Ongoing Submissions: Dark Nowhere

Payment: $10
Theme: Hard-hitting in a tasteful way, preferably with a supernatural angle.

DarkNowhere.com is a horror genre news site launching mid-February (mind our dust!). We are currently seeking authors to fill two aspects of the site: Horror related news, blogs, reviews, and editorials (Think Bloody Disgusting and Dread Central), and Horror fiction.

Horror related news pieces are currently byline only. Our publisher has deep experience within the world of entertainment journalism and we expect these positions to lead to interview opportunities, advanced screeners, and various media access in the short term.

What we are most excited to bring to this space is semi-weekly fiction. We are paying $10 per story for publication rights on the site as well as production on our planned bi-weekly podcast.

We are looking for horror that is hard hitting in a tasteful way. Preference is given to pieces with a supernatural angle, but we can appreciate a good psychological scare too. Gore is okay as long as it isn’t the focus of your story. No explicit sex, rape, or anything adult content in nature.

Fiction submissions can be sent in any format.

Ideal length is 1,000 – 10,000 Words.

Reprints and simultaneous submissions are not accepted

The magazine is looking for 3-Months exclusivity and the ability to leave the story online after that as well as include it in their podcast, after the 3 months of online exclusivity, rights return to the author.

For more information or to submit, email us at [email protected].

Taking Submissions: Electric Spec May Issue 2021

Deadline: April 15th, 2021
Payment: $20 per story
Theme: Electric Spec prefers science fiction, fantasy, and the macabre, but we’re willing to push the limits of traditional forms of these genres.

Fiction Submission Guidelines

submissions at electricspec (dot) com
Please don’t query us about your story submission. We don’t have the manpower to answer such queries. An editor will email you back as soon as possible with the decision about your story. This can take a few days, or, up to three months. We make every effort to get back to authors in a timely manner but we get a lot of submissions so sometimes it’s not possible.

A note on our editorial policy: before publication we may edit the story for length or readability. However, we always remain true to the spirit of the story.

Issues are published at the end of February, May, August, and November. We reserve the right to shift publication date slightly, as necessary.

We have reading periods for each issue, though we never close to submissions.

February closes January 15

May closes April 15

August closes July 15

November closes October 15

Please do not submit the same story more than once, and please submit only one story at a time.

Ongoing Submissions: Flash Point Science Fiction

Payment: $15
Theme: Fantasy, Science Fiction, Slipsream, and related.

Flash Point Science Fiction wants speculative fiction stories from 100 to 1,000 words in length. Send us your science fiction, fantasy, slipstream, and everything in between, so long as it’s short. We here at FPSF are partial to flash fiction and want to see the flash market grow. So as much as it pains us, please take your 10,000 word tour de force elsewhere. We’re not looking for the next Brandon Sanderson. (Unless you are, in fact, Brandon Sanderson, in which case we’d be delighted!)

Ongoing Submissions: Dread Imaginings

Payment: 1 cent per word
Theme: Horror stories with original monsters

This is a personal project, and I’ll be surprised if these do not change as it unfolds.  That said, I try to be prompt with any updates.  For now, here’s the news:

What I’m not looking for:

  • Non-Fiction
  • Poetry
  • Artwork
  • Multiple or simultaneous submissions
  • Re-submissions of previously rejected MS (if I am interested in seeing a revision of something, I will specifically request it)
  • Reprints

What I am looking for:

  • Stories up to 4000 words (firm), previously unpublished on paper or electronically.
  • Stories that read fast.  Don’t bog the tale down with a lot of explication.
  • Stories set in the contemporary world, rather than historical fiction or tales set in fantasy/science fiction landscapes.
  • Stories that present your protagonist’s encounter with the horrific, disturbing, uncanny, weird, macabre, and/or grotesque.
  • Stories that are character-focused.  That encounter should have some impact upon your protagonist’s outlook and/or actions as the story unfolds.
  • Stories that succeed by using concrete detail to show what happens and convey why it is important, rather than trying to tell the reader why.  Resist the urge to explain.
  • Originality.  Creature-features are welcome, but your own monsters will probably be an easier sell than vampires, zombies, werewolves, et. al.

Sample Contract

If your piece is accepted, you will receive a contract like the sample one below outlining the rights you will be licensing to microverses. Basically, you will be granting us the non-exclusive right to display your work on our site. We’re happy to answer any questions and make changes to the contract as well.

This Agreement made between microverses, and its successors and assigns, hereinafter referred to as the Publisher, and [author name], hereinafter referred to as the Author.

The parties agree as follows:

(1) The Work. This Agreement pertains solely to the Author’s textual work titled “[Story Title].”

