Taking Submissions: Nerve-Janglers: Thirteen Tales of Terror
Deadline: February 28th, 2022 Payment: £25 Theme: All forms of horror, ideally stories that take place outside of suburban America We are now officially open for submissions to our second anthology and our first young adult horror anthology, titled Nerve-Janglers: Thirteen Tales of Terror. We will be seeking horror fiction of all forms and flavours, all sub-genres and themes, that specifically fall into the category of teen-grade young adult fiction. These will be published as part of a new and ongoing YA horror imprint from Night Terror Novels Publishing, titled Nerve-Janglers. Our cover art will be finalised and uploaded to this page in the near future. If this has piqued your interest, please scroll down for the full details! What are We Looking For? We are looking for original and unpublished fictional stories that run the gamut of the horror genre and all its assorted sub-genres—we’re open to it all, so long as it has a strong horror twist flowing through its veins. Since the Nerve-Janglers series is aiming to offer varied slices of horror, you can really go wild as far as settings, storylines and themes go. We are especially keen to read stories that take place outside of suburban America (though they are still welcome too, of course!), and would love to read stories featuring LGBTQIA+ characters. The only concrete rules for consideration are that the story must fall within the classification of teen-grade young adult fiction and must adhere to our guidelines detailed below. As this is a young adult anthology, it is important for all submitting authors to understand what teen-grade YA fiction does and doesn’t include. Your best bet for a successful submission is to know the genre and what we are aiming for here, or to be familiar with the YA horror franchises we are paying homage to—including Goosebumps, Fear Street, Point Horror and Shivers. Please also refer to the Wikipedia page on the genre if...
Taking Submissions: Queer Weird West Tales
Deadline: Febraury 28th, 2022 Payment: a flat fee of between $30 and $50 USD will be offered. Theme: Speculative fiction that takes place in the wild west that has at least one main character belongs to the LGBTQ+ spectrum I’ve written a Queer Weird West novel, titled Writ in Blood – and frankly I just haven’t had enough yet! Hence this call for submissions to a new anthology titled Queer Weird West Tales. This hybrid subgenre requires three elements: Queer: At least one main character belongs to the LGBTQ+ spectrum, defined in whatever way seems natural to them. Weird: The story contains a speculative fiction element, drawing on fantasy, horror, or science fiction. West: The setting is the Old West – or the time and place of any other frontier. If that strikes a creative chord with you, here are the details: Editor: Julie Bozza Content: Fiction and narrative nonfiction welcome. Sexual encounters are welcome, and can be explicit, but the focus must remain on character and story. Similarly, violence and the results thereof can be vividly described, but should always serve the story. Word count: Between 3,000 and 10,000 words. Royalties: A flat fee of between $30 and $50 USD will be offered. Deadline: Submissions due by 28 February 2022, either directly or via Duotrope. Publication: Planned for July 2022, in eBook and paperback formats. Enquiries: [email protected] I would be happy to hear about what you have in mind for your submission, and to talk through any queries or concerns you might have along the way. If you’re interested in my credentials, I’m proud to have edited the anthologies A Pride of Poppies (2015) and A Certain Persuasion (2016) for Manifold Press. I’m looking forward to reading your bodacious tales! Ideas and Inspiration… If you’re looking to ponder the possibilities, here’s a random list of watching and reading material, both fiction...
Taking Submissions: Moon: The Book of Lunar Horror
Deadline: February 28th, 2022. Payment: $10 per story, in exchange for nonexclusive publishing rights. Theme: “Lunar horror and isolation.” See below for details. Note: Reprints Welcome Deadline: February 28th, 2022. Payment: $10 per story, in exchange for nonexclusive publishing rights. Theme: “Lunar horror and isolation.” See below for details. Word count: 2,000 to 5,000 words. This is very flexible, especially for longer stories, but please get in touch before sending something smaller or larger. Reprints: Yes! Please, for the love of God, send me reprints. $10 is just a token payment, and I know it. Simultaneous submissions: Yes. Multiple submissions: Yes—limit of 2 per author. “MOON: The Book of Lunar Horror” is going to be a bit of an art project, really. In addition to stories, I’m going to be looking for art and poetry (separately from this submissions call), working with neural nets, and trying to do some interesting things with the format and layout. I am working on a tight budget here, so reprints are completely acceptable. Theme The theme for this anthology is “lunar horror and isolation.” What that means is flexible: “a team of scientists on the moon discovers something terrible” is as viable as “survivalist cult living in the backcountry, haunted by some monstrosity which comes out only in the moonlight” or “big city shut-in who is tormented by visions of the moon.” I am especially interested in Eugene Thacker’s contrast between “the world as humans interpret it” and “the world as it is, beyond human needs and human understanding,” and cosmic pessimism in general. I have a short primer on Eugene Thacker here, if that’s up your alley, but other approaches to the theme are equally valid. If your story doesn’t currently fit the theme, but you think that you can revise the story and introduce the necessary elements, then send it in anyway,...

