Taking Submissions: Blood & Bone: An Anthology of Body Horror by Women

Deadline: May 31st, 2021
Payment: 0.01 USD per word
Theme: Body horror stories by women

Since the earliest creation myths, womens’ bodies have been a site of conflict, venerated and feared in equal measure. We’re looking for body horror stories by women writers that explore, celebrate and dissect (perhaps literally!) femininity and the female experience.

There are no limits on content: gore and sexual content is fine. However, don’t feel your story has to be extreme. We always enjoy reading unexpected takes on our prompts, so feel free to interpret it as you wish.

We would love to include as diverse a range of voices in this anthology as possible, and as such would like to encourage LGBTQ, BIPOC, disabled and writers of other marginalised backgrounds to submit. (more…)

Taking Submissions: Women Slaying Modern Gothic Horror

Deadline: May 15th 2021
Payment: 4 cents per word
Theme: Stories inspired by Gothic moods, subtexts and themes
Note: Authors should be Women (trans, cis, femme-identifying, all are welcome)

After the raving success that was their Green Inferno project, Tenebrous Press have decided to team up with me (Alex Woodroe, hi, how are you?) for their next caper.

What’s it gonna be?

A collection of fiction exploring the grand traditions and tropes of Gothic Horror, reimagined and contemporized for this generation and beyond.

We are seeking Women—trans, cis, femme-identifying, all are welcome—to pay tribute to our Gothic Mothers (Gothmothers?) through transgressive, shocking, emotional, weird stories.

We’re not interested in rewrites of the classics; rather, stories inspired by Gothic moods, subtexts and themes. Take your breast-beating, ghost-plagued protagonists out of the Victorian manor and inject them into outer space; the plague-soaked, paranoiac world outside your window; under the sea; into a splatterpunk meta-fiction; or better yet, surprise us!

The most important thing is for your stories to stand in that delectable meeting point between the old world Gothic doom, dread, and death; and the new world fun, creativity, and excitement.

Taking Submissions: Strange Religion

Deadline: May 31st, 2021 (Original call had windows that has been modified to this date)
Payment:CAD 2c/word for originals; 50% rate for reprints
Theme: Speculative Fiction of Spirituality, Belief, and Practice
Note: Reprints welcome

As a special way to accommodate people developing stories for Strange Wars or Strange Religion, authors have the option of requesting to make late submissions. This is intended for authors who expect not to be able to finish writing and polishing their submission before the close of our submission window. If you think you will need any additional time, you can request to make a late submission here.

Strange Religion: Speculative Fiction of Spirituality, Belief, and Practice

Strange Religion thoughtfully and respectfully explores religious traditions and ideas through speculative fiction.  These are stories about the rituals, theology, and spirituality of aliens, AI, and the denizens of fantastic worlds depicted by scripture and religious folklore.

How do Muslims on other planets pray and perform the hajj? How would AI worship or read scripture? How would interreligious dialogue change if shamanic magic turned out to be real? What would the Bible be like if it were written by elves? How would the Buddha get by today? Suppose the remains of Krishna were found—what then? What if prophets didn’t only see the future but were from the future?

Taking Submissions: Pixie Forest Publishing Untitled Horror Anthology

Deadline: May 15th, 2021
Payment: $10.00
Theme: Horror stories with depth

Pixie Forest Publishing is seeking horror stories for our upcoming anthology.

Give us twists, terror, and excitement. Chill us to the bone. Give us nightmares. Don’t just scare us, create a plot and let us see your characters.

We are not looking for stories with graphic rape or paedophilia scenes. Violence and gore just for the sake of being violent and gory is not what we are wanting. If it is essential to the plot, include it. If not, leave it for a longer story.

Submissions are open until 11:59 EST on May 15th, 2021.

Stories should be between 1500 and 3000 words.

All submissions must be written in Shunn Format. Please remember to include the title, author’s name, word count, and contact information at the top of the first page. This is so the publisher can easily find you to contact you. Not including your email will guarantee no response.

Taking Submissions: The Rebel Diaries

Deadline: June 30th, 2021
Payment: Royalty Split
Theme: What happens when the villain wins?

What happens when the villain wins?

Sick of dashing debonairs? Fed up of being blinded by shining armor?

Sometimes, all a girl wants is a villain for a hero. The Rebel Diaries is looking for stories starring characters with a dubious shade of morals. We want characters who aren’t afraid of getting what they want, causing a bit of chaos, dabbling in mischief and mayhem, and slathering on the sarcasm.

We want stories that slip into the grey areas, that are bulging with villains, deviants and rebels. We’re after sassy tales littered with questionable morals and happy endings—for the villains anyway.

We are not looking for horror or gratuitous violence, but dark stories that are fun, light hearted explorations of the characters usually hidden in obscurity.

Ongoing Submissions: Shelter of Daylight

Payment: Original Stories: $25.00, Reprint Stories: $15.00, Flash Fiction: 1 cent/word, Poems: $5.00, Articles: $20.00
Theme: Original science fiction and fantasy stories that are upbeat and positive in their mood
Note: Reprints Welcome

Shelter of Daylight began with Sam’s Dot Publishing back around the turn of the decade. After some years, it was discontinued. Now, under Hiraeth Books, it has revived.

Shelter of Daylight is now published semi-annually, in January and in July, in print [and, eventually, as an eBook]. It presents original science fiction and fantasy stories that are upbeat and positive in their mood. It also presents a few original poems, again along the overall mood.

Shelter of Daylight wants original stories with plot, tension, suspense, conflict, and character development. Remember, if readers do not care what happens to your main character[s], they won’t read the story. The narrative should maintain a sense of wondering what’s going to happen next; of what’s lurking just around the corner. Showing is better than telling. Frex, instead of telling the reader that it’s cold, show your character shivering, stomping feet, or having ice form on beard or hair. The inner thoughts and emotions of your character[s] are just as important.

Stories submitted to Shelter of Daylight should be between 4K and 8K words long. Longer or shorter stories will be considered; however, anything less than 4K will be a difficult sell. Anything 1K or less will be considered flash fiction. We will consider reprint stories, provided they adhere to the guidelines; however, they are difficult sells.

Submit your stories as rtf or .doc attachments [NO .docx, please] to sdpshowcase at yahoo dot com [you must recombine this address for it to work. Sorry for the inconvenience. Blame spammers].

Please submit one story at a time, and wait for the response before submitting another. We hope to keep the response time down to two months. If you haven’t heard from us in three months, please query.
