Writers Guidelines

We accept new work as well as reprints, anywhere from 1000 word flash fiction on up, but as we are just starting, shorter pieces will be favored. We have tough standards but only care about the quality of the writing, characters, plot, and ideas, not whether you’re new or established.  Only submit finished work you are proud of.  Commensurate with the time available, if we don’t accept your submission we’ll explain why.

We are following the Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers of America (SFWA) guidelines; after one year of meeting their criteria they will retroactively qualify us as a pro site and new work printed during that year will count towards a writer’s SWFA qualifications.  We pay 6¢ per word for new fiction, and 2¢ per word for reprints and fact-based work.

Fiction

We are looking for well written original stories in science fiction, fantasy, myth, legend, fairy tales, and eldritch, in written, podcast, video, and/or graphic story form, and from around the world.  We’re accept both serious and humorous work. We like science fiction in all its states of matter, from solid to gaseous to plasma, i.e., from hard as steel to as insubstantial as interstellar space.  If you use real existing science, please get it right.

We’re not looking for angsty romance, fanfics*, horror, hate, blood & guts, excessive violence, sex, axe-grinding, or stories that leave readers feeling they’ve had the energy and joy sucked out of them.

Fact

We are looking for fact-based articles, interesting information, reviews, and humor in any discipline that relates to the type of stories we publish or might provide inspiration and information for writers and artists.

Artwork and Other Imagery

We’re looking for storytelling through images.  We want to see skillful composition, use of color, rendering of form, character, and emotions.   For photo manipulations or photography using models, etc., all stock and resources used must be credited and used according to the stock provider’s rules.

We are not presently commissioning any work.  We are looking only for already existing work for use on site pages or for illustrating stories.  We pay $10 for the non-exclusive right to use each image, for as long as the site is online.  If we publish a print collection we will pay a pro-rata share for each image used.

Just as for written works, we’re not looking for romance, fan art*, hate, horror, blood & guts, excessive violence, sex, nudity, copies of photographs, propaganda, or work that leave readers feeling they’ve had the energy and joy sucked out of them.  We do not accept work using materials that required the death or mistreatment of animals.

*If the original work is still in copyright and was not commissioned or sanctioned by the creator or owner we will not accept it.  Some fan art is accepted or encouraged by the copyright owners — e.g., cosplay, and these works we welcome.
An illustration of a fairy tale, myth, legend, old classic, or any work no longer in copyright would not be counted as fan art.

No simultaneous submissions, and no multiple submissions to the same genre.  Please include title, medium, size, and any remarks relevant to the work’s creation.

Submit text in .doc and images as a jpg or through a link.  Provide links to all stock used.  For video, if possible send links, and have it available in both MP4 and WEBM formats for compatibility across all browsers.

On the submissions page, remember to check that you agree with the terms of our guidelines before you submit.

Interstellar submitters please use standard Earth formats or query in advance for other arrangements.  We’d love to be the first to publish your work here on Earth!

After reading our guidelines you can enter the submissions page here

Ongoing Submissions: Sub-saharan Magazine

Payment: 1¢ per word for up to 1000 words, $10 flat for stories above that, and $5 for any piece below 500 words.
Reprints Allowed at a lower pay (read below)

Before you submit to us, endeavour to follow our website, like our Facebook page, and follow us on twitter. We make this a criterion, for now, because we are a new market and we hope our network mushrooms with your support.

WHAT WE WANT

SHORT STORY/FLASH FICTION:
Although we have a soft spot for submissions by Africans, we welcome stories from the rest of the world if they present Africa in a Fantasy, science fiction, or horror setting or with speculative elements. The characters in such stories mustn’t be blacks. In fact, if making your characters black is the only African attribute in your story, then it is probably not for us. We want you to dive into rare African cultures and traditions, tweak them to your taste and sprinkle magic and futuristic science over them. Then serve them to us in a platter made of an unusual and fluid voice, a well-defined plot, characters that are larger than life, dry humour, and imageries that leave their imprints in our minds long after we finish devouring them.

LENGTH:
We consider stories up to 2000 words, but we prefer to see ones between 100 and 1000 words. Anything above 2000 words will be rejected.

