WIHM 2022: An Interview With Editor Rebecca Rowland

In celebration of Women in Horror Month, we are continuing to highlight some of the amazing work that women have been doing compiling and editing magazines and story collections in the horror industry. We’re continuing our Women Who Edit Interview series with Rebecca Rowland.

Could you introduce yourself, and tell us a little about you?

Hi! My name is Rebecca Rowland, and I write and curate dark fiction. By day, I teach high school English in a large, urban district, and I really like my students. I like to think of my role as an author/ghostwriter/editor as my superhero identity: it’s not something I necessarily promote in my day life, but people seem intrigued (slash, surprised) when they do learn of it. Also, the wardrobe is much more comfortable than my day job’s. 😊

  1. You grew up in Kentucky but studied in California.  How have these different backdrops influenced your writing?

 

Kentucky has always been my home—I moved here at two months old and have spent the majority of my life here. Living in California gave me a taste of somewhere far different from my usual, and it was utterly gorgeous—I’m grateful for the experience. If anything, I hope it helped broaden my range with respect to characters and landscape. I met a lot of amazing folks out there and everyone left their mark on my life, and therefore my writing. I think Kentucky will always be the biggest influence, though. My work is riddled with bourbon and southern quirks, and there’s a rich vein of love for my home state in most of what I do.

Oh, what a loaded question to start with, haha! The horror community means a great deal to me, and over the last five years, has become a big part of my life. Although it hasn’t always been sunshine and rainbows, overall I would say that my experience has been crucial to finding a lot of the inner strength I think I lacked before.

  1. What does it mean to be a woman in horror?

 

First, being a woman in horror means being part of a community. I have found a supportive and encouraging group of women who have helped me so much in my career. But women in horror need a community. We have a unique perspective and can help each other navigate the gatekeeping that is unfortunately sometimes part of working in the genre. It’s part of why I’ve worked hard with NYX Horror Collective to create opportunities for women, like our Stowe Story Labs fellowship for women over 40. It’s not just the gender gap that we are working against, but ageism too. We have come a long way, mostly because of the supportive community, but we still have a long way to go. Often, I feel as if I have to work twice as hard to get the same amount of recognition. I’m sure I’m not alone in that feeling.

  1. As you are in the middle of publishing The Ancient Ones trilogy, how has the world you’ve created evolved over time?

 

I actually came up with the idea for The Ancient Ones when I was sixteen, and it took until I was thirty to finally sit down and write it out. I finished it within a year, then I finished the next two the following year. So from the completion of one to three, nothing changed very much, but from sixteen to thirty, incredibly so. As an undergrad, I majored in History with a concentration in mythology, so the more I learned, the more I wanted to include in my stories.

Ruschelle: Today in the darkest part of the Horror Tree Forest we welcome author D.T. Neal who released the third book in the Wolfshadow trilogy, Norm, this past October 31 from Nosetouch Press.  A Halloween baby!  But a scant month before Neal rolled out the blood red carpet his re-vamped edition of Suckage. Great works from an author to be plucked from Amazon and Barnes and Noble! Before we wrestle with the werewolf let’s discuss your fresh bloodletting of Suckage. What made you decide to re-release it on the unsuspecting public? 

D.T.: I love vampires! When I first wrote SUCKAGE, people were still suffering from a very TWILIGHT-infused cultural hangover. I wrote that book as a reaction to the trend of sparkly vampires at the time. Now that what I would consider toothless vampires have come and gone, the time seemed right to exhume SUCKAGE and let it afflict a new bunch of readers. For me, it’s a very Gen X kind of vampire novel, mixing dark humor with horror.
