Taking Submissions: Specter Spectacular II: 13 Deathly Tales
Deadline: June 15 2013 Payment: $5 advance against % of future royalties split between contributors and paid annually (stories under 1,000 words will receive only the $5 advance), as well as a paperback copy of the anthology. Anthologist: Eileen Wiedbrauk Specter Spectacular II: 13 Deathly Tales. The shift from Specter Spectacular I’s “ghostly tales” to Specter Spectacular II’s “deathly tales” is a slight one, but rather than repeat of the first anthology, we hope to expand on the content and story tropes while still holding onto the eerie and enthralling feeling associated with the classic ghost story. While the final anthology will likely include some stories of ghosts and hauntings, we hope to feature rifts between worlds, specters and jack-o’-lanters, ghosts that are not ghosts, psychopomps (characters who conduct spirits or souls to the other world, such as Charon, the Valkyries, the Grim Reaper, etc.), psychic mediums, and tales of crossing over … and back … and perhaps over and back again. We’re quite intrigued by the possibilities (gothic, mythological, modern, etc.) and are looking forward to seeing what authors bring to the table. We recommend a familiarity with Specter Spectacular: 13 Ghostly Tales. As we did in the first volume, we will seek a mix of scary, eerie, beautiful, and funny stories to round out the reading experience. The first volume made Tangent’s 2012 recommended reading list and was named a Night Owl Review Top Pick; we hope to see the same quality of fiction or higher in volume II. Rights and compensation: Payment: $5 advance against % of future royalties split between contributors and paid annually (stories under 1,000 words will receive only the $5 advance), as well as a paperback copy of the anthology. Will consider new and reprinted works in English. For previously unpublished works: Seeking...
Taking Submissions: Darkness ad Infinitum
Deadline: June 15th 2013 Payment: Eighty percent of royalties from the profits of book sales will be paid to the authors. We will calculate each author’s payment by the number of words they contribute to the anthology. Payments will be made once an author’s royalties have reached $50+, and then for every $50 accumulated after that. Authors will also receive a contributor copy of the physical book. We are now accepting submissions for our upcoming horror anthology, Darkness ad Infinitum (working title). Stories and inquiries can be sent to [email protected]. Our motto: We are humble. We are dedicated. We are Villipede. What we don’t have in extravagant funds we make up for with the highest respect for art and literature. Our goal is to create publications that are of exceptional quality and to simultaneously promote our company and the authors we collaborate with. We are not focused on making a fortune; we will never take advantage of our clients just to make a profit. We will, however, dedicate ourselves to creating unique, beautiful, and professional books. STORY GUIDELINES SUBGENRES There is no specific subgenre that stories must comply with so long as they are rooted in horror or dark fantasy. We prefer our horror to have a sophisticated taste, so unless they are cleverly portrayed and the violence be intrinsic to their stories, ultra-gore and splatter stories will probably not find homes here. While we appreciate the strange and the weird, this is not a bizarro collection, and stories without coherent structure will probably not be considered. We are not opposed to consider alternative literature for this anthology, such as comics, ballads, poems and epics. WORD COUNT Our target goal is ten short stories composed of four- to seven-thousand words each. We may accept slightly longer or shorter stories if...

A modern exploration of the ancient Norse myths and legends. These can be reconstructions (or deconstructions) of familiar tales or entirely new ones. Tales of revenge and exploration, of modern man meeting figures out of Norse legend, even tales of the end of the world as prophesied by the original Eddur. Be creative and let your imagination bloom. We are open to any genre, but submissions must follow the above theme. Of particular interest to us are: Magical Realism, Urban Fantasy, Horror (there are some terrifying figures in Norse Mythology), Speculative Fiction, Dark Fiction, Slipstream and any of those genres that exist in the cracks and margins of writing. They have to take place in a more modern context (WWII – Present) and they must have a classic Scandinavian feel. Can take place anywhere in the world so don’t worry about researching landmarks and city maps of Stockholm or Copenhagen. Erotica will not be considered though there can be adult elements in any submission. Keep the cursing to a minimum. Violence and blood are fine, but limit the splatter unless its truly necessary to the plot. Submission Deadline: June 15, 2013 Please direct all submissions to:...

Taking Submissions: The Sea
Deadline: June 21st 2013 Payment: $20 per accepted story Dark Continents Publishing is pleased to announce open submissions to “The Sea”, an anthology edited by Nerine Dorman. HP Lovecraft once wrote, “The sea can bind us to her many moods, whispering to us by the subtle token of a shadow or a gleam upon the waves, and hinting in these ways of her mournfulness or rejoicing. Always she is remembering old things, and these memories, though we may not grasp them, are imparted to us, so that we share her gaiety or remorse.” The oceans of this world can swallow us, and sink us into the watery depths where monsters lurk and mermaids frolic. Or we can voyage far and discover new worlds. Selkies sing beneath the moonlight. The Flying Dutchman sails forever damned. Many-tentacled monstrosities drown unwary swimmers. Sunken treasures rest in wrecks shrouded in kelp and guarded by sea serpents. Be your tales wonder- or terror-filled, Dark Continents Publishing invites you to submit your previously unpublished short fiction of between 3 000 to 9 000 words that falls within the fantasy, horror, weird and science fiction genres. Payment rate is a flat rate of $20 per story. Closing date for submissions is June 21, 2013, for publication estimated in mid-2014. Mail your submissions to [email protected] with “The Sea” in the subject line.
