) are novellas or novels. But what about those in-between stories, the stories that fall awkwardly between the 10,000 and 20,000 words.

Recently we’ve been receiving stories that fall into that category and we were at a loss as to what to do with them. Too long for an anthology, but not quite long enough to stand on its own as a short novel (novella), these novelettes often fall through the cracks and it’s a shame because often they are quite good but publishers just don’t know what to do with them. That’s why we decided to launch a new line: GRAVE MARKERS.

What’s a GRAVE MARKER and how will they differ? Those stories accepted to the GRAVE MARKER line will be published as stand-alone offerings in digital format only. Early the following year all of the GRAVE MARKERS published the previous year will be compiled into a print collection of novelettes. We expect the competition for this line to be fierce, as we will only be accepting 4 to 6 novelettes during the course of the year, so send us your very best.

Open Office or Libre Office users:  Due to an incompatibility issue, when an Open Office or Libre Office file is converted to a .doc file the last line of text disappears in our Submittable Document Viewer.  To prevent this from happening to your story, PLEASE add a blank line at the end of your story by hitting ‘Enter’ after the last line.  For good measure, add ‘END’ followed by a blank line.
  2. Please do not use Flash Fiction Online to fulfill school assignments.

Ongoing Submissions: Theme of Absence

ThemeofAbsence3

Payment: $3.00 for flash fiction or $5.00 for longer pieces

Theme of Absence publishes speculative flash fiction. All styles are welcome, including humor, as long as the story includes elements of horror, science fiction, or fantasy. Spine-tingling ghost stories are just as welcome as robots and spaceships. While we are primarily a flash fiction site, we will occasionally accept longer pieces.

The maximum word count is 1000 for flash fiction and 3000 for short stories. We’re a token paying market, offering $3.00 for stories under 1000 words and $5.00 for longer pieces.

The token pay can either by paid through Paypal or you can waive the payment and consider it a donation to the cost of the site. As a contributor, you’ll get an author bio at the end of your story and up to two links you’d like to share. I also offer interview posts to all of our published authors.

I won’t seek any rights, other than to archive the story here as long as the site is live. However, if your story is reprinted elsewhere at a later date, be nice and give us mention. All copyright is retained by the author.

I’m not currently accepting reprints, multiple, or simultaneous submissions. A story that has at any point been made publicly available in print or online (including personal blogs) is considered previously published and will not be accepted.

If you agree with these terms, please submit your story in the following way:

How to submit: Email the story to [email protected]. In the subject, list your story title and word count. Paste the story in the body of the email with no tabs or indents and a space between paragraphs. Include an author bio with up to two links you’d like to appear at the end of the story.

If you have any questions at all, feel free to email them to [email protected].

Fiction

AE welcomes submissions from both established and emerging authors. We publish exclusively science fiction, though our interpretation of the genre can be quite inclusive. We are interested in stories from 500 to 3000 words in length. We are not soliciting poetry or screenplays at this time.

Please include a brief cover letter and the full text of your story (preferably in plain text) in the body of an email addressed to [email protected]. We will not open any attachments.

The very first thing in your subject line should be “CDN Sub” if you are a Canadian citizen or current Canadian resident, otherwise your subject line should begin with “INT Sub.” This is very important, especially if you are Canadian. We publish a limited number of international stories. The subject line must also contain both the title and approximate word count of your piece, like this: “CDN Sub: ‘Title of Story’ (1300 words).” The cover letter should include your name, byline (if different) and a brief (50 words, at most) biography. We will contact you at the same email from which you sent your submission.

If you want still more advice on how to successfully package your submission, the information you are looking for can be found in this blog post.

Submissions must be previously unpublished (in print or online) and should be strong enough to stand alone (i.e., no excerpts from a larger work). Simultaneous submissions are accepted, but please notify us immediately if your submission is accepted for publication in another venue. Please submit no more than one story at a time. We buy First Serial and First Electronic rights and non-exclusive Audio rights.

