Star*Line is the official print journal of the SFPA, established in 1978. It is a literary venue for speculative (including science-fiction, fantasy, and horror) poets and poetry enthusiasts, and features interviews, articles, reviews, member news and letters, association business, and poetry—by members and nonmembers.

Meet the Editor
Jean-Paul Garnier
 assumed the editorial mantle as of issue 44.3. He lives and writes in Joshua Tree, CA where he is the owner of Space Cowboy Books, a science-fiction bookstore, independent publisher, and producer of Simultaneous Times podcast. In 2020 his first novella Garbage In, Gospel Out was released, and in 2018 Traveling Shoes Press released Echo of Creation, a collection of his science-fiction short stories. He has also released several collections of poetry: Future Anthropology (currently being translated into Portuguese), Odes to Scientists (2019), Betelgeuse Dimming (2020), and Utopian Problems (2021). He is a five-time Elgin Nominee and also appeared in the 2020 Dwarf Stars anthology. He is a regular contributor to‘s blog and short-story editor at Aphelion.

About Star*Line
In January 1978, Suzette Haden Elgin founded the Science Fiction Poetry Association, along with its two visible cornerposts: the Rhysling Awards and the association’s newsletter, Star*LineStar*Line has become not only an SFPA forum and networking tool, but a literary magazine for poets of the genre persuasion: imaginative poetry from hard science fiction to high fantasy, from the macabre to straight science, and from rigid formalism to experimental and surrealist works.

NB: A Star*Line subscription includes four quarterly issues of Star*Line. It does not include the annual Rhysling Anthology, Dwarf Stars, SFPA nominating or voting rights or the other benefits of full SFPA membership. For full membership, join here.

To order a copy or to subscribe
All prices are in U.S. funds. Please note that we no longer accept check payments (or pay Star*Line contributors via check) except in extenuating or special circumstances—complete lack of regular internet access, restrictive economic and / or life situation, etc.  Please email the Treasurer at [email protected] directly if this is the case.

All payments should be made via PayPal to [email protected]. In order to pay for membership, you do not need to have a PayPal account, as credit card payments are accepted through PayPal. However, if you become a Star*Line contributor, to receive payments, you will need one.

Note that we cover PayPal fees so that they will not be deducted from Star*Line contributor payments for poems accepted and published!

Star*Line subscription is included with SFPA membership.

 is published quarterly. The issue with which the subscription expires is printed on the mailing label. Star*Line is saddle-stitched, 5.5″ x 8.5″, with a cardstock cover, and is now also available as a .pdf.

Advertising Rates
Ad space in Star*Line is now available for any enterprise directly connected with speculative poetry. Per issue: $90/full page (4.5″w x 7.5″h); $50/half-page (4.5″w x 3.75″h); $30/quarter-page (2.25″w x 3.75″h)0.

Submit no more than five poems per submission. Do not send multiple submissions. Paste into body of e-mail (attach .doc or .rtf only in case of very unusual format). No previously published poems. Check this page for more detailed submission guidelines as well as some of the editor’s pet peeves.

Reading Periods
Star*Line is open for submissions year-round. Allow two weeks for response.

The SFPA pays on publication for First North American Serial Rights and First Electronic Rights. Editor’s Choice poems may be selected to appear on the SFPA website and are archived there. Subsidiary rights revert to the author on publication. Payment for poetry: 4¢/word rounded to next dollar, minimum $4. One copy to all contributors.

 accepts short articles on topics related to science-fiction, fantasy, and horror speculative poetry. Space (within Star*Line, at any rate) is limited; payment is 1¢/word rounded to the next dollar. Submit as .doc or .rtf only.

Review copies sought
All books, chapbooks, anthologies, or collections containing or related to poetry within the SF/F/H/spec genres may be sent to the editor by either snail- or e-mail and will be considered for review. Unsolicited book reviews welcome. Submit reviews via e-mail only. E-mail the editor if interested in writing reviews. Excerpts only will appear in Star*Line. Full reviews will appear in the Reviews section of the site. Flat fee of $4.00.

Submit art work as 300-dpi .jpgs or .tifs to editor, or send link to online portfolio. Cover pays $10 plus 10 copies; interior art pays $5. Color art for covers will be considered; the print issue interiors are black-and-white, but use of color is unlimited in the .pdf.

E-mail submissions (strongly preferred) to [email protected]. Please put “S*L sub” and last name in subject line. Postal submissions with SASE accepted only if you have no e-mail—postal submissions that include an e-mail address will be torn up into small pieces and danced upon. No IRCs; SASE not required for international postal submissions or from those incarcerated.
