Taking Submissions: Under The Bed
Deadline: January 30th, 2012 Payment: An eBook copy will be sent to all contributors and up to 5 paperback copies per author will be available to purchase at cost. 50% of the royalties will be distributed between all contributors. UNDER THE BED They haunt us all. Those whispered tales of monsters hiding under the bed, or of the demons lurking in the shadowy corner where we dare not glance for fear that seeing them will make them all too real. Oh, how the innocent landscape of a child’s imagination lends fertile soil to horrors ready to be sown on the slightest of sounds; the tales and the terror they wreak on our youthful minds never quite leaves us. Reach into the forgotten recesses of your twisted mind. Share with us the tales of nightmares that can only thrive in the hidden corners of a child’s imaginings; the bogeyman under the bed, the outlandishly fiendish clown perched upon a rocker, the slight murmur of sound coming from the closet… did you close the door completely? Explore the myriad terrors that only a child can twist from nothing into some ‘thing’ in the span of a single rapid breath. Do you dare delve into your own memories for inspiration? Perhaps you’ll start sleeping with the lights on again... Tell us, who is Under the Bed? Submission guidelines; Deadline for submissions - Monday, January 30th, 2012. 4000 - 10,000 words. Please submit your manuscript as a *.doc or *.docx file in Verdana; 12 point font; single spacing and standard formatting. Graphic gore must be kept to a minimum unless it is integral to the story; absolutely no incestuous or sexual abuse storylines will be considered. Only stories previously unpublished may be submitted. Upon acceptance into the anthology, you agree that Sirens Call Publications...

Taking Submissions: Dark Faith 2
Dark Faith 2 Deadline: January 31st 2012 Payment: 5 cents a word, up to 4000 words Apex will be publishing a follow-up to the Nebula, Bram Stoker, and Black Quill-nominated anthology Dark Faith. The book will be 80,000 words and pay five cents a word (up to four thousand words). It will debut late-summer 2012. We buy First World anthology print rights and digital rights (for three years). We’re looking for the story only you could write, something deeply personal and at the same time universal. Everyone believes in something and we want you to put those beliefs to the test. We’re looking for smart, literate stories that don’t proselytize or stereotype. Stories that make you think, that comment on the human condition and the social order. Stories that are rich in their use of language. However, as much as we love social commentary, don’t forget to entertain us. The best way to get a feel for what we’re looking for is to read Dark Faith. Submissions will be accepted from 1/1/2012 until 1/31/2012. Unsolicited stories received outside this timeframe will be deleted, unread. Please include a cover letter with your submission–even if we know you. Please send no more than one submission at a time. No reprints. Simultaneous submissions will be accepted as long as you tell us up front (and immediately withdraw the story if you sell it). All submissions must be emailed as an RTF file to Maurice Broaddus and Jerry Gordon at [email protected].

We’re looking for submissions of between two and eight thousand words of dark fiction on the loose theme of “the power of the mind”. Please e-mail your submissions to [email protected] formatting your story in .doc or RTF format. Manuscripts should be double spaced, 12pt Times New Roman and use Italics, Bold or Underline as required. Please also supply a brief biography which will be included in the book if you are successful. Payment is a flat rate of £10, on acceptance by Paypal, plus a contributor’s copy of the book. Taking Submissions: King David & the Spiders from Mars
King David & the Spiders from Mars Deadline: January 31st, 2012 Payment: $50 advance against equal share of royalties - to be paid out no later than publication. Due to the positive response to She Nailed a Stake Through His Head: Tales of Biblical Terror, I will be editing another Bible-themed anthology. Tentatively titled King David & The Spiders from Mars: More Tales of Biblical Terror, this will be a Bible-themed horror anthology specifically based on The Book of Samuel. Some of my favorite stories from the first anthology were David centered including Elissa Malcohn's "Judgement at Naioth" and Christi Krug's "As If Favorites of Their God." What I'm Looking For: Short stories, ideally between 1000-12000 words. All stories must be based in some way on the book of Samuel (usually edited to be 1 & 2) which is the story about how Israel transitioned from a Judge based society to a kingdom under King David. Even though this is primarily a horror anthology, I'm willing to look at stories that fall into different categories including bizarro, science fiction, fantasy, literary and romance (although if you write a romance between Tamar and Amnon, I'm going to be worried about you and not in a good way). There are several stories within Samuel including the madness of Saul, the end of Eli's family as the major priesthood, David & Goliath and the death of Absalom so feel free to use whatever inspires you. Also, even though the Book of Ruth is a completely different book, it serves as a prequel to the David saga so if you got a great Ruth story, I will read it. Check out this Amazon List for reading suggestions. Please at least read the book of Samuel once to get the flavor of the stories. If...
Taking Submissions: Suction Cup Dreams: An Octopus Anthology
Suction Cup Dreams: An Octopus Anthology Deadline: January 31, 2012 Payment: $20 and 1 Contributor's Copy What We Want SUCTION CUP DREAMS: An Octopus Anthology, features ca. 15 short fiction stories dealing with the most fascinating and noble of marine lifeforms, the octopus. We welcome all subgenres and forms of fiction, spanning genres and styles, from romance, historical fiction, crime dramas, to sci-fi horror. We are looking for short stories which either showcase or are inspired by the octopus as a central theme. Deadline for submissions is January 31, 2012. No entries will be accepted beyond this deadline. What We Don't Want We will not accept stories which have the octopus theme obviously shoehorned in after the fact. We do not want stories about tentacled, non-octopus creatures. We do not want tales about Cthulhu - there are enough stories dedicated to him, and he isn't an octopus (although a Lovecraftian style tale would be allowed if it dealt with octopodes specifically). We are not looking for poetry. And we don't want a large amount of vulgarity or sexual perversion, though erotica is accepted. Multiple Submissions and Reprints We accept up to two (2) multiple submissions for review. Each one must be sent via its own separate email. Reprints are permissable, as long as prior publication is mentioned and described in the cover letter. Pay Rate We offer one contributor's copy of the book as payment. How to Submit Please use our submission webform to submit your manuscript. We do not accept e-mail or postal submissions except for compelling exceptions. Each submission will be reviewed and considered based on creativity, originality, concept, and style. Not all works will be accepted. We recommend tracking your submission on duotrope.com. Pendragon Press will be paying a token £10 for first World e-publication rights (which equates to roughly 1p/word). Taking Submissions: The Dead Walk Again
Deadline: January 31, 2012 Payment: Exposure Only prose fiction The Dead Walk Again is a conceptual piece oriented around a few basic concepts: A zombie apocalypse has occurred. The Dead have risen from their graves and anyone that dies from anything besides serious head trauma will reanimate as a member of the walking dead. A group of survivors somewhere in the United States have set up a website to allow very basic communication among other survivors through surviving PDA and wireless devices. That people from all over the country have sent in their personal narratives to be told on their site. I want to see an emphasis on realism whenever possible in storytelling. We are very much focused on the few survivors of a society that has shut down by zombies roaming in hordes around the country. Outside of that one conceit, the world is pretty much just a blasted out facsimile of our own. A few solid resources exist to tell what would happen to our country and world if our cities were suddenly abandoned and taken over by wildlife and can be found in the master reference list below. Zombies in the world of The Dead Walk Again are very traditional. They are shambling monstrosities with no recognizable brain function outside of walk and eat (humans). Outside of humans and dogs, they show no sign of interest in eating any traditional North American animals. They can only be killed by damage to the brain. They suffer from rot and decay, but will not continuously rot until nothing is left of their bodies. A bite from a zombie will pass the infection on. Any concerns about the nature of zombies in the world should be put towards the e-mail listed on the account below. What We Want: The Dead...

