Taking Submissions: Through Clouded Eyes: A Zombie’s View
Taking Submissions: Through Clouded Eyes: A Zombie’s View
Deadline: Just 1st, 2015 Payment: $25 per story selected for inclusion. We are looking for short stories of horror fiction told from the zombie’s point of view. We will consider different, intriguing, and creative spins on the multiple zombie mythos that currently exist. There are many fine zombie oriented anthologies already published, but we’re putting a spin on ours – at least 75% of the story must be told as the zombie from the zombie’s perspective. We’re giving the undead a chance to tell their tale through your words! We will not be accepting the following: Fan fiction of any variety – no characters, names, places, or homage pieces. Preexisting characterization from a story, novella, novel, or series you write. Love stories (no matter how fantastic yours is) – this is a horror only anthology. We encourage you to be as unique as you’d like and bring a new viewpoint to those who have suffered or perhaps sought ZOMBIFICATION! If you have questions about the details for the call, please write to [email protected] before beginning your piece. *** Submission Deadline: June 1, 2015 (midnight PST) Word Count: minimum 4,000 words; maximum: 8,000 words (anything outside that range will be automatically rejected). Payment: $25 per story selected for inclusion. Copyright: First time worldwide copyright for a period of one year after publication. Reprints will NOT be considered. All submissions MUST be submitted to: [email protected] *** Evaluation period: We expect to have the stories read and chosen within two months of the closing date. We strive to move through the decision making process as quickly and fairly as possible. If we find ourselves overwhelmed with submissions, we’ll contact the submitting authors to inform them of any delay. Via: Sirens Call Publications.
Taking Submissions: Sick City Syndrome
Taking Submissions: Sick City Syndrome
Deadline: June 1st, 2015 Payment: 5p/word Note: Not your usual anthology submission so may be of extra interest What if it was accepted that there really were ghosts? That mediums could actually talk to the dead. That your dearly departed continued to exist on a spiritual plane adjacent to ours and that at certain places, or in certain people they could manifest? What if those that disbelieved, that advanced a scientific explanation, are the kooks, freaks and loonies? What if neither model of reality were actually true and there was a third group, of conspiracy theorists, that were right? But which conspiracy? Is it aliens? Are the government spiking the water supply with experimental drugs? Are the military testing new subsonic weapons? Someone, somewhere knows the truth. This is the set up for Sick City Syndrome -my second novel & if you're a writer I want your help. So I'm asking for submissions. Lauren Beukes got her writer friends to write blog posts, news articles and the like for one of her books to help with the worldbuilding and that's what I'm looking for. I'd like news reports, blog posts, twitter conversations, other social networking, TV, radio, internet, academic article abstracts etc The novel will be set in the modern day, in "the City" (which will be closely modelled on Bristol of course) but there's no reason the articles need to be set in the modern day. I'd like a mix from all three viewpoints, choose one and give me a maximum of 750 words. If I use your piece (in any way - Some will be published on this website - http://petewsutton.com/sick-city-syndrome/, some will go in the book itself) you will be credited and I'll pay you 5p/word (upon publication) Send your pieces to BRSBKBLOG (at) Gmail.com by the...