(2) Limitations On Scope Of Grant.

(i) This Agreement is not a transfer of the copyright to the Work.

(ii) All rights not expressly granted by the Author reside exclusively with the Author.  Any rights that may be developed in the future shall reside with the Author.

(3) Electronic Rights. The Author grants non-exclusive electronic rights to the Publisher to include the Work in the Magazine, for publication in the English language [and Spanish or Chinese if applicable] on or before [the date by which first publication must occur.]

For the avoidance of doubt, the rights granted to the Publisher under this paragraph are rights only to the publication or dissemination of an electronic replica of the Work as it is incorporated in the Magazine website, and not to any other publication, dissemination or use of the Work.

The Author may terminate the grant of non-exclusive electronic rights and ask the Publisher to remove the Work from the magazine’s website, archives, electronic back issues, bundles, or any other electronic format, and the Publisher agrees that it will comply within 30 days of such request.

(4) (a) For the rights granted to the Publisher in this Agreement, the Publisher shall pay the Author the sum of [payment amount], no later than 60 days after receipt by the Publisher of this agreement executed by the Author.  If payment is not received as required by this paragraph, all rights granted hereunder shall immediately revert to the Author.

(b) Payment shall be made by PayPal or by another means agreed to by the Author.

Any fees, charges, or commissions required because of use of electronic means of payment shall be paid by the Publisher.

(5) If the Publisher fails to publish the Work by [the date by which first publication must be made], all rights granted hereunder shall immediately revert to the Author. In such event, the Author shall retain any payments made under this Agreement prior to such reversion.

(6) Arising under and terminating with the grant of rights to the Work in this Agreement, the Author grants Publisher the right to use the Author’s name and biographical material for all advertising, promotion and other use of the Work. Upon request, the Author shall provide the Publisher with appropriate biographical material for such use. The Publisher shall use only the Author’s name and biographical material provided and approved by the Author.

(7) The Author warrants that, as of the date of executing this agreement, the Author is the sole author of the Work; that the Author is the owner of all the rights granted to the Publisher hereunder and has full power to enter into this agreement and to make the grants herein contained; that the Work is original and any prior publication of the Work in whole or in part has been fully disclosed to the Publisher; and that to the best of the Author’s knowledge the Work does not infringe upon any copyright or upon any other proprietary or personal right of any person, firm, or corporation.

(8) The Publisher will make no alterations to the Work’s text or title without the Author’s written approval in email or hardcopy. The Author will be provided with the Publisher’s proposed version of the work prior to publication and given sufficient time to review text. The Publisher reserves the right to make minor copyediting changes to conform the style of the text to its customary form and usage.

(9) The Publisher agrees to list a proper copyright notice for the Work in the name of the Author at the end of the Web-published story.

(10) The Author will be credited at the beginning of the story as [author’s byline].

(11) The Publisher shall not make the Work available to any distributor, catalogue, service, or computer program which alters the text of the work or the display of the work, beyond typographic or formatting changes that do not affect the meaning of the work, or facilitate such changes—including but not limited to removing or changing profanity—without written permission of the Author.

(12) Regardless of its place of execution, this agreement shall be interpreted under the laws of the State of California.

(13) Successors and Assigns. Publisher may not assign or in any way transfer this contract or the rights granted by it to another person or entity without the written permission of Author.

(14) Amendment. This Agreement constitutes the entire Agreement between the parties, and supersedes all prior writings or oral agreements. This Agreement may be amended, only by a written agreement clearly setting forth the amendments and signed by both parties.

(15) Void Provision. If any term or condition of this Agreement is found by a court of competent jurisdiction to be illegal, unlawful or otherwise unenforceable, the parties agree that such term or condition shall be reformed as nearly as may be possible to carry forth the intentions of the parties and that such illegality, unlawfulness, or unenforceability shall not act to void any other term or condition of this Agreement nor to void the Agreement as a whole.

(16) The parties acknowledge that each party has read and understood this contract before execution.

In witness whereof the parties have executed this contract in duplication originals on this DD day of [full name of month], YYYY.

Ongoing Submissions: Rattle – General Poetry

Payment: $200 if accepted for a print issue, $100 if accepted for online publication.
Theme: Poetry of all shapes and sizes

Rattle publishes unsolicited poetry and translations of poetry.

Submissions are open year-round, always welcomed, and always free. Despite their growing prevalence in the literary community, we do not believe in submission fees and never will.

Rattle does not accept work that has been previously published, in print or online (we do NOT consider self-publishing to blogs, message boards, or social media as publication with respect to this rule).

