Submission Instructions

Requirements

Stand-alone pieces or articles for existing columns may be submitted as:

  • Pitches – a few paragraphs outlining the theme of the piece and direction you would take.
  • Drafts – a near complete article.
  • Finished works.

Proposals for new recurring columns should include:

  • A pitch that outlines the overall theme and at least four possible topics.
  • A list of potential contributors. Columns that feature multiple contributors, even if only one at a time, will be favored.

All submissions must include the author’s full name, address, and a short bio outlining their experience with the topic.

Process

Submissions should be sent via email to [email protected]. Please title your message“SUBMISSION: Name of Submission/Column – Author Name.”

Allow up to two weeks for a response. In most cases, we will use form letters. After two weeks, you may query at the above address.

Contracts will be issued for completed articles. Payment will be issued on receipt of a completed and signed contract.

Deadlines

The Bulletin is published four times per year. Unsolicited time-sensitive articles must be delivered three months in advance of that issue. For example, the deadline for the Nebula issue (May) is February 1st. Pitches for these articles should be made as far in advance as possible, but no later than four months in advance. Exceptions will be granted on a case-by-case basis for articles that require information that may not be readily available by our deadline (like award nominees). Permission for these exceptions must be granted in advance.

FAQ

  1. Do I have to be a SFWA member to submit?
    No.
  2. I have an idea for a column, but I don’t know anyone else who could write about it. Would you help me find other contributors?
Yes. Even if you don’t ask, we might suggest other contributors further down the line.
  3. I have an idea, but it overlaps with an existing column that isn’t listed as open to submissions. Should I submit it?
Yes, but please keep in mind that the columnists may have this proposal already in mind. If it is particularly interesting, we might suggest a different direction that would allow you to write about it for us.
  4. Are serials or multi-part articles allowed?
If you have something that can’t be explained in the 3000 words or less, then let’s talk about it. If the concept is something that we find exciting, we can certainly consider serializing your article in multiple parts.

Ongoing Submissions: Aurora Wolf

Deadline: $5 for emag and contributor’s copy if included in an anthology

WHAT WE ARE LOOKING FOR:

Aurora Wolf publishes stories where dreams and memories are created for the reader’s enjoyment. Our online free library and low priced print and e-formatted anthologies feature speculative fiction with strong characters and morals that uplift the soul, encourage positive thought and bring hope into our world.

In other words; the MC wins out over the forces of darkness. We want stories that will make your grandchildren proud. Entertaining works that ring with harmony, but surprise with unexpected twists to plot, rising action and a conflict that will keep a reader riveted to your story page. The story must end well.

Science Fiction: Space, Alternate Reality, Steam Punk, Nature, Post Apocalyptic(uplifting). Especially Seeking: Near Earth Space Exploration and Under Sea Exploration adventures.

Fantasy: Sword and Sorcery, Heroic, High Fantasy, Dragon and Fairy Tales.

We are not seeking stories centered about current religious controversy or politics. But we will accept spiritually uplifting works that can bring happiness to others.

No Horror, doom and gloom, extreme gore or violence. If the story ends with a tragic ending, such as Romeo and Juliet, I will probably Pass on your work.

Romance is okay if the story holds elements of Sci-fi or fantasy.

No erotica, excessive foul language, or stories of abuse. Any such stories will be deleted without reply. But then . . . maybe I will reply.

We publish stories from all English speaking nations using their own spelling and voice.

This is a family publication; we like stories for all ages. We do not want stories that are stronger than a PG rating. We want uplifting stories that inspire righteous thought and morals. Most of all we want stories that are original, packed with action, characters that show growth and endings that grab the reader.

Family oriented stories, parent with their child or sibling “stories” that show bonding and the emotions of an enduring relationship between two characters are looked upon with favor.

A good way to improve your chances of being accepted at Aurora Wolf is to make sure your story fits the guidelines in regards to the subject of the story and how well the story ends.

READING PERIOD:

Open year-round.

WORD COUNT:

2500 – 5,000   On the rarest of occasions, if a story can knock our socks off, we will consider outstanding works that fall outside of this range. Perhaps 2000 – 6500 words

Although we have great respect for flash and poetry; we are not accepting Flash Fiction or Poetry at this time.

For poetry I would suggest John C. Mannone of The Silver Blade magazine http://silverblade.silverpen.org/content/?tag=john-c-mannone

STORY SUBMISSION:

If you do not hear from us, after you submit your work, within a couple of days, please inquire. If we respond that your work is received and you have not heard back from us, within thirty days, with a Pass or Acceptance, please inquire. We work really hard to keep submission periods as short as possible. We have had computer gliches in the past, stuff happens, so don’t feel shy about contacting us.

It is very important that you use the Story Submission before your Title of the subject line. This allows us to help filter out the stories from the massive amount of promotional spam advertisements that pour in everyday.

