Taking Submissions: New Horrors

Deadline: July 1st, 2016 Payment: A set net percentage royalty. We’re looking for stories. Scary stories! Stories that get under the skin. Stories that stay with you and come back to haunt you once the lights go off. We’re looking for new horrors. 21st Century horrors that reflect the way we live now. We want you to reinvent the genre – reimagine the nightmare. And the modern world isn’t short of inspiration. …sorry, it’s hard not to get dramatic when thinking of horror fiction. Fun though! I’m sure you get it – horror, but make it new. Though we’re not afraid of you conjuring the old masters for a bit of help. Dead Ink will publish New Horrors as a series of subscription eBooks, so we want stories between 5,000 and 30,000 words in length. Short-to-long stories. Authors will be paid with a set net percentage royalty. We may also anthologise the series as a print book in the future. Submissions are open world-wide, but they must be in the English language and must not have been previously published. We encourage everyone to enter and we especially like to see submissions from individuals and communities who feel that they may be under-represented or marginalised. The series is also open to both emerging and established authors. To send your work simply attach it to an email to [email protected] and include “New Horrors” in the subject headline. Please include a short author bio with your entry too. Entries close on the 1st of July. Via:

Taking Submissions: Electric Spec August Issue 2016

Deadline: July 15, 2016 Payment: $20 Please don't query us about your story submission. We don't have the manpower to answer such queries. An editor will email you back as soon as possible with the decision about your story. This can take a few days, or, up to three months. We make every effort to get back to authors in a timely manner but we get a lot of submissions so sometimes it's not possible. A note on our editorial policy: before publication we may edit the story for length or readability. However, we always remain true to the spirit of the story. Issues are published at the end of February, May, August, and November. Please do not submit the same story more than once, and please submit only one story at a time. We consider any story between 250 and 7000 words with speculative fiction elements. We prefer science fiction, fantasy, and the macabre, but we're willing to push the limits of traditional forms of these genres. We do not consider poetry, stories with over-the-top sex or violence, serials, novels, fan fiction, or non-fiction. We don't accept multiple submissions; in other words, only submit one story at a time and wait for a response before submitting another. We accept simultaneous submissions as long as you let us know up front and tell us as soon as it's accepted elsewhere. We do not publish reprints, including anything that has appeared on a website. We pay $20 for each story we publish. We buy first-printing world exclusive rights for four months. Payment will be made shortly after publication using PayPal. We encourage our authors to establish a PayPal account if they don't already have one. We prefer to read submissions in traditional manuscript format. Deadline: July 15th, 2016 Payment: $0.01USD per word Helios Quarterly Magazine aims to publish quality fiction, poetry, non-fiction, and art that illuminates the darkness. HQM wants stories and poems that grab a hold of reader from the opening lines all the way to the finish line. Works that push boundaries, are succinct, and well developed are smiled upon. READING PERIODS* January 1-15 11:59PM EST (March Issue) April 1-15 11:59PM EST (June Issue) July 1-15 11:59PM EST (September Issue) October 1-15 11:59PM EST (December Issue) Anything submitted outside of these windows will be deleted unread. Artists and photographers can submit year round. *Effective October 2016 CURRENT ISSUE Miscommunication is key to conflict. In the realm of science fiction there’s been the urge to gloss over language with universal translators, or the dominance of the English language far into the future. In horror, communication is largely an issue with supernatural entities and cellphones without service. In fantasy literature, where whole new languages take form, the topic of not being able to read and write let alone speak more than one is rare. In the midst of terror, war, and in critical situations, not being able to communicate can mean the difference between life and death. Center your work around how language (or the lack therefore) is central to an issue within the plot, etc. Open to submit between June 1-June 30th 11:59PM EST FICTION, POETRY & NON-FICTION IDEAS A mute bounty hunter discovers a parasitic monster that has shut down communication between the crew and outside world Ghost hunters must find a way to communicate with a spirit through signs and symbols in an abandoned house How does it feel to be the last being to speak your language in the whole universe? Two alien children discover an injured human being but, have not been fitted with...

Taking Submissions: Tales of the Once and Future King

Deadline: July 16, 2016 Payment: Pro Rata depending on the number of stories accepted – an equal percentage of royalties will be split Submission Period: May 16, 2016 – July 16, 2016 We will accept .doc and .docx submissions ONLY Only standard manuscript format accepted Payment: Pro Rata depending on the number of stories accepted – an equal percentage of royalties will be split Word Count: Anywhere between 500-10,000 words Poetry WILL be considered Send stories to [email protected] E-mail subject: SUBMISSIONS/Story Title Calling all writers! As of today, I am opening up submissions to a new anthology: “Tales of the Once and Future King”. This will be an anthology of juvenile stories about King Arthur and all things Arthurian related. Juvenile is a broad term that can mean anything from a “Chronicles of Narnia” reading level to the later Harry Potter books. The guidelines are very broad. Since it’s juvenile: No sex No unnecessary gore No nihilism HOWEVER – “juvenile” is not the same as “sanitized”. So: There CAN be romance There CAN be fighting Things CAN get dark We don’t want to see stories that talk down to children. Children are young, not morons. No stories that insult the Arthurian tradition. This means nothing like “And King Arthur was really a BAD King and later scribes changed it!” or “Chivalry is sexist and horrible and the knights were all misogynist pigs”. This is one that’s more on our end than yours – if you think it might work, submit it, and we’ll see what we think. Stories that insult Christianity probably won’t be accepted. I have no problem if you’re more interested in things like Druidic mysticism or Paganism than Christianity, it’s just flat-out insults I’m not really interested in. Once again, if you’re not sure, submit it and we’ll make...

Taking Submissions: Swords & Steam and Dystopia Utopia

Deadline: July 22nd, 2016 Payment: 6 cents per word Note: Usually I wouldn't double up but with these both coming from the same publisher and ending SOON I wanted to get a post up. UPDATE: SUBMISSIONS are now OPEN for Swords & Steam and Dystopia Utopia.  Following the great success of last year’s Gothic Fantasy, Deluxe edition short story compilations, Ghosts,Horror and Science Fiction, 2016 sees the publication of four new books. Submissions are now open and will close on 22nd July for the second two: Swords & Steam and Dystopia Utopia We need between twenty to thirty short stories by new writers to complement a selection of classic tales. Submit by email to [email protected] What’s the difference between the books? Swords & Steam covers any form of historical fantasy and steampunk flavoured mystery, horror, crime and sf. From Walter Scott to Dr Who, Legend to Prester John. Dystopia Utopia focuses on stories which offer perfect worlds gone wrong, or imperfect worlds with perfect people, Somewhere between Sir Thomas More’s Utopia, Mad Max and The Hunger Games gives you the taste and the breadth. Accentuating the Printed Form Last year’s titles speak for themselves (see here). Still available they work because their unusual mix of modern and classic writing, combined with the tactile deluxe presentation offers something beyond the sea of consumable digital fare. They’re books you can be proud of, you can leave on anyone’s table and guarantee they’ll be picked up, and loved. We make illustrated books, gorgeous notebooks and calendars with incredible fine and fantastic art, but we also devour fiction. The economics of publishing and selling new stories is pretty tough but we really enjoyed reading and selecting the stories last year, so settled on four new titles for 2016. Call for Submissions We are looking for new and recent short stories. We...