PAYMENT:
For Nigerian authors, we pay N2 per word for up to 1000 words, N2000 flat for stories above that, and N1000 for anything below 500 words.

For authors from the rest of the world, we pay 1¢ per word for up to 1000 words, $10 flat for stories above that, and $5 for any piece below 500 words.

We pay on publication via PayPal or with Amazon Gift Cards for foreign authors. For Nigerian authors, we pay via bank transfer or MTN/Airtel/Etisalat recharge vouchers.

RIGHTS:
We buy the right to exclusively publish your piece on our website and in our quarterly Anthology. Most rights revert back to the author after six month of the piece appearing on our website. However, we will retain nonexclusive rights to continue selling the issue of our Anthology in which your piece appeared and to keep the piece in our archive.

HOW TO SUBMIT:
Submit your work as a DOC, DOCX, or RTF attachment to magazinesubsaharan@gmail.com with “Story Submission: Your Story Title” as the subject of the email. Please, the attached manuscript must be in standard manuscript format. Any story that isn’t properly formatted will be rejected. The same goes for stories that don’t follow the guidelines.

POETRY:
We want your poems of up to forty lines. Anything above that will be rejected. We prefer our poems dark, speculative, and humorous. Please no romantic poems, unless it’s about a date with a murderous alien on a poisonous planet where you end up dying by either throttling or sheer asphyxiation before you could write the poem.

Please use “Poetry Submission: You Poem Title” as the subject of your email.

We pay $5 flat for each accepted poem.

REPRINTS:
We occasionally accept story reprints. Therefore, if you are submitting a story for reprint, you must include “reprint” in the subject of your email in this format: “Reprint Submission: Story Title”. Also include where and when the story was first published in the body of the email.

We do not accept poetry reprints.

We pay $5 flat for accepted reprints between 500 and 5000 words.

ARTWORK:
We accept unsolicited artwork. Your artwork must be attached in JPEG or PGN format, and the file size should be no more than 5mb. Use “Artwork Submission: Your artwork title” as the subject of your email.

We pay between $5 and $10 for artwork, depending on the quality and how much we love it.

MULTIPLE AND SIMULTANEOUS SUBMISSIONS:
Please no multiple submissions. We, however, don’t mind simultaneous submissions, provided that you alert us if your piece is accepted elsewhere.

RESPONSE TIME:
We try to respond to all submissions in two weeks. However, if you haven’t heard from us in a month, do query via the email magazinesubsaharan@gmail.com with “Query: Your Piece Title” as the subject. In the body of your email, include the date and type of submission.

ALERTS:

  1. Open Office or Libre Office users:  Due to an incompatibility issue, when an Open Office or Libre Office file is converted to a .doc file the last line of text disappears in our Submittable Document Viewer.  To prevent this from happening to your story, PLEASE add a blank line at the end of your story by hitting ‘Enter’ after the last line.  For good measure, add ‘END’ followed by a blank line.
  2. Please do not use Flash Fiction Online to fulfill school assignments.

SFWA Qualification

Publication in Flash Fiction Online counts toward the requirements for membership in the Science Fiction Writers of America (SFWA).
Although the SFWA recognizes this magazine as a professional market, we frequently publish literary fiction and other genres.

Payment and Rights

As of September 30, 2019, we pay eighty dollars ($80) per story for original fiction. Original fiction means ‘previously unpublished.’  This payment provides us with first electronic rights, including HTML, PDF, plain text, and MP3 (audio) formats. Distribution will be through the Flash Fiction Online website and a variety of other electronic means, including but not exclusively epub, mobi, and pdf. This payment also provides us with a non-exclusive one-time right to publish the stories in an anthology. For reprints, we pay $.02 (two cents) per word for non-exclusive rights.

All other rights for the work remain with the author.

Ongoing Submissions: Escape Pod Podcast

escape-pod

Payment: $0.06 per word for original fiction; $0.03 per word for reprints
Note: Obviously your horror here will require a large science fiction slant

Escape Pod publishes in both text and audio; you are offering both of those one-time and archival rights to us when you send us your story. Escape Pod is a science fiction market. Our mandate is fun. We are fairly flexible on what counts as “science” (as we’ll delve into superheroes or steampunk on occasion) and are interested in exploring the range of the genre, but we are not looking for fantasy, magical realism, or more than a tinge of horror. If your story isn’t centered on science, technology, future projections, alternate history, and how any or all of these things intersect with people, we’re probably not the right market for it.

