Taking Submissions: State of Horror: California
Deadline: January 1st, 2015 Payment: Royalty Split and contributor copy As part of the State of Horror Anthologies, Charon Coin Press, with editor Jerry E. Benns, will begin accepting stories based in the state of California on October 1st. State of Horror: California was previously released under Rymfire Books as a creation of Dying Days author, Armand Rosamilia. This re-release will be revised and expanded to include a total of thirteen stories. State of Horror: Californiawill also be released with new cover art. Submitted stories meeting the guidelines below will have an opportunity to be included into the upcoming release of this popular anthology series. Before we get to the guidelines, let’s take a look at the featured state for this release. The Beach Boys and Katy Perry tout the appeal of California Girls, which is true, unless they are attempting to kill you. California has everything anyone could ever want for a really good horrifying story. With its mesh of people and cultures, California is like a unique world unto itself, vastly different depending on the region you happen to be in at the time. In the northern, rugged region of California, you find a wilderness which can be daunting to even the most skilled survivalist. Mountains, animals with fangs and claws, wildfires and unpredictable weather can all contribute to the backdrop of a terrifying story. Or if an urban area is more to your liking, consider using San Francisco. San Francisco with its fog and chill, street cars, bay, the Golden Gate Bridge, and Alcatraz Island has so much to draw from for a horror story. Even the people of San Francisco share a culture unique onto themselves as they survive their daily lives—all rich material to pull from for a good story. Other regions like Napa Valley...

Taking Submissions: Apocalypse Today: Love Among the Ruins
Deadline: January 12th 2015 Payment: pro rata share of royalties and subsidiary rights revenue paid quarterly. Note: Reprints allowed APOCALYPSE TODAY: Love Among the Ruins (Deadline 1/12/15). It's the End of the World and you're looking for Love, simple as that. The world could have ended in nuclear disaster, environmental chaos, vampire/zombie apocalypse, Mayan prophecy predictions, Ebola outbreak, it’s your call. You can give us those old science fiction sex troupes - everyone has to have sex to re-populate the world (A Girl and Her Pussy, so to speak). This should be a lot of fun, and a wild ride. Be bold and go where NO MAN has ever gone before (because these stories are mainly for women readers). And please give me at least one all M/M future and one F/F world view. Stories should run between 2000 and 5000 words. Payment will be a pro rata share of royalties and subsidiary rights revenue paid quarterly. First time world rights, reprints OK. To be published by RAB as both ebook and trade paperback in 2015. Send submissions as a word doc attachment to [email protected], titles Apocalypse Today. Submissions should have your real name, pen name (if any), email address, and phone number, as well as a brief author bio. All submissions should be Times Roman 12 point, double spaced. Taking Submissions: Marked by Scorn: An anthology featuring non-traditional relationships
Deadline: January 15th, 2015 Payment: 1 paperback copy of the anthology, and be paid at the rate of 1/2 a cent per word, which equates to a maximum of US$40 This anthology is open to fiction (any genre), non-fiction, and poetry. If you submit a memoir piece, and choose to use real names, please make sure you have permission from those mentioned before submitting. In the context of this anthology, non-traditional relationships means any romantic/sexual in nature relationship that deviates from society’s stereotype of “normal.” Interracial couples, LGBT+, polyamorous and other open relationship styles, asexual, and so on. Relationships that have in the past and/or are presently deemed “unacceptable” to the majority of society, though that does not need to be the subject of the piece(s) you submit. We want all kinds of submissions about these relationships, both depressing and uplifting and anything in between, but will not publish submissions that clearly discriminate thematically against them. As with the editor’s previous publication, diversity is important. The final submissions selected for publication will reflect that, and so it will hopefully include as many types of non-traditional relationships as possible. It would also be excellent to see submissions set all over the world. If possible, we would particularly like to include submissions written by people from/living in, or submissions set in locations within the continents of Africa, Asia, and South and Central America, but will not be limited to these regions. Submissions should not include a lot of gratuitous sex (this is not an erotica anthology), but some sex is acceptable if it is relevant to the story. A special note form the editor on submissions with interracial couples: whilst I am not against publishing stories where one half of the couple is a white man, I find it very hard to...
Taking Submissions: Second Contacts
Deadline: January 15th, 2015 Payment: $0.02 a word to a maximum payment of $130.00 Science Fiction is our conversation with the future. But what if we're talking with alien voices? Bundoran Press Publishing House will open for submissions from September 15th, 2014 to January 15th, 2015 for a new anthology of science fiction stories to be edited by Mike Rimar and Hayden Trenholm. Second Contacts seeks stories which explore what happens fifty years after first contact, for us, for them, for our shared future. The possibilities are endless — conquest, collaboration, assimilation, or, even abandonment. On Earth, in space, or on alien planets, what will happen to individuals and societies after two generations or more of staring into alien eyes? Payment for first world English rights (print and digital) will be $0.02 a word to a maximum payment of $130.00 (all figures Canadian dollars). Our preferred length is 3500 to 6500 words. We will accept stories of any length to 10,000 words but the maximum payment will remain $130.00. A limited number of reprints (please query before submitting) may be purchased at a flat rate of $50. Payment on publication. Please submit in .rtf, .doc or .docx format. Email your attached rtf document to [email protected] Via: Bundoran Press.
Taking Submissions: Electric Spec – February 2015 Issue
Deadline: January 15, 2015 Payment: $20 for each story we publish A note on our editorial policy: before publication we may edit the story for length or readability. However, we always remain true to the spirit of the story. Issues are published at the end of February, May, August, and November. We have reading periods for each issue, though we never close to submissions. February closes January 15 May closes April 15 August closes July 15 November closes October 15 Please do not submit the same story more than once, and please submit only one story at a time. We consider any story between 250 and 7000 words with speculative fiction elements. We do not consider poetry, stories with over-the-top sex or violence, serials, novels, fan fiction, or non-fiction. Taking Submissions: Plasma Frequency Issue 16 – Anti-Apocalypse Issue
Deadline: January 15th, 2015 Payment: 1 cent per word We at Plasma Frequency are diving into new waters: special issues! Each special issue will be devoted to a theme or genre. For our first special issue, our editor-in-chief has handed editorial control over to Alexis A. Hunter and Molly N. Moss. They’ve chosen to go with the theme: ANTI-APOCALYPSE Now, we hear some of you asking “What does that mean?” It’s simple, really. Dark fiction is currently in vogue. With the popularity of The Walking Dead, post-apocalypse storytelling is especially widespread. Being the contrary lot that we are, the editorial staff at PFM are rebelling against the apocalypse. We invite you to join us … and get published and paid to do so. Show us a future that is bright, not bleak. At first blush, this may sound like a theme that excludes fantasy and horror. Not so, we assure you. What would a bright future look like to ancient Rome, or to a tribe of goblins? Can a society’s utopia be a threat to others, or what nightmare might threaten the blessed civilization’s existence? This is what speculative fiction is all about. We know you can do it. Now prove us right! Just remember that conflict is the soul of a thrilling story. Seek out the conflicts that can occur in an anti-apocalypse setting. Trust us, seek and ye shall find. We are prepared to accept one novelette of 7500-10,000 words, in addition to pieces in our usual 1-7500 range. Most of the stories we accept for this issue will be under 5k, per our usual preferences. Guidelines Word Limit: Up to 10k. Pay Rate: 1 cent per word Genres: Science Fiction, Fantasy, Horror Simultaneous Submissions: No Multiple Submissions: No (You can still submit a separate story to our...

