Taking Submissions: In The Mood: The Future
Deadline: January 1st, 2025 Payment: $30 CAD Theme: Poetry, non-fiction, experimental fiction, fan fiction, and more that deal with the idea of "The Future" (Think Sci-fi and utopian/dystopian.) In The Mood Magazine is a pop culture journal about the things we like to watch. Published triannually, we delve into film, TV, music videos, and celebrity culture through essays, conversations, and unconventional forms of criticism like film diaries, poetry, and comics. Our focus is on the viewer, their viewing habits, highs, and hang-ups. Why can't we stop thinking about the exact shade of pink of Suki’s car in 2 Fast 2 Furious? Or the look on Marnie’s face after she’s fired the shotgun? Tell us what you're obsessed with, we want to hear all about it. But you should know that we’re terrible at keeping secrets. So… are you in the mood? Magazine: Submissions are currently OPEN. Theme: The Future Deadline: January 1st, 2025 Our last issue was out of the past… now we’re heading into the future. From sci-fi (A.I. Artificial Intelligence) to utopian/dystopian (Born in Flames), in places near (Her) or far (Solaris), for our 12th issue we’re looking for experimental criticism on any films, TV, or music videos set in or that engage with the future ✨ If you need some inspiration, check out this comprehensive list! 💡 Some topics and films we’d love to see pitches for: - Focus on specific sci-fi fashion, food, technology, and/or architecture - Films set in the future (Robocop, High Life, Strange Days, Gattaca) or near future (The Purge, Ghost in the Shell, Moon) - Apocalyptic/post-apocalyptic (The Happening, Children of Men, The Terminator, The Falls (1980), I Am Legend) - Climate change/“cli-fi” themes (The Day After Tomorrow, Silent Running, Beasts of the Southern Wild) - Arthouse/experimental/video art (Planet Heaven (2022), Liquid Sky, Ryan Trecartin, Hito Steyerl) - Retrofuturism (Heart of the World, Metropolis, Death Race 2000) - Film technology...
Taking Submissions: The Best Trans Horror of the Year, Volume One
Deadline: January 1st, 2025 Payment: Fiction: 2c per word plus a paperback contributor copy, Poetry: $25 plus a paperback contributor copy Theme: Reprints of horror stories published in 2024 by authors who identify as trans or nonbinary Last week, just a few days after the election, I had a bit of a manic episode that ended with me dying my fading lavender hair black and posting the following on Bluesky: the incredible urge to launch an annual “best trans horror of the year” anthology series as a direct fuck-you to this state, this country, this world I had spent the whole day anxiously pacing around our bookstore attempting to figure out a way to control the various emotions bursting through my body. Rage, fear, depression. A general sense of hopelessness. You know, the usual cocktail. Usually, when I get like this, I throw myself at a new project without much consideration. It’s the way my brain operates. I crave creative outlets as both a distraction and a form of healing. At some point, the anthology idea hit me, and it wouldn’t leave. Believe me, I tried to forget about it. This is coming from someone who already decided to get out of the anthology game, and only focus on our magazine Ghoulish Tales going forward. Despite how much I love anthologies, they’re a lot of work, a lot of money, a lot of energy. The smart thing to do would be to forget about the idea. But is it the right thing to do? Immediately, upon conceiving the idea, I felt in my heart that this needed to happen, that I wanted to do it, that it was already in the process of becoming a thing. I live in Texas. I am surrounded by terrible, awful humans who thrive on hatred. There needs to be...