Times New Roman, 12 pt. Font.

No underlines; use italics for italics.

Single space between paragraphs.

Submit as a .doc or .rtf  attachment.

Use the show and hide tool to check for and remove manually installed tabs and spacing.  Use the paragraph format features to create a clean manuscript. Fancy style formats are not wanted, use normal style. They can be a nightmare when formatting a book for print or e-format.

Do not type or paste the story into the body of your e-mail, attach it please. We are not accepting submissions via snail mail.

Submissions not following these formats may be deleted without reply. There’s no guarantee that the story will be received. We try to acknowledged all stories within twenty-four hours, if you have not been contacted after forty-eight hours, please inquire.

Include contact information in both the body of the e-mail and at the top of your story. Very important if your original e-mail gets lost. You may also include a bio of 100 words or fewer with a link to your website if you wish. This will be attached after the ending of your story online. Ongoing Submissions: GigaNotoSaurus

gigantosaurus

Payment: $100 per story

GigaNotoSaurus accepts Science Fiction or Fantasy (or any combination thereof) from five thousand to twenty-five thousand words. We could wax eloquent describing the kinds of stories we like, but it wouldn’t be useful; there are dozens of things we don’t know we like until we try them.  Send us that story you really, really believe in–the one, maybe, that quickly ran out of places to submit it to because it’s so long.

We do want a variety of settings, styles, viewpoints, and backgrounds.  This includes but is not limited to cultural backgrounds, sexual orientations, and genders.

GigaNotoSaurus publishes one story a month. We pay $100 per story on acceptance. We ask for first serial rights and non-exclusive, indefinite archival rights, though the author is welcome at any time to request a story be removed from the archive.

We do not accept simultaneous submissions (stories sent to more than one market at a time), nor do we accept multiple submissions–only send us one story at a time.  We do not accept reprints.  Your story must be previously unpublished.

To submit, please email your story to [email protected] as an attachment. Please use Standard Manuscript Format, and make the attachment an RTF file. The subject line of your email should read “Submission: [Title]” where [Title] is the title of your story. You should receive a reply within thirty days.* Please do not query before thirty days has passed.

If you wish to include a cover note, the only information we require is your name, the title and length of your story, and your three best publication credits if you have any. (If you don’t, don’t worry about it. Just leave that line off.) Do not include a bio–if we buy your story, we will ask for biographical information. Do not include a summary or description of your story–your work will stand or fall on its own.

*Editor’s Note: As of March 2015, expect a longer response time for novellas (seventeen thousand words and up) — please allow forty-five to sixty days for a reply. Queries for novellas are appreciated after sixty days.

Ongoing Submissions: Cosmic Roots and Eldritch Shores

Payment: 6¢ per word for new fiction, and 2¢ per word for reprints and fact-based work.
Reprints Allowed

Writers Guidelines

We accept new work as well as reprints, anywhere from 1000 word flash fiction on up, but as we are just starting, shorter pieces will be favored. We have tough standards but only care about the quality of the writing, characters, plot, and ideas, not whether you’re new or established.  Only submit finished work you are proud of.  Commensurate with the time available, if we don’t accept your submission we’ll explain why.

We are following the Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers of America (SFWA) guidelines; after one year of meeting their criteria they will retroactively qualify us as a pro site and new work printed during that year will count towards a writer’s SWFA qualifications.  We pay 6¢ per word for new fiction, and 2¢ per word for reprints and fact-based work.

Fiction

We are looking for well written original stories in science fiction, fantasy, myth, legend, fairy tales, and eldritch, in written, podcast, video, and/or graphic story form, and from around the world.  We’re accept both serious and humorous work. We like science fiction in all its states of matter, from solid to gaseous to plasma, i.e., from hard as steel to as insubstantial as interstellar space.  If you use real existing science, please get it right.

We’re not looking for angsty romance, fanfics*, horror, hate, blood & guts, excessive violence, sex, axe-grinding, or stories that leave readers feeling they’ve had the energy and joy sucked out of them.

Fact

We are looking for fact-based articles, interesting information, reviews, and humor in any discipline that relates to the type of stories we publish or might provide inspiration and information for writers and artists.

Artwork and Other Imagery

We’re looking for storytelling through images.  We want to see skillful composition, use of color, rendering of form, character, and emotions.   For photo manipulations or photography using models, etc., all stock and resources used must be credited and used according to the stock provider’s rules.

We are not presently commissioning any work.  We are looking only for already existing work for use on site pages or for illustrating stories.  We pay $10 for the non-exclusive right to use each image, for as long as the site is online.  If we publish a print collection we will pay a pro-rata share for each image used.

Just as for written works, we’re not looking for romance, fan art*, hate, horror, blood & guts, excessive violence, sex, nudity, copies of photographs, propaganda, or work that leave readers feeling they’ve had the energy and joy sucked out of them.  We do not accept work using materials that required the death or mistreatment of animals.