Taking Submissions: Triangulation: Energy
Deadline: February 28th, 2022 Payment: 3¢ per word Theme: Stories that explore the possibility of creating sustainable energy with alternative technologies and/or social change. Triangulation: Energy – Call for Submissions and Guidelines Beginning December 1, 2021, the annual Triangulation anthology will accept submissions for Triangulation: Energy. We continue to tackle environmental issues as we did with Triangulation: Dark Skies (light pollution), Triangulation: Extinction (loss of biodiversity), and Triangulation: Habitats (sustainable habitation). The theme this year will be energy, sustainable energy. We’re looking for outstanding fantasy, science fiction, weird fiction, and speculative horror–from both new and established writers. Editors: John Thompson, Co-editor Triangulation: Habitats, Assistant Editor, Triangulation: Extinction. Storm Walden, Assistant Editor, Triangulation: Habitats. This year we’re looking for stories that explore the possibility of creating sustainable energy with alternative technologies and/or social change. Economical fusion energy has been ten years away for sixty years. Hydroelectric is location dependant. Solar and wind have seen leaps and bounds in technology but by themselves can’t provide the steady flow the grid requires to distribute the load. Yet. As soon as we learned to control fire, anywhere from one to two million years ago depending on who you ask, we’ve been harnessing that energy to cook food, shape stone, keep warm, keep the sabertooth away, and move stuff around the planet. Ever since then, we’ve been merrily burning everything combustible to utilize its stored energy while pouring heat and waste particles into the atmosphere. Forests of wood, mountains of coal, lakes of natural gas, and seas of petroleum have gone up. We delve deeper, raze mountains, we race to consume the Earth’s resources at a rate that is changing our environment. We need to find a new balance, either through technology, or social change, or a combination of both. What else is on the horizon? Will great Bussard...

We’re looking for short stories, flash fiction, and poetry that runs the gamut of everything from absurdist horror to bizarre science-fiction to unsettling dark fantasy. We love the uncanny; what we look for is the telling drop in your stomach when you absently look up at the skies and there are far more constellations than you’d remembered, brighter and closer and in configurations you don’t quite recall. We want stories about the bleed error of the universe printing outside the margins of reality. We are interested in stories with LGBTQ2S+ and diverse leads, especially with narratives that are not confined to tragedy tropes. • What do we not want? Please don’t send us anything bigoted or hateful, we’d all be wasting our time. At this point we’re not seeking photography or art. We do not take reprints, including translations. Previously published works on personal websites count as reprints. • How much do we pay? We pay 1c per word, and $15 per poem, regardless of length. • What about word limits? Taking Submissions: Contrary Spring 2022 Issue
Deadline: March 1st, 2022 Payment: $20 Theme: We ask our fiction writers to imagine their readers navigating a story with one finger poised over a mouse button. Can your story stay that finger to the end? “Turning words into art is unnatural. It begins with a contrary attitude. It says, I am unhappy with the way things are and desire to make things different. Rather than represent the world, I will make something wildly and savagely new. I will defy logic. I will invest in new perceptions. I will combine and recombine and fabricate and juggle until something that I have never experienced is experienced. The process is alchemical. The process is violent. It goes to the heart of creativity. It disrupts and shatters. It is splendid with provocation. It is an aggression against banality. It is sharp and loud like a janitor scraping frost from a window. The hectic bounce of steam on a street after a truck roars by. The anarchy of waters, the comedy of the face, dangerous feelings vented from a cage of skin.” ~ John Olson Poetry — We believe poetry is contrary by nature, always defying, always tonguing the tang of novelty. We look especially for plurality of meaning, for dual reverberation of beauty and concern. Contrary’s poetry in particular often mimics the effects of fiction or commentary. We find ourselves enamored of prose poems because they are naturally contrary toward form – they tug on the forces of exposition or narrative – but prose poems remain the minority of all the poetic forms we publish. Please consider that Contrary receives vast amounts of poetry and that we can publish only a small percentage of that work. Please submit no more than three poems per issue. Our poetry editor is Shaindel Beers. Fiction — We ask our fiction writers to imagine...

