Trembling With Fear – Christmas 2023 Edition!

Welcome to our special Christmas Edition of Trembling With Fear! Whether you celebrate the holidays or not, there is so much to enjoy about this time of year. Whether it’s the festive lights, the presents, the warm cups of cocoa, the snow or delicious food, the holidays are filled with so much to see and do. That also means that there is so much to inspire new tales and new takes on well-known stories.

I am always amazed and delighted to see what our writers do with the themes of each holiday, and this edition did not disappoint. We’ve had excellent submissions this year, and we’ve selected the best to be a part of our holiday collection. It was a joy to put together, I hope you enjoy our little gift to you.

Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays!

Shalini Bethala

Editor, Trembling With Fear

It’s cold outside, so we’ve got some great tales to warm your soul with terror to celebrate the howl-i-days. I hope that you’re having a great time no matter what you celebrate (or don’t celebrate) this season, and I really am thrilled that we’ve got this present of fantastic fiction to deliver to you. For once, I’m feeling a bit more like St. Nick and not Krampus… I’m sure none of you have been naughty this year and deserve presents instead, right?

Have a great one, and I truly hope that you enjoy all of the stories that have been submitted for your enjoyment! (Remember, if you love a story, give the gift of thanks to the author in either comments or on social media.)

Editor-in-Chief, Horror Tree

Dark Corners of the Old Dominion: What are the Scariest Places in Virginia?

You may be asking, “What’s so scary about Virginia?”

Well, from Edgar Allan Poe’s Ragged Mountains to the shores of Tidewater’s Seven Cities… From the blood-soaked battlegrounds of the Civil War to the shadowy political arena of the D.C. Beltway… We have four hundred years’ worth of ghost stories, folk horrors, small-town terrors, urban legends, backwoods beasts, otherworldly secrets, and down-home Southern Gothic.

“Dark Corners of the Old Dominion: A Virginia Horrors Anthology” explores those dangerous destinations, myths, and monsters from the Commonwealth’s past, present, and future.

Twenty-three authors with close ties to Virginia volunteered their time and talent to be part of this charity anthology, for which all of the publisher and author proceeds will be donated to Scares That Care, a 501c3 nonprofit dedicated to helping those with childhood illness, breast cancer fighters, and burn survivors.

A very special thanks to all the authors who contributed work for a wonderful cause. Some of the authors had time to sit down and answer a couple of questions about scary places in Virginia. We asked them to tell us about their stories, as well as where in the state they’d send a paranormal investigation team. They’ve dug up some dirt on the darkest places and here’s what they had to say:

Interview with Award-Winning Editor Deborah Sheldon

Interview with Award-Winning Editor Deborah Sheldon

Deborah Sheldon is an award-winning and award-nominated author and editor. She produces everything from novels and novellas to short stories, poetry, and anthologies—of her own stories as well as multi-author collections. For her most recent offering, Killer Creatures Down Under: Horror Stories with Bite, Deb covered the whole process from concept through commissioning and selecting the stories, to editing them and arranging the final versions.

In the introduction to this collection, Deb says, “I’ve selected the ones that gripped me, unsettled me: stories that interpreted the theme in captivating, unexpected or shocking ways. You’re about to read an eclectic mix of disturbing tales that run the gamut from action to phantasmagorical to historical to futuristic to supernatural to psychological and more. My hope is that this anthology is the literary equivalent of a box of chocolates, assuming each chocolate is hazardous in its own delectable way.”

I met up with Deb not long ago to congratulate her on the incredible variety in her ‘box of chocolates’, and to find out what is involved in producing an anthology.
