Ongoing Submissions: Theme of Absence

ThemeofAbsence3

Payment: $3.00 for flash fiction or $5.00 for longer pieces

Theme of Absence publishes speculative flash fiction. All styles are welcome, including humor, as long as the story includes elements of horror, science fiction, or fantasy. Spine-tingling ghost stories are just as welcome as robots and spaceships. While we are primarily a flash fiction site, we will occasionally accept longer pieces.

The maximum word count is 1000 for flash fiction and 3000 for short stories. We’re a token paying market, offering $3.00 for stories under 1000 words and $5.00 for longer pieces.

The token pay can either by paid through Paypal or you can waive the payment and consider it a donation to the cost of the site. As a contributor, you’ll get an author bio at the end of your story and up to two links you’d like to share. I also offer interview posts to all of our published authors.

I won’t seek any rights, other than to archive the story here as long as the site is live. However, if your story is reprinted elsewhere at a later date, be nice and give us mention. All copyright is retained by the author.

I’m not currently accepting reprints, multiple, or simultaneous submissions. A story that has at any point been made publicly available in print or online (including personal blogs) is considered previously published and will not be accepted.

If you agree with these terms, please submit your story in the following way:

How to submit: Email the story to [email protected]. In the subject, list your story title and word count. Paste the story in the body of the email with no tabs or indents and a space between paragraphs. Include an author bio with up to two links you’d like to appear at the end of the story.

If you have any questions at all, feel free to email them to [email protected].

Fiction

AE welcomes submissions from both established and emerging authors. We publish exclusively science fiction, though our interpretation of the genre can be quite inclusive. We are interested in stories from 500 to 3000 words in length. We are not soliciting poetry or screenplays at this time.

Please include a brief cover letter and the full text of your story (preferably in plain text) in the body of an email addressed to [email protected]. We will not open any attachments.

The very first thing in your subject line should be “CDN Sub” if you are a Canadian citizen or current Canadian resident, otherwise your subject line should begin with “INT Sub.” This is very important, especially if you are Canadian. We publish a limited number of international stories. The subject line must also contain both the title and approximate word count of your piece, like this: “CDN Sub: ‘Title of Story’ (1300 words).” The cover letter should include your name, byline (if different) and a brief (50 words, at most) biography. We will contact you at the same email from which you sent your submission.

If you want still more advice on how to successfully package your submission, the information you are looking for can be found in this blog post.

Submissions must be previously unpublished (in print or online) and should be strong enough to stand alone (i.e., no excerpts from a larger work). Simultaneous submissions are accepted, but please notify us immediately if your submission is accepted for publication in another venue. Please submit no more than one story at a time. We buy First Serial and First Electronic rights and non-exclusive Audio rights.

Each author will receive $0.07 CAD per word, paid within 30 days of acceptance, for all stories we publish.

Non-Fiction

AE commissions a limited number of non-fiction pieces on subjects related to Canadian science fiction. We are particularly interested in author profiles for our AE Bookshelf series and book reviews, as well as longer-form interviews with Canadian authors. Non-fiction contributors do not have to be Canadian. If you are interested in writing non-fiction for AE, please query Helen Michaud at [email protected]. Include in your query a brief biography, list of non-fiction writing credits (including links or samples if available) and what kind of articles you propose to write (the more specific the better). Do not submit unsolicited non-fiction.

Payment for non-fiction is a flat fee depending on length and content. We pay $20 for all articles (including reviews and AE Bookshelf profiles) up to 3000 words. We pay $40 for interviews.

Comics

We are interested in receiving submissions of single or recurring comics by Canadian artists. AE buys first rights or reprint rights and pays a flat $20 per comic. Please send individual comics (or 3-5 sample comics in the case of a series) to [email protected] for consideration.

Art

We buy art primarily on contract for our specific needs. AE buys first rights and pays between $20 and $100 CAD per illustration depending upon size and intended use. Please send a portfolio of work to Art Director Erika Kiessner at [email protected] to be considered for future illustration contracts.

Licensing

All content in AE is licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution NonCommercial No Derivatives license upon publication. We believe strongly in the Creative Commons mission and feel that it benefits both authors and their readers by allowing creators to reach the widest possible audience.

Note that the use of the Creative Commons license has no effect on the ability or right of the author to sell reprint rights, film rights or other secondary rights in the future. Copyright remains at all times with the author.

Response Time

We aim to respond to all queries and submissions promptly. Please feel free to send a follow-up query if you have not heard from us within 90 days.

