Taking Submissions: Return To San Cicaro

Deadline: October 11th, 2019 Payment: $135 Earlier this year we did an open call and produced Welcome to San Cicaro, the first of Thunderbird Studios’ original anthologies. We got some great stories and exciting new writers, and had a blast doing it. In fact, we enjoyed it so much… we’re doing it again! Once more, we’re taking another plunge into the mysterious, paranormal jewel of the Golden State—San Cicaro. Want to play in our city? Here’s another chance. As before, we’re looking for yarns of dark urban fantasy, the weird, the macabre and the hopeful. Tell us of unassuming teenagers stumbling upon witch meetups, who weave spells for good or ill. Of hell-born creatures leaving scenes of carnage that confound the police. Of trolls trying to fit into the society of the homeless. We want them all.  The best way of course to understand the vibe and atmosphere of the stories we are looking for is to pick up a copy of Welcome to San Cicaro, and give it a read. You can also check our prior call for more details. Details: Submitted short stories should have a minimum of around 5,000 words up to a soft limit of 8,000 words. We can go as high as 10,000 but will be looking to whittle that down. Formatting should follow William-Shunn guidelines. Aside from editing and proofreading your work, the editors will also make very minor changes to fit your tale into San Cicaro itself. We may recommend street names, slightly modify passages to mention landmarks, or other such continuity tweaks. Most importantly, we may connect your story not only to the prior anthology, but to stories published in this release. Our ultimate goal is to add tiny details that join your story into a greater, connected narrative. Authors will be recompensed with a one-time payment...

Taking Submissions: Electric Spec November Issue 2019

Deadline: October 15th, 2019 Payment: $20 per story Please don't query us about your story submission. We don't have the manpower to answer such queries. An editor will email you back as soon as possible with the decision about your story. This can take a few days, or, up to three months. We make every effort to get back to authors in a timely manner but we get a lot of submissions so sometimes it's not possible. A note on our editorial policy: before publication we may edit the story for length or readability. However, we always remain true to the spirit of the story. Issues are published at the end of February, May, August, and November. We reserve the right to shift publication date slightly, as necessary. We have reading periods for each issue, though we never close to submissions. February closes January 15 May closes April 15 August closes July 15 November closes October 15 Please do not submit the same story more than once, and please submit only one story at a time. We consider any story between 250 and 7000 words with speculative fiction elements. We prefer science fiction, fantasy, and the macabre, but we're willing to push the limits of traditional forms of these genres. We do not consider poetry, stories with over-the-top sex or violence, serials, novels, fan fiction, or non-fiction. We don't accept multiple submissions; in other words, only submit one story at a time and wait for a response before submitting another. We accept simultaneous submissions as long as you let us know up front and tell us as soon as it's accepted elsewhere. We do not publish reprints, including anything that has appeared on a website. We pay $20 for each story we publish. We buy first-printing world exclusive rights for four months....

Taking Submissions: Exchange Students

Deadline: October 15th, 2019 Payment: $20, royalties, and a contributor's copy EXCHANGE STUDENTS is an anthology to be published by Hadrosaur Productions that will explore the vast realms of what it might mean to be an exchange student at any point in time, space, or across dimensions. Most of us have known foreign exchange students in our school years. This anthology imagines an exchange student program expanded to include students from the past, the future, fairies, trolls, distant alien races, and any other exchange student the author might dream of. Needs: Science Fiction, fantasy, or horror stories up to 6,000 words. Query if you have a longer story you feel would be suitable. Flash fiction (1000 words or less) is welcome. Send only complete manuscripts. Postal submissions and email attachments should be prepared in standard manuscript format as described in most writer reference books such as Writer's Market—please include a self-addressed, stamped envelope. Additional guidelines for preparing and sending electronic mail submissions are at the bottom of this document. Please only send one short story. When to submit: Deadline for submissions is October 15, 2019. We will not consider submissions sent after that date. Tips: Let your imagination soar to its greatest heights and write down the results. Above all we are looking for thought-provoking ideas, strong characters, and good writing. For this anthology, we are looking for stories about people of different cultures interacting and learning from the experience. Keep portrayals of any real, living cultures used in your story positive. Do not send: Works with excessively graphic/gory violence (good horror is about atmosphere, not cheap gross outs, and absolutely no violence to children). Please avoid clichéd or overdone ideas. We really like stories that take the conventions of science fiction and turn them on their heads—exploring them seriously and intelligently from new perspectives....

Taking Submissions: Translunar Travelers Lounge

Deadline: October 15th, 2019 Payment: 3 cents per word We are open for submissions from March 15th through April 15th for our August issue, and from September 15th through October 15th for our February issue. WHAT TO SUBMIT Broadly defined, the type of fiction we are looking for is “fun”. Yes, that descriptor is highly subjective, and ultimately it comes down to the personal preferences of the editors. However, here are a few road signs to get you started on the path into our hearts. A fun story, at its core, is one that works on the premise that things aren’t all bad; that ultimately, good wins out. This doesn’t necessarily mean that your story has to be silly or lighthearted (though it certainly can be). Joy can be made all the more powerful when juxtaposed against tragedy. In the end, though, there should be hope, and we want stories that are truly fun for as many different kinds of people as possible. As we are a speculative fiction market, all stories must have a speculative element to them. We accept stories of no more than 5,000 words. Swashbuckling adventure, deadly intrigue, and gleeful romance are some of the most obvious examples of what we’re looking for, but we won’t say no to more subtle or complicated topics, as long as they fit under the wider “fun” umbrella. We HIGHLY ENCOURAGE submissions from authors of marginalized ethnicities, sexualities, genders, abilities and perspectives. If you are an author whose experience is not often represented, we absolutely want to hear from you. YES, YOU. If you’re comfortable sharing this information with us in your cover letter, please do. What we’re enthusiastic about: Characters of all genders and sexualities or lack thereof Settings in non-Western cultures Friendship Happy marriages Stories that pass the Bechdel test...
