December 2021: Tarot Cards for Writing Inspiration

“A sad tale’s best for winter: I have one of sprites and goblins.” ― William Shakespeare, The Winter’s Tale

Before I drew the cards for this reading, I was thinking that winter would be a good time for inspiration of the dark romance (gothic, dark fantasy, et al.) sort. So, let your mordant imaginations take you through the sinister pathways of the heart. It promises to be an intense read, as every card I drew was a major arcana card. In any case, I hope your upcoming holidays (or Winter Season festivities) are just as deliciously dark and depraved!

Main Character: The Fool. This card could represent a person with a certain “joie de vivre” that has compelled them to spend a lifetime seeking adventure and entertainment. Eschewing anything static and conformist, their impulsive nature has put them in some sticky situations, but their innocent nature has protected them from the darker side of human nature. They seem to coast along on the surface, and nothing seems to penetrate too deeply beyond this person’s lighthearted nature and positive view of the world.

Theme/Development: Illusion. But this character’s innocence can only protect them so far, and the crowd that this person has fallen in with is weaving the strands of duplicity around this young/young-at-heart adventurer. Lured on by the excitement of the unknown, the main character doesn’t see the situation for what it really is. They are too intent on having a good time with their newfound friends they have met on their travels.

Setting: Temptation. The main character is lured into the ever-darkening world that is entwining itself around them, the likes of which they have not yet experienced. It’s a world that’s as wonderfully alluring as it is dark and depraved, and the main character submits to the temptations as proffered to them by their friends. These friends are not intent on simply sharing these darker pleasures with their new initiate, they only want to corrupt the innocent nature of this too-trusting person that has stumbled into their clutches.

Conflict/Climax: The World. But what the false friends don’t realize is that they are the initiates in a ritual that’s almost as old as time itself. These tricksters are the ones that have been duped, and they are the ones that have been led down some unimaginably disturbed path beyond their wildest imaginings. Because of the energy driving their actions, a gateway has been opened between worlds. The world they know is soon to be flooded with horrors beyond their most depraved imaginings. And, leading this invasion, is none other than the main character, still full of a childlike innocence and joy. Because nothing gets beneath its surface, not even the horrifying extent of death and destruction that is now taking place all around it.

November 2021: Tarot Cards for Writing–Scratch That–Author Inspiration

Some of you may be gearing up for NaNoWriMo, others may be wrapping up your final drafts before publication, or planning out your writing goals for next year. And some may even be taking a rest-and-recharge sabbatical before the end of the year, or between seasonal cycles. I thought, then, I’d shift the tone of the reading for this month. Instead of a spread that serves as writerly inspiration, I’d thought I’d draw cards on behalf of writers themselves; writers, even us horror/dark fiction writers, could use a boost, I think.

So, I hope you enjoy November’s tarot card reading. Enjoy the fruits of your creative harvest!

Setting: King of Wands. A world in flames, torn apart by warring factions. Hate and rage fuel this martial society, and there will never be a winner, yet the fighting seems like it will continue until there is nothing left but a destroyed, blood-soaked landscape.

Character: The Chariot. Ruling over this world is the penultimate Queen of War. She will not yield until her cause is won. But her real end goal is unknown to the cadre of warriors she leads into battle. She has dual roles to play in the future of the world. She sees the infinite threads of fate and the universe with her powerful eyes, and knows that this planet has been distorted by a time fault. She is both an actor and a director in the flow of space and time, and, while her warriors are united to a their cause, she is using them as a sacrifice to create the world anew–to bring it back into the harmony of the universe over which she rules.

Theme/Development: Four of Cups. Although martial in character and on the battlefield, even the Queen of War has to yield to the balance and order of the universe. To ignore that is to also bring about her own demise. Which, being the immortal essence of the universe, is not really a demise, but a purgatory. And even though centuries have passed while the opposing sides continue their warfare, even she is tiring of the constant battle. The flames of hate and rage are now threatening to extend out into the universe, as the planet’s inhabitants have built better technology. If they manage to make it off the planet, the balance of all time and space will be disrupted. She has to stop it.

Conflict/Climax: Four of Coins. However, the queen has gotten too accustomed to life on this planet. She’s finding it hard to give up the comforts of living a life within a concrete physical form–the entertainment, food, warmth, and security her castle provides. Not to mention she’s fearing the more quiet, dull life that awaits her once the universe regains its necessary balance. But the world she inhabits in physical form has begun to decay with the deleterious effect of the technology the planet’s inhabitants continue to invent. Soon, she won’t have a world under her feet, and the decay will spread throughout the universe. She has to make a choice; to create a world within which all life can live, or she can die with her soldiers.

