NewMyths.com publishes speculative fiction of every stripe except graphic horror. We like each issue to have an eclectic variety of stories: funny, frightening, hard and soft sci-fi, adventure, thoughtful, etc. Every issue includes at least one nonfiction piece dealing with some aspect of science, myth, folklore, or literature as it relates to speculative fiction, usually of the well-researched essay variety rather than opinion or editorial. Speculative poetry is welcome. We tend to receive a lot of free verse and not enough “form” poetry. We also buy one piece of artwork per issue, and occasionally commission one. We publish book reviews of recent releases about every two weeks. If you have written a review, or have a book coming out soon, please contact us.
Reading an issue is the best way to know if your submission is a fit for NewMyths.com or not.
Responses take 60-90 days on average. Feel free to send a follow-up query after that point. Submissions made outside the submission windows may be deleted, unread. We save email addresses for the sole purpose of sending notice when the new issue is online or another NewMyths.com publication will be released. If you do not want to be notified, please let us know. These email addresses will never be sold or shared with any other organization.
Do not send attachments, only stories included in the body of the email will be read. Stories and nonfiction articles on NewMyths.com are updated every quarter on December 15, March 15, June 15, and September 15. Old stories are archived under the date of publication and author name.
Send the full text with a query letter including a brief biography. If you would like me to include a link to your website, please say so.
Send your submission(s) to: [email protected].
Format:
Please use standard ezine format:
Single space between lines, double space between paragraphs, flush left (no indentation). We prefer that italics are underlined.
Fiction will be considered as long as it meets the following criteria:
Length:
Up to 10,000 words.
Content:
There must be some fantasy or science fiction element to the story. No adult content.
Nonfiction:
Submissions are welcome as long as they deal with some aspect of fantasy or science fiction. Length less than 10,000 words.
Examples that come to mind include mythology, folklore, science as it applies to science fiction, how people lived in different time periods, book/film reviews, etc.
Poems:
Please no more than 5 at a time, any length. Be sure there is a science fiction or fantasy element or they will not be considered.
Simultaneous Submissions:
No problem. We ask that you please indicate in your cover letter/email that your story is a simultaneous submission, and notify us as soon as possible if it has been accepted by another publication.
Rights:
NewMyths.com acquires first publication rights only (we are not interested in stories that have already been published elsewhere). Authors retain their copyright on all works after first publication on the NewMyths.com website.
By submitting a piece to NewMyths.com you agree that, should the piece be accepted, you grant NewMyths.com a non-exclusive, non-transferable, non-sublicensable right and license to digitally archive and display the piece (aka Digital Archive Rights).
In the case that we later desire to include your work in any other format (e.g. print, anthology, etc.), those rights will be separately negotiated at that time.
Payment upon publication:
NewMyths.com currently pays 1.5 cents/word with a minimum payment of $30 for all submissions, fiction, flash fiction, nonfiction and poetry.
Artwork:
$60 or more. Send a thumbnail and we’ll discuss it.
Book Reviews:
Please query first. We purchase reviews for $30. Sometimes we supply the book, sometimes not. Length is 500-1,000 words.
Books for Review:
We only review hard copies, not e-books. We usually don’t review self-published books, though we welcome books from small presses. Send a query and we’ll provide details.
