Seven Archons Deadline: July 1st 2011 Payment: Exposure Only Looking for a place to submit that story? A new project I am starting with a friend, called Seven Archons, is looking for submissions. What we are looking for are original pieces of transgressive literature, think Chuck Palahniuk, Hubert Selby Jr., or William S. Burroughs. I'm posting this here, before I create a Duotrope's page, so that you get a little head start. OPEN SUBMISSON: What if your identity was a prison and self-destruction was your freedom? For "Writings on the Wall", we're looking for original transgressive tales involving highly developed characters who are nihilistic, anti-social, and seemingly mentally ill. These characters should feel out of touch, not only with themselves, but with the world around them. Give us your grittiest, unbound fiction. Stay to the point, but nothing is off limits. However, keep in mind we do want quality writing. If it is purely for the sake of shock value, it will be rejected. Deadline: July 1 Please submit in: Rich Text Formatting 12 Pt. Picture a riot policeman of the late 60s with a face shield on his helmet, a handlebar mustache and a Sten gun fending them off… Submission Guidelines 800 word minimum, 20,000 word maximum (unless it’s so good and full of zombie killing, hippie stomping goodness it makes us want to make an exception). You just need to make some kind of reference to hippies where your zombies are concerned. It can be something as simple as the mention of a corpse in a NO HIPPES t-shirt shambling by, to a troop of zombie skateboarders trying to eat National Guard troops at a skate park in Atlanta while one of the sergeants yells “Die, hippies!”, to a story revolving entirely around a zombie attack beginning at Woodstock or Berkley back in the 60s. Machine of Death 2 Deadline: July 15th 2011 Payment: $200 Anybody can submit a story to Machine of Death, and we mean anybody. There are only two eligibility requirements: any story you submit must be written in English, and you (or a legal guardian, if you’re a minor) must be willing and able to sign a contract if the story is accepted. That’s it! Our first book featured stories written by people who had never been published before, and people who make their living writing. There were stories by video game reviewers, lexicographers, comedians, poets, cartoonists, college students, and plenty of folks with totally square day jobs. Our writers were living in North America, Europe, Asia, South America, and Australia. (Africa and Antarctica — show us what you got!) We love this diversity; we think different viewpoints, different life experiences, and different writing styles make for a unique and awesome book. So yes, absolutely anybody can submit a story — including you! This first section is about the technical details of how to submit. This is a collection of stories to be enjoyed by everyone, please keep excessive cussing and sex out unless integral to your character. WHAT WE ARE NOT LOOKING FOR: Slash and hack, blood and gore for their own sake. Graphic rape, torture, child molestation, and animal torture have their place, but not here. In Poe's Shadow Deadline: July 31st Payment: 1 cent a word US, plus one copy Dark Opus Press is proud to present In Poe's Shadow, our first annual anthology. We are huge fans of Edgar Allan Poe's work and feel it only fitting that he is the inspiration for this anthology. That being said, we are looking for modern tales spun off of any of Poe's stories. We're sorry, but for the concept we're going for here we are not accepting poetry, reprints or artwork for this anthology. Our guidelines are simple. All stories MUST be inspired by Edgar Allan Poe and between 2,000 and 4,000 words (this word count is firm); When we say inspired, we aren't looking for direct retellings we're looking for your original story that has the flavor Poe. MUST be in proper manuscript format. This means: Courier New or Times New Roman fonts, doubled spaced, no extra space between paragraphs, indent paragraphs. Words meant to be italicised or bolded in the final print, please make sure it is that way in your manuscript. In the subject line please put: anthology submission - Your story title/Poe's referenced story. Taking Submissions: Stupefying Stories
Stupefying Stories Deadline: July 31st 2011 Payment: 1/4-cent per word What are we looking for? Since the target date for releasing Stupefying Stories II is October 1, we've decided to make this one our Halloween issue. Therefore, we are looking for stories that fit in with a general "Halloween" theme, which is to say, scary stories. In the initial announcement, I used the word horror. That was perhaps a mistake, as it appears that horror has become synonymous with splattered gore and nauseating violence. (I blame Wes Craven.) I'm more interesting in seeing the sort of stories that give readers the cold shivers. You know, the kind of story that would, if you were reading it by the light of a single lamp in a quiet house after midnight, make you want to get up, turn on a few more lights, and make sure the doors and windows are closed and locked. I personally am a big fan of ghost stories. For that matter, I also have a strong fondness for that disturbing mix they call "horror-comedy." Case in point, I would dearly love to publish a story the equal of "Bubba Ho-Tep." But not identical to "Bubba Ho-Tep," of course. That one's already been written. If this is not coming out until October, why the July 31 deadline? Because the one lesson we really learned from doing Stupefying Stories: It Came From The Slushpile, is just how long it takes to get a book through production and into print. There's a heck of a lot of behind-the-scenes work that comes into play after the content has been picked. So yes, to be ready to begin shipping this thing in late September, we need to have the final content nailed down by August 15, at the latest. Speaking of Stupefying...
