Payment: All authors receive a complimentary print and pdf copy of the issue their story appears in. Our payment is 6 euro per 1000 words (i.e. 0.6 cents per word), up to 8000 words

We are always looking for thoughtful, well written fiction. Our definition of what constitutes science fiction, horror and fantasy is extremely broad and we love to see material which pushes at the boundaries or crosses between genres.

All authors receive a complimentary print and pdf copy of the issue their story appears in. Our payment is 6 euro per 1000 words (i.e. 0.6 cents per word), up to 8000 words. We hope to improve our rates gradually in the future, and purchasing the magazine is the way to help us achieve that!

Our preferred length is between 2,500 and 8,000 words. We have published stories above that limit, but only because we thought that they were of exceptional quality. Please also note that we cannot (regretfully) pay for additional words beyond 8000.

Our response time is variable – but we aim to respond between two to four months after submission date.

We do not accept simultaneous or multiple submissions, nor do we accept previously published stories, the exception being stories that have been published previously in languages other than English (i.e. you may submit stories that have not yet been published in English, but the stories must be translated to English for submission).

We do not count stories that have been posted online in fiction workshops for critique and improvement as having been previously published (i.e. these may also be submitted, but must be removed from the workshop if accepted for publication).

All stories submitted will be considered for publication in either Albedo One magazine, OR in the online Albedo 2.0 Fiction Showcase series, which aims to publish and showcase online the very best fiction that the Albedo One team can lay their hands on.

For postal submissions: All stories should be typewritten, on A4 paper or US equivalent, double line or 1.5 line spaced, using one side of the paper and leaving at least 1″ margins all round. Electronic version should be available on request.

We do NOT return manuscripts, so disposable manuscripts ONLY please!

Our postal submissions address:

Albedo One
2 Post Road
Lusk
Co. Dublin
Ireland

All submissions must be accompanied by an e-mail address, our preferred method of response, or a SAE with Irish stamps. NO English stamps, NO American stamps please – the Irish Post Office does NOT accept these. International Reply Coupons (IRCs) are unfortunately also not accepted by the Irish Post Office.

For email submissions: Mail your e-mail submission to: [email protected].

Email submissions may be pasted into the body of your email, or may be submitted as an attachment in .rtf format (no .docx please).

Please enter subject line as follows: Fiction Submission: Name of Story

We strongly suggest that potential contributors be familiar with the style and content of Albedo One before submitting, and we advise ordering a copy or minimally reading a low-cost pdf copy before submitting stories.

Story rights: Upon acceptance of a story for publication in Albedo One magazine or the Albedo 2.0 Fiction Showcase, we claim First World English Rights for Online and Print mediums. This lets us be the ones to publish your story first, worldwide in the English language, either in the pages of Albedo One, or online on the Albedo 2.0 Fiction Showcase. As soon as we have published your story, be it in Albedo One magazine or Albedo 2.0, rights revert to the authors. Albedo One NEVER claims any permanent rights to your work.

You might also wish to consider entering our respected horror, fantasy and science fiction writing competition, the International Aeon Award Short Fiction Contest, with a grand prize of €1000 euro (yes, that’s right, €1000!) and publication in Albedo One.

We are also looking for interviews with high profile authors, media personalities and for book reviews.

Albedo One – Guidelines to Artists

Please submit a sample of your work. We currently require cover artwork only. Artwork may be commissioned on the basis of your initial sample submission. We pay €20 for artwork, on publication.

Art Submissions

If you wish to have your art considered for Ares, please send an inquiry, along with a link to an online gallery (if possible). Please include the artwork’s name and its pixel definition in your email.

We generally only purchase pre-existing pieces of art. We will contact you if we wish to commission original art.

We pay $300 or more for quality cover art (full-page) and up to $30 per page for interior art. Smaller pieces pay proportionally.

Fiction Submissions

NOTE: We are not currently accepting new fiction submissions. Please check back here and/or keep an eye on our Duotrope listing for our next open reading/submissions period.

What We’re Looking For

When Ares is open to fiction submissions, we are looking for stories in the genres listed above.

What We’re NOT Looking For

Ares is not a market for fiction based upon the copyright-protected works of others. We will review fiction based upon the work of others, provided that the work is no longer copyrighted.

Ares is not seeking poetry or erotica. Real life includes poetic and erotic elements, so your story can as well, if it supports the plot.

Reprints, Simultaneous Submissions, and Multiple Submissions

We do accept reprint submissions. Please note, however, we are only interested in considering stories for reprint that are not available online or in any currently-purchasable form.

We don’t accept simultaneous submissions. Please do not submit works that are under consideration elsewhere.

We don’t accept multiple submissions. Please wait for a resolution of one submission before making the next.

Fiction Length

  • Minimum: 1,000 words
  • Maximum: 10,000 words
  • Preferred: 4,000 to 6,000 words

Fiction Rates

Our standard rate for the first digital and print publishing rights is $0.06 per word for original fiction.

