Taking Submissions: Exchange Students

October 15, 2019

Deadline: October 15th, 2019

Payment: $20, royalties, and a contributor’s copy

EXCHANGE STUDENTS is an anthology to be published by Hadrosaur Productions that will explore the vast realms of what it might mean to be an exchange student at any point in time, space, or across dimensions. Most of us have known foreign exchange students in our school years. This anthology imagines an exchange student program expanded to include students from the past, the future, fairies, trolls, distant alien races, and any other exchange student the author might dream of.

Needs: Science Fiction, fantasy, or horror stories up to 6,000 words. Query if you have a longer story you feel would be suitable. Flash fiction (1000 words or less) is welcome. Send only complete manuscripts. Postal submissions and email attachments should be prepared in standard manuscript format as described in most writer reference books such as Writer’s Market—please include a self-addressed, stamped envelope. Additional guidelines for preparing and sending electronic mail submissions are at the bottom of this document. Please only send one short story.

When to submit: Deadline for submissions is October 15, 2019. We will not consider submissions sent after that date.

Tips: Let your imagination soar to its greatest heights and write down the results. Above all we are looking for thought-provoking ideas, strong characters, and good writing. For this anthology, we are looking for stories about people of different cultures interacting and learning from the experience. Keep portrayals of any real, living cultures used in your story positive.

Do not send: Works with excessively graphic/gory violence (good horror is about atmosphere, not cheap gross outs, and absolutely no violence to children). Please avoid clichéd or overdone ideas. We really like stories that take the conventions of science fiction and turn them on their heads—exploring them seriously and intelligently from new perspectives. Do not send stories with essentially no science fictional or fantastic elements. Do not send stories with copyrighted characters unless you are the copyright holder. We hope to make this anthology available to people of all ages, so please avoid graphic sex.

Reprints, Simultaneous and Multiple Submissions: We do not accept simultaneous or multiple submissions. If you send a submission to us, don’t send it elsewhere. If you send a submission to us, don’t send another until you’ve heard a response. We want one story at a time. If you have a reprint you think might be suitable, please query before submitting.

Rights: We will buy first or reprint anthology rights for all material. It is important to let us know if a story will be a reprint.

Payment: We will pay a $20.00 advance per original story plus a share of royalties. Note, we are always receptive to trading product in lieu of cash payment. To see what we have available, visit http://www.hadrosaur.com. Contributors will also receive one copy of the printed book.

Response time: We attempt to respond to all submissions in a timely manner. If a submission simply doesn’t grab us, you may see a response in a few days. If we like something and we’re seriously considering it, it may take a couple of months. Don’t take a quick response as meaning your submission was “bad.” If you haven’t heard a response to your submission in about six weeks, it doesn’t hurt to query.

We request email submissions be handled as follows:

  • Either embed your work in the body of the email, or send an RTF, Word Doc, or DocX attachment. Your word processor should save in this format using the “Save as…” function. Other formats will not be considered.
  • If you embed your work in the body of the email, format stories so there is a blank line between paragraphs.
  • Email submissions must include a physical address and an email address in the body of the message and on the manuscript’s first page.
  • If the message looks like spam, there’s a good chance we will delete it unread.
  • Please include the words “Exchange Students submission” in the subject line to help us recognize your mail as a submission.
  • Like postal mail, email can be misrouted or lost. Email submissions are done at the author’s risk.
