This week’s writing prompt:
In craft this week, I’m including an article I enjoyed from Mythcreants about first person point of view. Take a minute to read this one to determine the differences between distant and close first person. Often in my own writing, I considered what the article refers to as “distant” first person to be an error – something to edit and fix because it created too much narrative distance between the reader and character. This article shines a light on how that can actually be useful, and under which circumstances it can help the reader understand a character more deeply.

This past week marked the celebration of Independence Day for the USA. For those of you who don’t reside in the US, the holiday is often celebrated by backyard barbeques, drinking, and fireworks displays. This week for your writing prompt, take one of these elements for a story, or a scene in an existing story. You can set the story at a barbeque, or you can focus on the fireworks (the amount of people who drink heavily and proceed to set off fireworks in their lawns is horror story worthy in its own right). Does something go wrong with the explosives? Do the bright lights and loud explosions awaken something? Draw unwanted attention to the people setting them off?