Our standard rate for reprints is $0.02 per word.

Game Submissions

We publish a unique game in every issue of Ares. Like everything else, game submissions should align with the genre list above.

For game submissions, include the game’s name, a one sentence description, and a required component list in the body of your email.

For game expansions, modifications, and scenarios, include the name of the base game and a brief description of the submission in the body of your email.

Game design inquiries should be directed to [email protected]

Game Designs

Each game submission is evaluated individually for completeness, quality, and designer’s pedigree. Contract prices typically range from $1,000 to $2,000 based primarily upon these considerations.

We expect game designs to be complete, developed, and playtested before submission.

As for content, we expect to allocate one letter-size sheet of die-cut playing pieces, one 17” x 22” map, and eight to sixteen pages for rules. There is some flexibility here – ask us if you have a design with somewhat different requirements.

Game Expansion, Modification, and Scenario Submissions

Ares includes a limited amount of game scenario material for use with previously published games. One Small Step Games must possess the rights to publish this material. If these can’t be easily acquired, we will have to reject the submission.

Nonfiction Submissions

Non-fiction should be related to any of our preferred genres, with a preference for pieces that focus on the future and its implications.

We do not take reprint submissions for non-fiction.

Please send non-fiction submissions as an attachment to [email protected].

Non-fiction Length

1,500 to 6,000 words

Non-fiction Rates

Our standard rate for the first digital and print publishing rights is $0.06 per word for original non-fiction.

If you include professional-quality diagrams and art, we will pay an additional $1 per published square inch (about 6.25 square cm) for any that we use.

Ongoing Submissions: The Dark Magazine

the-dark

Payment: 3 cents/word for original fiction on publication; 1 cent/word for reprints

Submission Procedures

All submissions should follow proper manuscript format. Submissions should be emailed to [email protected] Please attach all submissions in .doc or rtf format—we will not accept submissions embedded in the body of email. Include your bio in your cover letter.

Guidelines for Fiction

The Dark is an online magazine published monthly. We are seeking fiction 2,000 – 6,000 words.

What we publish:

• Horror

• Dark Fantasy

Don’t be afraid to experiment or to deviate from the ordinary; be different—try us with fiction that may fall out of “regular” categories. However, it is also important to understand that despite the name, The Dark is not a market for graphic, violent horror.

We will not consider multiple submissions. Submit once and wait for a response before sending anything else. We will not consider simultaneous submissions.

Reprints

Please submit your story with the word REPRINT in the header of your submission emails, like so: SUBMISSION: [STORY TITLE] (REPRINT). Only stories from established print markets, including short story collections and anthologies, from the past two years, which would cover January 2014 onwards, will be considered.

Payment

We pay 3 cents/word for original fiction up to 6,000 words on acceptance for first world rights; and 1 cent/word for reprint fiction up to 6,000 words on acceptance for nonexclusive reprint rights.

Response Times

Response times will vary depending on volume, but may average two days. Query after one month (include title and date submitted). Please do not respond to rejection letters, for any reason, otherwise.

Artwork

Submit an inquiry along with samples (preferably a link to an online gallery). We purchase pre-existing pieces of art and rarely commission original art for covers.

No Longer Ongoing Submissions: Aurealis Magazine

Aurealis is still an active magazine, however, they no longer meet our definition for an ongoing market and we will post their open calls as they become available.

Payment: Aurealis pays between $20 and $60 per 1000 words, depending on the level of government grants received, and payment will be made soon after the publication of the issue containing your story. Minimum payment is $20. You will also receive a free electronic copy of the issue containing your story.

Please note: due to a large number of submissions, Aurealis will be closing to short story submissions from 1 October 2016 and will be opening again on 1 February 2017.

In 2017 Aurealis will be open to submissions during two reading periods:

1 February—31 May and 1 August—31 October

Subscribers are fast-tracked through the assessment process.

Fiction guidelines

Aurealis is looking for science fiction, fantasy or horror short stories between 2000 and 8000 words. All types of science fiction, fantasy and horror that are of a “speculative” nature will be considered, but we do not want stories that are derivative in nature, particularly those based on TV series. We do not publish horror without a supernatural element.

Although we are an Australian-based publication, we are open to submissions in English from anywhere in the multiverse.

Stories containing an unacceptable number of spelling mistakes and typos, and those that do not conform to our guidelines in other ways, will be rejected automatically. This may seem harsh, but we are being honest about it. Please take the time to polish your work in every way before you send it to us.

Aurealis pays between A$20 and A$60 per 1000 words, but assume the lower rate for unsolicited submissions.  Payment is made soon after the publication of the issue containing your story. Minimum payment is A$20. You will also receive a free electronic copy of the issue containing your story.