Taking Submissions: Mermaidens
Deadline: March 1st, 2022 Payment: Royalties Theme: Stories about mermaids The thing about mermaids is they have a tail problem. It seems they either want to get rid of their tail so they can walk on land, or they want to get their tail back, having somehow lost it so they could be on land. Or, they fell in love with someone who doesn’t have a tail… It never seems to end. All we know for sure, is that it’s a problem. Submission dates January 15, 2022 to March 1, 2022 We want stories about mermaids. All kinds of stories about mermaids. Be creative! There are no genre restrictions on this anthology, however the main premise of Mermaidens implies water-dwelling, fish-tailed women. Please keep this in mind if your story does not contain those elements. It will be up to the editors to decide if a non water-dwelling, un-fish-tailed woman (or merman) fits the theme well enough. For this anthology, please no extreme horror or sex. Please keep content and language limited to the equivalent of a “PG-13” rated movie. We want to be able to share this with our mothers and children. Please remember, Knight Writing Press will not accept a story that glorifies, supports, encourages, or gratuitously includes hate, hate crimes, rape, sex, sex crimes, or any other forms of inhumanity. While we know it is tempting to walk those lines with mermaids being “sirens” who lure men, do not send us stories about rape, torture, or abusive mind control unless you are showing the consequences and why it shouldn’t be done. Even then, we probably don’t want to see it. This anthology is supposed to fun escapism, not an outlet for high-handed morality stories nor mentally masturbative abusers. Please make sure you read and follow all submission guidelines and...

This one comes from the guts; we’ll figure out the rest as we go along. We are now accepting submissions for Your Body is Not Your Body: A New Weird Horror Anthology to combat Texas’ attempts to criminalize Trans youth. All proceeds from the sale of this anthology will go directly to Equality Texas (https://www.equalitytexas.org/). ***EDIT 02.24.22***: a multitude of generous Horror fans have begun contributing to a creator compensation fund, so this project WILL NOW be paying all accepted creators; we don’t want to speculate as to the amount, but it will be something. If you are interested in contributing to this creator compensation fund, donate here. Alright, so what do we want? *4,000 words maximum (no minimum) *Reprints are acceptable, but we need to know the original place of publication. No more than two submissions per creator, please. *Genre: New Weird Horror. What that means to us: the immediacy of classic Pulp Horror with a deeper dive into the human condition and an (un)healthy injection of Surrealism. We love Magical Realism, Body Horror, Optimistic Nihilism, Folk Horror, genre splicing of all stripes. Needless to say: feel free to let your political rage and righteous anger runneth over. Today is a day for Big Weird Sledgehammers, not subtlety (though we love quiet Weird Horror too!) *Trans and Gender Non-Conforming creators only, please. Alex and I are grateful beyond words that so many folks are standing up as allies alongside us, but for this project it...

Taking Submissions: The Last Five Minutes of a Storm
Deadline: March 7th, 2022 Payment: €150 Theme: stories that look upon the world with a mind of winter and behold nothing that is not there and the nothing that is (paraphrasing The Snowman). Note: Apologies for the short window, this just hit my inbox! From Jan 25th to March 7th, we are open for short story submissions for our new collection, The Last Five Minutes of a Storm! We are looking for stories of all genres that respond to our title and/or cover art, and writers will receive a flat rate of €150 for accepted submissions. For our first anthology of 2022, we are taking inspiration from Wallace Stevens’ poetry, and asking for stories that look upon the world with a mind of winter and behold nothing that is not there and the nothing that is (paraphrasing The Snowman). For our prompt, we are looking for short stories that reflect our title: The Last Five Minutes of a Storm. As always, you can also take inspiration from the artwork we've chosen for the cover, created by artist Pedro Vó! We are looking for emotional responses to the title and/or the cover – stories that come from the specific place of mind they take you to. (if in doubt, make a cup of tea and read Thirteen Ways of Looking at a Blackbird). The Last Five Minutes of a Storm How does it feel to be in the eye of the hurricane? What does it mean to know that the storm will vanish very soon, if only you can hold on a second longer? Now that the monster is defeated, can the hero make it out of the maze? Do they still want to? We are not requesting any specific genres for this edition, so they are all welcome – sci-fi,...

