Taking Submissions: Best New Zombie Tales 4 AND 5

Best New Zombie Tales 4 AND 5 Deadline: September 15th 2011 Payment: Authors receive 1¢ per word, plus one contributor copy of the book. The wait is finally over. The submission period for BEST NEW ZOMBIE TALES (Vol. 4 & 5) has finally arrived. (If you have already been accepted for volume 4, you are still accepted! We just have a few holes to fill...) Here are the guidelines: BEST NEW ZOMBIE TALES (Vol. 4 & 5) Reading Period: Submission period starts now and ends September 15th 2011. Word Count: Between 2,000 - 10,000 words. Stories longer than 10,000 words will be accepted, but will be a hard sell. A maximum of two stories can be submitted. What we want: This is a reprint anthology. Zombie stories only. If your story does not have a zombie (or more than one zombie) in it, then it is not right for this anthology. We are looking for the best of the bunch. The year your story was released does not matter; whether or not it was previously released does. We do not want unpublished stories unless you have either: A) Sold us a story before. Or - B) Can honestly say that you have sold more than 5,000 books in your writing career (books means novels, not stories tucked inside other anthologies). If you have sold more than 5,000 books, send it in, and let us know that it is an original story. What we don’t want: Writers that ignore the guidelines, and stories that have appeared on personal websites, blogs, etc. This anthology is for stories that have been sold to a publisher. Stories with high amounts of sexual content will not be accepted. Something to consider: The stories do not have to be horror, but Books of the Dead is...

Taking Submissions: Mutation Nation

Mutation Nation Deadline: October 1st, 2011 Payment: $50.00 + 1 Contributor's Copy Tales of Genetic Mishaps, Monsters, and Madness Edited by: Kelly Dunn Mutations. Such tiny changes, such radical extremes. Mutations are not what we expect and more than we bargained for. The red-headed beauty on the fashion catwalk, Cronenberg's "Brundlefly" abomination—both are the result of mutations, but with wildly different results. Mutations can beautify or deform, create or destroy. Mutations have the power to build a new physical look, alter brain chemistry, affect emotions. With mutations in the mix, humans can wind up stranded in a hellish unfinished limbo, or evolve a little too well into something the rest of us might not recognize. Who are these human oddities? How do these characters and/or the people in their lives deal with the curse—or the blessing—of their mutations? This anthology will contain stories that explore these human mutations—and their consequences. Your mutation story should contain these basic elements: One or more human characters with a single or multiple mutations. One or more human characters dealing with a problem/problems related to the mutation. If your mutation results in a monster, that monster should be a new or different twist on humanity—not a vampire, werebeast, zombie, or other overly familiar supernatural creature. The form the mutation takes is up to you. You might choose a mutation that causes physical changes, and/or changes in brain chemistry; a mutation known to biological science or one of your own design. The mutation could be the result of an experiment, environmental factors, or even caused in some way by the character's own actions. There are infinite possibilities to explore. I am looking for compelling characters, strong plotting, and vivid imagery. I would prefer that the feeling of terror be mingled with a sense of wonder or...

Taking Submissions: Corrupts Absolutely?

Corrupts Absolutely? Deadline: October 1st, 2011 Payment: Payment is in the form of shared royalties (40% electronic, 25% print) a dark metahuman fiction reader edited by lincoln crisler Lord Acton originally wrote, “Power tends to corrupt, and absolute power corrupts absolutely.” Modern pop-culture is brimming over with stories of bright, polished men and women with iron wills and indestructible moral codes, who throw themselves into a life of public service after being graced (or cursed) with cosmic powers, a magic ring, puberty-activated mutant genes or robot suits. I call bullshit. Suddenly discovering that you’re different from baseline humanity is certainly the sort of thing that could change one’s worldview overnight, but that just isn’t interesting, especially since it’s been done ad infinitum. How about the people that look out for ‘Number One?’ People with flaws? People with serious psychological issues? People that have been looking for a ticket out of their circumstances and finally lucked into it? People who’ve devoted themselves to their success and have reached it, at long last? The nerdy kid who doesn’t have to be pushed around and isn’t willing to hide anymore? The jealous girl that’s tired of being the ‘other woman?’ The disenfranchised homeless man? The bored housewife who wishes she’d made some different choices? To some, this just screams ‘supervillain,’ or ‘antihero,’ and in many cases, you’d be right. But usually, these are stock characters without much substance. They’re the “bad guys.” Real life isn’t that simple, and even the meatier, more realistic metahuman portrayals out there are seen mainly in comic books; rarely in a prose anthology. Show me substance. Show me what would really happen if today’s people had superpowers. I’m looking for stories of 3,000 to 5,000 words that handle the topic of superpowers and metahumans from unique, interesting and...
