Taking Submissions: Rampage on the Reefs

April 28

Deadline: April 28th, 2022
Payment: $10
Theme: Oceanic horror brought ‘to the surface’

Rampage on the Reefs (coming June 2022): the third anthology will bring us to the surface. We’re looking for colourful, weird aquatic horror; monsters in the shallows, coral formations hiding eerie beasts… psychedelic, high-thrills horror that proves it’s not always safe closer to the shore. Submissions close April 28th.

From 1st November 2021, we’re taking submissions for the first three anthologies in the Dead Seas collection. All three anthologies will have slightly different themes, but for all three we’re looking for aquatic or nautical horror stories – supernatural, realistic or altogether otherworldly – between 1,000-6,000 words (upper limit flexible).

100% of the profits from these anthologies will be going to The Shark Trust, supporting the protection and conservation of sharks and sea life. For more information, please visit https://www.sharktrust.org/

Our submissions process is 50% invite and 50% open, meaning there are 5-6 slots available through open submission for each anthology. But don’t fear! If you submit to one anthology and we like your story, but feel it could be a better fit for another (whether that’s another of these three, or one later in the year), then we’ll email you and see if you’d consider that slot instead.

All accepted authors will receive a $10 fee upon the publication date of the volume featuring their work. We know this isn’t a lot, but we’d like to say thank you for helping us support the cause.

Submissions Guidelines

Please ensure you follow these guidelines for all submissions. Any stories not following these guidelines may, unfortunately, be rejected.

Refer to individual submissions calls for an outline of the theme we’re looking for, but bear in mind that we will be releasing a lot of aquatic horror anthologies – so don’t worry about those themes too much. As long as it’s aquatic or nautical horror, you can submit it to any anthology; just specify which one you’d prefer to be published in, based on how well your story fits any of the themes listed.

If you submit to Terror in the Trench, for example, and we feel your story is good – but could fit Death in the Deep better – we will ask if you’d consider us placing it in that volume instead.

Email your submission to [email protected] – no matter which anthology you’re submitting to.

Please write out your email’s subject header in this format: “[AUTHOR NAME] – [STORY TITLE] – SUBMISSION FOR [ANTHOLOGY TITLE]”. Any submissions not following this format may, unfortunately, be dismissed. This helps us to keep our submissions inbox organised and lets our editor know what he’s looking at. Please remember this when submitting.

In your email, include your name and a brief cover letter, as well as an author bio for us to print at the back of the book if your story is selected. Don’t stress too much about the cover letter or the email itself, but please do not paste your work into the email body; instead, attach a .doc, .docx or .rtf file.

Please make sure your work is double-spaced and written in a sensible, 12pt font.

Any formatting is fine – as long as it’s sensible and easy to read.

Please do not use the “tab” or “space” key to indent your paragraphs, as this creates a lot of extra work for our editors. Instead, use the ruler at the top of the page. Unsure how to do this? Check out this tutorial: https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/office/using-the-ruler-in-word-775014ca-7bb9-4b75-ba19-4478c4a836d1

Make sure you’re happy with the piece you’re submitting. Most of our submissions windows are fairly wide, and we’re always happy to take into consideration edits at a later stage, but we want you to be as confident in the work you’re submitting as you can be.

If you have any questions, please email [email protected]. Good luck!