Taking Submissions: The Cafe Irreal Winter 2025 Issue
Deadline: January 1st, 2025 Payment: One cent U.S. per word ($2 minimum) Theme: Fantastic Fiction You really NEED to read the description below. Why The Irreal Cafe? "When I enter a cafe, the first thing I perceive are implements. Not things, not raw matter, but utensils: tables, seats, mirrors, glasses and saucers... Taken as a whole, they belong to an obvious order. The meaning of this ordering is an end — an end that is myself, or rather, the man in me, the consumer that I am. Such is the surface appearance of the human world... Now let us describe the cafe topsyturvy. "...Here, for example, is a door. It is there before us, with its hinges, latch and lock. It is carefully bolted, as if protecting some treasure. I manage, after several attempts, to procure a key; I open it, only to find that behind it is a wall. I sit down and order a cup of coffee. The waiter makes me repeat the order three times and repeats it himself to avoid any possibility of error. He dashes off and repeats my order to a second waiter, who notes it down in a little book and transmits it to a third waiter. Finally, a fourth waiter comes back and, putting an inkwell on my table, says, 'There you are.' 'But,' I say, 'I ordered a cup of coffee.' 'That's right,' he says, as he walks off. "If the reader, while reading a story of this kind, thinks that the waiters are playing a joke or that they are involved in some collective psychosis, then we have lost the game. But if we have been able to give him the impression that we are talking about a world in which these absurd manifestations appear as normal behaviour, then he...
Taking Submissions: Robots Past & Future
Deadline: January 1st, 2025 Payment: 8 cents/6 pence per word for original stories, 6 cents/4 pence for reprints. Theme: Robots Past & Future Note: Reprints Welcome We're delighted to announce a new call for submissions which is now open! The theme is Robots Past & Future Short Stories. Please read through the submission details carefully as we’ve changed some of our guidelines and it could result in your submission not being acknowledged if you do not follow them. Robots Past & Future Short Stories We enjoyed our Robots and AI book so much that we’re following up by splitting these topics in two, particularly because in the new world of Generative AI, Robots and Artificial Intelligence are moving rapidly in new directions. For this theme, we’re looking for submissions that delve into the fascinating evolution of robots — from the mechanical marvels of the past to the imaginative possibilities of the future. Whether exploring the nostalgia of retro robotics, envisioning futuristic automatons, or crafting unique stories that bridge the two, we invite you to bring your vision of robots to life in this exciting collection. Submit to: [email protected] Terms: Multiple submissions are fine but must be in separate emails. Simultaneous submissions are fine but you must have the right to license your story in an anthology. For accepted stories we pay Science Fiction & Fantasy Writers of America (SFWA) rates of 8 cents/6 pence per word for original stories, 6 cents/4 pence for reprints. We will aim to read each story and confirm its status within 4 months of the submission deadline. Submission does not imply the right to publication. Each story will be read...
Taking Submissions: Glen Must Die!
Deadline: January 1st, 2025 Payment: 3 cents per word, minimum Theme: Speculative fiction, that includes a friend of the main character named Glen who has to die in the main story, and the words "crystal palace" must be mentioned as well in any context. All of us have that one person that we give crap to. They’re good people, we like them, we’re friends, and the way we communicate our love is by endlessly tormenting them. For some reason, they just become the butt of all the jokes—maybe because they have it coming, but probably because they’re the ones in the group strong enough to take it with good humor and still love us back. In short, every group has a Glen. This is not an anthology made in honor of Glen and those like him. Who wants to honor them, anyways? This is an anthology made to honor all such friendships, and those people who really need to see Glen die. Looking for short stories 2-5k words long. Stories must include the following elements: Any form of speculative fiction (science fiction, fantasy, etc.). The words “crystal palace” must appear in the story at some point. Context is irrelevant. There must be a character named Glen that appears somewhere in the story. Glen must die in the course of the story. Please keep stories to PG-13 or tamer. Payment will be $.03/word pending a Kickstarter launch of the anthology. Benchmarks on the Kickstarter launch will be set to increase pay to pro rates ($.08/hr). Submit stories to Frog Jones at [email protected] no later than Jan 1, 2025. 2,000-5,000 words Manuscript format. If you don’t know what that is, HERE IS A LINK. .doc or .rtf files are acceptable. Google doc links and .pdfs will not be read. Via: Impulsive Walrus Books.

