Taking Submissions: Holiday Magick: An Unconventional Anthology of Holiday Stories
Deadline: June 25th, 2012 Payment: $10 advance paid upon publication, a contributor copy of the paper version, a royalty percentage split among all contributors We are looking for stories that tell alternative explanations or interpretations of the classic traditions and/or origins of holidays. Stories in the anthology will come from a variety of viewpoints, including the mythical, the magical, and the supernatural. No holiday is too small to be seen from a different perspective. Just think: Easter Egg hunts teaching survival skills to militant bunnies. A groundhog sharing his shadow to pay an ancient debt. St. Valentine creating a holiday to stave off vampire attacks. Halloween as the demons’ day off. You may think you know the truth, but you haven’t heard the real stories yet! Suggested Length: 3,000-7,000 words. Up to 10,000 words is possible, but it will be a HARD sell. Due Date: June 25, 2012 Editors: Richard Storrs and Jessica Porteous Submission Guidelines: Please email your submissions to us at [email protected] Put your story into the BODY of the email (no attachments, please!) and put "Holiday Magick" in your subject line, along with the title of your story. You are welcome to submit multiple stories; stories will be selected based on quality and on achieving a balance of holidays and story genres within the anthology. Legalese: We can only accept previously unpublished stories. Please do not use licensed characters or any trademarked or copyright-protected material without written permission in advance of submission (This is NOT the place for “A Christmas Carol for Jabba the Hutt”). We’re also not looking for stories that use holidays merely as settings, without any connection to holiday traditions. Contributor compensation will include a $10 advance paid upon publication, a contributor copy of the paper version, a royalty percentage split among all contributors,...

No reprints Story length: Up to 2500 words No multiple or simultaneous subs Deadline: 12:00am Saturday, June 30th, 2012 E-mail submissions to: [email protected] .doc attachments only. I am looking for fictional pulp action stories in an Appalachian setting. Submitted stories should harken back to the square-jawed tales of Robert E. Howard, Dashiell Hammett, and Louis L'Amour. Stories can be set in any time period, but must take place in the Appalachian region. Stories involving mountain men, moonshine runners, lawmen, heists, wrestling, soldiers, and outlaws are highly encouraged. Addition of regional history and folklore is also advised. Complex characters should be equally mixed with solid plots and high octane excitement. Submissions should avoid popular action clichés and unflattering Appalachian stereotypes. Taking Submissions: Christmas Ghost Stories Annual 2012
Deadline: June 30th 2012 Payment: Undisclosed amount and contributor's copy Cast your minds back a couple of months, to when I announced that Spectral will be publishing an annual Christmas Ghost Story anthology, starting in December 2012, in the same tradition as the annuals of the Victorian/Edwardian era. In that same blog I said I would release details of the submission process this January, and that time has duly arrived – so interested parties please read the following carefully!! Unlike the chapbooks, this is an open call for submissions from ALL authors (including those writers already published, or are due to be published, by Spectral). What we are looking for are ghostly/supernatural tales of between 5,000 and 10,000 words, set around the time of the Christmas/Mid-winter celebrations. Think of the kind of thing that MR James and Charles Dickens would have written at this time of year and you’ll be on the right track. The stories should primarily rely on atmosphere, tension, suspense, suggestion and implication to send shivers down peoples’ spines: whilst we are not averse to something of the more visceral kind (provided it works within the context of the story), we are not looking for slasher/unhinged psychopath with a sharp instrument/serial killer or gore-filled fiction. The final format or formats has/have yet to be decided. Please send submissions, in a Word attachment please, to spectralpressgmailcom, with the subject line ‘Spectral Christmas Ghost Story Annual 2012 – submission’. Please do NOT paste your story into the body of the email – if this happens then your submission will be ignored. The deadline for stories to reach us is June 30th 2012 – stories submitted after this date will not be considered. All stories must be original, with the copyright belonging to the author in question, and must not...