Taking Submissions: Monsters
Deadline: Friday, January 30, 2015 Payment: $0.05US cents/per word up to 5,000 words, for each edited manuscript accepted into the anthology There are real-live monsters all around us. All you have to do to find them is open your eyes. For our next anthology of horror, MONSTERS (this is the working title and is likely to change), we’re looking for your best original horror fiction that investigates the evil that lives among us—the monster that is man. MONSTERS will include a selection of dark fiction focusing on ‘man as monster.’ We are looking for your most horrifying, most dreadful, most frightening tales that highlight the creatures that haunt your nightmares, or even those who may live down the block. For this anthology we want your dark, chilling, character-driven tales portraying the deadliest monsters of all—mankind. While we are not specifically looking for stories whose characters, setting or plot include classic horror monsters—werewolves or vampires and their ilk—we will not disqualify such tales as, on the most basic of levels, these classic monsters are still (or once were) human. Although, stories that include such famous fiends should, at minimum, put a new spin on the theme or have a brand new take on the chosen horror monster. What we most definitely do want to read are stories that encapsulate the dark and demented behavior of the monster that lives next door (or maybe even the one who lives in your own house…) Serial killers. Demented clowns. Vengeful mothers-in-law. The possibilities are, literally, endless. As with our current catalog of bestselling anthologies, we do not want to limit your creativity with a narrow theme. We expect MONSTERS will include a wide range of stories of monsters from every category, with the common denominator being that they must have some connection with their humanity....

Taking Submissions: Gaia: Shadow And Breath Vol. 2
Deadline: January 31st 2014 Payment: 1 cent per word for original work, nothing for reprints. Also a free digital copy of the issue as well as a discount on the print copy. We are accepting fantasy, dark fantasy and magical realism submissions for the second volume of our annual anthology. The only hard requirement for this anthology is that it be one of the genres mentioned above. If nature plays a part in your piece, in setting or theme, then it gets extra points but it’s not required. Submissions open September 1st 2014 and close January 31st (tentative). We want to see the prompt inspire your writing. To bleed through every letter. If our quarterly is about Apollo, give us stories about the galaxies, about the sun, about archery. Give us stories that breathe Apollo. If the prompt is Artemis, give us forests, give us beasts, give us epic hunts. This does not mean we want stories ABOUT Apollo, or Artemis. VERY IMPORTANT: Please include a note as to how your story is inspired or relates to the theme/prompt you are submitting to. If you do not do this, we cannot guarantee your story will be read. A single sentence is sufficient. This is not necessary for our annual, genre specific anthologies (Gaia and Typhon). NOTE: Please read the entire page before emailing questions. Make sure your submissions are up to the submission guidelines listed on this page. If submissions do not follow these guidelines, it is not guaranteed that they will be read. Please make sure files follow these important guidelines: Double Spaced Font: Courier or Times New Roman Author Name & Email included Word Count DO NOT Paste into Cover Letter box Number Pages FICTION: Pantheon Magazine is interested in fresh, creative, and powerful fiction that grips us and doesn’t...