*If the original work is still in copyright and was not commissioned or sanctioned by the creator or owner we will not accept it.  Some fan art is accepted or encouraged by the copyright owners — e.g., cosplay, and these works we welcome.
An illustration of a fairy tale, myth, legend, old classic, or any work no longer in copyright would not be counted as fan art.

No simultaneous submissions, and no multiple submissions to the same genre.  Please include title, medium, size, and any remarks relevant to the work’s creation.

Submit text in .doc and images as a jpg or through a link.  Provide links to all stock used.  For video, if possible send links, and have it available in both MP4 and WEBM formats for compatibility across all browsers.

On the submissions page, remember to check that you agree with the terms of our guidelines before you submit.

Interstellar submitters please use standard Earth formats or query in advance for other arrangements.  We’d love to be the first to publish your work here on Earth!

After reading our guidelines you can enter the submissions page here

Ongoing Submissions: Metaphorosis

metaphorosis

Payment: $.01/word

We publish science fiction and fantasy, broadly defined.

What we want:

  • style – We want writers who use language beautifully – so that words aren’t just the carrier for your story, they’re part of the scenery. We want the poetry of Roger Zelazny, the finesse and ingenuity of Jack Vance.
  • mood – We want stories with atmosphere, where mood is an important element. Think Patricia A. McKillip or Richard Llewellyn.
  • character – We want stories with characters – real people with real emotions, whether those people are aliens or trolls or both. Think Arthur C. Clarke or Richard Adams.
  • intellect and emotion – We want writing that makes us think and feel. We want the intellect of A. A. Attanasio, the social awareness of Ursula K. Le Guin, the impact of George R. R. Martin’ short fiction.
Whom do we like?

In addition to the above, we like Walter M. Miller, Jr., Richard Cowper, Theodore Sturgeon, Samuel Delany, James Thurber, Orson Scott Card, K. J. Parker, Robin Hobb, Julie Czerneda, Sean Stewart, Mari Ness, Ken Liu, Oliver Buckram, Fran Wilde, and a host of others. Not enough cues? See our reviews.

How long can my story be?

As long as it needs to be. Keep in mind, though, that we’re looking to average 4,000 words/per story; 1,000 to 6,000 words is the sweet spot. We’re unlikely to publish serials.

What we don’t want:
  • isms – We want stories with a modern perspective, not worlds that recreate historical mistakes. If your story is about gender relations, by all means have subservient women (or subservient men, or subservient gender neutrals) if it’s relevant. If that’s not what your story’s about, we’re not interested in a standard medieval model where men are in charge because they’re men, or a distant future world where skin color (or sexual orientation, or …) works just like it does today. Dream bigger.
  • retreads – we don’t mind if the concept of your story is something the world has seen before, so long as you do something new with it. But don’t send us Tolkien and Clarke with the names changed and a fresh coat of paint.
Hard sell

Nothing is out of bounds; we don’t want to set limits on imagination. However, we’re less likely to be interested in military SF, time travel, vampires, or zombies.

Other
  • Reprints: No, unless specifically solicited.
  • Simultaneous: Yes, but if you sell your piece elsewhere, please withdraw it through Submittable.
  • Multiple: Yes, within reason (two pieces at a time).

Vegan bonus points

Format

Follow the industry standard format defined by William Shunn. He has templates available, or you can use ours (LibreOffice, Word). We prefer a proportional, serif font like Cambria or Caladea.

Your story should be in one of the following file formats: ODT, DOC, DOCX, RTF.

Rights and payment:

Fiction

We pay a semi-pro rate of $.01/word. We’re buying the rights to:

  • post the story on our website – exclusive for 6 months from publication, non-exclusive for the life of the magazine.
  • include the story in a monthly issue sent to Patreon supporters.
  • include the story in a best-of anthology published within the calendar year after your story is published in our magazine.

A sample contract is here.

Art

We buy one piece of art per month, at a flat rate of $50. Art submitted must be 1563 x 2500 pixels, or a multiple thereof; templates are available as XCF, PSD, and JPG. We buy non-exclusive rights for use on our website, in a monthly issue, and in an annual anthology.

Content should include science fiction or fantasy elements. We’re not keen on violence or  erotica. We won’t take any pieces that show animals in subjugation.

A sample contract is here.

Payment process

We pay when we accept the piece, regardless of publication date. We pay only through PayPal.

How we’ll respond:

  • turnaround – we’ll try to respond within two weeks. Track your submission at Submission Grinderor Duotrope; we try to watch those figures as well as our own. We’ll likely be a bit slower when we first start up.
  • feedback – we’ll try to give feedback on the content your story, and on what page we decided the story wasn’t for us.

How to submit:

IFF you’ve read all the above, submit
