Deadline: August 31st, 2014 Payment: 1 cent USD per word. We also provide a complimentary electronic version of the book to each contributor. Tacitus Publishing has decided to take on its first anthology - IT'S A GRIMM LIFE. We are looking for short fiction (1,500 to 5,000 words) that takes a new look at the Grimm Fairy Tales. We are not interested in overwhelming gore or mature content. This should be an original piece of work. Submission process: There are two options, either using the submission form on the website or sending an email. For either choice, we ask that you attach the story as an rtf (rich text format) file. email: submission(at)tacituspublishing.com subject line should read: Grimm Anthology (This maybe pushing it based on the possibility of being overwhelmed, but we may offer quick critiques or suggestions to submitters in our responses. Taking Submissions: This Patchwork Flesh – Quiltbag Horror

Deadline: .05/word (CDN) Payment: August 31st, 2014 In addition to Start a Revolution, I’m also editing for Exile Editions an anthology called This Patchwork Flesh: QUILTBAG Horror. The reading period for This Patchwork Flesh will run from June 1st, 2014 to August 31st, 2014. All responses will be given by September 30th, 2014, and the book is slated for release in Fall 2015. Stories selected for inclusion will be paid at .05/word (CDN).  Submissions for this one can be anything up to 8,000 words. Original, unpublished fiction only. No reprints. As with Start a Revolution, because of the strictures the publisher is working under via provincial funding specific to these books, 90% of the anthology must be Canadian authored content. I do want to see submissions from international authors, I’m just warning everyone again, up front, about the guidelines I’m working under. Further guidelines (and a summary) below. But first: - The Central Idea: There would be no This Patchwork Flesh without Michael Rowe’s seminal anthologies, Queer Fear and Queer Fear II. Exquisite in both their execution and in their focus on putting openly gay protagonists front and centre, the Queer Fear anthologies shifted the nature of the conversation horror fiction was having in short form. And that’s because horror fiction is, for everything else it accomplishes (and it casts a very wide net through various subgenres), primarily a way of looking at the darker aspects of ourselves. Of examining the horrors we both embody and encounter. A way of exploring both catharsis and vastation by looking inward, and then extrapolating outward. It is, then, a way of turning a mirror on ourselves, as a way of looking at the rest of the world. But, as many readers will already be aware, the mirror of (Western) horror fiction tends to reflect a very narrow range of representations. This Patchwork Flesh is meant to be, like the Queer Fear books, a wider lens on...

Lovely, Dark, and Deep Lovely, Dark, and Deep — An Anthology Call — Wolves, fairies, ghosts, errant campers, and witches … fiction is rife with tales of what happens when people dare to enter, or leave, the woods. A classic setting from the oldest fairytale to the newest thriller, the adventure and danger that comes from wandering around a forest, or a jungle, provides endless opportunity for new stories. Less Than Three Press is seeking tales of all that can happen in the woods when those who shouldn’t be there venture into them anyway… THE DETAILS: Deadline is August 31, 2014 (give or take, we won’t kill you for sending it off the following morning). When it comes down to it, we want stories that will amaze us, astound us, provoke our thoughts, and boggle our minds. Betwixt supports diversity in speculative fiction and welcomes stories by and about individuals of all ages, classes, disabilities, ethnicities, genders, nationalities, races, religions, and sexual orientations. Taking Submissions: Mega Thump #2

Deadline: August 31st, 2014 Payment: $20.00 USD and a free copy of the book (digital and, if available, print). Carnal Horror Anthology Mega Thump Publishing** is now accepting Short Stories to be considered for its second Anthology (title TBD), to be edited again by yours truly. Submission Details: We are looking for quality short Horror stories that use sex or overt sexuality as a primary theme. What we are NOT looking for: No erotica, supernatural or otherwise (that is, no adult content for adult content’s sake) No shock for shock sake either; the sexual element(s) must be integral to the narrative’s plot, not inserted (hehe) arbitrarily. Think of films like VIDEODROME, GINGER SNAPS, THE WICKER MAN (1973), HALLOWEEN, or CAT PEOPLE (1982). As long as they fit the above criteria, stories can be horrifically humorous or dead serious in tone. Taking Submissions: Dark Mocha Bites: Death’s Café

Deadline: August 31, 2014 Payment: 40% royalty off the NET payment from all third party vendors for each copy sold will be paid quarterly via Paypal only. Mocha Memoirs Press is pleased to announce that we are accepting horror stories for our Dark Mocha Bites: Death’s Café series. Please read all of the information provided. Submission Guidelines What We Want This series focuses on horror stories. As with most stories, we are not afraid of genre mash-up, but the overall feel of the story must be horrific and fit the theme of Death’s Café. We want beautiful prose and originality wrapped up in the darkest, creepiest story you’ve ever conceived.  What We Don’t Want We don’t want slasher horror or splatterpunk for this collection. We will reject any stories that contain rape, or the abuse of minors. Stories featuring well-worn tropes (vampires, zombies, werewolves) will be an extremely hard sell. Violence is fine, but gratuitous gore isn’t. We love sex if it’s integral to the plot, but we don’t want a adult content-film script. Other than that, use your imagination to make us cringe and tremble. Submissions We prefer to see submissions using something approaching Standard Manuscript Format, which can be found here: http://www.shunn.net/format/story.htmlThe only exception is that italics MUST appear as they will be used—no underlining. We will accept works of 8,500 – 20,000 words. Please query if you wish to submit outside of these guidelines. To submit your work for this line, send a cover letter/email, completed story and synopsis/marketing history along with your name, pen name (if using one), story title with word count, address, website or blog, and any professional publication credits you think might interest us to: mmphorror (at) gmail (dot) com with Submission: story title_last name in the subject line. Remove the spaces, use the @ symbol in place of...