All gender pairings, sub-genre, and content rating are accepted for this book, but the main theme has to be romance. The word limit is a 15,000 word maximum with no minimum word count. Taking Submissions: Carpe Noctem: Truly, Madly, Deeply
Deadline: February 1st, 2015 Payment: Royalty Split and contributor copy The heart wants what the heart wants… even if what it wants is not human. Every relationship can be tough, now imagine the challenges when one of the parties is not human. Somehow the mundane milestones like meeting the parents, changing your Facebook status, leaving your toothbrush, or making room in the closet, seem less important when faced with a partner who might just have you for dinner. I mean seriously, dating someone of a different religion or race can be challenging enough, but another species? How do you explain your lover’s pointy teeth, a little extra hair, horns, cat-like eyes, or scales? Even if they look human, how do you date someone who doesn’t eat, walks through walls, turns to ash in the sun? How do you even go about meeting someone who is not quite human? Is there a new category for ‘species’ on Match.com? Submission Guidelines Charon Coin Press is pleased to announce a new anthology in the realm of urban fantasy/paranormal romance – Carpe Noctem – Truly, Madly, Deeply. We are looking for stories where a supernatural creature finds themselves romantically involved with a plain old human. We are looking for stories that delve into the unique challenges that come from being in a relationship with ghosts, vampires, succubus, werewolves, swamp monsters, demons, Big Foot, gods or demi-gods, angels, or those things that come from your darkest desires that have yet to be named. We are looking for imaginative tales, not just the normal ‘girl falls for bad boy, bad boy turns out to be a monster’. While those are fine, we have seen these stories before, so yours will need to be spectacular to be included. And sorry no human beasts, we know there are...

Taking Submissions: The First Line – Spring 2015
Deadline: February 1, 2015 Payment: We pay on publication: $25.00 - $50.00 for fiction, $5.00 - $10.00 for poetry, and $25.00 for nonfiction (all U.S. dollars). We also send you a copy of the issue in which your piece appears. You'll receive your money and issue at the same time. We love the fact that writers around the world are inspired by our first lines, and we know that not every story will be sent to us. However, we ask that you do not submit stories starting with our first lines to other journals (or post them online on public sites) until we've notified you as to our decision (usually two to three weeks after the deadline). When the entire premise of the publication revolves around one sentence, we don't want it to look as if we stole that sentence from another writer. If you have questions, feel free to drop us a line. One more thing while I've got you here: Writers compete against one another for magazine space, so, technically, every literary magazine is running a contest. There are, however, literary magazines that run traditional contests, where they charge entry fees and rank the winners. We do not - nor will we ever - charge a submission fee, nor do we rank our stories in order of importance. Occasionally, we run contests to help come up with new first lines, or we run fun, gimmicky competitions for free stuff, but the actual journal is not a contest in the traditional sense. Fiction: All stories must be written with the first line provided. The line cannot be altered in any way, unless otherwise noted by the editors. The story should be between 300 and 5,000 words (this is more like a guideline and not a hard-and-fast rule; going over...
Taking Submissions: The Tomato Anthology
Deadline: February 1st, 2015 Payment: Under 3k - $10, over 3k - $20. Miscellaneous pieces (artwork, recipes, poetry of at least a page) - $5. Haiku - $1 each. We want your tomatoes. Well, not literally. We want your tomato stories. Yes, you read that right. Stories about tomatoes. And poetry. And recipes. And artwork. Ink Monkey and Amoeba Ink are joining together to create an anthology dedicated to the fruit/vegetable. And we need you. Guidelines: Tomatoes MUST play a large part in your piece. No, it doesn’t have to be an ode to your love (or hate) of the tomato, but you have to include them somehow in your story. If we can’t find the tomato reference, we won’t take your story, no matter how good it is. Stories must be under 7500 words. If you have a piece that is longer, query first. Any genre will be considered. Remember the tomato. We will also accept poetry of any length, original recipes, and artwork. The artwork must be reproducible in black and white. We have a cover artist, so don’t even ask. Stories must be PG-13 or milder. We will consider some language and slight violence, so long as it is important to the story. Attack of the Killer Tomatoes, Fried Green Tomatoes, Veggie Tales, and Ratatouille have been done before. Be original. Payment and release: We plan to release this anthology at the Tomato Arts Festival in East Nashville, TN, in summer of 2015. A Kickstarter campaign will launch before that. Story authors will be paid as follows: Under 3k - $10, over 3k - $20. Miscellaneous pieces (artwork, recipes, poetry of at least a page) - $5. Haiku - $1 each. In the event of a successful Kickstarter campaign, we will increase these payment amounts. Contributors will...
