Ongoing Submissions: Fantasy & Science Fiction

Payment: 7-12 cents per word on acceptance.

  • We have no formula for fiction. We are looking for stories that will appeal to science fiction and fantasy readers. The SF element may be slight, but it should be present. We prefer character-oriented stories. We receive a lot of fantasy fiction, but never enough science fiction or humor. Do not query for fiction; send the entire manuscript. We publish fiction up to 25,000 words in length. Please read the magazine before submitting. A sample copy is available for $7.00 in the US and $15.00 elsewhere (to NJ address).
  • We do not accept simultaneous submissions. Please type your manuscript on clean white bond, double spaced, with one inch margins. For a good article on standard manuscript preparation, see www.sfwa.org/2008/11/manuscript-preparation/ . Put your name on each page, and enclose a self-addressed, stamped envelope. Writers from abroad are encouraged to send recyclable manuscripts with a letter-sized SASE and an International Reply Coupon or $1.10 in US postage. You can obtain information on how to place an international order by going to faq.usps.com and enter “postal store – International Orders” in the search box then the top entry in resulting list of links provides the necessary details.
  • We prefer not to see more than one submission from a writer at a time.
  • Allow 8 weeks for a response. Please write and enclose a self-addressed stamped envelope if you have any questions.
  • Payment is 7-12 cents per word on acceptance. We buy first North American and foreign serial rights and an option on anthology rights. All other rights are retained by the author.
  • Our columns and non-fiction articles are assigned in house. We do not accept freelance submissions in those areas.
  • Since we use so little art—just six covers a year, no interiors—we have no separate artist’s guidelines. Please send art samples to Gordon Van Gelder at the address below.
  • Send cartoon queries as well as orders for sample copies to Gordon Van Gelder, Fantasy & Science Fiction, P.O. Box 3447, Hoboken, NJ 07030.
  • Send story submissions to C.C. Finlay – Editor, The Magazine of Fantasy & Science Fiction, P.O. Box 8420, Surprise, AZ 85374. You can submit stories to him online at submissions.ccfinlay.com/fsf/

Ongoing Submissions: Inwood Indiana

Payment: $1.50 for everyone, and $10.00 for those marked “Editor’s Choice.”

Background

Inwood Indiana has been publishing issues since 2010. Each issue features both new and established writers. We consider publishing all forms of poetry, fiction, and non-fiction under 5000 words.

It’s still free to submit!

Many excellent journals charge fees for either online or offline submissions (or both). We all understand those funds are needed to send contributors a copy, or otherwise generate income. More than 70% of journals today do not pay anything. These types of practices are understandable, but frustrating to writers.

Fortunately, Inwood Indiana submissions are still free.

Publication Rewards

All journals have some financial strategy to stay afloat, and those decisions are often difficult trade-offs.
What are our trade-offs?

Pros:

  • We don’t require writers to pay anything to submit.
  • We are in the minority of journals that DO pay cash (via PayPal because it’s easy and convenient).
  • Along with publication, writers also receive a 1 Year Subscription to Inwood Indiana online ($20 Value).Cons:
  • We cannot afford to send free paperback copies.
  • Token payments are small.

    Submission Guidelines

By submitting, you are acknowledging these terms.

    1. Your work has not been previously printed elsewhere. You maintain all future-use rights to your work.

    2. You affirm your submission is your own creation and no part of your submission is in the public domain.

    3. You may submit up to 5 times each issue.

    4. You may withdraw any “pending” submission prior to acceptance by logging into the submission manager (just click “withdraw”). Once accepted, you will need to contact us to withdraw a submission.

    Note:

  • We do not charge you to submit your work.
  • We do not charge a reading fee for general submissions.
  • We prefer you limit your submissions to 5 per issue.
  • Remember to separate your submissions.
  • Simultaneous submissions are fine.
  • One token payment allowed per issue.
  • Token payments are currently $1.50 for everyone, and $10.00 for those marked “Editor’s Choice.”
  • Online subscriptions are disbursed after publication.
  • Cash payments are paid by PayPal to any address you designate.Special consideration is given to works with these themes:* Inwood Indiana
    * Small Towns
    * Eerie / Spooky
    * Nature

We prefer submissions using our submission manager. However, we still accept submissions by mail.

To submit by mail, follow these directions:
    * Include up to 5 submissions on separate sheets without contact info.
    * Submissions spanning multiple pages should be collated and stapled together.
    * Include your contact info on a cover page with your bio.
    * Include a SASE for notices – or your email address.
    * Submissions will not be returned without sufficient postage.

Ongoing Submissions: The Arcanist

Payment: $50
Theme: Fantasy and sci-fi flash fiction

Welcome to The Arcanist! We’re a digital literary magazine that focuses on fantasy and sci-fi flash fiction.

We strongly believe that fantasy and sci-fi are two of the most important genres in the literary world, helping us escape to distant lands, reflect on our shared humanity, and gaze into the future. We want to provide readers snippets of the genres they love and we want to give writers of these genres a paid place to publish their work. (That’s right, we pay you.)

We are open to submissions year-round and publish on a weekly basis (every Friday at 9 AM). You can read our work here  or through our digital subscription, which you can sign up for by clicking subscribe in the top right corner!