Simultaneous submissions are encouraged. If the work is accepted elsewhere, just add a note through Submittable, or, if you submitted in hard copy, email to let us know. We don’t publish anything without your signature, anyway; if another journal beats us to the punch, congratulations!

Contributors in print receive $200/poem and a complimentary one-year subscription to the magazine. Online contributors receive $100/poem.

All free submissions are automatically considered for the annual Neil Postman Award for Metaphor, a $2,000 prize judged by the editors.

Poems

We like poems of any length. Send up to four poems at a time. We’re looking for poems that move us, that might make us laugh or cry, or teach us something new. We like both free verse and traditional forms—we try to publish a representative mix of what we receive. We read a lot of poems, and only those that are unique, insightful, and musical stand out—regardless of style. Since our issues include about 70 pages of poetry, one of the main things we’re looking for is diversity; we have enough room to be eclectic, and we plan on using it. So while most magazines suggest reading their back issues to get a sense of what they like to publish, we’d suggest reading to get a sense of what we’re having trouble finding—if you notice a style or subject matter that we don’t seem to be publishing, send us that!

Rattle publishes about 300 poems each year, and almost all of them come from unsolicited submissions. Your submissions keep us going, and we always appreciate them.

Required Information

Please include this information with each submission:

Name, Mailing Address, Phone Number, Email address

If submitting electronically, use the appropriate fields when you upload your file on Submittable, but avoid including your name or contact information anywhere within the file itself. If submitting by mail, only include your name and contact information in the cover letter, not above the poems. We ignore the poet’s name while reading submissions to be as fair as possible, and this makes it easier.

In addition, please send a short contributor note for the author. Your note should tell us who you are and why you love poetry. Our notes section is something that makes issues of Rattle unique, and many say it’s as fun to read as the poetry itself. Contributor notes should be in the first person, and follow the format of this sample:

Erik Campbell: “One afternoon in the summer of 1994 I was driving to work and I heard Garrison Keillor read Stephen Dunn’s poem ‘Tenderness’ on The Writer’s Almanac. After he finished the poem I pulled my car over and sat for some time. I had to. That is why I write poems. I want to make somebody else late for work.” (email address, web address, or Twitter handle goes here at the end if you’d like it included)

Notes in this form are only needed upon acceptance—it doesn’t have to be included with each submission, though we would enjoy it.

Please keep in mind that submitting to Rattle implies an interest in the magazine, and anyone who submits will be added to our mailing list to receive occasional updates on new issues, events, and calls for submissions. We never buy, sell, trade, or share your information with anyone. View our Privacy Policy for more information. You may opt out of our mailing list at any time, in writing or with an email to:

Payment

Payment for print publication (from us to you in exchange for your work) is $200 and a complimentary one-year subscription to the magazine, including the issue in which your work appears. Contributors also may pre-order additional copies of their issue at our cost to produce. Payment for online-only work is $100.

Rights & Rules

All rights revert to the authors upon publication. To get technical, we require First Rights, meaning we want to be the first publisher to present the poems to the public. This means that we won’t consider poems that have been published in books, magazines, or newspapers, in print or online. We will, however, consider poems that have only been self-published to blogs, message boards, or social media accounts.

Though authors do retain all rights to their work, we post everything we publish on the back-issues section of the website after print publication, and so require Non-Exclusive Electronic Rights.

Response Time

Response times vary greatly, depending on volume and where we are in the production schedule, and can take anywhere from one to six months, and sometimes longer. Please do not query; we reply to every submission. You can check the status of electronic submissions any time by logging in to your account at Submittable.com.

Revisions

Please note that it is not possible to revise a poem while it’s being considered. If we decide we’d like to publish any of them, you will have an opportunity to revise author galleys at that time. Please proof-read your work carefully before you submit—but only for the sake of your own sanity. Typos happen; we don’t frivolously discard poems because of them.

Option #1: Submittable (preferred)

Submittable is so convenient for everyone, and the vast majority of submissions have been coming this way, so we’d much prefer if you submit online using this system, which allows you to track the submission and ensures that your poems will never get lost in the mail. If you are able to submit electronically, please use Submittable’s online submission manager:

submit

Option #2: Postal

We much prefer to receive submissions online, but not everyone has internet access (for example, those writing from prison), so this remains an option. Please use Submittable if at all possible. If you need to send your poems by post, don’t hesitate, but please note that poems cannot be returned, and we no longer reply to postal submissions unless to offer publication. There is no need to include a return envelope. Simply include your mailing address and phone number, and we will reach you if anything is accepted for possible publication.

Send the submission directly to our office:
