We want to publish your speculative fiction with some type of -Punk aesthetic. Cyber-, steam-, solar-, diesel-, ray-, bio-, street-, splatter-, arcano-, nano-, or whatever else your crazed imagination can come up with. If its -Punk then it fits.
FICTION
We will accept fiction in the form of short stories and graphic stories.
Fiction should be between 1000 and 7500 words. We only accept previously unpublished stories in English. All stories should be original to the creator/submitter. No fan fiction or works set in an establish universe, unless it is of your own creation.
Graphic stories should be between 4 and 20 A4 pages and contain only original writing and art work. If your story is set in a digital manhwa format, then it should have clear page breaks very close to A4 size for publication in the quarterly ebook. We can do vertical scrolling on the site, but not in the pdf.
We will consider serials and series, but only one piece will be published per quarterly issue.
We will accept an original piece that is part of an unpublished larger whole, but only if the piece stands on its own as a story. If you are sending a piece like that then make sure that it is clear what you are submitting.
COVER ART
We will also accept art which can be used for cover art. Art submitted for covers should be at least A4 size and in full color. We will accept traditional or digital art, including photo manipulation and/or original character cosplay that fits a -punk aesthetic. Art submitted should have some blank/negative space that would be appropriate for the placement of the HyphenPunk logo, as well as the names of the authors of that issue.
All art files submitted should come in the form of a readily accessible image file (jpg, png, gif, etc.). We will gladly accept art which has been published elsewhere as long as the usage rights for it are clear.
All art submissions accepted will be offered a nonexclusive usage agreement, and the artist will keep all copyrights and usage rights. All artists submitting must understand that submitted images will have the HyphenPunk logo, as well as the names of the authors of that issue placed upon the image.
All art accepted for use as a cover image will be compensated for as laid out in Compensation section below.
REVIEWS
HyphenPunk will accept short (less than 500 word) reviews of any books, movies, games, conventions, cosplayers, artists, or any other media as long as the subject matter is some type of -punk. Reviews will only be accepted in the months of November, February, May, and August and should be about media that has been released in the past three months (i.e. since the last issue of HyphenPunk was released).
All reviews will be printed in the quarterly ebook and not on the website.
We will accept reviews that are published on your personal blogs or newsletters, but we will not be able to accept any reviews that have been published through any other magazine or website.
Submission Format
Please submit your work by email. Your fiction submission should be in .doc, .docx, or another easily readable format. Mac users, please do not submit a .pages file. We prefer to read a standard manuscript format like Shunn. Your email/cover letter does not need to include an author’s note, one will be asked for upon acceptance, but you can include it if you wish.
We will not accept multiple submissions, but we will accept simultaneous submissions of pieces you have sent to other places. If you simultaneously submit a piece to HyphenPunk and somewhere else and they accept your piece before we do, please be courteous and let us know as soon as possible.
If you have been published by HyphenPunk then please wait at least three months before submitting again.
If accepted for publication, we purchase an exclusive license for first publication for both the web and the magazine. This license is for 90 days from first publication (either on the site or in the magazine) after which all rights revert back to the author. A more detailed license agreement and contract will be provided upon acceptance.
We will not publish explicit sexual content. Any other explicit content should come with a content warning.
We will not accept any type of submission that supports or suggests any type of discrimination. No racism, sexism, homophobia, transphobia, or religious persecution. HyphenPunk believes all people are equal, and if you don’t then you can leave.
Compensation
All accepted fiction submissions will be paid a flat fee of $25. This will increase as we grow.
We are able to pay a licensing fee of $25 for cover art. We are unable to pay for interior art at this time.
We are, unfortunately, not able to pay for short reviews.
Any accepted submission will also receive a DRM-free .pdf and .epub of the quarterly ebook they appear in.
All rates are in USD$ and paid via PayPal if it is accepted for use for your country. If you live in a part of the world where PayPal is unavailable or restricted, we can also pay by WorldRemit, Wise.com, Western Union, or another system to ensure that no matter where in the world you are, we will find a way to pay you!