Thinking of submitting!

Here’s What We’re Looking For:

We specialize in flash-fiction so we want stories that are 1,000 words or less. We know this is a tough task given the lengthy, world-building heavy nature of the genres, but we believe in you!

Sadly, if you exceed the word count we will not consider your work.

We are open to simultaneous submissions and multiple submissions. Please do not send more than three stories to us at a time, though. As soon as a story is accepted or rejected, feel free to send us another.

Stories should be actual stories. They need to have a beginning, a middle, and an end. We do not publish poetry, non-fiction essays or anything that isn’t a proper flash fiction story. Make sure something happens.

Here’s a breakdown of what we want:

  • 1,000 words or less
  • A complete, well-crafted story
  • Original work
  • Great characters that we feel something about (love, hate, love to hate, something!)
  • Sci-fi and fantasy based only! (this includes horror and other sub-genres of SF/F)

We love humorous works, horrifying works, timely works, and are generally pretty open-minded when it comes to stories. That being said:

The Hard Sells and What We Don’t Want

While we are open to many different ideas, story structures, and tones, we do have some hard sells, too.

  • Meta stories (stories about writing a story, etc.)
  • Stories with passive characters
  • Excessive gore (don’t be gross just to be gross. Gore is fine if there’s a reason)
  • Excessive adult content (Character has a sex scene? Fine. But, again, there better be a reason why you’re dwelling on it)
  • No fanfiction (There are other places for this sort of thing)
  • Extremely vulgar works (Keep your potty mouths in check)
  • Hate speech, racism, and other offensive material (‘nuff said)
  • No poetry

Rights, Rights, Rights

When we accept a story from you we retain the right to publish the piece online and elsewhere under The Arcanist name.

We do not retain these exclusively. If you want to publish your story somewhere else after we publish it, more power to you. We’re not in the business of kidnapping a writer’s work. We’re writers, too, and we’d hate to have that happen to us.

Payment!

We pay a flat $50 USD rate for stories. We use PayPal to process all of our payments.

Writers are always paid before their story goes live.

Okay, How Do I Submit?

We use a Google Form to process our submissions where you can upload your story after filling out a few questions.

Here’s that link again: Submit here.

If you can’t manage the Google Form, you can submit to us via email, which is listed on the form.

You will also get a receipt when submitting to the form.

Unfortunately, The Arcanist no longer accepts work submitted via email, unless authors have been otherwise instructed by one or more of the editors.

Speaking of which:

How Long Until I Hear Back?

We typically respond to submissions within 1–2 months, depending on the volume we have at the time. If it’s been quite a while and you haven’t heard back, feel free to give us a gentle nudge and we will make sure everything’s running smoothly.

Please refrain from emailing us a day after you submit asking why you haven’t heard back. We know that waiting to hear back can be an anxious process, but we’re working as fast as we can. When we have to double check on the status of a submission and write responses, it makes everything take longer. If you didn’t get an email bounce back or a form error, trust that it’s with us. If we have a problem accessing your story, we will reach out — we promise.

Everything You Need to Know

Here’s a wrap up of everything you need to know when submitting to us:

  • SF/F stories only
  • 1,000 words or less (seriously, it’s like the first thing we check)
  • Original works, please
  • Actual stories. No poems, flowery descriptions or essays. Real, honest stories that have characters, an arc, etc.
  • Read our hard sells
  • We pay $50 USD for stories we accept
  • We retain the right to publish your story online and elsewhere under The Arcanist name. We do not exclusively retain these. You are free to resell.
  • You can submit using this form.
  • It can take 1–2 months to hear back. Be patient. We do not use slush readers!

Thanks for your interest! We look forward to reading your work!

Ongoing Submissions: Mirror Dance

Payment: $5.00
Note: Reprints Allowed
Note: Check the main page for the current theme which rotates

What We Publish
Mirror Dance is a quarterly online magazine of fantasy fiction and poetry. We are open to all sub-genres of fantasy, including magic realism, urban or contemporary fantasy, sword and sorcery, fantasy-of-manners, and stories with mythological or folkloric themes. As a member of the Outer Alliance, we actively seek fiction with LGBTQA themes and characters who challenge traditional concepts of gender, as well as stories from diverse ethnic, religious, and social perspectives.

We are open dark fantasy, science fantasy, and historical fiction with fantasy elements. We do not publish science fiction or non-supernatural horror.

Fiction of any length will be considered, though we generally find stories under 6,000 words more suitable for online reading. We value unique voices and beautiful but readable prose styles. We prefer stories with dynamic, fully-developed characters and richly detailed settings over stories driven by a particular twist or plot device.

Poetry of all lengths will be considered, from haiku to epic narratives. We value strong imagery, precise word choice and a tight, specific focus. Poems must have an identifiable fantasy or mythic element. Please do not send more than three (3) poems in one submission.

Mirror Dance pays $5.00 upon acceptance for each work of fiction or poetry. We can make payments through PayPal, check, or an online donation to the project or charity of your choice.

