Taking Submissions: Accessing the Future

Deadline: November 30th, 2014 Payment: $0.06/word Inspired by the cyberpunk and feminist science fiction of yesterday and the DIY, open access, and hacktivist culture of today, Accessing the Future will be an anthology that explores the future potentials of technology to augment and challenge the physical environment and the human form—in all of its wonderful and complex diversity. We are particularly interested in stories that address issues of disability (invisible and visible, physical and mental), and the intersectionality of race, nationality, gender, sexuality, and class—in both physical and virtual spaces.Accessing the Future will be a collection of speculative fiction that places emphasis on the social, political, and material realms of being. We want stories from as many diverse people as possible, especially from people with disabilities (visible and invisible, physical and mental), chronic illness or mental illness, who are neuroatypical, or people who have an understanding of the institutional and social construction of disability. We welcome stories from marginalized groups within the speculative fiction community (e.g., QUILTBAG, people of colour, non-North American writers), and from anyone with sensitivity to intersectional politics. Payment and Rights We pay $0.06/word (six cents a word) for global English first publication rights in print and digital format. The authors retain copyright. Submission Guidelines Send your submissions to [email protected] by midnight UTC on November 30th, 2014. Length 2500-7500 words (with a preference for 4000-6000 words). No reprints or simultaneous submissions. Attach your story as a .doc, .docx, or .rtf file, with your name, the story title, and the wordcount on the first page. We do not require or request that submitting writers identify themselves as a person with a disability, but we respect anyone’s desire to self-identify. What we want We want stories that place emphasis on intersectional narratives (rejection of, undoing, and speaking against ableist,...

Taking Submissions: Ill-considered Expeditions

Deadline: November 30th, 2014 Payment: Contributor's copy Ill-considered Expeditions? Yes. We want short tales of exploration gone awry. What are you looking for? We want stories in the grand style of Burroughs, Doyle and Verne. Spiffing adventures that plummet our heroes into disagreeable environments to face the wrath of unfriendly natives and questionable beasts. Your story can be set in the past, present or future, it can be earthbound or take place among the stars, the tale can unfold at the summit of a mountain, deep in the jungle or beneath the waves. The bottom line is, your story has no restrictions, other than the word count and the overall anthology series theme: stories with stings in their tails. How many words can I use to write this epic? We are looking for stories in the 2500 - 6000 range. What are the financial and legal details? As with our previous volumes, AMOK! and Stomping Grounds, the contributing authors to Vol 3: Ill-considered Expeditions will all receive a paperback copy of the book, plus an option to buy more at 50% off, plus e-version(s) of the book and be in the running for one of five Editor's Choice Awards of $30.00 First Worldwide Anthology Rights, for publication in the English language anywhere in the world and electronic and audio publication rights. All rights return to the author one year after publication of the anthology. How do I format my submission and when do you need it by? Check the FAQ for basic formatting, and please ensure that when you email your story to us, the subject header reads: 'EXPEDITIONS-YOUR NAME-TITLE' Your story document should be labeled: 'Expeditions-Your Name-Title-Word Count' and be sent as a .doc or .rtf Submissions will end at midnight on November 30th 2014 How do I send...

Taking Submissions: Bikes in Space 3

Deadline: December 1st, 2014 Payment: TBA after Kickstarter. It’s that time again! The third annual volume of Bikes in Space is in the works, this time with a monster twist. This year’s theme is zombies and bicycling. You may take that as literally (pedal powered undead? cycling zombie hunters?) or figuratively (what has automotive technology done to our brains?) as you like. Stories on non-zombie related themes will also be considered. Stories that are accepted will all have a feminist perspective (more about that) and incorporate bicycling in some way, whether or not they are actually about bicycles. We eagerly read all submissions but are particularly excited to receive stories that feature more diverse perspectives than have been classically found in sci fi. The deadline for volume 3 is December 1, 2014. Story submissions should be approximately 1,200 words. If your story needs to be longer or shorter, then by all means write it to be the length it needs to be and submit it anyway. There are no formatting, document type, or style requirements, and no strict definition of what exactly counts as science fiction. Payment will be upon publication; publication is contingent on successful Kickstarter funding, and payment amount will be determined by funding amount. Send submissions and questions to elly at takingthelane dot com. Via: Taking The Lane.

Taking Submissions: Fictionvale Episode 7

Deadline: December 1st, 2014 Payment: .02/word (up to 5k words) Episode Seven is an open genre call, meaning you can submit any popular fiction genre you want! Submissions were scheduled to open on November 1 and they are! Because they didn’t open until after noon, Eastern time, we’re adding an extra day. Submissions for Ep Seven will close on December 1, rather than November 30. If you’re interested in submitting, head on over to our Submission Guidelines page! We look for well-written genre fiction to fill our valley with story! Most episodes will pair two genres, sometimes similar ones, sometimes distinctly different ones, so we are open to all types of popular fiction. Because each episode features eight or so stories of two genres, we will put out a call for those genres first, but we will accept other genres as well, for future episodes. Please note that we are an editorial publisher. Check out our Editorial Musings blog post for what that means to us and to you if accepted. You can find any and all submission calls on our Submittable Page. It’s important that, as a writer, you know the market you’re submitting to. Each publication has their own style and their own ideas of what makes a great story. We suggest purchasing at least one episode of Fictionvale so that you can familiarize yourself with the types of stories we find worthwhile to publish. You can go for one of the genre free-for-alls, or a genre-specific episode, as they’re published. Guidelines Length & Format: Up to 5000 words, including flash (<1000 words) and micro-fiction (<100 words). Standard manuscript format: 1″ margins, double-spaced, Times New Roman 12pt. Taking Submissions: She Walks in Shadows

Deadline: December 15th, 2014 Payment: 6 cents a word (Canadian $, eh) and a contributor’s copy in each format released (paperback, hardcover, MOBI, ePub). Note: Female Authors Only! She Walks in Shadows, the first all-woman Lovecraft anthology, will hold an open submissions period from November 15, 2014 to December 15, 2014. DO NOT SEND STUFF BEFORE THAT DATE. Keep the following in mind: Submit short stories inspired by the work of Lovecraft that focus on a woman or female deity. It may be a character from Lovecraft’s work or someone of your own creation. You are not restricted to the 1920s as a setting. Steampunk, dieselpunk, noir, and any other sub-genre you can imagine are fine with us. Give us your best and most polished work. And yes, you must be a woman to submit. Women only. To avoid the Asenath effect (that means every character in the anthology would be Asenath Waite), we asked the authors who are contributing stories to pick a different character from a Lovecraft story. While you are not bound to these restrictions, we suggest that if you use a character from Lovecraft’s fiction, you avoid the usual suspects (Asenath and Lavinia). Consider interesting and novel settings for your stories. Surely, strange Lovecraftian entities haunt contemporary Nunavut or the Inca fought strange webbed monstrosities centuries ago. Anne Boleyn, evil sorceress or woman fighting the good fight against the Mi-Go? We may never know. Or maybe we will. POCs are highly encouraged to send stories. Transgender writers: same thing. Stories may be sent in French, English, or Spanish. We can read all three languages. Story length is up to 4,000 words with a pay rate of 6 cents a word (Canadian $, eh). No reprints, please. Submit your final story as a Word or RTF attachment...