No Longer Ongoing Submissions: Aurealis Magazine

Aurealis is still an active magazine, however, they no longer meet our definition for an ongoing market and we will post their open calls as they become available.

Payment: Aurealis pays between $20 and $60 per 1000 words, depending on the level of government grants received, and payment will be made soon after the publication of the issue containing your story. Minimum payment is $20. You will also receive a free electronic copy of the issue containing your story.

Please note: due to a large number of submissions, Aurealis will be closing to short story submissions from 1 October 2016 and will be opening again on 1 February 2017.

In 2017 Aurealis will be open to submissions during two reading periods:

1 February—31 May and 1 August—31 October

Subscribers are fast-tracked through the assessment process.

Fiction guidelines

Aurealis is looking for science fiction, fantasy or horror short stories between 2000 and 8000 words. All types of science fiction, fantasy and horror that are of a “speculative” nature will be considered, but we do not want stories that are derivative in nature, particularly those based on TV series. We do not publish horror without a supernatural element.

Although we are an Australian-based publication, we are open to submissions in English from anywhere in the multiverse.

Stories containing an unacceptable number of spelling mistakes and typos, and those that do not conform to our guidelines in other ways, will be rejected automatically. This may seem harsh, but we are being honest about it. Please take the time to polish your work in every way before you send it to us.

Aurealis pays between A$20 and A$60 per 1000 words, but assume the lower rate for unsolicited submissions.  Payment is made soon after the publication of the issue containing your story. Minimum payment is A$20. You will also receive a free electronic copy of the issue containing your story.

We buy First Electronic Publication Rights and the non-exclusive rights to include the story in a print and digital anthology. All other rights remain with the contributor. The story must not be published elsewhere for a period of twelve months after it appears in electronic form in Aurealis.

Aurealis does not publish reprints. We don’t publish poetry or novel extracts. We don’t serialise longer works.

Our response time for subscribers is no more than two months and can be up to twice as long for non-subscribers, but we are always aiming for much shorter turnarounds.  If you are a subscriber, please do not query us until two months have passed since your submission.  If you are a non-subscriber, please wait four months.  Where time permits, unsuccessful authors will be emailed a reply in the form of a checklist critique and/or a personal note. We are sorry, but Aurealis is not able to respond to queries about rejected stories.

  • Please only submit one story at a time. We do not accept simultaneous submissions.
  • Save your story file as the title of the story. Do not include your name in the file name.
  • Stories must be unpublished and if accepted must remain unpublished until they appear in Aurealis. Stories should not be published (made publically available) on personal websites, public writer’s forums, small press publications, POD books/collections, self published collections etc. We are not interested in seeing stories that have been previously rejected by the magazine.

Non-fiction submission guidelines

We are interested in articles between 500 and 2000 words of interest to readers and writers of science fiction, fantasy and horror. These include humorous pieces, serious articles and interviews. We prefer non-fiction where some visuals are included. Non-fiction must be previously unpublished and remain unpublished for 12 months after publication in Aurealis. Our payment is A$20 per 1000 words. Send all non-fiction articles and queries to [email protected].

Art guidelines

Aurealis is looking for strong, vibrant colour cover art that draws attention to the magazine.

Please forward details of the website where your work can be viewed.

Aurealis buys the rights to use the cover on an issue of the magazine as well as for subsequent promotional purposes including on our website. We acknowledge the artist in the issue in which the work appears.

Internal artwork is commissioned, but we will consider samples of your black and white work.

Artwork and artwork enquiries can be emailed to: [email protected]. We will only respond if we are interested and our response may be considerable time after the query, depending on the backlog of covers on hand.

Our payment is A$75 for cover art, A$25 for black and white story illustrations, and A$10-15 for graphics. Payment is made soon after the publication of the issue with your work.

While the utmost care is taken, Aurealis cannot accept responsibility for the loss or damage of any hard copy manuscripts or artwork.

Review book guidelines

Aurealis reviews novels, anthologies, collections and non-fiction of interest to readers of  science fiction, fantasy and horror. Please send queries to [email protected]. Do not send digital files unless requested to do so. Due to the volume of requests, we only respond if we are interested in seeing the book. A book request from us is no guarantee it will be reviewed.  Please do not send follow-up queries.

If you would like to write reviews for Aurealis, please send an expression of interest to the Reviews Editor at [email protected]. If there is an opening, the Reviews Editor will get back to you with information about how to apply.