September 2021: Tarot Cards for Writing Inspiration

There’s a certain appeal to the magic and wonder of carnivals and circuses, isn’t there? Unless it’s the nocturnal circus whose lights blaze to life just as you’re pumping gas at a remote rural gas station, that is. Or the haunting tones of carnival coming from the empty field out behind the dingy roadside motel you just checked into for the night. So, for September’s reading, let your imagination soar with the aerial performers of the Big Top as you create tales of gothic gloom and doom.

Setting: Six of Pentacles (Reversed). The main character finds themselves evicted due to the lingering financial impact of the pandemic. With very little money, and nowhere else to go, the character has to pack what they can in a backpack and go on the road looking for work. With no fixed address, work is hard to come by, but the character manages to pick up odd jobs here and there. When they come across a motel in the middle of rural farmland, the character decides to spend the money for a room and the opportunity to take a hot shower.

August 2021: Tarot Cards for Writing Inspiration

According to the Old Farmer’s Almanac, the Dog Days (July 3 to August 1) were once thought to wreck havoc on “dogs and men alike”. (Source of quoted material: https://www.almanac.com/content/what-are-dog-days-summer) But it seems like people, in general, are wreaking plenty of havoc without the aiding and abetting presence of that rascally star Sirius. And while I may not believe that Sirius influences the weather here on earth, I know I have been feeling swamped with a bad case of the doldrums. So, let’s slog through this month’s tarot card reading for writing inspiration, and see if we can’t break free, eh?

Setting: Ace of Pentacles. An environment that is the epitome of luxury, wealth, and complete fulfillment. Hunger, fear, discomfort, pain—these things do not exist in the world the main character moves through. Everything is practically perfect for this pampered character—until the day comes when it’s not.

Character(s): Queen of Rods (Reversed). A person who has undergone a series of traumatic events, and has emerged scarred. Among the trauma she experienced was the loss of her beloved canine companion. Where she was once gracious and poised as her former elegant lifestyle dictated, she is now bitter and distrustful. She cuts all ties with her elite social circles and withdraws to a remote country cabin. Her cabin is surrounded by lush nature, and, during one of her long walks, she uncovers a source of wilding, dark energy. She uses this source to transform herself and become a vengeful and powerful entity.

Theme/Development: The Tower. She embarks on a vengeful quest to not only punish those who harmed her and her beloved dog, but humanity in general. She leaves behind a swath of death, destruction, and ruin behind her, but spares the animals, both wild and domesticated.

Conflict/Climax: Six of Swords. The main character, and the animals she liberated, are left wandering a world in ruins. She is at a loss at what to do next. She has never lived in a world that demanded physical labour from her. But as she stares out over the razed buildings, a bright star appears in the sky. It’s so bright, it illuminates the destruction she has left in her wake. And she knows what she has to do. She rolls up her sleeves and gets to work, cleaning up the mess she, and humanity in general, has left behind.

July 2021: Tarot Cards for Writing Inspiration

Welcome to Climate Change Summers! At least July’s going to cool off so that people here in the United States can set off fireworks and thereby terrify all kinds of wildlife and traumatize people’s pets. Ha! (Seriously, though, stay safe, and please don’t set the world on fire any more than it already is!) And, speaking of terror and trauma, here’s hoping this month’s tarot card reading is fiendishly inspiring to all you writers out there!

Character(s): Page of Wands (Reversed). A young person who’s a thief, pickpocket, or part of some criminal enterprise. Smart and clever, and, of course, manipulative. This character’s motivations can be used to develop the plot, whether as an antihero to your main character, or a flawed character that finds themselves drawn into a situation where they risk getting in over their heads, or tempted by a downward spiral path that may prove difficult to extricate themselves from, until the stakes demand a price they aren’t willing, or able, to pay.

Theme/Development: Ten of Swords. A fatal mistake. Severe misjudgment. Heart-wrenching loss. A terrible price has been paid. Capture, physical/emotional injury, torture, confinement, and the threat of death/execution occurs because of the character(s)’s actions. Cunning has only taken the character so far, and now the character may find themselves on the run.

Setting: Six of Swords. Journey of exile or escape to a remote island, or other faraway location, possibly with an injured loved one, or to recuperate from their own injuries. Area could be populated by a previously unknown peoples, or the character could find themselves on their own.

Conflict/Climax: Queen of Wands (Reversed). The character encounters an opportunity to make a new life; whether it’s in the location (and with the people) they took refuge in, or an opportunity to start over in a new location with the aid of a companion. Instead they are tempted by the opportunity to seek revenge for their loss, or for the trauma they endured at the hands of their persecutors. There might also be a conflict as money needed to start over in new lands, there is debt incurred with a doctor, healer, or other medical individual, or new family/community ties the character wants to support. And, as a result, the character risks being drawn back into the same cycle they had escaped.