Diversity: Escape Pod welcomes submissions from writers of all backgrounds. We are especially interested in seeing more submissions from people of backgrounds that have been historically underrepresented or excluded from traditional SF publishing, including, but not limited to, women, people of color, LGBTQ or non-binary gender people, persons with disabilities, members of religious minorities, and people from outside the United States. Our goal is to publish science fiction that reflects the diversity of the human race, so we strongly encourage submissions from these or any other underrepresented groups.

Wordcount: 2000-6000 words (firm)
We publish short-form fiction more or less exclusively. We are not interested in flash fiction, poetry, serialized fiction, or novel excerpts. As with other genres, we support their existence, but they’re not what we do.

Payment: $0.06 per word for original fiction; $0.03 per word for reprints
We are an SFWA qualifying market for original fiction and pay professional rates.

Format: Paste your story in plaintext into the body of an e-mail and send it to us with the subject line “Fiction Submission: [TITLE].” (This will help avoid overzealous spamcatchers.) Include a short note with your name, an address where you can be contacted/paid, the story’s title and wordcount, and (if it is a reprint) any venues where it has previously appeared.

Where to Send: submit AT escapepod DOT org
See you there!

Art Submissions

If you wish to have your art considered for Ares, please send an inquiry, along with a link to an online gallery (if possible). Please include the artwork’s name and its pixel definition in your email.

We generally only purchase pre-existing pieces of art. We will contact you if we wish to commission original art.

We pay $300 or more for quality cover art (full-page) and up to $30 per page for interior art. Smaller pieces pay proportionally.

What We’re Looking For

When Ares is open to fiction submissions, we are looking for stories in the genres listed above.

What We’re NOT Looking For

Ares is not a market for fiction based upon the copyright-protected works of others. We will review fiction based upon the work of others, provided that the work is no longer copyrighted.

Ares is not seeking poetry or erotica. Real life includes poetic and erotic elements, so your story can as well, if it supports the plot.

Reprints, Simultaneous Submissions, and Multiple Submissions

We do accept reprint submissions. Please note, however, we are only interested in considering stories for reprint that are not available online or in any currently-purchasable form.

We don’t accept simultaneous submissions. Please do not submit works that are under consideration elsewhere.

We don’t accept multiple submissions. Please wait for a resolution of one submission before making the next.

Fiction Length

  • Minimum: 1,000 words
  • Maximum: 10,000 words
  • Preferred: 4,000 to 6,000 words

Fiction Rates

Our standard rate for the first digital and print publishing rights is $0.06 per word for original fiction.

Our standard rate for reprints is $0.02 per word.

Game Submissions

We publish a unique game in every issue of Ares. Like everything else, game submissions should align with the genre list above.

For game submissions, include the game’s name, a one sentence description, and a required component list in the body of your email.

For game expansions, modifications, and scenarios, include the name of the base game and a brief description of the submission in the body of your email.

Game design inquiries should be directed to [email protected]

Game Designs

Each game submission is evaluated individually for completeness, quality, and designer’s pedigree. Contract prices typically range from $1,000 to $2,000 based primarily upon these considerations.

We expect game designs to be complete, developed, and playtested before submission.

As for content, we expect to allocate one letter-size sheet of die-cut playing pieces, one 17” x 22” map, and eight to sixteen pages for rules. There is some flexibility here – ask us if you have a design with somewhat different requirements.

Game Expansion, Modification, and Scenario Submissions

Ares includes a limited amount of game scenario material for use with previously published games. One Small Step Games must possess the rights to publish this material. If these can’t be easily acquired, we will have to reject the submission.

Nonfiction Submissions

Non-fiction should be related to any of our preferred genres, with a preference for pieces that focus on the future and its implications.

We do not take reprint submissions for non-fiction.

Please send non-fiction submissions as an attachment to [email protected].

Non-fiction Length

1,500 to 6,000 words

Non-fiction Rates

Our standard rate for the first digital and print publishing rights is $0.06 per word for original non-fiction.