How to Submit
Please send your work in a .doc, .docx, or .rtf document, or pasted in the body of an e-mail, to mirrordancefantasy at gmail dot com. In your cover e-mail, include your name and contact information, the title of your submission, and its word count.

Please use the subject line “Mirror Dance Fiction Submission – [Title].” Replace [title] with the title of your submission, and change “fiction” to “flash fiction,” “poetry,” etc. as appropriate. For all other communications, include “Mirror Dance” in your subject line.

Skull detail from the Crystal Globe (Waterhouse)

Other Considerations
No simultaneous submissions. Please do not send us work that is currently under consideration elsewhere. If your story becomes unavailable after you’ve submitted it to Mirror Dance, please notify us immediately.

Please respect language. Atrocious spelling, grammar, and punctuation in your e-mail or your submission itself are grounds for a rejection. A few small typos are acceptable; carelessness is not.

We are happy to consider reprints. Please include previous publication details in your e-mail. We have a slight preference for stories that aren’t currently available in a free-to-read online venue, such as your blog, another e-zine, or a critique site that is not password-protected.

In the case of original fiction, we are asking for first English-language digital rights exclusive for three months. All work published in Mirror Dance will be archived unless the author requests otherwise. The author may request that the work be immediately removed from the website at any time after the first three months of the story’s publication.

Mirror Dance aims to respond to all submissions within two months. If you are concerned about the length of a response time, please feel free to query the editor at the e-mail address above.

Thank you for your interest in Mirror Dance! I look forward to reading your submission.

Ongoing Submissions: Liquid Imagination

Payment: $8, $10 if by PayPal
Theme: Stories where reality and fantasies blur

All stories and poems must be submitted using Submittable (click on the appropriate link at the bottom of this page).

Our next issue will be published on February 1, 2021. Submissions for poems and stories are now open.

We no longer accept reprints for stories or poems.

Give us INTENSITY with high EMOTION in your writing and bring AWE to readers.

Give us something unexpected and well written.  Technique, voice, characterization, and language will all play a part in our decision to publish.  Amaze us with your writing, use of language, sense of story, and memorable characters.  Give us a story readers will not be able to forget and will eagerly recommend to others.

If you want us to take your work seriously, please edit and proofread carefully prior to submission.  Manuscripts with significant typographical, spelling, or grammatical errors—where we feel compelled to grab a red pen after reading the first couple of pages—will likely be declined without being read further.

Our editorial policies respect the artistic license of our authors.  However, there are occasions when changes are needed that go beyond basic spelling, grammar, and punctuation corrections. In any case, the author will always be given final approval, prior to publication, over substantial edits made by our staff. We appreciate your willingness to work with us in this regard.

Format and Deadlines

All submissions should…

  • Have 1 inch margins, single spaced lines, with extra space between paragraphs (and no indents)
  • Do not use fancy headers or footers, text effects, background colors or images.
  • Use a standard font (Arial, Calibri, Times Roman, Courier) in 10, 11 or 12 point size.
  • PDF files are not allowed owing to the difficulties in reviewing and suggesting edits for them. Be assured that all work submitted to LI is protected and no changes are made without consulting with the author.
  • Include your first and last name, and your email address on the first page of your submission.

Liquid Imagination comes out three times a year, on the 1st of the following months:

  • February
  • June
  • October

Submissions for upcoming issues cut off roughly six to eight weeks before the publication date. Due to the high number of submissions we receive, please wait until after four months to inquire on status ([email protected]) if you have not received a response from us.

Rights and Royalties

Liquid Imagination pays a flat fee of $8 for short stories (1001 words up to 6000 words) and poems, and $3 for flash stories (up to 1000 words). A $2 bonus will be added for authors who accept payment via Paypal (which shall be the assumed payment method unless you specifically state otherwise). Note: Only authors in the United States have the option of receiving a mailed echeck. Everyone else MUST use PayPal or forfeit payment.

In exchange, we require:

For previously unpublished WORK

The AUTHOR grants First World Rights to the PUBLISHER.

The AUTHOR grants Anthology Rights to the PUBLISHER.

Other important Points

  • Pieces posted for critique on a controlled-access website (user ID and password required to access) are not considered “published.”

Ongoing Submissions: Dreams & Nightmares

Payment: Payment in US is $12 on acceptance + 2 contributor’s copies, outside of US is 3-issue subscription plus 2 copies.

I print primarily poetry, but also publish a small amount of short short fiction. The genres of fantasy and SF are preferred. I am interested in experimental formats and content, and prefer fantastic horror a la Lovecraft or Blackwood to the blood and gore type. Any SF or fantasy is appropriate if it isn’t sappy or trite. If your poem rhymes, be sure that the rhymes are not forced, and that the meter is consistent.

Ongoing Submissions: Not One Of Us

Payment: ¼¢ per word ($5 minimum) and a contributor’s copy. For poems, $5 and a contributor’s copy

Not One of Us is about people (or things) out of place in their surroundings, outsiders, social misfits, aliens in the SF sense—anyone excluded from society for whatever the reason. We’d like Not One of Us to consider the problem of “otherness” from every possible fictional angle: horror, SF, fantasy, noir, slipstream, Western, mainstream, whatever.