June 2021: Tarot Cards for Writing Inspiration

June, already? Wasn’t it just…January? Anyway, if you’re missing the gloom and drear of winter, here’s this month’s “writer inspiration” tarot reading. While you’re hibernating in your dank cave, and instead of cursing the tweepy, tweety birds fluttering outside your window, you can work on your next macabre masterpiece!

Character(s): Three of Rods. Character #1 has come up with a new business idea—one with great start-up potential—but they just need some financial backing. A professional partnership with an influential partner (Character #2) is formed, and fiscal support is provided. The backing/investment partner may seem to have have more business acumen and knowledge that they are willing to share with Character #2. The business “start-up” is launched after a period of negotiation and begins to show early signs of success.

Setting: Six of Cups. The two partners are soon able to reap the rewards of the venture. Rapid business growth creates an environment of ultimate attainment and security. Posh hotels, luxury travel trips, fine dining, new cars, homes, and the like, are at characters’ disposal. The two characters may develop a romantic connection as well as a professional one.

Theme/Development: The Moon. The rapid success of the business may be a little too perfect. Is there more to the success of the business than just a great start-up idea Character #1 had? The world that Character #1 now moves in seems like a dream from their former life; poverty, struggle, and, above all, loneliness. All that feels like it’s part of a distant, and painful, past the creator would rather forget. Every need of theirs is met, by Character #2. And they are never lonely. In fact, Character #1 is never alone. The two partners are always together. Their new lives together are like a dream come true, as improbable as it seems. And their luck seems to be holding, as the relationship grows between the two characters.

Conflict/Climax: Six of Pentacles (Reversed)/King of Rods (Reversed). Character #1 wakes up one morning to find Character #2 gone from their bed. There’s an eviction notice posted outside the condo. The company’s offices are empty and shuttered. The bank accounts have been cleaned out. Alone, penniless, abandoned, Character #1 takes shelter in a nearby bar until they can figure out what to do. On the TV screen above the bar, Character #1 sees Character #2, getting onto a plane. The news reporter refers to Character #2 by a different name, but, even though the hair and clothes are different, Character #1 recognizes them. And recognizes the logo on the place just before the screen flips back to the news room. Character #1 has an idea of where Character #2 is going. And that they would find a way to follow: to confront Character #2, to get revenge, to make sure they won’t be left alone, ever again.

May 2021: Tarot Cards for Writing Inspiration

Ah, May. Springtime, chirping birds, blooming flowers, bright sunshine, and sweet, sweet love! Sounds dreadful, doesn’t it? If you’re still pining over the delightfully dismal days of winter, why not add a pinch of heartbreak and love-gone-wrong to your supernaturally spooky tales?

Character(s): The Lovers. A whirlwind passion between two lovers. Underneath the transitory nature of their relationship lies a deeper connection between the two, and one that is not so easily put aside. It could be a mysterious secret from their past, or a self that they keep hidden from the rest of the world, that ties the two of them together. Whatever source that keeps bringing these two characters together, it seems to be full of portents, omens, and the will of some unknown fate(s), which they will have to discover, and face, together.

Setting: Eight of Rods. Opening setting: a vacation locale of some sorts. Could be ski resort, a location outside their home country, a chateau, a vineyard resort, a thriving urban city with a dynamic nightlife. Think night and shadows and glamour and intrigue over a bright and sunny tropical vacation. Professional relocation to another country for one, or both, resulting in the passionate encounter between the two lovers. And/or a chance re-acquaintance after their romantic interlude, of which fate plays a part, i.e. drawing them into close geographical contact again by means that seem like pure chance, but which might be orchestrated by a higher power.

Theme/Development: The High Priestess. Symbolic or actual force that brings these two together to fulfill their fate, and to achieve the outcome that this particular entity, deity, or elemental wants to have occur. Leader not of this world, with power not limited to the everyday world of humans. The deity is using these two individuals to further their own goals and visions for the world and its future evolutions/incarnations.

Conflict/Climax: The Sun. Under the harsh light of the sun, their budding relationship suffers. They may even find themselves in a situation where they are in competition with each other in regards to career or in a professional setting. Romance is easy in a moonlit setting, but is it more than that behind their struggle to resist their continued attraction for one another? Secrets are revealed about who they really are—magical talents, supernatural abilities, otherworldly/other-dimension lace of origin—and they realize they have a shared connection above and beyond their whirlwind passion. They might even have a (adventurous) fate they need to fulfill by virtue of that connection. Or their relationship may have to move past a romantic one into one that is more strategic and will ensure that they are able to fulfill the roles fate has determined for the both of them. They may try to resist the roles that fate has assigned to them, even though their transformation, and that of their world, is inevitable.
