Bruce McAllister & his new anthology “Stealing God”

Bruce McAllister & his new anthology “Stealing God”

By Angelique Fawns

It’s rare I “hero-worship” another writer, but it when it comes to Bruce McAllister, I am definitely star-struck. McAllister is a Hugo and Nebula nominated science fiction and fantasy writer. My first taste of his genius was the imaginative telling of an alien assassin “Kin” on actor Levar Burton’s podcast Levar Burton Reads.

Issac Asimov himself says, “Bruce McAllister is one of the greatest talents working in the science fiction field today.”

He was the guest speaker at my January 9th, 2022 DreamCasters’ writing meeting and he shared the secrets of good writing with us. In my opinion, every word that dropped from his mouth was a nugget of pure gold.

McAllister has recently released a short story collection, Stealing God and Other Stories. Each tale is touched with magic, love, and drew me in completely.

He kindly agreed to chat with me about his anthology, writing process, and career. He even drops a few priceless pieces of advice for authors.

Today, Angelique joins us with the second week of September 2022’s Market Round Up!

Hello everyone!

While Belinda is away, we have a rotating set of hosts to share our latest favorite paying markets for writers to share with you. Today, we’re joined by one of our most active interviewers, Angelique Fawns!

We’re halfway through September, and Spooky Season has kicked off! While some might try to save Halloween just for the month of October (or even just the 31st,) we believe that they’re wrong. Much like Christmas for some, this is a holiday that needs months to truly savor. This week’s round-up is short but sweet and I think you’ll enjoy them!

Now, to show off some of our favorite open calls from the week:

Ty Drago: An Author’s Journey and ALLEGORY

Ty Drago: An Author’s Journey and ALLEGORY

By Angelique Fawns

Ty Drago has been writing fantastic fiction and creating a home for speculative short stories for almost 25 years. With the recent release of his latest YA novel RAGS, and a career shift to full-time writing, Drago opens up about the next chapter of his life.

You can check out his new novel here:

In my own personal writing journey, ALLEGORY ezine has been a beacon of hope and encouragement. I’ve been submitting to this biannual speculative fiction market since 2018.  ALLEGORY sent me several personalized rejections which were thoughtful and encouraging. Four years later, I finally sold them my slipstream fantasy “The Guanche, the Iguana, and the Kidnapping of Anita Brown.”

Ai Jiang: thoughtful writing & selling stories

Ai Jiang: thoughtful writing & selling stories

By Angelique Fawns

Ai Jiang is no stranger to the world of speculative short story writing. Her tales can be found in some of the most respected markets in our industry including: The Magazine of Fantasy & Science Fiction, Uncanny, The Dark Magazine, Pseudopod, The Deadlands, and Dark Matter. She mixes the literary with speculative elements and her writing has a unique, vibrant flavor. Jiang is studying her craft by pursuing a Master’s in Creative Writing at the University of Edinburgh and works as a fiction editor at Orion’s Belt. (A pro-paying market for flash fiction.)

I discovered this prolific Canadian-Chinese writer through our very own Horrortree newsletter written by Holley Cornetto. She featured Ai Jiang’s story For Viporis” at Flashpoint Science Fiction, and I loved it so much I contacted Jiang to find out more about her.

Today We’re Talking To Filipe Lichtenheld On Dream of Shadows

Filipe Lichtenheld & Dream of Shadows

By Angelique Fawns

Filipe Lichtenheld loves honest and daring stories that exist in the grey zone. Send him your stories of struggle, moments of horror, and flashes of fantasy. Launched in 2019, Dream of Shadows is based out of London, England, and publishes monthly short stories and annual anthologies. I’ve sent several submissions to this market and Lichtenheld has always taken the time to send me a few notes on how to improve my writing. I took his advice to heart and finally sent him a story he accepted. “Ogri Trips the Light Fantastic” will be published on the Dream of Shadows website on November 15, 2022.

Dream of Shadows is also running a Halloween Contest this year from August 1 to September 15, so if you have a short spooky tale looking for a home, check out the website for more details. This August you can also find the annual anthology for sale on Amazon. I sat down with Lichtenheld to learn more about his vision and what lurks in the shadows…

William Joesph Roberts: It Came From the Trailer Park

William Joesph Roberts: It Came From the Trailer Park

By Angelique Fawns

The Trailer Park Boys, Ozark, My Name is Earl, Raising Arizona….

Trailer parks in pop-culture are endlessly fascinating. The success of Three Ravens Publishing’s anthology, It Came From the Trailer Park, is no exception. It was so well-received (top of the Amazon charts) they are creating a volume 2. The guidelines ask for “original creature feature, horror-comedy with the same feel as The Evil Dead, Army of Darkness, and Shaun of the Dead…”  Who doesn’t love heroes winning the day in redneck glory? I sat down with the brainchild behind these books to learn more.
