Taking Submissions: Kingdoms of Wrath and Ice (Early Listing)

Submission Window: April 1st-April 30th, 2022
Payment: $25 and a contributors copy
Theme: Tales of stone cold villains (literally on the cold!)

From castles atop snow crested mountains to the cold isolation of the frozen tundra, the lure of darkness beckons us all.

For Kingdoms of Wrath and Ice, Tourmaline & Quartz seeks your tales of stone cold villains. Show us the frosty ice queens, the conniving fae lords we love to hate and hate to love. Give us your dragons with hearts as cold as their gold, or the witch who summons a snowstorm to save herself from the hunters. Tell us about your morally gray outcasts that crave vengeance while the heroes are seeking warmth.

The winter months are dark, the snows are deep, and the ice is treacherous. But what if the bitter cold wasn’t the only villain?

Taking Submissions: Brute: Raunch, Scares, and Rough Trade

Deadline: August 1st, 2022
Payment: 5 cents a word, 1 cent per word for reprints, 2 contributor copies
Theme: dark and speculative short stories that address gay sexuality, desire, masculinity, and the aesthetics of “rough trade.”
Note: Reprints welcome

Brute is an anthology featuring dark and speculative short stories that address gay sexuality, desire, masculinity, and the aesthetics of “rough trade.” We do not want every story in the book to be so grim; if your inclination is to have your protagonist chasing a beast of a man who rapes and kills the character, please do not submit. That said, stories don’t need to end happily. The attraction to rough trade often involves a desire to embrace danger and risk the self. Because we are seeking a certain tone, we ask that before you submit your story, you query first with your details on your concept (and if you have any previous publications). We will consider reprints.

Taking Submissions: Troubadours and Space Princesses

Deadline: March 31st, 2022
Payment: Contributor’s Copy (charity anthology)
Theme: Stories of troubadours, minstrels, and bards teaming up with princesses feisty and bold. Scifi or Fantasy

Since its beginnings in the early 1980s, the Life, the Universe, & Everything Symposium has been a staple of the Utah and Intermountain West author and artist community. Many authors, artists, and editors have found inspiration for their careers at the feet of scores of symposium guests. Influential professors and others have mentored those planning and running the symposium, but many of these mentors have passed on.

The symposium helps students of all ages by providing greatly discounted student memberships. Hemelein Publications—in conjunction with LTUE Press—created a series of memorial benefit/charity anthologies to help the symposium continue to help these aspiring creators learn about their crafts at a reasonable cost. Author, artist, and editor royalty proceeds from the anthology go to LTUE to help students attend for a very low cost.
