On Spec has a special story contest for the Apocalypse! We are looking for a variety of engaging "end of the world" theme stories (3,000 to 6,000 words please). The best story will receive $300 and be the lead story in our Fall 2012 issue (said issue to be published, come hell or high water!). Weiss WHAT WE ARE LOOKING FOR: They say that the mirror reflects the soul, the Egyptians believed that the shadow held great power and could move at great speeds, and Narcissus believed that his reflection in water was a vision of his own sister - a woman of unsurpassed beauty. Sometimes a reflection shows us what we want to see, other times it shows us the horrors of what we don't. We are looking for dark fantasy/horror stories revealing the truth behind the reflections, and most certainly not limited to those mentioned. WHAT WE ARE NOT LOOKING FOR: Slash and hack, blood and gore for their own sake. Graphic rape, torture, child molestation, and animal torture have their place, but not here. No erotica or adult themes. We prefer stories written in the third person—will consider first person if you knock our socks off. This time we are going to publish it in English, even though we are a Spanish cultural association (a humble one, by the way). Later, we would translate the texts into Spanish and publish the book in that language. "Darkly Yours" will be about love and darkness, from no matter what point of view (the darker the better, though). Relationships taken from a devious angle, so to speak. Your story can be horror, dark fantasy, even SF, on the condition that love is essential to the plot and it has a twist to the dark and sinister. "Darkly Yours" will be the first English horror anthology published in Spain ever! It will feature short stories from both English & Spanish-speaking writers. We are a non-profit cultural association called Tusitala Ediciones, devoted to this kind of risky & quixotic projects since 2003. These guidelines are designed to help us facilitate processing your submission as quickly as possible. Please make sure you read and follow all guidelines. Project Title: Return of the Dead Men (and Women) Walking Project Scope: For purposes of this anthology, we are limiting consideration to those stories that feature corporeal undead. These include, but are not limited to, ghouls, liches, mummies, revenants, vampires, wights, and of course zombies. We are not interested in stories featuring incorporeal undead such as ghosts and poltergeists. Genre Considerations: Despite the subject matter, stories need not be firmly rooted in the horror genre to be considered. We will consider a wide range of stories, including fantasy, weird west, steampunk, post-apocalyptic, urban fantasy, and others. This anthology will target adult readers, and therefore young adult stories will not be considered. We will also not consider paranormal romances or erotica.
