Taking Submissions: Holiday Magick: An Unconventional Anthology of Holiday Stories

Deadline: June 25th, 2012 Payment: $10 advance paid upon publication, a contributor copy of the paper version, a royalty percentage split among all contributors We are looking for stories that tell alternative explanations or interpretations of the classic traditions and/or origins of holidays. Stories in the anthology will come from a variety of viewpoints, including the mythical, the magical, and the supernatural. No holiday is too small to be seen from a different perspective. Just think: Easter Egg hunts teaching survival skills to militant bunnies. A groundhog sharing his shadow to pay an ancient debt. St. Valentine creating a holiday to stave off vampire attacks. Halloween as the demons’ day off. You may think you know the truth, but you haven’t heard the real stories yet! Suggested Length: 3,000-7,000 words. Up to 10,000 words is possible, but it will be a HARD sell. Due Date: June 25, 2012 Editors: Richard Storrs and Jessica Porteous Submission Guidelines: Please email your submissions to us at [email protected] Put your story into the BODY of the email (no attachments, please!) and put "Holiday Magick" in your subject line, along with the title of your story. You are welcome to submit multiple stories; stories will be selected based on quality and on achieving a balance of holidays and story genres within the anthology. Legalese: We can only accept previously unpublished stories. Please do not use licensed characters or any trademarked or copyright-protected material without written permission in advance of submission (This is NOT the place for “A Christmas Carol for Jabba the Hutt”). We’re also not looking for stories that use holidays merely as settings, without any connection to holiday traditions. Contributor compensation will include a $10 advance paid upon publication, a contributor copy of the paper version, a royalty percentage split among all contributors,...

Deadline: June 30th, 2012 Payment: five-cents per word (upon publication) plus contributor copy. Anthology Guidelines Title: Hills of Fire: Bare-Knuckle Yarns of Appalachia Publisher: Woodland Press Editor: Frank Larnerd Format: Trade Paperback Payment: five-cents per word (upon publication) plus contributor copy. No reprints Story length: Up to 2500 words No multiple or simultaneous subs Deadline: 12:00am Saturday, June 30th, 2012 E-mail submissions to: [email protected] .doc attachments only. I am looking for fictional pulp action stories in an Appalachian setting. Submitted stories should harken back to the square-jawed tales of Robert E. Howard, Dashiell Hammett, and Louis L'Amour. Stories involving mountain men, moonshine runners, lawmen, heists, wrestling, soldiers, and outlaws are highly encouraged. Addition of regional history and folklore is also advised. Complex characters should be equally mixed with solid plots and high octane excitement. Submissions should avoid popular action clichés and unflattering Appalachian stereotypes. Although the anthology is mainly targeted for adults, we DO NOT want stories containing language or content unsuitable for children. Accepted Manuscript Formatting: Double-spaced. Use Times New Roman (12). Italicize what you want italicized. Single space after sentence-ending punctuation. Be sure to include your name, address, and email on your manuscript.

Taking Submissions: Christmas Ghost Stories Annual 2012

Deadline: June 30th 2012 Payment: Undisclosed amount and contributor's copy Cast your minds back a couple of months, to when I announced that Spectral will be publishing an annual Christmas Ghost Story anthology, starting in December 2012, in the same tradition as the annuals of the Victorian/Edwardian era. In that same blog I said I would release details of the submission process this January, and that time has duly arrived – so interested parties please read the following carefully!! Unlike the chapbooks, this is an open call for submissions from ALL authors (including those writers already published, or are due to be published, by Spectral). What we are looking for are ghostly/supernatural tales of between 5,000 and 10,000 words, set around the time of the Christmas/Mid-winter celebrations. Think of the kind of thing that MR James and Charles Dickens would have written at this time of year and you’ll be on the right track. The stories should primarily rely on atmosphere, tension, suspense, suggestion and implication to send shivers down peoples’ spines: whilst we are not averse to something of the more visceral kind (provided it works within the context of the story), we are not looking for slasher/unhinged psychopath with a sharp instrument/serial killer or gore-filled fiction. The final format or formats has/have yet to be decided. Please send submissions, in a Word attachment please, to spectralpressgmailcom, with the subject line ‘Spectral Christmas Ghost Story Annual 2012 – submission’. Please do NOT paste your story into the body of the email – if this happens then your submission will be ignored. The deadline for stories to reach us is June 30th 2012 – stories submitted after this date will not be considered. All stories must be original, with the copyright belonging to the author in question, and must not...

The story must be between 3000 and 10,000 words and should be emailed to [email protected] attached as a .doc (preferred) or .rtf Please send in your submissions using 12 font Times New Roman, single spaced, justified.