Taking Submissions: Spooky Magazine #3
Deadline: January 1st, 2025 Payment: 1 cent per word and a contributor's copy Theme: Cozy horror. Fun horror. Classy horror. Dare we say, wholesome horror? SUBMISSIONS FOR ISSUE 3 ARE OPEN FROM NOV. 1ST – JAN. 1ST! WHAT WE ARE LOOKING FOR Cozy horror. Fun horror. Classy horror. Dare we say, wholesome horror? Oxymoron? We don’t think so. One place you can start your exploration of this idea is an article from Nightmare Magazine penned by one of our co-founders. But perhaps the easiest way to understand what we mean is to read stories by some of the old masters we love: Ray Bradbury, Charles Beaumont, Richard Matheson, Robert Bloch, Roald Dahl. Watch classic episodes of Thriller, The Twilight Zone, and Night Gallery. Read old horror comics. Listen to radio dramas like Suspense, Quiet, Please, and Inner Sanctum Mysteries. Consume enough vintage horror, and you’ll probably begin to get an idea of the type of thing that’s likely to appeal to us. In short, we’re looking to provide a space for a type of storytelling that has largely gone out of style – dark and scary, but playful and approachable with an emphasis on plot. For a concrete example of the kind of thing we’re likely to love, grab a copy of one of our issues. To clarify further, here’s a list of things we want and things we don’t, which may help you hit the sweet spot. THINGS WE LOVE: Stories with a moral core. It need not happen in every tale, but we like to see good prevail (or at least evil punished). Ironic justice, in which cleverly nasty things happen to bad people, as in old EC comics, makes us chuckle with ghoulish delight. Well-earned twist endings. There’s nothing we love more than a really good surprise or a clever way to subvert our expectations. Pull...

Taking Submissions: Short(b)Reads
Deadline: January 10th, 2024 Payment: $30 Theme: Speculative Stories that feature food in a way that makes you want to eat it Ever read something that made you hungry? Ever had an author so skilled at sensory description make you crave the food in their story? We want to make an anthology out of that feeling. Send us your stories that feature food. The food doesn’t need to be central to the plot, however, the sensory description of the food needs to stand out for us. We want our readers hungry, both for the rest of your story and for the food it contains. Wow us with your culinary plot points. All stories must feature a speculative element, whether it’s magic or monsters or anything in between. All subgenres of speculative fiction are welcome, although military/political/alien-based sci-fi will be a harder sell. We will judge all stories by their own merits though, so if you think you have something that fits, we want to read it. All food featured in your story must be appetizing and must be something that can be made in the real world. We want speculative fiction, but not speculative food. All stories must be previously unpublished (this includes your own website/blog). We will not accept any stories featuring bigotry, hateful language, or sexual assault of any kind. This is an anthology for adults so some sex/violence/profanity is fine, as long as it directly pertains to the story and isn’t used solely for shock value. We do want our mothers to read this, so any sex should be fade-to-black rather than overly descriptive. Guidelines: Deadline: January 10th, 2025 at 11:59 EST Word count: 2,500-7,000 words Payment: Flat payment of $30 USD per accepted story, paid through PayPal or Venmo. Taking Submissions: Shatter the Sun: Queer Tales of Untold Adventure
Submission Window: November 1st - January 15th, 2025 Payment: 8 cents per word Theme: Fantasy stories of queer heroes forged and tempered in the fire, fighting dark stars and bright suns, and overthrowing tyranny in all its forms. Sword and sorcery, sweat and sandals, souls and stars. The anthology, edited by dave ring, will include pulp heroism in conversation with Samuel R. Delany's Nevèrÿon, Conan and Red Sonja, Imaro and Xena. Check out the crowdfund here. The compensation level for original stories accepted to this anthology is $0.08/word. Submit stories on Submittable between November 1st, 2024 and January 15th, 2025. Please contact us if there are any accessibility concerns for any reason and we’ll work with you. We are looking for: Wordcount: Under 6,000 words. 1-4,000 words is probably the sweet spot. Concept: Stories of queer heroes forged and tempered in the fire, fighting dark stars and bright suns, and overthrowing tyranny in all its forms. Sword and sorcery, sweat and sandals, souls and stars. What we want to see: We are looking primarily for fantasy stories on the gritty, un-epic side of things. We expect there will be a seam of the occult and cosmic horror running through the book. We’ll also probably include a couple sword and planet stories, but that won’t be the focus. We’re using the most inclusive definition of queer. Queer, trans, ace, undefinable. Throughout, we’re looking for rich, varied and nuanced understandings of gender, family and ethnicity. What we don’t want to see: We’re not interested in work which focuses on unexamined bigotry or sexual violence. While this is a darker-themed anthology, we intend to handle these subjects with care. Further vibe-check notes after getting some questions about what we are looking for: We’re probably not looking for stories set on Earth. We’re probably not...