Taking Submissions Wyngraf Spring 2022 Window (Early Listing)
Submission Window: March 1st-8th 2022 Payment: $0.01 (one cent) per word Theme: Cozy fantasy Wyngraf is currently closed to submissions. Our next submission window opens March 1st, 2022 and ends March 8th, 2022. Wyngraf buys First North American Serial Rights to short stories of cozy fantasy from 4,000 to 10,000 words long. We currently pay $0.01 (one cent) per word. We know that’s not much, and we hope to increase our rate as soon as possible. Wyngraf Is Fantasy Often fantasy means the presence of magic, but not always—for example, Ellen Kushner’s Swordspoint. Low-magic and no-magic stories are welcome at Wyngraf. Stories should have a pre-modern technology level. Wyngraf isn’t interested in science fiction or urban fantasy. (Well, we are, but not for this magazine.) Our cutoff is roundabout the early 19th century. Think Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell. This is probably flexible. We want secondary worlds. Wyngraf doesn’t publish stories set on our Earth, either now or in the past (historical fantasy). We want our readers to be transported to the worlds of your imagination! We prefer high fantasy to fairy tales. This isn’t a hard rule, but we’d rather see creatures from high fantasy (elves, dwarves, halflings, etc.) than folk tales (werewolves, vampires, leprechauns, etc.). Things we’ve never seen before are even better. Human-only settings are welcome. Wyngraf Is Cozy We define cozy as a sense of comfort, hominess, welcoming, and friendship. Community. Relationships. You know: cozy. Setting is an essential part of coziness. We love all sorts of fantastical settings: bustling city, decrepit castle, sailing ship, welcoming inn, busy caravanserai, witch’s cottage, wizard’s tower, farming village, school for bards, adventurer’s guild hall… The setting should be somewhere the reader would like to be transported. Think of your first time discovering the Shire, or dreaming of your own Hogwarts acceptance letter. We invite you to spend a few extra...

Taking Submissions: Eye to the Telescope #44
Deadline: March 15th, 2022 Payment: US 3¢/word rounded up to nearest dollar; minimum US $3, maximum $25 Theme: Notional Ekphrasis Eye to the Telescope 44, Notional Ekphrasis, will be edited by F. J. Bergmann. Ekphrastic poetry consists of poems based on visual art; “Musée des Beaux Arts” by W. H. Auden is a classic example. The work does not necessarily need to be described in the poem, nor is it considered necessary to view the image in order to appreciate the resultant poem. Notional works of art are those that do not actually exist; fiction (and poetry) are replete with instances of these; another classic example is “My Last Duchess” by Robert Browning. Notional exphrastic poems, therefore, would be poems inspired by works of art that exist only in your own imagination (or that of others), from any period in time or space. We are eager to read what you send! Submission Guidelines SUBMISSION INSTRUCTIONS Use the form at to submit. Please submit 1–3 poems in English (ideally, attached as .docx or .txt) and include a short bio. Translations from other languages are acceptable with the permission of the original poet (unless public domain). Inquiries only to [email protected] with “ETTT” in the subject line. Deadline: March 15. The issue will appear on April 15, 2022. Payment and rights Accepted poems will be paid for at the following rate: US 3¢/word rounded up to nearest dollar; minimum US $3, maximum $25. Payment is on publication. The Science Fiction & Fantasy Poetry Association normally uses PayPal to pay poets, but can also send checks. Eye to the Telescope is an online publication. Therefore, First Electronic Rights (for original unpublished poems) are being sought. Who can submit? Anyone writing speculative poetry. What is Speculative Poetry? Speculative poetry is poetry which falls within the genres of science fiction, fantasy, and supernatural horror, plus some related genres such as magic realism,...