Taking Submissions: Twisted Realities: Of Myth and Monstrosity
Deadline: February 13th 2012 Payment: An eBook copy will be sent to all contributors and up to 5 paperback copies will be available for purchase at cost to each contributing author. 50% of the royalties will be distributed between all contributors. What if the worlds of horror and mythology collided; what skeletons might come tumbling out of that particular closet? Open up your mind to the possibilities of reimaged tales or the consequences of unleashing a mythological creature into today’s world. What would happen if Medusa were let loose in NYC? What would the world of mythology be like if Zeus had a penchant for torture and murder? Perhaps the Fey world holds you captivated; but you imagine the benign faerie folk to instead be frighteningly devious creatures that only exist in the darker, more sinister walks of life... Spin us a tale that will scare the reader but still maintain that magical twist from the stories of an age gone by. All mythology is open to interpretation; Greek, Roman, Fey, Chinese, Christian, plus the countless others not mentioned. Your only limitation is the one you place on yourself. * *Stories containing overt sexual content, will be immediately disqualified from consideration. Taking Submissions: Fungi
Payment: 1 cent per word for original stories and 1 contributor's copy Deadline: February 15th 2012 Orrin Grey and Silvia Moreno-Garcia tackle the darkest of all horrors: fungi. William Hope Hodgson’s “The Voice in the Night” and its Japanese adaptation, Matango, terrified and fascinated the editors. And - now, they’re back for more. Fungi is an anthology of dark speculative fiction (horror, fantasy, science fiction, and any other variant, such as steampunk) focused solely on the fungal. No happy mushrooms from Mario Bros. A fungus of some type must be a key element in the story, not just a throwaway element. A character can attempt to poison someone with a mushroom, mushroom cultivation may be of importance to the story, the dark patch of mould on the ceiling may begin to terrify an unhappy tenant, a group of people may consume hallucinogenic mushrooms, etc. We are looking for a variety of settings and protagonists. Mushrooms sprout around the world, after all. Oh, and if you can add a story, novel, movie, or TV episode with mushroomy content, please do it! We are keeping a spreadsheet, here. Taking Submissions: The Old Weird South
Deadline: March 1st, 2012 Payment: $50 per accepted piece and 1 contributor's copy The American South is a haunted place — full of ghost stories, native legends, persistent devils & angels, souls sold at the crossroads, and moon-eyed maidens living in the Okefenokee. The South’s best writers — Faulkner, O’Connor, McCullers — all keep this sense of the otherworldly in their fiction. In this spirit, Q & W Publishers is looking for submissions for an anthology of short fiction and non-fiction that explores the fantastic, eerie, and bizarre side of the American South. What To Submit Submit fiction and non-fiction pieces between 1,000 and 4,000 words. Pieces should be grounded in the American South (any time period, pre-historic to modern; rural or urban) and should include elements of the fantastic / supernatural that come from Southern history, tradition, or folklore. Generic vampire and werewolf stories aren’t appropriate. While violence, gore, and eroticism may be part of your submission, they should not be the primary focus — let’s keep it more PG-13 than R-rated. Submissions must be previously unpublished. Payment Payment is $50 per accepted piece. Q & W Publishers will acquire the first publication rights for the piece; all other rights remain with the author. Authors with accepted pieces will also receive one free copy of the published anthology. The anthology may appear in electronic and printed form. How to Submit Please submit your piece to [email protected]. Send a brief introduction and your piece in the body of the e-mail. Include “Anthology” and the title of the piece in the subject line of your e-mail. Timeline Submissions will be accepted until March 1st, 2012. Inclusion decisions will be made by April 1st, 2012.
