Submit your work for our 2020 edition, ‘Mental’
What is ‘mental’? Does it solely refer to the inner workings of the mind? Is it an exclamation attached to an extraordinary occurrence, or inherently tied to mental health? How has the word affected humanity throughout history? How does the label ‘mental’ entwine, enrich or even damage one’s sense of self? Can the word be reclaimed from its loaded history? 

At Antithesis this year, we’re keen to know your thoughts on your thoughts. It is our mission to feature raw, diverse voices that uniquely illuminate the trials and wonders of the human condition. We want to learn of your quirks, of your ‘plights and gripes, as bad as Achilles’. Why do we say and do as we say and do, and how much control do we truly have over our minds?

How can ‘madness’ be defined as we enter this new decade, denial and toilet rolls abound? 

Tell us. We want to know. What is mental in your mind?

Important info:

• Nothing you submit can have been previously published in any form. While we’re happy to consider works that have been sent to other journals, we ask you to please let us know well in advance if any work you have submitted to Antithesis has been accepted elsewhere for publication.
• We accept submissions via Submittable only, and only from people based in Australia. Living overseas? Send us a pitch first to [email protected].
• We also strongly recommend you pitch us your idea first. Pitching guidelines can be found on our website.
• We encourage submissions from writers and creatives who are queer and/or trans and/or of any colour, religion, age, ability or gender. You do not need to be a student at the University (or at all!) to be published in the journal. We welcome submissions from writers and artists both established and emerging.
• We offer $50 for each contributor published in the journal, as well as a copy of the final publication.

Submitting to the journal:

What we’re looking for:

• Creative writing (short fiction, creative nonfiction, personal essay) up to 5,000 words
• Reviews (books, films, exhibitions, performances, etc.) up to 5,000 words
• Scholarly research articles up to 7,500 words
• Poetry up to 100 lines
• Artwork (paintings, drawings, photography, digital art, comic art, graphic narrative, etc.)

While we do ask that all submissions be in line with our theme, ‘Mental’, we welcome different interpretations on that theme.

Technicalities:

• Written works should be submitted as Microsoft Word (.doc, .docx) files
• Artwork must be submitted in CMYK colour, at least 300dpi in JPG or EPS files that don’t exceed 3MB. Note that artwork should be shrinkable to our 8″ tall x 5.25″ wide pages (these measurements already allow for a small border) Please be mindful that the journal is not A4 sized. Each vertical page has the following specs: 189mm width x 246mm height.
• Research articles will be double-blind refereed before publication. Reviews, creative writing, poetry and artwork will not be refereed. However, all work relating to the lived experience of mental illness will be reviewed by a lived experience sensitivity readership panel from SANE Australia prior to print.
• All submissions should be accompanied by a biography (150 words maximum) and research articles should also include an abstract (300 words maximum). Biographies should include your name, where you’re from, your studies, writing/research interests, if you’ve been published before and an interesting witticism about yourself.

Submissions close 11:59PM Sunday 31st May 2020.  If we reach our maximum number of submissions, we may need to close earlier than scheduled.

Submitting to the blog:

Submissions for the Antithesis blog are also made through Submittable.

Although we would love to see work related to our theme, ‘Mental’, this is not a requirement for blog submissions.

What we’re looking for:

• Current cultural critique and commentary (highly encouraged)
• Creative nonfiction
• Short fiction
• Poetry
• Reviews (books, films, exhibitions, performances, etc.)
• Artwork (paintings, drawings, photography, digital art, comic art, graphic narrative, etc.)

Technicalities:

• Written submissions should be 1200 words or under and submitted as Microsoft Word (.doc, .docx) files.
• Artwork must be sent in CMYK colour, at least 300dpi in JPG or EPS files that don’t exceed 3MB.
• Please note that we prefer reviews and articles that are timely and topical to be published on the blog rather than in the publication to ensure we are publishing relevant content.
• All submissions should be accompanied by a biography (150 words maximum) and research articles should also include an abstract (300 words maximum). Biographies should include your name, where you’re from, your studies, writing/research interests, if you’ve been published before and an interesting witticism about yourself.

Fiction

• This section accepts short fiction pieces up to 3,000 words.
• Written works should be submitted as Microsoft Word (.doc, .docx) files.
• The theme of Antithesis Volume 30 is ‘mental’, intending to explore a multitude of experience and critical thought related to the concept. It is our mission to publish raw, diverse voices that push boundaries and encourage critical thought around the definition of ‘mental’. We will not consider any work that perpetuates negative stereotypes, or stigmatises mental illness and those living with mental health challenges.
• All submissions should be accompanied by an author biography (150 words maximum) including your name, where you’re from, your studies, writing interests and where you may have been published before.
• While we’re happy to consider works that have been sent to other journals, we ask you to please let us know well in advance if any works you have submitted to Antithesis have been accepted elsewhere for publication.

Poetry

• Poetry is limited up to 100 lines. If submitting multiple poems, each poem must be submitted separately. Submitters are allowed to submit up to three poems.
• Written works should be submitted as Microsoft Word (.doc, .docx) files.
• The theme of Antithesis Volume 30 is ‘mental’, intending to explore a multitude of experience and critical thought related to the concept. It is our mission to publish raw, diverse voices that push boundaries and encourage critical      thought around the definition of ‘mental’.