Taking Submissions: Unholy Admissions
Deadline: January 15th, 2025 Payment: $20 for original stories, $15 for reprints, $40 to their favorite short Theme: Extreme horror Note: Reprints Welcome Dancing Griffin Press is seeking extreme horror stories for the upcoming anthology UNHOLY ADMISSIONS. We are looking for stories with limited characters and locations that feature extremely dark elements. Blood, guts, gore, etc. is more than welcome as nothing is off limits except excessive depictions of sexual violence. Violence towards children is acceptable, though we are not necessarily looking for stories with children as the main characters. Get creative! Your story can be about a newlywed couple who get attacked by a pack of rabid zombie skunks on their honeymoon or it can be about a mechanic who comes home from work and randomly snaps and kills his whole family. Gross-out stories are very much encouraged as well. Just have fun, and make sure to bring the violence. Length: Between 3,500 and 7,500 words Pay: $20 for original stories, $15 for reprints, $40 if your original story is our absolute favorite Window: November 15th - January 15th Expected publication date: March 15th, 2025 Please email stories to [email protected] with the subject “Unholy Admissions,” and attach your story or stories as .docx files. Include a short bio of yourself in the body of the email. You may enter up to three stories. Reprints of course are welcome, but please do not send us more than two reprints for consideration. Simultaneous submissions are fine, but let us know immediately if your entry needs to be pulled for any reason. Please do not use AI. Do not stress about the format – fonts, font sizes, line spacing and layouts do not matter as all of that will be changed anyway if your story is accepted. You own the rights to your story always.

We are looking for WELL-EDITED stories between 15,000-20,000 words that offer a horrific, bloody, or unique lens to view the subject of Zombies— there’s no ‘wrong’ way to answer the question “what is a zombie?” or “where do they originate?” “what is their objective?” Maybe you feel there’s zombies among us right now. Feel free to journey wherever your creativity leads you! Campfire Publishing is keeping its eye out for a wide range of chilling voices from seasoned to novice that offer unique perspectives into the chilling and often post-apocalyptic world of “Zombies”. We want twists and turns, thrills and chills; make us want to sleep with the lights turned on at night. Show us excitement, culture, and blood-curdling screams! What are we NOT looking for? We're delighted to let you know this new call for submissions is open! Please read through the submission details carefully as we’ve changed some of our guidelines and it could result in your submission not being acknowledged if you do not follow them. Witch Craft A New Collection of Folk Tales & Horror Stories We are very excited to give you advance notice of a new call for submissions on the theme of Witch Craft, for our Beyond & Within series. We’re looking for around four stories to join the selection curated by the team who brought you Folk Horror: Marie O’Regan and Paul Kane. The call is open to all, though we expect to see a greater proportion of stories by authors identifying as women. We expect the stories to deal with what it means to be ‘witch’, and the rediscovery and reclaiming of that power, its links to nature – and the exploration of whether a witch is drawn to 'good' or 'bad', and why. Stories should be in the horror and folk horror veins, and we’d like to see as wide a range as possible – the history, stigma and varying interpretations from around the world that feed into this concept should yield some exciting results... Marie O’Regan and Paul Kane are the award-winning authors and editors of many books. Together they have co-edited anthologies such as The British Fantasy Society: A Celebration, A Carnivàle of Horror: Dark Tales from the Fairground, Hellbound Hearts, The Mammoth Book of Body Horror, Exit Wounds, Wonderland (a Shirley Jackson Award finalist), Cursed, Twice Cursed and The Other Side of Never, featuring authors such as Neil Gaiman, Joanne Harris, Dean Koontz, Catriona Ward and Stephen King. Deadline: January 19th, 2025 Payment: $5 usd Theme: Splatter Friendly Horror Taking Submissions: Carnage House Issue 6 Deadline: January 19, 2025 Release Date: April 1st, 2025 Format: Online Pay: $5.00 upon publication We want solid, entertaining writing that evokes feelings. Carnage House is a splatter friendly web ’zine—so nothing against cozy, but cozy, we’re not. We’re looking for gore, extreme horror, splatterpunk, and horror with sexual elements to it. For a better understanding of what we’ll take, think of the Hot Blood book series or Love in Vein. Or, as a more practical proposition, read our back issues at carnagehouse.com. We invite LGBTQIA and BIPOC themes, and we encourage authors from diverse backgrounds to submit to us. Hard NOs: NO sex with children, NO sexualization of children, and NO child rape. If you’re writing a story about a child predator who gets what’s coming to him—great. But we don’t want to read about that predator violating his victims. We seek only original, unpublished work. No reprints, please. Also please send only one submission per issue. Our description includes the words “splatter” and “friendly” for a reason. We love splatter, and we’re super friendly. Carnage House is about supporting writers and entertaining readers, and we’re dedicated to both in equal measure. “SplatterPUNK” also contains the word “Punk.” Punk has an ethic. Punk is antifascist, anti-conservative, and anti-establishment. We are for free speech, pro-choice, freedom of expression, the freedom to read, the freedom to be weird, and the expression of political ideas in art. We look forward to reading your work in all its splattertastic glory. The Editors [email protected] Submissions: We want solid entertaining writing. That...

Taking Submissions: Waffle-Fried Issue #1
Deadline: January 20th, 2025 Payment: Contributors Copy Theme: Longing Have you ever eaten cold waffle fries in your underwear at like, 2am? No? Well, you should. Leftovers you’ve convinced yourself you’ll heat up later and eat but then just eat them by the light of the fridge – though it’s unclear why you’re in your underwear. It’s a wonderfully strange experience and that’s kind of what we’re aiming for. A wonderfully strange experience but in words and art. Got a piece that doesn’t quite fit elsewhere? We want to read it. Experimenting with format or style? Love it; send it our way. We want your abandoned words, your collection of phrases tucked away in your Notes app, that strangely-written but oddly elegant poem that doesn’t play well with others. We’re looking for hybrids, lyrics, prose, poetry; whatever you’ve got, we’ll read (within reason). Issue #1 longing noun a yearning desire Waffle Fried is currently accepting unpublished creative non-fiction, poetry, short fiction, journalism, and visual art that explores the theme of longing – whether it be for something or someone once had or never found, the tale of the one who got away, or even an overwhelming craving (for waffle fries, perhaps?). However you interpret the theme is what we’d like to see, so long as it obviously fits. Published authors and artists will receive a print copy of Issue #1, which may or may not be available for purchase. Submissions can only be sent via Duosuma. Any submission sent by email will be deleted without being read. Word count limit for fiction and creative non-fiction is 2,000 words. Poetry line limit is 30. General Guidelines While we’re open to basically anything, we do have some things we won’t tolerate or consider. Artificial Intelligence If you include AI as part of your...

They will close on January 20th, 2025 @ 10pm PST. About the Anthology Welcome to the Hearth Stories Springtime Fair! In this anthology we will be featuring stories that center around a craft, recipe, or ritual (see below for specifics). In addition to the story, each author will provide a set of instructions to make/enact the craft, recipe, or ritual that was featured in their story. The idea is that this will let readers enjoy a great story while also learning something and engaging with the story in an interesting way. The story and the instructions should be firmly related (not just a random thing to make, paired with a random story). So, what are we talking about when we talk about crafts, recipes, and rituals? Here are some examples, but you are by no means limited to these: Crafts Crochet, Knitting, Sewing, Weaving, Macrame Basketry Woodworking Smithing Jewelry Making Recipes (Vegan Only) Baking (bread, pastry, etc) Cooking (soups, sides, mains) Remedies, Medicines, Tinctures Rituals Magic or Spellcraft Meditation Yoga, Qi-Gong, Tai-Chi, etc. Ceremonies When using the above suggestions keep in mind that you can be very specific—a specific knitting pattern, for example—or you can be fairly general—an introduction to knitting, for example. If you'd like to read more about what the editor is looking for, please read her recent blog post about this. The editor has set up a #mswl which she will periodically update so best to head over there to get a good sense of what she’s looking for. The list is not meant to be exhaustive but to give writers an idea of the sorts of manuscripts we are looking for. The editor is seeking manuscripts that speak to the heart of the company: Our mission is to foster strong and distinct literary voices and those who experiment with narrative, plot and structure. We are also a home for authors dabbling in the darker genres and liminal spaces. She loves language that evokes place, voice and mood, and loves when this works as a visceral entry point for the reader into a story. Some of her favourite writers are: Shirley Jackson, Daisy Johnson, Charlotte Brontë, Margaret Atwood and Franz Kafka. I love books that have clear, engaging prose from the start, and don’t sacrifice on character or story. I’m looking for novels that are close to their characters and worlds. I also like a strong authorial voice. I tend to gravitate towards fiction rooted in reality even if it incorporates genre notes....

The 100 Word Project is an ongoing project focused on 100 word stories which will be published as a monthly, themed online journal and in a yearly print anthology. Each month (except for June and December) will bring a new prompt, and on the last weekday of the month nine of the submitted drabbles for that prompt will be posted in the public-facing section of the Manawaker Patreon alongside one drabble from Manawaker EiC, CB Droege. At the end of the year, the ten stories from each of the ten prompts will be assembled into the next volume of the 100 x 100 series. The project is curated and edited by CB Droege. 100 x 100 is published by Manawaker Studio as part of their regular line of anthologies. Current prompt The Prompt for January 2025 is ‘Sun‘. The stories The only restrictions are that the stories are 100 words long (granting small leeway for different methods of counting, and not including the title (you don’t have to have a title, but we do like them)), and previously unpublished. The idea is that each contributor is writing a brand new story for each prompt as they are announced, but if you happen to have an unpublished drabble that already fits the theme, that works too. General guideline: Would you feel uncomfortabel reading the story to a group that includes at least one 12 year old child? If so, maybe it’s not right for us). Taking Submissions: Spring in the City
Deadline: January 31st, 2025 Payment: 10 cents per word Theme: Dark Speculative Fiction that takes place in a city Spring. Even in the shadows of skyscrappers, spring sees an awakening in the concrete jungle that we call "the city." Spring in the City: A Collection of Dark Speculative Fiction is an anthology that takes place in different cities around the world during the changable, unpredictable return of life from its cold slumber. Your story submission must conform to the guidelines, and feature the city—in fact, the title of each story will be the City of which you write. We are not looking for vampire/werewolf love trysts. We are looking for fantastical and horrific elements within the City itself. Because we all know—deep in our hearts—that even nightmares and fairies, monsters and ghosts, and terrors of the real and imagined call the City their home. If you are ready to submit, please scroll to the end of the page for submission Before submitting work, please read the following carefully. Submissions that do not follow the guidelines will automatically be rejected unread. How to Send Your Work: Submissions may be anonymous for specific open calls via our MOKSHA system. We do not accept submissions through postal services or email. Your manuscript must be in one of the following file forms: .doc, .docx, and .rtf The exception is when we request an author to submit a specific piece of work. Taking Submissions: Afterlives: Year’s Best Death Stories, 2024
Deadline: January 31st, 2025 Payment: Contributor's Copy and 1 cent per word Theme: Death-related fiction that was published between January 1st 2024 through December 31st 2024 Afterlives: Year’s Best Death Stories, 2024 We want to read your death-related fiction! Psychopomp will be publishing Afterlives: The Year’s Best Death Stories 2024, curated by Sheree Renée Thomas. Please read the full guidelines before submitting so you can learn about: what we’re looking for how much we’re paying what rights we are buying and how to submit Submission link below the guidelines. What We’re Looking For: We’re looking for stories specifically that have been published on and between January 1st 2024 through December 31st 2024, with a word count between 1,000 words and 19,000 words (so: short stories and novelettes) that are about death. This could mean exploring what happens to us after we die, traveling to the Underworld, Death gods, Death personified, metaphors for death, grieving, funerals, graves, stories based on death myths from cultures across the world, death magic, ghosts, resurrection, and so on. We specifically are not interested in stories that are centered around: the traditional Christian afterlife/pearly gates zombies Note: in our experience publishing The Deadlands, we know that a lot of people interpret “stories about death” to mean slasher/true crime/gore-y horror. We are not opposed to horror as a genre, but it should be ABOUT death, not just MURDERING PEOPLE. Stories should be previously published online, in print, in audio, or via email subscriber list, by a magazine or press (that you don’t own). Stories published via your own Patreon, blog, or tumblr are not eligible. If the story will be printed before 12/31/24, but has not yet appeared, you may submit the work as soon as you have the final edited version. We will be accepting submissions through January 31, 2025. We DO...
Taking Submissions: Silk and Foxglove – A BIPOC Anthology
Deadline: January 31st, 2025 Payment: $0.01 USD per word and a contributors copy Theme: Eco-horror Note: BIPOC authors only Z. K. Abraham (she/her) is a writer and psychiatrist. She has been published in Clarkesworld, The Rumpus, Fantasy Magazine, FIYAH Magazine, JMWW, and more. She will be a Royal Literary Fund Reading Round lector for 2024-2025. She is represented by Carleen Geisler at ArtHouse Literary Agency. Read Abraham's interview here! Eco-horror explores the idea of nature becoming the source of terror; in an article for MUBI, Danielle Burgos describes eco-horror as “nature becomes uncanny and maliciously turned against man.” In a Teen Vogue article “Ecosexuals are Queering Environmentalism,” musician Peaches describes Mother Earth as a lover. “Sex-ecologist” Annie Sprinkle amusingly reflects on how “all this wood here is very sensual.” Ecosexuality might include, “masturbating with water pressure, using eco-friendly lubricant, or literally having sex with a tree.” Nature as setting or character contains so much possibility for the sensual and horrifying. Nature is inherently physical and erotic; we are stripped down to our most grounded, raw selves in nature. We can experience the tactile and sensual when we touch plants, bark, earth, when we smell flowers, when we feel the shift in temperature or moisture in the air. However, nature contains decay as well as growth. Shadows move between distant trees, while legends and folktales come to life in forests and valleys and deserts. In nature’s beauty, there is a sense of power beyond our grasp, an awe-inspiring terror, as well as a delicate intimacy. With this anthology, we are looking for stories between 1500 to 4000 words (firm) that explore eco-horror with a sexy or erotic spin. Please note that for this call, we will only be considering submissions from BIPOC authors. Additionally, while a portion of the anthology will be from...