Taking Submissions: Blood in the Rain
Taking Submissions: Blood in the Rain
Deadline: June 1, 2015 Payment: 2.5 cents a word, with a minimum of $75 For the vampire erotica anthology Blood in the Rain, available October 2015, we seek short stories of 2000–7000 words, preferably by Northwest authors—from Oregon, Washington, British Columbia, and Alaska. Your story must include both a vampire and an erotic element, but it doesn’t have to be a “true” vampire, whatever that is, and the vampire doesn’t have to be the story’s focus. Erotically, we’re open to anything from a sexy tease to hardcore adult content. We encourage stories nonstereotypically including people who are LGBTQI (or A if you can make it work), people of color, and people any age above 18. Most of all, we want compelling characters having hot sex, with a story that draws us in. And a vampire. Bottom line: Make us horny. Stories due June 1, 2015. We pay on acceptance: 2.5 cents a word, with a minimum of $75. The Nitty Gritty Send your story as a .doc, .docx, .rtf, or .pdf file to [email protected], with SUBMISSION and the story title in your subject line (for example, SUBMISSION: My Sexy Vampire Story). Use traditional manuscript format for your story. If you don’t know what that is, seethis handy guide. And for the love of the gods, proofread before sending. Give us a short cover note, ideally with an author bio. Let us know if your story’s a reprint. We might take the perfect reprint, but original work is preferred. Send as many submissions as you want, but we’re not likely to pick more than one story from any writer. We’re buying first North American serial rights, first North American audio publishing rights, first world online rights, and archival rights (that is, to potentially archive your story on our website). Taking Submissions: Those Who Live Long Forgotten II
Taking Submissions: Those Who Live Long Forgotten II
Deadline: June 15th, 2015 Payment: 5% of the net profit will be paid for each accepted story. These payments will be issued to you at quarterly intervals. Stories under 3,000 words will only receive 4% of the net profit. Myths never die. King Arthur cannot be killed with a pike through the chest, or centuries of lies; instead he lays dreaming but not dead in wait for England’s fatal hour. The Ice Queen, in all her frozen fractal forms, does not waste away under summer suns. The Green Man, though a being of leaf and twig and human eyes, cannot be killed with so simple a stroke as leveling his forests and building cities on the cinders (even now, he watches us from his statues and reliefs embedded deep in our buildings). These beliefs predate written language. Something other than the ability to record them has kept these stories alive. Myths never die, but surely they don’t actually live, do they…? 18thWall Productions wants myths alive with life. We want heroes and monsters out of time, legendary characters in unfamiliar settings. We want mash-ups of magic and history, legends that live literally as well was figuratively. We want sirens on the Caribbean shores calling to men of ill-repute for yet another night of sin, we want to doings of the Pickwick Club extended into our dreary age, we want the Strigoi at the Petrograd Soviet…Let your imagination run riot. We want your myths and monsters to feel real, with voices feelings, and rich back-stories interwoven with the familiar tales. Why are they there? Where have they been all this time? We’re open to any style of fiction you care to give us. And please be aware that our guidelines are deliberately vague. As with our previous anthology, this is a free playground....
Taking Submissions: Winter Tales
Taking Submissions: Winter Tales
Deadline: June 15th 2015 Payment: £10 and contributor's copy Frost pierces through everything. Your bones ache in the icy wind. Harsh winter storms rage and the sun is leaving, not to return for many months. Winter seems to never end. There is however beauty and magic. The snow covered pine trees reaching for the sky, the green northern lights dancing over the mountains, the wolf packs howling at the moon, and the snow crystals glinting like stars in the pale moonlight. When the temperatures drop, people and creatures gather around the camp fires to share warmth, friendship and tales, to chase away the frost and try to ignore the terrifying creatures lurking in the darkness. We are now collecting winter tales, to drive away the grim winter and bring you the wonders and magic of the season. Fox Spirit Books will publish the Winter Tales anthology in the beginning of 2016. The anthology will be edited by Margrét Helgadóttir. We want unusual and elegant speculative fiction stories with full plot and strong characters. We are seeking diversity. The stories can be light with a touch of romance or humour, or dark and terrifying. Stories about creatures, monsters, animals and shapeshifters are welcome. The stories can be within speculative subgenres such as the weird, fables or folkloric, magical realism, adventure, dystopian, cyberpunk, mystery or fantastic, but we ask that the stories take place on Earth and have the winter as frame. Poetry is welcome. We are not looking for nonfiction or fanfiction. We are not looking for satire, erotica, paranormal romance, splatter or overly gory stories. Submission details Submission deadline: June 15th 2015. Response will be given by end of October 2015 at the latest. The manuscript must be written in English. Stories should be 1500 words up to 7500 words. Any stories below or above this will not be considered, with the exception of poems which should be no longer...