The story must be between 3000 and 10,000 words and should be emailed to [email protected] attached as a .doc (preferred) or .rtf Please send in your submissions using 12 font Times New Roman, single spaced, justified. Taking Submissions: The Dead Sea
Deadline: June 30th, 2012 Payment: Exposure Only Cruentus Libri Press is pleased to announce its forthcoming anthology, now open for submission. The Dead Sea is a horror anthology featuring stories set on the high seas. We are looking for tales that successfully combine this nautical setting with undead creatures from the dark recesses of your mind. WHAT WE WANT The nautical theme and the undead monsters are essential. We want to feel that sense of isolation that comes from being caught in the middle of the inhospitable ocean. We don’t care if the action takes place on an ocean liner, a life boat, an oil rig, a diving bell or anything else that you deem appropriate, so long as the comfort of terra firma is nowhere to be found. Likewise, your choice of undead can cover anything from the usual zombies, vampires and werewolves (yeah, we class them as undead here – that’s just how we roll) to ghosts, banshees and any other assorted horrors you can come up with. WHAT WE DON’T WANT Ghosts ships (a la The Flying Dutchman) and zombie pirates. We know that might come as a disappointment to you all, but they’ve been done to death (no pun intended). This is especially true in light of the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise and we fell we owe it to our readers to steer well clear. That said, you are welcome to pen stories involving ghost ships of the Mary Celeste persuasion – eerily floating vessels, bereft of human life – just avoid glowing green galleons on the horizon and we’ll be fine. This is a horror anthology intended for an adult audience. Whilst we have no qualms about including sex, violence and swearing in the stories, don’t make it gratuitous – ask yourself whether the...
Taking Submissions: Ancient Wonders
Deadline: June 30th 2012 Payment: Contributor's copy and £10.00 The Alchemy Press is seeking submissions for THE ALCHEMY PRESS BOOK OF ANCIENT WONDERS edited by Jan Edwards and Jenny Barber. Take us on a journey around the esoteric and enigmatic places that cannot fail to fire the imagination. Intrigue us, thrill us, make us wonder about the where, the what and the who. We are interested in fantasy, sf, weird and horror tales of all kinds. (No erotica, romance or poetry.) Taking Submissions: After Death
Deadline: June 30th 2012 Payment: One cent per word and one contributor copy, payable upon publication (negotiated rates for established authors). OPEN SUBMISSIONS - New Fiction Anthology: AFTER DEATH… NOW ACCEPTING SUBMISSIONS! New Fiction Anthology: AFTER DEATH… Title: After Death… Edited by: Eric J. Guignard Publisher: Dark Moon Books http://www.darkmoonbooks.com/ Submissions Due: June 30, 2012 Release Date: Spring, 2013 Send submissions and questions to: [email protected] Death. Who has not considered their own mortality and wondered at what awaits, once our frail human shell expires? What occurs after the heart stops beating, after the last breath is drawn, after life as we know it terminates? Each person has their own beliefs, whether based on science, a traditional religion, or perhaps dark, personal experimentation. Do we transcend to another dimension or celestial world? Does our spirit remain while the body rots? Are we given another opportunity to do it all over again? Can we die again in the afterlife? Do we find ways to cheat death and maintain a semblance of living after the mortician declares, D.O.A.? Do we all just end up in a cosmic purée, drunk by an Elvis Presley overlord? I am looking for stories of Horror, Dark, and Speculative Fiction, including all associated sub-genres (NO high-fantasy and limited on hard science fiction) that explore this theme: What may occur to someone AFTER they have died. Yes, this anthology will probably have stories involving demons and angels. Yes, this anthology will probably have stories of people's ghosts coming back to haunt the earth. Yes, this anthology will probably have stories of people reanimating into zombies or vampires or other traditional creatures of the night. However, these "obvious" tales will take a back seat to ideas that are much more disturbing or wildly imaginative. Think of reincarnation into another body...
