Theme: Speculative fiction food stories!
My grandpa had a drive-in diner in Rupert, Idaho in the 60s called Chuck’s In-and-Out. It was well known and all the kids went there. My aunt served the burgers (sans roller-skates—Grandma put a stop to that notion! ) and Grandma made the best french fry sauce in the galaxy. Grandpa taught me that food, from the production to the preparation to the partaking, could be a simple personal pleasure or a means of bringing groups together in a shared meal. This book is dedicated to him. Miss you, Grampsy.
Whether you’re growing your produce in a magical garden, storing your rations in your lunar bunker, or enjoying a delightful picnic in the outer rings of Saturn, we want your speculative fiction food stories!

Theme: Electric Spec prefers science fiction, fantasy, and the macabre, but we’re willing to push the limits of traditional forms of these genres.
A note on our editorial policy: before publication we may work with the author to edit the story for length or readability. However, we always remain true to the spirit of the story and the author has final approval.
Issues are published at the end of February, May, August, and November. We reserve the right to shift publication date slightly, as necessary.
We have reading periods for each issue, though we never close to submissions.
Deadline: March 13th, 2022
Payment: US: $40 + author copy/non-US: $45 + ebook author copy
Theme: Short horror stories that explore the “dark carnival” concept.
Quill & Crow Publishing House is opening submissions for our second anthology for 2022, Carnival Macabre: An Anthology of Gothic Horror, due to be released in May.
For this collection, we are looking for short horror stories (5,000 – 8,000 words) that explore the “dark carnival” concept. Think H.H. Holmes during Chicago’s World Fair (Columbian Exposition), horror at a 1920s Boardwalk, or even an eerie Victorian tale. This anthology will be more open to horror themes, but we’re looking for substance over gore. As always, keep those Gothic undertones.
Things we are looking for:
Deadline: January 31st, 2022
Payment: $50
Theme: Stories that are “scary, disturbing, unsettling, and sad”
What We Publish
At 34 Orchard, we like dark, intense pieces that speak to a deeper truth. We’re not genre-specific; we just like scary, disturbing, unsettling, and sad. We like things we can’t put down and things that make us go “wow” when we’ve finished. But our main goal here at 34 Orchard is to publish the stuff we like to read, and you’re not in our heads. So don’t over think it. Just submit.
We are an international journal and welcome submissions from everyone, all over the world. As of our Fall 2021 issue, we have published work from Africa, Australia, Canada, Croatia, Greece, Italy, and the United Kingdom.

– Fiction:
We are looking for horror/dark fiction pieces between 500-3000 words. Query for longer works. Longer works are a tough sell but may be considered if they knock us off our seats. Common sense when submitting please. We do not accept stories that involve the sexual abuse/exploitation of minors. We are not looking for pure shock value. All components of your story should have merit. Gore for gore’s sake is not what we are looking for.