Dress them in black or tie dye or frilly pink tulle, but these villains need to be seriously bad. We are looking for tales of truly badass dark lords and ladies. We’re not talking about the guys who stand around monologueing to let the hero win. We’re talking smart dark lords who don’t keep incompetent minions around. Comedy is completely acceptable, as long as it doesn’t detract from the villain’s ability to be a total badass. Taking Submissions: The Cult Of Me June Short Fiction Contest
Taking Submissions: The Cult Of Me June Short Fiction Contest
Deadline: June 21st 2015 Payment: 3 Prizes Note: Sorry for the late posting, was just linked this one By Cyberjunkie (Own work) via Wikimedia Commons Quite often it can take ages to find the image for the next month's contest. This month's proved an exception. I'm sure that you'll agree that this is quite an awesome door! It might be a bit much for my house but it does make a good piece for inspiring June's contest submissions. I wonder what lies behind that door... As always the stories can be of any genre. They just have to be inspired by this month's image and no more than 500 words. Entry to the contest remains free and there are prizes for the three winners. I will also feature any of the stories that don't win but I believe are worth showcasing on this blog. First prize is a £50 Amazon gift card or PayPal prize Second prize is a £20 Amazon gift card or PayPal prize Third prize is a £10 Amazon gift card or PayPal prize The money for the prizes come out of my own pocket, although I do make a little from advertising on this blog. So if you see something of interest then feel free to click on the links and purchase away! If you haven't tried my books yet then check them out at the top of the page, as well as buying a good read you'll be helping this contest. Please make sure to check your story for typos before submitting. I don't mind a few errors, but my enjoyment of a story is diminished if I have to wade through too many. I'll post the winning entries by July 1st 2015. As with everything in life there are a few rules: Only one...

Taking Submissions: Land of Nod: The Place Where Evil Began
Taking Submissions: Land of Nod: The Place Where Evil Began
Deadline: June 23, 2015 Payment: For short stories, pay is $7 per story; According to Genesis 4:16, after Cain murdered his brother Abel, God exiled him to the Land of Nod, which was east of Eden. Not much else is known about this land, but Nod is said to mean “wanderer” in Hebrew. The garden gnomes believe this is where evil began. Maybe under a yew tree. No one knows where Cain found a wife or someone to mother his children, but in Genesis 4:17, Cain had a son and named him Enoch. Cain then built a city and named the city Enoch to honor his son. From the birth of Enoch to the flood that destroyed the earth, if the Biblical math is correct, there was a span of at least 1,500 years. Let’s assume the Land of Nod was a huge place that didn’t disappear until the flood. Pick a period any time between Cain’s exile and the flood and tell the stories of characters in the Land of Nod. Without using characters in the Bible, tell a story set in the Land of Nod. It can be any kind of story as long as it involves an element of speculation. Bonus points for weirdness of various kinds. Make us believe in evil. Do aliens live in the Land of Nod? Do they abduct warrior women defending the city of Enoch and rape and torture them? Or perhaps the mayor of a village develops a crippling disease and discovers how to prevent it from spreading by performing genetic experiments on himself. Do one of the Nephilim desert the angels of God and plot to destroy the plan to impregnate the daughters of men? What kind of weapons do the primitives own? Do they dwell in caves? Are there...

Taking Submissions: Spectral Book of Horror Stories Volume 2
Taking Submissions: Spectral Book of Horror Stories Volume 2
Deadline: June 30th, 2015 Payment: £20 per 1000 words, up to a maximum of £100 Mark Morris says: “I’m pleased to announce that THE 2ND SPECTRAL BOOK OF HORROR STORIES is now open to submissions! Stories can be any length (though the preferred length is 2000-8000 words) and payment is £20 per 1000 words, up to a maximum of £100, which means that if you submit a story that’s over 5000 words it will be on the understanding that you’ll be giving us those additional words for free. The closing date for submissions is June 30th, and the book will be launched at FantasyCon in October. Due to the volume of stories I’m expecting to receive over the next few months it may take a while for me to get back to you, and my responses may, by necessity, be brief (I have my own writing deadlines to meet, after all).PLEASE NOTE: NO MULTIPLE SUBMISSIONS AND NO REPRINTS!! All submissions should be sent to [email protected] and stories should be double-spaced in a clear, readable font. There’s no theme for the anthology – all I’m looking for are well-written, original, disturbing stories that push my buttons. If you want further clues as to the kinds of stories I like, I recommend you buy and read a copy of the inaugural volume of THE SPECTRAL BOOK OF HORROR STORIES, which is available from Spectral Press. Thanks – and good luck!” Via: Spectral Press.
Taking Submissions: Unnamed Fey Publishing Anthology
Taking Submissions: Unnamed Fey Publishing Anthology
Deadline: June 30th, 2015 Payment: $5.00 per story Fey Publishing is looking to put together an anthology of the most disturbing horror stories imaginable. Whether it’s about creatures who go bump in the night or those who walk around in plain daylight with evil lurking in their minds, we want them. Almost anything goes. Serial Killers. Psychopaths. Monsters. Zombies like you've never seen them before. Carnage. Cannibalism. Hell, even horror erotica. It can be bizarre, it can be realistic. Doesn’t matter. Let your twisted brain go wild on this one. However, we do have to put in a few restrictions. Anything that we can’t publish on Amazon without risk of it getting yanked, we just can’t do it. Sorry folks, those are the rules. Length: Up to 10,000 words. No minimum, but beware that flash fiction has to be pretty damn good to get our attention. No longer than 10,000 words please. Selection: We will choose 10-13 stories for inclusion. Pay: $5.00 per story. There will be an editor’s choice winner that will get placed at the front of the book and they will get paid a small bonus. So make those stories good. Considerations: While we won’t restrict certain topics, be aware that violence against women and children isn’t something we will take lightly, especially if it’s only being used for shock value. Same can be said about any violence, including animal abuse. While yes, we are looking for dark, disturbing tales, we also want well-written stories that scare on a deeper level than simply by resorting to shocking violence. A solid story is paramount to getting accepted into this anthology. Deadline: June 30th, 2015. Publication Date: September 2015 Note: Fey Publishing does not require exclusive rights. If the piece has been published elsewhere, include permission from original...

We are doing blatant homage to these wonderful contributions to these genres. We'll release issues quarterly in both text and audio formats. What We're Looking For We've identified elements that we're looking for in the stories we'll buy: An interesting and well-thought-out lead character, first and foremost. We prefer Chicago Manual of Style rules, and we will reject it if it's a mess, even if it's an amazing story. If you're bad at grammar and spelling, then hire an editor or bribe a friend with cookies to help you before you...

Taking Submissions: TALES. Fae Visions of the Mediterranean
Taking Submissions: TALES. Fae Visions of the Mediterranean
Deadline: June 30th, 2015 Payment: €10 plus royalties and Micro-stories will be paid €5 plus royalties Quivering mirages, ghost ships, glossy scales slipping away beneath the waves; we are seeking progressive and inclusive short stories about wonders, terrors, omens, sea-monsters, apparitions and other folk creatures and horrors from throughout the Mediterranean region. You might find inspiration in medieval bestiaries and the margins of maps and manuscripts; stories whispered by pirates in the long nights at sail; horrible and marvellous visions shaken travellers barely dare to recall; names of creatures known by everyone in the streets around the harbour; particularly troubled nightmares you had or someone shared with you. This anthology, subtitled Fae Visions of the Mediterranean, could be seen as a postcolonial, Borgesian travelogue by a many-gendered, multiracial, polyglot and polymath sailor (i.e. stories may feature any nature of protagonist) recounting their fantastic adventures on naval journeys between Taranto, via Algiers, Latakia and Eluària, to Split (your TALES need not take place at any of these sites). The more fantastic, abyssal, weird, wonderful, paradoxical, unsettling and tempestuous stories the better. Horrors and beasts in the stories may be based on Mediterranean folklore, or may be invented for the purpose (and any position in between), but a connection to one of the Mediterranean countries, languages or cultures is a must, as we expect the reader to follow the route with their finger on an antique atlas. The stories should taste like salt and wonder. The rules: We are looking for uncanny stories up to 5 000 words, fiendish illustrations/comics up to 12 pages, and briny poems up to 40 lines. We’re also interested in micro-stories up to 500 words written in all languages of the Mediterranean (i.e. other than English). Please send a cover letter in English, Italian, French, Arabic or...

Taking Submissions: Legends of Sleepy Hollow
Taking Submissions: Legends of Sleepy Hollow
Deadline: June 30, 2015 Payment: $10 and 1 contributor's copy The picturesque village of Sleepy Hollow is nestled up against the Hudson River in Westchester County, New York. Made famous by Washington Irving in his iconic Halloween tale, “The Legend of Sleepy Hollow,” it has been featured in film and television numerous times–most recently in the FOX TV show, Sleepy Hollow. It’s most famous fictional resident is, of course, The Headless Horseman. This galloping demon has beheaded many a poor unfortunate and has been embraced by the community. He is the official mascot of Sleepy Hollow High School, and his likeness dominates the village on street signs, storefronts, firetrucks, and more. But he is not alone. There are countless horrific tales of darkness stemming from this seemingly-innocent locale, and it’s about time these other stories were given their due. Legends of Sleepy Hollow is a new anthology aimed at all of the other creepy, gruesome, terrifying tales centered on this infamous village. Give us your gothic chiller, your modern horror, your Lovecraftian insanity. Trot out the terror from the mythology of the native people who lived here long before Europeans arrived. Take us into the past or into the future. Explore an existing local legend or create one of your own. The sky’s the limit. All we require is for your story to focus in some way on the supernatural and that it take place in or around the Village of Sleepy Hollow. IMPORTANT INFO: No gratuitous sex, violence, or profanity. No adult content or erotica. Not interested. No fan fiction (stay away from the TV show or Tim Burton’s film). Story must be your work and it must be original (no reprints). SUBMISSION NITTY-GRITTY: We want stories of between 2,000 – 8,000 words. Once you have your masterpiece, email it as...

That means stories submitted should seek to explore some combination of Bizarro with the themes typically found in Mythos fiction. This could mean just about anything, so do not be daunted or put off by this. That said, for those of you unfamiliar with Bizarro, consider familiarizing yourself with the genre before submitting. This is not to say anyone should worry whether their submission “is” or “isn’t” Bizarro enough, or Bizarro at all… this is just a prompt to get interested writers to think in a slightly different mode than usual. Taking Submissions: An Improbable Truth: The Paranormal Adventures Of Sherlock Holmes
Taking Submissions: An Improbable Truth: The Paranormal Adventures Of Sherlock Holmes
Deadline: July 1st, 2015 Payment: split royalties + 1 contributor copy Edited by A.C. Thompson “When you have eliminated all which is impossible, then whatever remains, however improbable, must be the truth.” Sherlock Holmes is probably one of the most recognizable characters in Western literature. Conan Doyle’s inimitable detective has been the subject of literally, thousands of books, movies, television shows, plays and even songs. Recently, the estate of Arthur Conan Doyle has released the copyright on Holmes and this has made the market ripe for re-imaginings. Our goal with An Improbable Truth is to create an anthology of unique stories that create something new while paying homage to the original books. An Improbable Truth is looking for stories that set Holmes on a paranormal adventure. The settings may be any place and time from the original Victorian England all the way to modern day, future and any fantasy world in between (weird west, cyberpunk, steampunk, noir, Lovecraftian, dystopia). The only catch is that the stories must have a distinctly dark and paranormal edge. Push the envelope and let the mystery run wild. Ghosts, serial killers, vampires, zombies, monsters of all types are welcome. Keep in mind: if this book were on the shelf at your local bookshop, it would be in the HORROR section (sci-fi is great as long as it’s Aliens-type sci-fi and not Star Trek-type sci-fi). Word of warning: Sherlock is a beloved character with a very distinct voice and manner. We want to be sure that we keep and/ or expand on those attributes that have made him a literary icon. Tread lightly when messing with characterization and your story better make a damn good case for any wild variations (i.e.—Sherlock as a mealy-mouthed veterinarian, romantic entanglements). However, we are very interested in diverse characters and...
