Taking Submissions: Dread Imaginings May Call (Early Listing)

Submission Window: May 1st-31st, 2022
Payment: $.01 per word
Theme: Quiet Horror

We want quiet horror at Dread Imagings. No slashers, no zombies, no vampires, no werewolves (though transformation tales interest us). Also, no ghost stories. This last one is a personal preference. There are many fine ghost stories and authors who write them; we just don’t want them here. Stories of dread don’t need to be supernatural in nature. Think Poe. Or, better yet, think Shirley Jackson (The Lottery, The Witch), Flannery O’Conner (A Good Man Is Hard to Find, Good Country People), Ursula K. LeGuin (The Ones Who Walk Away From Omelas). Not necessarily horror fiction at all but fiction that gets under your skin. In the vein of Thomas Ligotti is always welcome.

“Exhaustion: Limited Reserves”

Chapbook – Poetry and Flash Fiction

Deadline: May 31, 2022

A common human experience is exhaustion in its many guises. Feeling used up or worn out. Reaching the limits of our personal and collective resources. Tapping out. Laying waste to the planet. Burning fuel until there’s nothing left but fumes. Covering a topic in its entirety, until everything that could be said has been said.

This chapbook will engage these and other notions of exhaustion.

Taking Submissions: Bound in Flesh: An Anthology of Trans Body Horror

Deadline: July 31st, 2022
Payment: $0.05 per word
Theme: Body Horror
Note: This anthology is only open to writers who identify as Transgender and Non-Binary.

Bound in Flesh: An Anthology of Trans Body Horror edited by Lor Gislason.

FROM THE EDITOR:

Hello, my name is Lor Gislason (they/them) and I will be the editor of BOUND IN FLESH. Body horror has been a part of my life for many years, in one way or another; From cartoons that stretch and twist characters, to personal favourites like Hellraiser and Possessor that push the human form beyond what is imaginable. While being uncomfortable with your body is not the case for all trans and NB folks, it is very common–hence why I think the genre draws so many of us to it. The cathartic nature of horror is the connective tissue that brings us together. I want to give other trans and NB authors the chance to showcase their work in a genre that so often is cis-centric, to tell their own stories and reaffirm that trans writers belong in horror.

This anthology is only open to writers who identify as Transgender and Non-Binary.

Taking Submissions: Strange Aeon: 2022

Deadline: June 30th, 2022
Payment: $20 and a contributor’s copy, or $35 for authors outside the USA
Theme: Solid stories in a cosmic horror/Lovecraftian vein
Note: Reprints welcome

Yes, we’re starting our third year. Thank you for your interest and support. The guidelines are below.

Strange Aeon: 2022 (Hopeful Monsters) is a continuation of the Strange Aeon anthology series. As always, I want good, solid stories in a cosmic horror/Lovecraftian vein.  I specifically say Lovecraftian rather than Cthulu because I’d like stories across the entire Mythos, including additions by the original group of Mythos authors like Robert Howard and Clark Ashton Smith. [1]. In fact, I’d like to use more stories that do not have specific Lovecraftian references and that move away from the traditional Lovecraft style and voice. Try to avoid pastiche and tell fresh new stories in your own settings. Style preference applies to gore and sex as well: think early Weird Tales, no excessive language or explicit sexual references.

I am especially interested in stories of mad science, monster-based horror, weird western, and stories that “peel the onion.” Indeed, I cannot emphasize strongly enough the need for these categories. Victoriana and Lovecraft era period pieces will have a much harder time finding acceptance.