There are several whispers calling your name, and whoever is watching you doesn't want you to leave. The looming threat is quite common in one of the most chilling subgenres of horror: folk horror. The genre blends the themes of horror and folklore to explore terror, alienation, displacement, and a sense of the other. Folk horror invokes fear using the elements of folklore. President of what you say? A country? The universe? The local PTA? A paramilitary group of insurrectionist witches? Your choice. Your vision must look through the lenses of speculative fiction. Taking Submissions: Snafu: Dead or Alive (Early Listing)
Submission Window: January 1st - March 31st, 2022 Payment: AU5c/word Theme: Weird Western action horror AU5c/word / 2k-10k words Opens Jan 1st 2022/ Closes March 31st 2022 (in your time zone) Fantasy, Horror, or Science Fiction Theme – Weird Western action horror. WHAT WE WANT ACTION-BASED horror, themed within conflict in the wild, wild West. Think Bone Tomahawk, Ravenous, Westworld, Cowboys & Aliens and The Burrowers for films, and Dead in the West by Joe Lansdale, Deadlands: Ghostwalkers by Jonathan Maberry, Skin Medicine by Tim Curran, and The Crossings by Jack Ketchum for writings… anything that can be considered a high-action monster story set within an obviously Western theme. For level of unnatural creature we will give priority to, think Dog Soldiers or Aliens in oldie times. We want lots of monster goodness and lots of action. We will also be looking for soldiers/cavalry, bandit gangs (or bandidos, for south of the border), sheriffs, private security for gold claims. Hell, even a group of bodyguards protecting some arsehole business overlord in his desert property. Just ensure the action is central to the story, from start to finish, and don’t forget monsters! This volume is like the previous volumes squared. All action. We want extreme action, and it really should be in the style of military or paramilitary action, although we definitely see cowboys or a posse or bandit gang or demon hunters as suitable in this theme. And to say it again, full action. Nothing less. Hoo-rah! We actively encourage submissions from all cultural backgrounds, ethnicities, and identities. Storytelling is for everyone, and we are richer for it when all voices are heard. SOME GUIDANCE – IF YOU TAKE THIS PLOT PATH, IT BETTER BE DAMNED GOOD: Wendigo tales. These are the most common of things in weird westerns, and just like Highlander, there can be only one! Good cowboys versus bad First Nation People. This is an almost impossible sell....

Deadline: March 31st 2022 Payment: £6.66 Theme: Original, unpublished stories of up to 2022 words (horror/dark/speculative fiction) on any topic, in any style set in 2022. I think we can all agree, a lot of 2021 has been rubbish. But what horrors might 2022 contain? Calling prophets, all soothsayers, all predictors of doom! We're seeking original, unpublished stories of up to 2022 words (horror/dark/speculative fiction) on any topic, in any style. (Word count does not include title.) The one rule, and here's the tricky part...your story should be set in 2022. We don't want one hundred stories all about coronavirus though, so think outside of the box! (Although, if you do have an exceptional story to tell us about the 'vid, please do submit it.) Elements of fantasy, sci-fi, and any other genre are fine, as long as the main theme is horror. We will pay £6.66 for each selected story. An anthology of selected stories will be published in print and as an e-book publication. See our 'Submission Guidelines' section for information on how to submit. Deadline: March 31st 2022 (midnight, last place on earth) or until full. Via: Bag Of Bones Press.
Meerkat Press Is Open To Novel Submissions
Deadline: March 31st, 21022 Payment: Royalty-based payments for novels, and in some cases, an advance against royalties. Theme: Speculative Fiction NO: Swords & Sorcery Fantasy / Epic Fantasy / Young Adult / Middle Grade Submissions for 2024 will open on January 1st, 2022 and close on March 31st, 2022. We are currently booked through 2023 so we’re temporarily closed for submissions. Please read carefully as we have updated what we will be accepting in our next open submission period. We publish approximately four books per year. The odds of having a book accepted by Meerkat Press are very, very low just based on the number of submissions compared to the number of books we publish. We don’t just encourage, we insist on simultaneous submissions as we would hate for your hard work to be tied up here based on the time it takes us to get through submissions and that most books will be rejected. We are looking for original stories that make our brains engage, our breaths catch and our hearts thud. We want stories that keep us up all night reading and leave us begging for more. Stories we can’t shake long after reading. Give us fresh voices, unique/flawed characters, imaginative story lines, and diversity in characters and settings (and authors!) Our catalog does have a high percentage of speculative fiction and darker themes, but that’s not all we publish, so please read carefully: If you have a completed work that fits the description in one of the categories below, we hope you will submit it for consideration. We do not sign contracts for work that has not yet been written so as much as your pitch for unwritten work may be interesting, it will just clutter our inbox and we don’t respond to pitches that don’t have a completed...

Generally net price is less any payment processing fees or platform fees. Whatever we get here, you get half of. Anthologies or products with multiple authors have different terms (generally a lesser commitment in terms of publishing rights and a one-time fee). WHAT WE DON’T WANT We want horror, dark or gothic themes to carry the stories. If the story doesn’t have those, we likely aren’t the best fit for it. Taking Submissions: Grandpa’s Deep-Space Diner
Digital Generated Image Deadline: March 31st, 2022. Payment: $5 USD per 1000 words Theme: Speculative fiction food stories! My grandpa had a drive-in diner in Rupert, Idaho in the 60s called Chuck's In-and-Out. It was well known and all the kids went there. My aunt served the burgers (sans roller-skates—Grandma put a stop to that notion! ) and Grandma made the best french fry sauce in the galaxy. Grandpa taught me that food, from the production to the preparation to the partaking, could be a simple personal pleasure or a means of bringing groups together in a shared meal. This book is dedicated to him. Miss you, Grampsy. Whether you're growing your produce in a magical garden, storing your rations in your lunar bunker, or enjoying a delightful picnic in the outer rings of Saturn, we want your speculative fiction food stories! Submissions deadline: March 31, 2022. NOTE: We are currently only accepting short stories for the anthologies and cannot accept full-length novel manuscripts at this time. ** Please put the anthology you're submitting to in the subject line of the email!** Payment for stories will be $5 USD per 1000 words for all current anthologies (excepting contests). We're looking for speculative fiction across all anthologies (unless otherwise specified). That includes everything from high fantasy to hard scifi and anything in between. We do accept reprints, simultaneous submissions, and multiple submissions, though these will slow down our response time. Story lengths should be anywhere from flash-length to about 15k words, but we have at times made exceptions. We know a story is complete when it's complete, and arbitrary word count requirements are not always helpful. If you have an amazing story that exceeds 15k words, let us know. We may be able to make special accommodations. :) With regard to copyright, we...
Taking Submissions: Shredded: A Sports and Fitness Body Horror Anthology (Early Listing)
Submission Window: March 1st, 2022 – March 31st, 2022 Payment: $.03 USD per word Theme: Body horror in sports and fitness Note: Extended submission period for women and non-binary writers is April 1st – 7th, 2022. This fiction anthology from Eric Raglin (writer of NIGHTMARE YEARNINGS, editor of ANTIFA SPLATTERPUNK) will feature stories of body horror in sports and fitness. Submit your most grotesque, strange, frightening, and thought-provoking stories—ones with complex characters, unapologetic weirdness, and horror that takes bold narrative risks. *Before reading the rest of the submission guidelines, note that the existence of this project is contingent on the success of its Kickstarter campaign. Consider donating a few bucks or sharing the campaign link.* Submissions are open to all writers, but I especially encourage submissions from writers of marginalized groups. Note that some writers have specifically been invited to contribute. The anthology will be a mix of solicited stories and stories selected from the open call submission period. Stories should be between 2,000 and 4,500 words. Multiple submissions are not allowed. Simultaneous submissions are allowed, but withdraw your submission immediately if it gets accepted elsewhere. No reprints. Open for submissions March 1st, 2022 – March 31st, 2022. The extended submission period for women and non-binary writers is April 1st – 7th, 2022. I will announce accepted submissions by April 15th, 2022. Anthology will be published as both an electronic and print book in July 2022. OTHER SUBMISSION CONSIDERATIONS If you’re retreading old ground and well-established tropes, make it fresh. I’m fine with horror that has erotic elements, but emphasis should be on the horror. Don’t be moralizing. I want nuance. Stories that deal with bigotry are fine, but bigoted stories are not. I don’t want stories with graphic depictions of sexual violence. It’s a body horror anthology, so I’m fine with gore...
Taking Submissions: Troubadours and Space Princesses
Deadline: March 31st, 2022 Payment: Contributor's Copy (charity anthology) Theme: Stories of troubadours, minstrels, and bards teaming up with princesses feisty and bold. Scifi or Fantasy Since its beginnings in the early 1980s, the Life, the Universe, & Everything Symposium has been a staple of the Utah and Intermountain West author and artist community. Many authors, artists, and editors have found inspiration for their careers at the feet of scores of symposium guests. Influential professors and others have mentored those planning and running the symposium, but many of these mentors have passed on. The symposium helps students of all ages by providing greatly discounted student memberships. Hemelein Publications—in conjunction with LTUE Press—created a series of memorial benefit/charity anthologies to help the symposium continue to help these aspiring creators learn about their crafts at a reasonable cost. Author, artist, and editor royalty proceeds from the anthology go to LTUE to help students attend for a very low cost. The sixth of these anthologies, Troubadours and Space Princesses, is a science fiction and fantasy adventure anthology, created in honor of Dave Wolverton. Best known under his pseudonym David Farland, Dave passed away in January 2022. He was a fixture at LTUE from the beginning. He mentored many, many writers and artists through his workshops, his work with Writers and Illustrators of the Future, conferences and conventions, and just personally. He was always kind and generous with his time and knowledge. Theme At heart, Dave was a storyteller, a spinner of yarns fantastic. To honor his memory and connection with LTUE, we want stories of troubadours, minstrels, and bards teaming up with princesses feisty and bold. We want them to save the kingdom or the spaceship, or maybe only the tavern or spaceport bar, or even just the cat. We want tales of adventure and mischief. But most of all, we want...

Submissions are open from January 1, 2022 to March 31, 2022. Your story must be an original, never-before-published creation that centers around this theme. You must include some sort of abandonment, whether real or virtual, that concludes by the end of the story to meet the theme requirements. You cannot write in anyone else’s world. Otherwise, have fun and let your imagination dominate. A videographer meets a ghost in a haunted house. A lone explorer finds an abandoned spaceship. Taking Submissions: Bioluminescent: A Lunarpunk Anthology
March 31st, 2022 Payment: $.08 per word + contributor copy Theme: Lunarpunk Story Length: 500 to 7,500 words Story Payment: at least $.08 per word + contributor copy Poem Length: 5 poems or 5 pages Poetry Payment: $30 per poem + contributor copy Submissions Open: March 1 - 31, 2022 Expected Publication: 2023 Editor: Justine Norton-Kertson This will arguably be the first Lunarpunk anthology to be produced. As such, it is an opportunity for you, as an author, to help guide and define a relatively new science fiction subgenre. Please read the full guidelines before submitting. The submission link is at the end of these guidelines What is Luarpunk? Lunarpunk is a relatively new subgenre of science fiction and fantasy that is closely related to and is an offshoot of Solarpunk. Like it’s sibling subgenre, Lunarpunk tells optimistic and hopeful stories about future societies led by genuinely diverse communities and powered by renewable energy, where nature and technology coexist in harmony rather than in conflict. It’s is a subgenre that’s about restoring the web of life that connects us all. It’s about a desire to protect all life, not just human life. It’s about the drive to embrace and empower life, and restore the planet. Lunarpunk futures aren’t usually “perfect” utopias. Such a thing will never actually exist. But even when lunarpunk communities come close to that ideal, they are still never without conflict and challenges. One thing is certain though, lunarpunk societies are absolutely not dystopias. If lunarpunk and solarpunk societies haven’t yet reached some sort of utopian ideal, then the communities in these stories have still either solved, or are at least in the process of optimistically working together to solve or adapt to the climate crisis and other global challenges. They are consciously...

Taking Submissions: The Cafe Irreal Spring Window 2022
Deadline: April 1st, 2022 Payment: One cent U.S. per word ($2 minimum) Theme: Fantastic Fiction You really NEED to read the description below. The Cafe Irreal is a quarterly webzine that presents a kind of fantastic fiction infrequently published in English. This fiction, which we would describe as irreal, resembles the work of writers such as Franz Kafka, Kobo Abe, Clarice Lispector and Jorge Luis Borges. As a type of fiction it rejects the tendency to portray people and places realistically and the need for a full resolution to the story; instead, it shows us a reality constantly being undermined. Therefore, we're interested in stories by writers who write about what they don't know, take us places we couldn't possibly go, and don't try to make us care about the characters. We would also suggest you take a look at the current issue, archives, and theory (especially the essay, "What is irrealism?") pages on this web site. We accept unsolicited fiction up to 2,000 words in length. Translations are welcome. There is no minimum length. We accept only electronic submissions via e-mail at [email protected]. We cannot, due to the various computer viruses and worms, accept attachments anymore, so please paste your story into the body of the e-mail. Also include your name, address, e-mail address, and a short bio in the text of the submission; please put the word "submission" in the subject heading of the e-mail to ensure that your submission doesn't get lost among all the spam. We pay an honorarium of one cent U.S. per word ($2 minimum) to buy first-time internet rights (the story will then be archived). Payment is made upon publication. PLEASE NOTE THAT WE DON'T ACCEPT SIMULTANEOUS SUBMISSIONS and are only interested in reprints in unusual cases (e.g., the story has appeared in print but...