Taking Submissions: Defying Doomsday
Taking Submissions: Defying Doomsday
Deadline: July 1st, 2015 Payment: 7 cents per word Defying Doomsday will be an anthology of apocalypse-survival fiction with a focus on disabled characters. We already have some fantastic stories lined up, but we want more! If you have an apocalypse story featuring a character with disability, we would love to read it.Submission Guidelines: (One of) the protagonist(s) must be a character with disability, such as physical impairments, chronic illnesses, mental illnesses and/or neurodiverse characters etc. We will consider stories with characters experiencing all kinds of disability and hope that submitting authors will be creative with the possibilities. We feel strongly that disability or chronic illness (etc) should have an impact on the character’s life and during the post-apocalyptic event. For example, a character with a deadly peanut allergy in a world where peanuts have been wiped out by a plague isn’t going to quite cut it. However, we are not looking for issue stories or stories where disability is the sole focus of the narrative. Some sort of cataclysmic event must have occurred or be in the process of occurring. We are open to a variety of events, including apocalypses, alien invasions, devastating war, natural disasters etc. Be creative! We are most interested in stories set in the near future, however, we will also consider stories set in the far future or an alternate timeline version of the recent past.We are not interested in fantasy (that means no magic). Stories can be young adult or adult stories. Graphic themes and content are okay, but we’re not looking for erotica or gratuitous violence. Stories should be between 3000 and 7000 words in length and submitted in standard manuscript format. Email submissions to: [email protected] We want a varied anthology with stories that are fun, sad, adventurous or horrific etc. We are...

Taking Submissions: Emby’s Bestiary
Taking Submissions: Emby’s Bestiary
Deadline: July 1st, 2015 Payment: $25.00 and electronic copy An Emby Bestiary This will be Emby Kids first anthology as well as Emby’s first cover contest! Did you have a favorite story about monsters when you were a kid? One of mine was a hillbilly yarn about a monster that stalked the woods on a mountain near our home. This monster didn’t even have a name, but the description of it was so intense (glowing red eyes, yellow fangs and leathery wings) that I never forgot it and I’ve remembered it every time I go near any mountain. An Emby Bestiary is looking for stories like that: yarns about monsters that will make a big impression on young imaginations. They can be good monsters that help upon a tale of discovery or evil monsters that lurk in a cautionary tale. The two requirements are that the creatures be original and that the tale be suitable for children (think middle-grade fiction up to pg-13) Take us back to the campfires of our youth as you spin a tale that you can tell your own kids. Then, when I announce the stories that are chosen to be in the book, I’ll also announce the monster from one story to be on the cover of the book! That monster will be professionally rendered by a graphic artist and brought to life for all to see! Edited by: Miles Boothe Submission Period: 2/1/15 through 7/1/15 Reading Period: 7/2/15 through 9/2/15 Acceptances will be announced 9/2/15 Tentative Publication Date: Holidays 2015 Payment: $25.00 and electronic copy of the book upon publication. Word Limits: 2000 to 8000 words. Please query if longer. Format: Submissions should be .doc (.docx is fine) or .rtf formats. The entire text will be reformatted, so no need to worry about margins,...

Taking Submissions: A Lonely And Curious Country
Taking Submissions: A Lonely And Curious Country
Deadline: July 1st, 2015 Payment: 1 cent per word and 1 contributor's copy Announcing a new Lovecraftian anthology, open to submissions. “When a traveler in north central Massachusetts takes the wrong fork at the junction of Aylesbury pike just beyond Dean's Corners he comes upon a lonely and curious country." - HP Lovecraft, “The Dunwich Horror” Most forays into Lovecraft country start with taking the wrong fork, opening the wrong book, befriending the wrong person. Before you know it, everything is…strange, somehow. The vegetation is too lush, the angles are wrong, animals don’t behave as expected. We invite you to come with us and deliberately take that wrong fork. Find out what happens behind the shuttered windows. Listen to the piping of the whippoorwills. Most travelers don’t have time for worry or regrets. You’ll probably be fine, if, perhaps, not quite the same as before. We are looking for previously unpublished stories that relate to Lovecraft’s worlds or the Cthulhu mythos. That’s quite a broad subject! We are more interested in clever ideas and high quality prose than devotion to worn out tropes. We like well written stories. Want to do an Innsmouth riff? Sure. An unhappy outcome for a Miskatonic U graduate student? We're there. A PI in San Francisco in the 40s gets a troublesome case? OK. Have you invented a new tome or mythos entity, and want to retell The Haunter in the Dark? Did Lovecraft really know the AWFUL truth and disguised it as prose? Well, this isn’t the place for you. Previously submitted stories are OK, just not previously published. Submissions by new authors and those of diverse backgrounds are encouraged. We do not publish adult content or diatribes of any kind. Specifics: Stories may be a maximum 6,000 words. Payment is $.01 (one cent)...