Each author will receive $0.07 CAD per word, paid within 30 days of acceptance, for all stories we publish.

Non-Fiction

AE commissions a limited number of non-fiction pieces on subjects related to Canadian science fiction. We are particularly interested in author profiles for our AE Bookshelf series and book reviews, as well as longer-form interviews with Canadian authors. Non-fiction contributors do not have to be Canadian. If you are interested in writing non-fiction for AE, please query Helen Michaud at [email protected]. Include in your query a brief biography, list of non-fiction writing credits (including links or samples if available) and what kind of articles you propose to write (the more specific the better). Do not submit unsolicited non-fiction.

Payment for non-fiction is a flat fee depending on length and content. We pay $20 for all articles (including reviews and AE Bookshelf profiles) up to 3000 words. We pay $40 for interviews.

Comics

We are interested in receiving submissions of single or recurring comics by Canadian artists. AE buys first rights or reprint rights and pays a flat $20 per comic. Please send individual comics (or 3-5 sample comics in the case of a series) to [email protected] for consideration.

Art

We buy art primarily on contract for our specific needs. AE buys first rights and pays between $20 and $100 CAD per illustration depending upon size and intended use. Please send a portfolio of work to Art Director Erika Kiessner at [email protected] to be considered for future illustration contracts.

Licensing

All content in AE is licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution NonCommercial No Derivatives license upon publication. We believe strongly in the Creative Commons mission and feel that it benefits both authors and their readers by allowing creators to reach the widest possible audience.

Note that the use of the Creative Commons license has no effect on the ability or right of the author to sell reprint rights, film rights or other secondary rights in the future. Copyright remains at all times with the author.

Response Time

We aim to respond to all queries and submissions promptly. Please feel free to send a follow-up query if you have not heard from us within 90 days.

Ongoing Submissions: Gemini Magazine

Payment: $20 per published piece

Gemini Magazine is an independent literary journal established in 2009. We are open to creative work from writers and artists around the world, and have no rules. As jazz great Charlie “Bird” Parker put it, “There’s no boundary line to art.”

We don’t want to set any boundaries so we use a simple selection process: if it strikes a chord with us we print it.

Ongoing Submissions: Escape Pod Podcast

escape-pod

Payment: $0.06 per word for original fiction; $0.03 per word for reprints
Note: Obviously your horror here will require a large science fiction slant

Escape Pod publishes in both text and audio; you are offering both of those one-time and archival rights to us when you send us your story. Escape Pod is a science fiction market. Our mandate is fun. We are fairly flexible on what counts as “science” (as we’ll delve into superheroes or steampunk on occasion) and are interested in exploring the range of the genre, but we are not looking for fantasy, magical realism, or more than a tinge of horror. If your story isn’t centered on science, technology, future projections, alternate history, and how any or all of these things intersect with people, we’re probably not the right market for it.

Diversity: Escape Pod welcomes submissions from writers of all backgrounds. We are especially interested in seeing more submissions from people of backgrounds that have been historically underrepresented or excluded from traditional SF publishing, including, but not limited to, women, people of color, LGBTQ or non-binary gender people, persons with disabilities, members of religious minorities, and people from outside the United States. Our goal is to publish science fiction that reflects the diversity of the human race, so we strongly encourage submissions from these or any other underrepresented groups.

Wordcount: 2000-6000 words (firm)
We publish short-form fiction more or less exclusively. We are not interested in flash fiction, poetry, serialized fiction, or novel excerpts. As with other genres, we support their existence, but they’re not what we do.

Payment: $0.06 per word for original fiction; $0.03 per word for reprints
We are an SFWA qualifying market for original fiction and pay professional rates.

Format: Paste your story in plaintext into the body of an e-mail and send it to us with the subject line “Fiction Submission: [TITLE].” (This will help avoid overzealous spamcatchers.) Include a short note with your name, an address where you can be contacted/paid, the story’s title and wordcount, and (if it is a reprint) any venues where it has previously appeared.

Where to Send: submit AT escapepod DOT org
See you there!