We buy First Electronic Publication Rights and the non-exclusive rights to include the story in a print and digital anthology. All other rights remain with the contributor. The story must not be published elsewhere for a period of twelve months after it appears in electronic form in Aurealis.

Aurealis does not publish reprints. We don’t publish poetry or novel extracts. We don’t serialise longer works.

Our response time for subscribers is no more than two months and can be up to twice as long for non-subscribers, but we are always aiming for much shorter turnarounds.  If you are a subscriber, please do not query us until two months have passed since your submission.  If you are a non-subscriber, please wait four months.  Where time permits, unsuccessful authors will be emailed a reply in the form of a checklist critique and/or a personal note. We are sorry, but Aurealis is not able to respond to queries about rejected stories.

Email submission example

Here is how the start of your fiction submission should look:

Aurealis submission format

  • Please only submit one story at a time. We do not accept simultaneous submissions.
  • Save your story file as the title of the story. Do not include your name in the file name.
  • Stories must be unpublished and if accepted must remain unpublished until they appear in Aurealis. Stories should not be published (made publically available) on personal websites, public writer’s forums, small press publications, POD books/collections, self published collections etc. We are not interested in seeing stories that have been previously rejected by the magazine.
  • All stories are judged on merit through a blind reading process. All identifying information is removed prior to sending it to our readers. Hence, we do not want identifying information in headers and footers
  • Subscriber submissions will be fast-tracked through the assessment process. If you are a subscriber, please indicate this clearly in the subject line: “Aurealis submission: <“Title of story”> <(word count)> by <Author name> (SUBSCRIBER)” and on the first page of your manuscript.
  • All manuscripts should be double-spaced with broad margins and numbered pages.
  • Use 12 pt Times font, or a similar serif font, such as Cambria, Palatino, Baskerville. No other fonts, please. Italise words and passages that you want italicised. DO NOT underline words or passages you want italicised
  • If you have note heard from us after two months, please check your spam filters before querying us.

Please direct all fiction submission queries to: [email protected]

Non-fiction submission guidelines

We are interested in articles between 500 and 2000 words of interest to readers and writers of science fiction, fantasy and horror. These include humorous pieces, serious articles and interviews. We prefer non-fiction where some visuals are included. Non-fiction must be previously unpublished and remain unpublished for 12 months after publication in Aurealis. Our payment is A$20 per 1000 words. Send all non-fiction articles and queries to [email protected].

Art guidelines

Aurealis is looking for strong, vibrant colour cover art that draws attention to the magazine.

Please forward details of the website where your work can be viewed.

Aurealis buys the rights to use the cover on an issue of the magazine as well as for subsequent promotional purposes including on our website. We acknowledge the artist in the issue in which the work appears.

Internal artwork is commissioned, but we will consider samples of your black and white work.

Artwork and artwork enquiries can be emailed to: [email protected]. We will only respond if we are interested and our response may be considerable time after the query, depending on the backlog of covers on hand.

Our payment is A$75 for cover art, A$25 for black and white story illustrations, and A$10-15 for graphics. Payment is made soon after the publication of the issue with your work.

While the utmost care is taken, Aurealis cannot accept responsibility for the loss or damage of any hard copy manuscripts or artwork.

Review book guidelines

Aurealis reviews novels, anthologies, collections and non-fiction of interest to readers of  science fiction, fantasy and horror. Please send queries to [email protected]. Do not send digital files unless requested to do so. Due to the volume of requests, we only respond if we are interested in seeing the book. A book request from us is no guarantee it will be reviewed.  Please do not send follow-up queries.

If you would like to write reviews for Aurealis, please send an expression of interest to the Reviews Editor at [email protected]. If there is an opening, the Reviews Editor will get back to you with information about how to apply.

Contributors’ Guidelines

It is strongly recommended that you study the magazine before submitting. Being familiar with what we publish will obviously greatly improve your chances of acceptance.

Non-Fiction

We are not currently open to unsolicited submissions of non-fiction, although suggestions of what we should be covering are always welcome. The best place to make such suggestions is the forum.

Artwork

We are always happy to hear from artists wanting to illustrate stories and/or supply cover art. Send us a portfolio through the post that we can keep on file, or use this website’s contact form to point us to your website or gallery.

Short Stories

We are always open to submissions of new science fiction and fantasy short stories of up to a maximum of 10,000 words.

Your story should be in standard MS format (double spaced, good margins, contact details, approximate word count and page numbers).

There’s no need to spend too long on a covering letter, just introduce yourself and tell us of any relevant credits you have.

Never send simultaneous submissions, multiple submissions or reprints.

Please have only one story (per magazine) under consideration at any one time.

Don’t be offended by a form rejection. It simply means that we’re really busy, with lots of stories to read. But even a form rejection means what it says: send the rejected story somewhere else and try us with something new…and keep on trying!

Don’t submit a rejected story to another of our magazines, as we will already have considered that option.

You can submit your story using our online system:
