Deadline: October 31st, 2016 Payment: $6 Dear Whortleberry Friends; Hope you had a fun and happy summer. But September is almost here - that means it's time to start on our next book! We're trying something different this time. The title is FORTY FLASHES, and the idea is that the book will contain 40 flash fiction stories - 500 words tops - in the fantasy-science fiction genres we love best. Submission for these stories will be from Sept. 1 to October 31, with publication as soon after that as we can put the book together. Payment for stories - will be $6. Well, golly, it's only 500 words, so you will receive 1.2 cents per word, which is the most we have ever paid! (Heinlein and Bradbury used to write for 1 cent a word back in the Silver Age, if that is any consolation.) It will include several short stories exploring the subject of home and its importance in our physical and emotional well-being as humans. If your story is selected, you will receive a response with next steps to prepare for publication. We love the fact that writers around the world are inspired by our first lines, and we know that not every story will be sent to us. However, we ask that you do not submit stories starting with our first lines to other journals (or post them online on public sites) until we've notified you as to our decision (usually two to three weeks after the deadline). When the entire premise of the publication revolves around one sentence, we don't want it to look as if we stole that sentence from another writer. If you have questions, feel free to drop us a line. (Also, we understand that writers may add our first line to a story they are currently working on or have already completed, and that's cool. About the anthology: This is a non-themed anthology. Please make your stories better than good for this prestigeous collection. The two covers are by Holly Madew who now has a hatrick in books 3-5.
